Opis:
The paper presents a simple method for estimating nonlinear frequency distortions of linear frequency modulated (LFM) signals used in FMCW radars. This method, derived from the polynomial model of the nonlinear FM signal phase, is based on finding the maximum of two-dimensional chirp-like transform of the IF video signal. The IF signal is obtained by mixing transmitted FM signal with its delayed copy. Using suggested transform we show that the presented method is able to detect and classify signal distortions.

Opis:
In this study, nonlinear fundamental natural frequencies of Functionally Graded (FG) multilayer Graphene Platelet-reinforced Polymer Composite (GPL-RPC) curved cylindrical panels are studied. It is considered that the Graphene Platelet (GPL) nanofillers are distributed in the matrix either uniformly or nonuniformly along the thickness direction. Four GPL distribution patterns namely, UD, FG-O, FG-X, and FG-A are considered. The effective material properties of GPL-RPC layers are obtained via the modified Halpin–Tsai micromechanics model and the rule of the mixture. A nonlinear structural model is utilized based on the virtual work principle. Green’s nonlinear kinematic strain relations are used to account for the geometric nonlinearities and the First-order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT) is adopted to generalize the formulation for the case of moderately thick cylindrical panels including transverse shear deformations. The Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method of solution is employed to solve the nonlinear governing equations of motion. The present study aims to study the effect of GPL weight fraction for the proposed distribution patterns on the nonlinear fundamental frequency of functionally graded GPL-RPC cylindrical panels with different boundary conditions.

It has been shown that the description of mildly nonlinear circuits with the use of an operator o introduced by Meyer and Stephens in their paper published more than forty years ago was flawed. The problem now with their incorrect and imprecise definition is that it is still replicated in one or another form, as, for example, in publications of Palumbo and Pennisi on harmonic distortion calculation in integrated CMOS amplifiers or an article of Shrimali and Chatterjee on nonlinear distortion analysis of a three-terminal MOS-based parametric amplifier. Here, we discuss the versions of o operator presented in the works mentioned above and show points, where mistakes were committed. Also, we derive the correct forms of nonlinear circuit descriptions that should be used.

Opis:
For the first time, operator o appeared in the literature on weakly nonlinear circuits in a Narayanan’s paper on modelling transistor nonlinear distortion with the use of Volterra series. Its definition was restricted only to the linear part of a nonlinear circuit description. Obviously, as we show here, Narayanan’s operator o had meaning of a linear convolution integral. The extended version of this operator, which was applied to the whole nonlinear circuit representation by the Volterra series, was introduced by Meyer and Stephens in their paper on modelling nonlinear distortion in variable-capacitance diodes. We show here that its definition as well as another definition communicated to the author of this paper are faulty. We draw here attention to these facts because the faults made by Meyer and Stephens were afterwards replicated in publications of Palumbo and his coworkers on harmonic distortion calculation in integrated CMOS amplifiers, and recently in a paper about distortion analysis of parametric amplifier by H. Shrimali and S. Chatterjee. These faults are also present in some class notes for students, which are available on WWW-pages.

Opis:
In this paper, we perform the frequency-expansion formula for the nonlinear cubic damping van der Pol’s equation, and the nonlinear frequency is derived. Stability conditions are performed, for the first time ever, by the nonlinear frequency technology and for the nonlinear oscillator. In terms of the van der Pol’s coefficients the stability conditions have been performed. Further, the stability conditions are performed in the case of the complex damping coefficients. Moreover, the study has been extended to include the influence of a forcing van der Pol’ oscillator. Stability conditions have been derived at each resonance case. Redoing the perturbation theory for the van der Pol oscillator illustrates more of a resonance formulation such as sub-harmonic resonance and super-harmonic resonance. More approximate nonlinear dispersion relations of quartic and quintic forms in the squaring of the extended frequency are derived, respectively.

