Opis:
Source/filter models have frequently been used to model sound production of the vocal apparatus and musical instruments. Beginning in 1968, in an effort to measure the transfer function (i.e., transmission response or filter characteristic) of a trombone while being played by expert musicians, sound pressure signals from the mouthpiece and the trombone bell output were recorded in an anechoic room and then subjected to harmonic spectrum analysis. Output/input ratios of the signals’ harmonic amplitudes plotted vs. harmonic frequency then became points on the trombone’s transfer function. The first such recordings were made on analog 1/4 inch stereo magnetic tape. In 2000 digital recordings of trombone mouthpiece and anechoic output signals were made that provide a more accurate measurement of the trombone filter characteristic. Results show that the filter is a high-pass type with a cutoff frequency around 1000 Hz. Whereas the characteristic below cutoff is quite stable, above cutoff it is extremely variable, depending on level. In addition, measurements made using a swept-sine-wave system in 1972 verified the high-pass behavior, but they also showed a series of resonances whose minima correspond to the harmonic frequencies which occur under performance conditions. For frequencies below cutoff the two types of measurements corresponded well, but above cutoff there was a considerable difference. The general effect is that output harmonics above cutoff are greater than would be expected from linear filter theory, and this effect becomes stronger as input pressure increases. In the 1990s and early 2000s this nonlinear effect was verified by theory and measurements which showed that nonlinear propagation takes place in the trombone, causing a wave steepening effect at high amplitudes, thus increasing the relative strengths of the upper harmonics.

Opis:
The distribution of perturbations of pressure and velocity in a rectangular resonator is considered. A resonator contains a gas where thermodynamic processes take place, such as exothermic chemical reaction or excitation of vibrational degrees of a molecule’s freedom. These processes make the gas acoustically active under some conditions. We conclude that the incident and reflected compounds of a sound beam do not interact in the leading order in the case of the periodic sound with zero mean pressure including waveforms with discontinuities. The acoustic field before and after forming of discontinuities is described. The acoustic heating or cooling in a resonator is discussed.

Opis:
In this study, we investigate the sensing applications in the presence of the nonlinear effects by proposing an all-optical sensor and considering nonlinear effects on modal propagation and output intensity based on an ultra-compact nonlinear multimode interference coupler. The sensor can be tuned to have the highest sensitivity in the wavelength and refractive index ranges and can detect water-soluble chemicals, air-pollutions, earthquake wave, blood parameters, and heart operation. The results indicate high output sensitivity to input wavelength whereas the nonlinear effects appear in the medium. This sensitivity led us to propose a wave sensor of both transverse and longitudinal waves, such as acoustic and light waves, when an external wave interacts with an input waveguide. For instance, this sensor can be implemented using a long input that is inserted in the land, and any wave could then be detected from the Earth. The visible changes in intensity at the output facet in various refractive indices of the surrounding layer show the high sensitivity to the refractive index of the surrounding layer, which is the foundation of introducing a sensor. Generally, the results show the high efficiency of nonlinear effects in all-optical sensing performances.

The paper presents the results of research focused on the wave propagation in the CTO S.A. deepwater towing tank. In the scope of paper, the wavemaker transfer function was determined for regular waves, based on the Biésel Transfer Function and further for irregular waves, based on Hasselman model of nonlinear energy transfer. The phenomena: wave damping, wave breakdown and wave reflection, were measured, analyzed and mathematically modeled. Developed mathematical models allow to calculate the impact of mentioned phenomena on the wave propagation and furthermore to calculate the wave characteristics along the whole measurement area in the CTO S.A. deepwater towing tank, based on wavemaker flap motion control.

