Opis:
The late Early Miocene Dobrotiv Formation, a 700–800-m-thick unit, was deposited in a subsiding platform margin, which become involved in the marginal part of the Outer Eastern Carpathian accretionary wedge. The sedimentary succession from the Sloboda Conglomerate up to the Dobrotiv Formation records a transition from alluvial fan through fan-delta to deltaic deposits, followed by the fluvial plain-channel facies of the Stebnyk Formation. The deltaic deposits are mud-dominated, with poorly developed thickening-up packets of beds. Efficient sediment accumulation was balanced by subsidence caused by subsurface loading. Emerged parts of the deltaic sedimentary system include tetrapod footprints and raindrop imprints. The general absence of mudcracks in the Dobrotiv Formation suggests a humid climate. Deposits of the Sloboda, Dobrotiv and Stebnyk formations form fining- and thinning-upwards clastic wedge successions along the Ukrainian Carpathians.

Opis:
The late Early–Middle Miocene Stebnyk Formation is a ~600–2000 m thick unit of the Boryslav-Pokuttya and Sambir nappes, which contains a molasse succession of the Carpathian Foredeep incorporated within the marginal part of the Outer Eastern Carpathian accretionary wedge. In the valley of thePrutRiver, between Deliatyn and Lanchyn, the Stebnyk Formation covers the alluvial fan deposits of the Sloboda Conglomerate and the deltaic deposits of the Dobrotiv Formation in the south, and the lagoonal salty clays of the Vorotyscha Formation in the north. The Stebnyk Formation is built of mainly rose, greenish and grey calcareous mudstones intercalated with several variable sandstone beds, including thick-bedded packages. The occurrence of tetrapod footprints and raindrop imprints, as well as the overall red-be character prove prevailing continental conditions during deposition of the formation, which is interpreted as sediments of a delta plain with distributary channels filled by the thick sandstone beds and associated by intercalations of thinner beds referred to channel levees and crevasse splays. The upper part of the Stebnyk Formation contains marine microfossils of the NN4 Zone, and locally to the NN5 Zone, corresponding to the early Badenian transgression in the region. In the regional scale, the Stebnyk Formation shows a polarity of facies, with a high contribution of conglomerates and thick-bedded sandstones in the lower part in the north west and fining to the south east, with transportation from the west and north west. The sediments accumulated in an elongated subsiding zone between the rising Carpathian orogen and the forebulge elevation of the foreland, in a warm and semi-dry climatic conditions corresponding roughly to the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum. The accumulation was balanced by a subsidence caused by sinking of the platform slab and by sedimentary loading.

Opis:
The study of upper Cretaceous - lower Tertiary fluvial deposits of the Coalspur Formation in the Foothills region of west-central Alberta reveals that the distribution of early authigenic kaolinite has a well-defined relation to the sequence stratigraphic framework. In this context, it has been observed that the kaolin mineral content increases in sandstones lying below subaerial unconformities, which mark the most significant stratigraphic hiatuses and hence the sequence boundaries in fully fluvial successions. The increased abundance of authigenic kaolinite immediately below sequence boundaries may have been caused by the infiltration of meteoric water during times of subaerial erosion, resulting in the dissolution of unstable minerals (e.g., micas and feldspar) and the formation of kaolinite and secondary porosity. It is therefore suggested that the change in clay mineral assemblages in the stratigraphic section depends in part on the position of the analyzed sandstone samples relative to the sequence boundaries. In a larger context, the method of using authigenic clays to delineate depositional sequences in non-marine successions needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, as the diagnostic early diagenetic minerals underlying the sequence boundary may change as a function of palaeoclimate and also as a function of late diagenetic processes.