A wideband optical frequency comb (OFC) generator using a fiber re-circulating loop (FRL) including a phase modulator and optical amplifier, cascaded with a spectrum expander containing a high-power erbium-doped fiber amplifier and highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, in which the FRL is used as a source to generate seed comb lines, and then generated seed comb lines are extended to a wideband optical frequency comb using cascaded four-wave mixing in the HNLF. Only using one stage spectrum expander, a stable 20-GHz optical comb with 201 comb lines within 30-dB power deviation, spanning 40-nm bandwidth, is achieved. The results show that the HNLF has unique ability to broaden output spectrum from the FRL. In addition, an optical frequency comb is dramatically broadened, which may be predicted by optimizing gain and dispersion of the FRL or configuration of the spectrum expander, or both.

In this study the fixed-fixed column subjected to axial Euler’s load has been investigated. The load is placed between the fixed ends of the structure and its location can be changed along column’s length. The boundary problem of free vibrations of the mentioned system has been formulated on the basis of Bernoulli – Euler theory and taking into account non-linear axial deformation relationship. Due to non-linear expressions the solution of the problem was done with small parameter method. In the paper the change of the first vibration frequency in relation to location and magnitude of the loading force was obtained. The relationship between natural vibration frequency and the amplitude is also discussed.

higher order Frequency Response Functions
Opis:
Using the example of a cracked cantilever beam, this paper illustrates a means of identifying damage in structures using the so-called higher order Frequency Response Function (FRFs) which are based on the Volterra series. It is well known that, when a beam subject to a dynamic excitation vibrates, a transverse “breathing”crack present in the beam can change the state (from open to closed and vice-versa), causing nonlinear dynamic behaviour. A simple model of a cracked cantilever beam vibrating in its first mode is proposed. Across the frequency range which encompasses the first mode of vibration, it is possible to model the response characteristics of a cracked beam using a relatively simple asymmetric bilinear oscillator. As described in this article, it is possible to use these higher order FRFs to characterise the nonlinear behaviour of the cantilever beam and investigate the qualitative relation with the parameters of the fault such as entity and location. In this study, the case of single harmonic excitation has been considered initially. Then, a new characteristic function, again based on the higher order FRFs, is proposed for detecting the crack by exploiting the fact that due to the second-order nonlinear behaviour, two harmonic inputs combine to excite the sum of their frequencies. Comparisons are made between results derived using the simple model described and those obtained from a FE model simulating some experimental tests on the beam.

Opis:
To realize a structure which can be conveniently tuned to multiple and wideband frequency ranges, a geometrical-stiffening membrane acoustic metamaterial (MAM) with individually tunable multiple frequencies is presented. The MAM is realized by a stacked arrangement of two membrane-magnet elements, each of which has a membrane with a small piece of steel attached in the centre. It can be tuned individually by adjusting the position of its compact magnet. The normal incidence sound transmission loss of the MAM is investigated in detail by measurements in an impedance tube. The test sample results demonstrate that this structure can easily achieve a transmission loss with two peaks which can be shifted individually in a wide low-frequency range. A theoretical consideration is analysed, the analysis shows that the magnetic effect related to this distance leads to a nonlinear attractive force and, consequently, nonlinear geometrical stiffening in each membrane-magnet element, which allows the peaks to be shifted. A reasonable design can make the structure have a good application prospect for low-frequency noise insulation where there is a need to adjust the transmission loss according to the spectrum of the noise source.

The paper shortly presents shock absorber design evolution and resulting achieved characteristics. The way in which suspension performance is evaluated is described giving information about models used for suspension parameter tuning during simulation testing of suspension transmissibility (FRF - Frequency Response Function) for most important suspension assessment criteria. More detailed information about models of shock absorber (damper) nonlinearities of characteristics allows for description of methods of linear and nonlinear suspension models FRF estimation. Testing linear suspension model is possible with the use of analytical transfer function formulas which were used to verify methods for estimation FRF using estimated power spectral density functions of excitation and response signals. Designing appropriate input signal allowing to get useful response signals was necessary to for the success of this research. Proposed FRF estimation method was used for linear estimation of nonlinear suspension for a given range of working condition. It was demonstrated that there is no single value of a damping coefficient which would make the linear model responses similar to the responses of the nonlinear one. Then the bilinear model was proposed, giving good damper static nonlinear characteristic.