Opis:
The nonlinear dynamics of perturbations, quickly varying in space, with comparatively large characteristic wavenumbers k: k > 1/H, is considered. H is the scale of density and pressure reduction in unperturbed gas, as the coordinate increases (H is the so-called height of the uniform equilibrium gas). Coupling nonlinear equations which govern the sound and the entropy mode in a weakly nonlinear flow are derived. They describe the dynamics of the gas in the leading order, with an accuracy up to the terms k(H)-1. In the field of the dominative sound mode, other induced modes contain parts which propagate approximately with their own linear speeds and the speed of the dominative mode. The scheme of successive approximations of nonlinear links between perturbations in the progressive mode is established. The numerical calculations for some kinds of impulses confirm the theory.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the research focused on linear and nonlinear wave generation and propagation in a deepwater towing tank equipped with a single flap-type wavemaker of variable draft. The problem of wave generation and propagation has been theoretically formulated and solved by applying an analytical method; linear and nonlinear solutions were obtained. The linear solution has been verified experimentally. The laboratory experiments confirmed that a linear model can be applied to predict the generation and propagation of water waves of low steepness. However, according to the analysis, the discrepancies between wave profiles predicted by applying the linear and nonlinear models rapidly increases with increasing wave steepness. Additionally, the secondary phenomena which occur in the towing tank, including: disintegration of wave profile, wave reflections from the beach and wave damping, were analyzed. Knowledge on the nonlinear processes and phenomena is essential for modeling the environmental conditions during tests carried out to secure the safety of the naval and offshore constructions. The theoretical formulation was derived and the solution was obtained by the Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences IBW PAN while the experimental research was carried out in Ship Hydromechanics Division of the Ship Design and Research Centre CTO S.A.

Opis:
In this paper, we present the general governing equations of electrodynamics and continuum mechanics that need to be considered while mathematically modelling the behaviour of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs). We consider the existence of finite deformations for soft materials and the possibility of electric currents, temperature gradients, and internal heat generation due to dissipation. Starting with Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism and balance laws of nonlinear elasticity, we present the governing equations and boundary conditions in incremental form in order to solve wave propagation problems of boundary value type.
W artykule przedstawiono ogólne równania elektrodynamiki i mechaniki kontinuum, które uwzględnia się przy modelowaniu matematycznym właściwości przetworników elektromagnetyczno-akustycznych (EMAT). Rozpatrzono istnienie skończonych deformacji w materiałach miękkich oraz możliwość powstawania prądów elektrycznych, gradientów temperatury i wewnętrznego wydzielania ciepła w wyniku rozpraszania energii. Punktem wyjścia były równania Maxwella i prawa równowagi nieliniowej teorii sprężystości. Na tej podstawie wyprowadzono równania i warunki brzegowe w formie przyrostowej, co umożliwiło rozwiązanie problemu propagacji fali o typie odpowiadającym wartościom granicznym.

Opis:
The determination of the accuracy of functions of measured or adjusted values may be a problem in geodetic computations. The general law of covariance propagation or in case of the uncorrelated observations the propagation of variance (or the Gaussian formula) are commonly used for that purpose. That approach is theoretically justified for the linear functions. In case of the non-linear functions, the first-order Taylor series expansion is usually used but that solution is affected by the expansion error. The aim of the study is to determine the applicability of the general variance propagation law in case of the non-linear functions used in basic geodetic computations. The paper presents errors which are a result of negligence of the higher-order expressions and it determines the range of such simplification. The basis of that analysis is the comparison of the results obtained by the law of propagation of variance and the probabilistic approach, namely Monte Carlo simulations. Both methods are used to determine the accuracy of the following geodetic computations: the Cartesian coordinates of unknown point in the three-point resection problem, azimuths and distances of the Cartesian coordinates, height differences in the trigonometric and the geometric levelling. These simulations and the analysis of the results confirm the possibility of applying the general law of variance propagation in basic geodetic computations even if the functions are non-linear. The only condition is the accuracy of observations, which cannot be too low. Generally, this is not a problem with using present geodetic instruments.

Propagation of weakly nonlinear plane electromagnetic waves in nonlinear isotropic dielectrics was analyzed. Transport evolution equations for waves’ amplitudes with quadratic nonlinearity were derived using the method of weakly nonlinear asymptotics. It was shown that in order to obtain quadratically nonlinear transport equations for waves’ amplitudes it is necessary to have a nonzero transverse component of the electric field in the initial state. The (so called self-interaction) coefficients which appear in these equations were calculated explicitly. The result was illustrated by the example of Kerr medium.
