Opis:
This paper presents an overview of basic concepts, features and difficulties of the boundary element method (BEM) and examples of its application to exterior and interior problems. The basic concepts of the BEM are explained firstly, and different methods for treating the non-uniqueness problem are described. The application of the BEM to half-space problems is feasible by considering a Green’s Function that satisfies the boundary condition on the infinite plane. As a special interior problem, the sound field in an ultrasonic homogenizer is computed. A combination of the BEM and the finite element method (FEM) for treating the problem of acoustic-structure interaction is also described. Finally, variants of the BEM are presented, which can be applied to problems arising in flow acoustics.

Opis:
We are interested in the finite element approximation of Coulomb's frictional unilateral contact problem in linear elasticity. Using a mixed finite element method and an appropriate regularization, it becomes possible to prove existence and uniqueness when the friction coefficient is less than C varepsilon2 |log(h)|{-1}, where h and varepsilon denote the discretization and regularization parameters, respectively. This bound converging very slowly towards 0 when h decreases (in comparison with the already known results of the non-regularized case) suggests a minor dependence of the mesh size on the uniqueness conditions, at least for practical engineering computations. Then we study the solutions of a simple finite element example in the non-regularized case. It can be shown that one, multiple or an infinity of solutions may occur and that, for a given loading, the number of solutions may eventually decrease when the friction coefficient increases.

In this work we consider second order Dirichelet boundary value problem with nonlinearity depending on the derivative. Using a global diffeomorphism theorem we propose a new variational approach leading to the existence and uniqueness result for such problems.

Opis:
TheMoore-Gibson-Thompson [MGT] dynamics is considered. This third order in time evolution arises within the context of acoustic wave propagation with applications in high frequency ultrasound technology. The optimal boundary feedback control is constructed in order to have on-line regulation. The above requires wellposedness of the associated Algebraic Riccati Equation. The paper by Lasiecka and Triggiani (2022) recently contributed a comprehensive study of the Optimal Control Problem for the MGT-third order dynamics with boundary control, over an infinite time-horizon. A critical missing point in such a study is the issue of uniqueness (within a specific class) of the corresponding highly non-standard Algebraic Riccati Equation. The present note resolves this problem in the positive, thus completing the study of Lasiecka and Triggiani (2022) with the final goal of having on line feedback control, which is also optimal.

Opis:
The paper is an attempt to respond to selected problems of the spatial planning system in Lviv, as defined by analyses of strategic documents. Based on the analysis, the authors proposed a spatial planning model considering non-material and hard-to-measure factors which have shaped the city. Lviv was selected for analysis because of its size, its long and multicultural history, and its considerable accumulation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage elements from various eras. Today, the city faces numerous challenges in terms of heritage protection, its functional and spatial development, and the choice of an effective form of planning and management. Hence the need to offer an in-depth reflection on the importance and to consider the rich cultural heritage and non-material factors shaping urban space, in the spatial planning process.
