Opis:
This article deals with the vibrations of a nonprismatic thin-walled beam with an open cross section and any geometrical parameters. The thin-walled beam model presented in this article was described using the membrane shell theory, whilst the equations were derived based on the Vlasov theory assumptions. The model is a generalisation of the model presented by Wilde (1968) in ‘The torsion of thin-walled bars with variable cross-section’, Archives of Mechanics, 4, 20, pp. 431–443. The Hamilton principle was used to derive equations describing the vibrations of the beam. The equations were derived relative to an arbitrary rectilinear reference axis, taking into account the curving of the beam axis and the axis formed by the shear centres of the beam cross sections. In most works known to the present authors, the equations describing the nonprismatic thin-walled beam vibration problem do not take into account the effects stemming from the curving (the inclination of the walls of the thin-walledcross section towards to the beam axis) of the analysed systems. The recurrence algorithm described in Lewanowicz’s work (1976) ‘Construction of a recurrence relation of the lowest order for coefficients of the Gegenbauer series’, Applicationes Mathematicae, XV(3), pp. 345–396, was used to solve the derived equations with variable coefficients. The obtained solutions of the equations have the form of series relative to Legendre polynomials. A numerical example dealing with the free vibrations of the beam was solved to verify the model and the effectiveness of the presented solution method. The results were compared with the results yielded by finite elements method (FEM).

Opis:
To reduce the sediment transport capacity, shear stress needs to be reduced as well. The article describes work that has been done to find a way to make these reductions possible. The theoretical study and the approach proposed allowed us to obtain a general equation that determines conditions and calculates the most important parameters which support the reduction of shear stress. This describes the mechanism that erodes soils by free surface water flow. In a similar vein, we have shown that adding a short non-prismatic channel to the entrance of a prismatic channel, which has the same geometric shape, is a very powerful way to reduce shear stress. With the idea of reducing shear stress, we have shown that the water-surface profile type plays a key role and must therefore be included in future reflections on reducing the importance of shear stress. Additionally, the notion of efficiency was introduced that allows to evaluate the expected gain after the reduction of shear stress and adding a short non-prismatic channel. The laws of similarity applied to free surface flows allowed us to obtain an equation with several equivalence scales and compare different geometric shapes in terms of their efficiency in the reduction of shear stress.

Opis:
The Cunge-Muskingum routing model is one of the most popular and widely used models for hydrologic channel flood routing. The application of Cunge-Muskingum model to an ungauged basin is hindered by the lack of hydro-meteorological data. In the present study, a method is proposed to predict the outflow hydrograph of an ungauged basin as a solution to this problem. The Cunge-Muskingum method is modified, considering the non-prismatic complex natural channel. The Soil Conservation Service Curve Number rainfall-runoff model is employed to obtain the inflow and lateral inflow hydrographs of the ungauged basins, and the Modified Cunge-Muskingum model is employed to anticipate the flood hydrograph at the outlet of the ungauged basin. The proposed approach is employed to the Kulsi River Basin, India, hypothetically treated as an ungauged basin, and the results are compared with the observed data at the outlet of the basin. The performance of the model is evaluated based on RMSE (50.34 m3/s), peak flow error (39.73%), peak flow time error (-3.44%), total volume error (7.36%), relative error (7.36%), mean absolute error (33.5%), correlation coefficient (0.785), coefficient of efficiency (0.59) and Kling-Gupta efficiency (0.66).The results reveal that the proposed Modified Cunge-Muskingum model is an efficient predictor of the flood hydrograph at the outlet of the ungauged basin.

Opis:
In this paper a problem pertaining to the damped lateral vibrations of a beam with different boundary conditions and with a rotational spring is formulated and solved. In the adopted model the vibration energy dissipation derives from the internal damping of the viscoelastic material (Kelvin–Voigt rheological model) of the beam and from the resistance motion in the supports. The rotational spring can be mounted at any chosen position along the beam length. The influence of step changes in the cross-section of the beam on its damped lateral vibrations is also investigated in the paper. The damped vibration frequency and the vibration amplitude decay level are calculated. Changes in the eigenvalues of the beam vibrations along with the changes in the damping ratio and the change in the model geometry observed on it are also presented. The considered beam was treated as Euler- Bernoulli beam.

Opis:
W pracy omówiono zastosowanie metody wielostrzałowej pod kątem użycia jej do analizy stateczności niepryzmatycznych słupów przegubowoprzegubowych o skokowo zmiennej sztywności, obciążonych siłą skupioną przyłożoną do górnego węzła.
The application of multiple shooting method in stability analysis of non-prismatic multi-segment columns with pinned ends loaded with a concentrated force applied to the upper node has been presented. Numerical analyses were carried out for an exemplary three-segment column by solving the system of differential equations with variable coefficients and parameter. The results were compared with the solution obtained by using SOFiSTiK software based on the finite element method. The analyses show that considering the stiffness changes along the length can have a significant influence on the values of critical loads and thus change the resistance of the column. The advantage of the proposed method is its high efficiency and easy description of stiffness changes.

Opis:
The paper contains the results of theoretical and numerical studies within the scope of kinetic criterion of stability loss of slender non-prismatic column subjected to the follower force directed towards the positive pole (the case of specific load). Shape of the system approximation by a linear function and polynomial of degree 2 was considered. On the basis of the Bernoulli – Euler’s theory, the mechanical energy was defined. The differential equations of motion and natural boundary conditions were determined according to the Hamilton’s principle. The issue of free vibrations was solved using the small parameter method. Within the range of numerical calculations, the changes in the eigenvalues were presented as a function of external load with variable geometrical parameters of the system, including parameters resulting from the shape approximation and parameters of loading structure.