Opis:
Species of the ostracod genus Tyrrhenocythere were found in sediments at the western margin of the Danube Basin, dated as Pannonian zone MN9/MN10 of the late Miocene, together with the euryhaline ostracods Euxinocythere, Loxoconcha, Cyprideis, Hemicytheria, Amplocypris, and Paratethyan Candoninae. Sandy and clayey deposits intercalated with lignite seams, as well as the ostracod assemblages, reflect oscillations of Lake Pannon water level and salinity, from freshwater to pliohaline. Tyrrhenocythere most probably evolved by phyletic transformation from Hemicytheria. The hinge and the central muscle scars of Tyrrhenocythere are plesiomorphic characters and the two genera differ in the arrangement of the marginal pore canals (MPC). The transformation of simple, straight and thin MPC in Hemicytheria to polyfurcate MPC in Tyrrhenocythere can be observed in sympatric and contemporaneous populations in Lake Pannon. On the basis of orna− mentation, T. pezinokensis with heavily calcified valves bearing distinct ornamentation could be a descendent of ribbed and heavily calcified Hemicytheria and possibly represents an extinct lineage, while the lightly calcified T. transitivum sp. nov., T. rastislavi sp. nov., and T.sp. 1, and T. sp. 2 are possibly related to reticulated and punctate Hemicytheria. This model assumes that more than one Hemicytheria lineage transformed their arrangement of MPC, and suggests that Tyrrhenocythere is a polyphyletic genus. After the retreat of Lake Pannon, Tyrrhenocythere species immigrated, together with other ostracod and molluscan fauna, into the Dacian Basin and Eastern Paratethys. Later, in the uppermost Messinian, they colonised the western Mediterranean. Late Miocene and Pliocene Tyrrhenocythere are found in brackish or mixed brackish/freshwater taphocoenoses, but the Pleistocene examples also adapted to freshwater/oligohaline lacus− trine environment (Griffiths et al. 2002: 252). While salinity ranges of Tyrrhenocythere have shifted, toward freshwater since the late Miocene, temperature preference did not change. The mean annual air temperature of the Pannonian (15.6–21.7℃) is close to the temperature preference of living Tyrrhenocythere, with mean annual temperature 12 to 16℃. Two new species, T. rastislavi, and T. transitivum are described.

Opis:
The main criterion for selecting materials for marine structures is the requirement of strength, which in shipbuilding is met by steels and high strength aluminum alloys. Internal and external forces acting on the hull of the ship have to be considered during the design process. There are also such factors as wave strength and sea conditions, waves hitting into the bow of the ship, vibrations, thermal differences, load displacement, loads caused by starting and landing aircraft on aircraft carriers, loads that occur upon the sudden immersion in and emerging from water in the case of submarines, effects of fatigue, corrosion cracking, etc. Eddy current thermography is a new non-destructive testing technique for detecting cracks in electro conductive materials. It combines the well-established inspection techniques of eddy current testing and thermography. The technique uses induced eddy currents to heat the sample being tested. Defects are then detected by changes in the flow(s) of induced eddy currents, which are revealed by thermal visualization and captured by an infrared (IR) camera. The paper discusses code for the numerical modeling of nondestructive testing by eddy current IR thermography and of IR testing of materials used in marine structures. The ThermoEdCur computer program developed by Vavilov was used to select suitable heating parameters of the tested metal sheet samples in order to detect subsurface defects.

In 2008 the International Maritime Organization - IMO decided to strengthen the requirements for new ships from 2011 - Tier II. However, for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), such as the Baltic Sea, stringent rules will apply from 1 January 2016 for new ships - Tier III. The new standards introduce restrictions on exhaust emissions from diesel engines - NOx and SOx. The paper presents proposal of new design an existing exhaust gas system of experimental marine diesel engine, which is situated in the Laboratory of Maritime Academy in Szczecin. The conception is due to meet to new environmental regulations. Arrangements of exhaust line, CFD model of the SCR reference plant, CFD model - inlet and outlet boundary conditions, pressure loss model for the catalytic elements, simulation results - streamlines, velocity distribution, reaction progress distribution ate presented in the paper as well design description of system of laboratory- 4-stroke and turbocharged engine. . The means of the reduction systems are based on conventional marine exhaust gas installation that includes noise silencer and soot-catcher. The after-treatment methods do not introduce significant changes in engine arrangement and operation. A new gas purifying system should be installed in the engine exhaust gas system.

