Opis:
As an object of course control, the ship is characterised by a nonlinear function describing static manoeuvring characteristics that reflect the steady-state relation between the rudder deflection and the rate of turn of the hull. One of the methods which can be used for designing a nonlinear ship course controller is the backstepping method. It is used here for designing two configurations of nonlinear controllers, which are then applied to ship course control. The parameters of the obtained nonlinear control structures are tuned to optimise the operation of the control system. The optimisation is performed using genetic algorithms. The quality of operation of the designed control algorithms is checked in simulation tests performed on the mathematical model of a tanker. In order to obtain reference results to be used for comparison with those recorded for nonlinear controllers designed using the backstepping method, a control system with the PD controller is examined as well.

Opis:
In a series of the recent papers of the author, it was shown that the solutions and Lagrange multipliers of state-constrained optimal control problems are locally Lipschitz continuous and directionally differentiable functions of the parameter, under usual constraint qualifications and weakened second order conditions. In this paper, it is shown that those conditions are not only sufficient, but also necessary. Thus, they consitute a characterization of Lipschitz stability and sensitivity properties for state-constrained optimal control problems.

Opis:
This paper describes a computationally efficient (sub-optimal) nonlinear predictive control algorithm. The algorithm uses a modified dual-mode approach which guarantees closed-loop stability. In order to reduce the computational burden, instead of online nonlinear optimisation used in the classical dual-mode control scheme, a nonlinear model of the plant is linearised on-line and a quadratic programming problem is solved. Calculation of the terminal set and implementation steps of the algorithm are detailed, especially for input-output models, which are widely used in practice.

Opis:
This paper presents an algorithm for nonlinear adaptive control of the viral load in HIV-1 infection. The infection model considered is a reduced complexity nonlinear state-space model with two state variables, that represent the plasma concentration of uninfected and infected CD4+ T-cells of the human immune system. The viral load is assumed to be proportional to the concentration of infected cells. First, a change of variables that exactly linearizes the system is obtained. For the resulting linear system the manipulated variable is obtained by state feedback. To compensate for the uncertainty in the infection parameter of the model an estimator based on a Control Lyapunov Function is designed.

Opis:
The quadratic loss penalty is a well known technique for optimization and control problems to treat constraints. In the present paper they are applied to handle control bounds in a boundary control problems with semilinear elliptic state equations. Unlike in the case of finite dimensional optimization for infinite dimensional problems the order of convergence could only be roughly estimated, but numerical experiments revealed a clearly better convergence behavior with constants independent of the dimension of the used discretization. The main result in the present paper is the proof of sharp convergence bounds for both, the finite und infinite dimensional problem with a mesh-independence in case of the discretization. Further, to achieve an efficient realization of penalty methods the principle of control reduction is applied, i.e. the control variable is represented by the adjoint state variable by means of some nonlinear function. The resulting optimality system this way depends only on the state and adjoint state. This system is discretized by conforming linear finite elements. Numerical experiments show exactly the theoretically predicted behavior of the studied penalty technique.

The problem considered is that of approximate minimisation of the Bolza problem of optimal control. Starting from Bellman's method of dynamic programming, we define the ε-value function to be an approximation to the value function being a solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The paper shows an approach that can be used to construct an algorithm for calculating the values of an ε-value function at given points, thus approximating the respective values of the value function.

Our aim is to adapt Fletcher's filter approach to solve optimal control problems for systems described by nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with state constraints. To this end, we propose a number of modifications of the filter approach, which are well suited for our purposes. Then, we discuss possible ways of cooperation between the filter method and a PDE solver, and one of them is selected and tested.

Opis:
In the paper a new look at adaptation in active noise control (ANC) systems is presented. The adaptation is interpreted as a nonlinear feedback. This nonlinearity could be manifested in behaviour of ANC systems with occurence of complex periodic and chaoti time-domain responses. Results of real world experiments with adaptive ANC systems used to create a local zone of quiet in a laboratory enclosure showing apparently this behaviour are included.
Zamieszczono przykłady takich odpowiedzi w wyniku doświadczeń laboratoryjnych, w których układy ATH wykorzystywano do tworzenia lokalnych przestrzennych stref ciszy w pomieszczeniu zamkniętym.

Opis:
Designing variable structure control with sliding mode (VSC-SM) control schemes needs a switching function or a sliding surface which guarantees the global stability of the closed-loop system. Despite the fact that a wide range of design approaches has been proposed for solving this mathematical problem, the number of proposed methodologies for nonlinear systems is not very extensive, especially for discrete time nonlinear MIMO systems, and most of them require some coordinate system transformation. Therefore, it is not an easy task to find a design scheme that can be applied to discrete time nonlinear MIMO systems. The proposed methodology introduces a mathematical tool: a switching surface equation for a class of MIMO nonlinear systems through an explicit equation without any coordinate transformation. This equation makes use of an implicit linearizing process via the Taylor expansion that allows the use of linear procedures for the design of switching surfaces and the forward Euler method to obtain a discrete time dynamics representation. An illustrative example is included to show the advantages of the proposed design methodology.

Opis:
Model predictive control (MPC) algorithms are widely used in practical applications. They are usually formulated as optimization problems. If a model used for prediction is linear (or linearized on-line), then the optimization problem is a standard, i.e., quadratic, one. Otherwise, it is a nonlinear, in general, nonconvex optimization problem. In the latter case, numerical problems may occur during solving this problem, and the time needed to calculate control signals cannot be determined. Therefore, approaches based on linear or linearized models are preferred in practical applications. A novel, fuzzy, numerically efficient MPC algorithm is proposed in the paper. It can offer better performance than the algorithms based on linear models, and very close to that of the algorithms based on nonlinear optimization. Its main advantage is the short time needed to calculate the control value at each sampling instant compared with optimization-based numerical algorithms; it is a combination of analytical and numerical versions of MPC algorithms. The efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated using control systems of two nonlinear control plants: the first one is a chemical CSTR reactor with a van de Vusse reaction, and the second one is a pH reactor.