A new formulation of vibrations of the axially loaded Euler-Bernoulli beam with quintic nonlinearity is investigated in the present study. The beam nonlinear natural frequency as a function of the initial amplitude is obtained. In this direction, modern powerful analytical methods namely He’s Max-Min Approach (MMA) and Amplitude-Frequency Formulation (AFF) are employed to approximate the frequency-amplitude relationship of the beam vibrations. Afterwards, it is clearly shown that the first term in the series expansions is sufficient to produce a highly accurate approximation of the nonlinear system. Finally, preciseness of the present analytical procedures is evaluated in contrast with numerical calculation methods.

This paper presents typical results for the non-linear low frequency transients following the energization of power transformers. The three operating conditions of no-load, full-load and internal faults are considered. A direct analytical procedure is applied for solving the corresponding set of differential equations describing the transformers equivalent circuit. The core representation is based on the use of curve fitting applied to their magnetization curves. The results include plots versus time for the supply current, the core flux, the magnetizing current as well as the internal induced voltage. Moreover, graphs for the hysteresis loops relating the instantaneous values of both the excitation current and the core flux are given. An approach is also presented for the numerical determination of the amplitudes of the different harmonics existing in any of these signals utilizing the corresponding equidistant samples. As examples, the DC offset as well as harmonics up to the fourth order are considered. It is shown that several useful features can be extracted from the results in both the time and harmonic domains that can assist in differentiating between overcurrents resulting from short-circuits or inrush phenomena.

The paper presents the principle of operation and experimental model of an eddy current sensor. The investigated sensor will work in systems of 2D visualization of metal objects. The aim of measurement experiments was to reach operation frequencies at which the sensor sensitivity is maximum, and to determine such conditions of work which allow getting the maximal detection zone of the sensor dependent on its sensitivity. In the preliminary research a circuit model of the sensor was formulated. It was pointed out that such a model has to be nonlinear in order to obtain consistence with verification measurements. The investigation results show that there are four resonances on the frequency characteristics. These points of characteristics are also points of the maximum sensor sensitivity. The maximum value of the amplitude-frequency characteristic resonance was at about 147 kHz which was the lowest resonance frequency and was chosen as a work frequency for scanning process. The final investigations deal with observation of the influence of the type of object on the sensor sensitivity. They show that the sensor sensitivity is higher under influence of nonferromagnetic materials.

This paper proposes and demonstrates a novel scheme of a two-channel-output ultra-wideband monocycle pulse generator consisting of a 100 m dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber and two optical bandpass filters. Based on the cross-phase modulation effect in a dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, two polarity-reversed ultra-wideband monocycle pulses simultaneously output from two different channels are successfully achieved by appropriately locating the probe wavelength at the left linear slope and the right linear slope of the two optical bandpass filters transmission spectra, respectively. The full width at half-maximum and a fractional bandwidth of 24 ps and 260% for a positive pulse, 24 ps and 251% for a negative pulse are obtained. Moreover, the influences of input signal powers, the polarization misalignment between the data light and the continuous wave probe light, and probe wavelength variation on the double output ultra-wideband signals quality are also investigated. The results show that the system has some tolerance to both the input signal power fluctuation and the slight polarization mismatch and even can efficiently operate with a widely tunable wavelength range. This makes it very attractive for engineering applications in future multiuser ultra-wideband-over-fiber communication systems.

Mathematical modeling with the original approach is used to study the dynamics of low-frequency electro-vibration machines while taking the technological load into account. Based on the mathematical analysis of differential equations describing the oscillatory motion of electromagnetic vibration exciters, the existing mathematical model has been corrected to describe the action of a semiconductor diode in the power circuits of single-cycle vibrators. Modeling nonlinear dynamic systems reveals the difficulties of obtaining the amplitude frequency characteristics of the associated discrete change in the frequency of the driving force, as well as ways to overcome them.
