This paper discuses an eco-apocalyptic non-fiction, which can be described as dark biology (referring to dark fantasy, dark science-fiction or noir crime fiction). The analysis is focused on Richard Preston’s, David Quamenn’s, Karl Taro Freenfeld’s and Nathan Wolfe’s medical/scientific nonfiction and heroic-exploratory narratives. The authors of dark narratives about viruses use the motives typical of crime, thriller, horror or sensation fiction. This analysis is set in a context of „dark ecology” — Timothy Morton’s eco-critical project.

Opis:
The intertextuality is one of a few terms gaining dominion over a whole contemporary culture. However, as long as literary reportage is considered the traditional mimetic relation takes the first and the last place alike. The main thesis of herein paper is that after the postmodern turn the naive referential analysis of creative non-fiction cannot be the most accurate way of interpreting anymore. Intertextuality appears to be able to refresh some reading methods and make them as adequate as possible in the postmodern reality. Moreover, it is not only about a kind of scholarly designed methodology, but also about a groundbreaking subgenre: an intertextual reportage which bases on the intentionally established relations between some texts. One of the most characteristic representatives of this genre variant is Mariusz Szczygieł whose pathway leads from an ordinary reportage form early 90’s to contemporary intertextual reportages about Czech Republic. Szczygieł is aware of fact that human perception is deeply influenced by some cultural schemes determined mostly by novels, newspapers, electronic media and art. That’s why the intertextual relations in his pieces seems to be even more important than the process of referring to the actual reality. The herein paper follows Szczygieł’s way from modern to postmodern configurations of the literary reportage, reconstructs his vision of the Bohemia with its art and literature and analyses one of his most specific works in terms of intertextuality.

Opis:
Wojciech Jagielski has been presented in the article as a successor to Ryszard Kapuściński’s accomplishments in the genre of literary nonfiction. Both authors continue the tradition of nonfiction writing which started after the First World War in Poland and which displayed their fascination with human history. They both share the technique of using parallels and analogies, which for Jagielski serves the purpose of presenting culturally and historically remote spaces. Another key characteristic of Jagielski’s oeuvre, namely creating complex psychological portraits of the people in power, also tends to utilize the aforementioned technique. In consequence, Jagielski’s artistic development often leads him out onto the territory of yet another tradition of nonfiction writing, the one based on social observation.

W rozmowie Christopher Merrill wyjaśnia, na czym polega szczególne znaczenie detalu w pisarstwie i dziennikarstwie wojennym. Wskazuje, jak dzięki pracy nad detalami pisarze opracowują szerszy kontekst dla obrazów zniszczenia i doświadczeń ze stref wojennych. Przywołuje swoje autobiograficzne doświadczenia z pobytu na Bałkanach w czasie wojny w byłej Jugosławii, z wyjazdu do Afganistanu i innych krajów. Wyjaśnia, na czym polega nauczanie pisarstwa wojennego w oparciu o dobre wzoru z przeszłości i współczesności. Podkreśla, że dopiero konfrontacja z realiami strefy wojennej decyduje o tym, czy czyimś wyborem stanie się pisarstwo wojenne.
In the interview Christopher Merrill explains the role of concrete details in war writing and war journalism. He reveals how drawing on details allows the writers to build the larger context for images of destruction and experiences in the war zones. Merrill recollects his memories from his trips around former Yugoslavia during the Balkan wars, from his journeys to Afghanistan, and other countries. He explains how to teach war writing by looking at good models. According to him only the challenging experience of the war zones lets the writer clarify if he wants to engage into war writing.

The inspiration for this text writing became doctoral seminars, devoted to the theatre of Jerzy Grotowski at the University of Gdansk. During the course, led by Professor Jan Ciechowicz from January to May 2015 it turned out that there was no preserved film documentation of the performances by Laboratory Theatre. The only chance to “watch” the most important spectacles was to use some documentary references, some essays and theatrical reviews, published in the second half of the former century It seemed that the only critic who was able to help us in our analysis and penetrations was Konstanty Puzyna. He has created some special way of writing, of “showing” reader the spectacle, what he could not personally see. In this kind of experimental writing the main tools seemed to be some “pieces” of reportage, documentary text, or nonfiction. This review is about the way in which typical pieces of reportage can be used in modern art criticism, especially in writing about some kind of the experimental theatre. It is also about crossing the border between nonfiction and fictional literature. In the first part some general view of the problem is given, in the main body – the detailed analysis of “Apocalypsis cum figuris” shown by the prism of Puzyna’s text “The return of Christ” – is done.

Opis:
The article presents a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the repertoire of Nasza Księgarnia, a more than 100-year-old Polish publishing house specialising in children’s and youngadult literature, in terms of informational books on nature and ecology. The study covers the years 2011–2021, as a clear increase in the number of such publications was observable all over the world in this period. The main trends in the development of informational books published by Nasza Księgarnia, their dominant themes, and their prevalent genres are identified. Two books on endangered and threatened species are qualitatively analysed by means of Nina Goga’s method as illustrative of the releases and trends under study.
Nell’articolo viene presentata un’analisi quantitativa e qualitativa del catalogo di “Nasza Księgarnia”, casa editrice polacca ultracentenaria specializzata in letteratura per bambini e ragazzi, dal punto di vista della presenza in esso di libri divulgativi su temi legati alla natura e all’ecologia. La ricerca riguarda gli anni 2011–2021, poiché in questo periodo in tutto il mondo si è potuta osservare una crescita di pubblicazioni di questo tipo. Osservando lo sviluppo dei libri di divulgazione editi da “Nasza Księgarnia”, ne sono stati definiti i temi e i generi dominanti. Infine due libri sulle specie in pericolo e in estinzione sono stati sottoposti ad un’analisi quantitativa in base al metodo di Nina Goga, in modo da visualizzare i trend presenti nei titoli presi in considerazione nello studio.