This paper describes the experimental method - using non-thermal plasma reactor to cleaning exhaust gases - focused on PM compound. The demonstrator NTP reactor assembly was built as the by-pass in the real exhaust gas after-treatment system, in marine diesel engine. The reactor used to experiment is called - DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) type, The main aim of investigation was to analyze exhaust gas PM compounds under steady load of the engine. Test bench construction enables direct exhaust stream (main exhaust duet by-pass) to plasma reactor exposure with no additional components (coolers, orifices) that can change the exhaust gas properties. A new monitoring PM analyzing system, which can measure soot and SOF in low mass level, has been engaged. It consist of a diffusion charging (DC) detector with a dilution device for soot measurement, and two differential flame ionization detection (FID) method, which uses two FID detectors with separate sample lines. Exhaust emission reduction strategy for ships, Particulate Matters - PM in exhaust gas, non-thermal plasma reactor, experimental test bed and procedure, an example of reactor power measurement, test results provided into seven stages are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Large seagoing vessels are one of the largest pollution sources in the sea environment world. Marine engines operate with extremely low quality fuels contaminated by sulphur and aromatic compounds. Vessels are responsible for an estimated 14 percent total nitrogen oxide emission and 16 percent sulphur oxide, respectively. Nitrogen oxides emissions cause serious problems including acid rain in local areas such as harbours' vicinity. All diesel engine manufacturers have been working on reducing on NOx from ships. This paper describes one of the experimental methods - using non-thermal plasma reactor. NTP reactor was built as the after-treatment module in exhaust gas system in marine diesel engine. Emission measurements were carried out on the engine with and without demonstrator NTP module. The main aim was to analyze exhaust gas compounds during real engine operation, in accordance with test cycles procedureD-2 and E-2 (ISO-8178 rules). The experiment test bench gives the innovative role in the development exhaust gas after-treatment technology for marine systems. One of the most promising methods to decrease the number of toxic compounds from exhaust gas is implementing of NTP reactor as after main treatment module. As the next steps a two-stage plasma-chemical process for the control of harmful compounds: non-thermal plasma reactor and catalyst is proposed. This combination should be more effective and probably gives reduction with more efficiency of harmful exhaust gas compounds.

Ship roll motion in waves can be characterized as a strongly non-linear and multivariable dynamic process which is more affected by disturbances, in general, than by the maximal controlling parameter. The article presents methods of roll motion compensation, the majority of which have been used on ships for many years. Although they are not capable of reducing permanently the error to zero, their potential has still not been used to the full. The operational efficiency of roll motion compensators can be improved using control systems. Research activities are in progress to check the applicability of advanced control methods making use of modern computer techniques. Some of them are mentioned in this paper.

Software DYNMACH has been designed for the dynamic analysis (vibrations) of machines placed on elastic foundation pads assuming non-linear foundation characteristics. Floating platforms of marine engines are designed for noise and vibration isolation between ship hull and engine. Excessive loadings acting on ship hull can be also eliminated by elastic foundation. Analysis of that kind of marine machines is the main target of presented software. It has been assumed that the machines are modeled as rigid bodies while the foundation is treated as a set of elements of non-linear elastic-damping characteristics. Software DYNMACH is the implementation of the Rigid Finite Element Method. A machine can be modeled as a single rigid finite element composed of an arbitrary number of elementary rigid bodies. The following rigid body types are available in the library of the program: a plate, a brick, and a full cylinder. Elastic elements used for foundation modeling can have non-linear stiffness and damping characteristics. These characteristics can be assumed as functions of the foundation displacement or the expected excitation frequency. A built system can be loaded by an arbitrary number of static forces. These static forces are used for a preliminary calculation of strains and the centre of equilibrium, as well as for determination of the stiffness and damping coefficients of the non-linear elastic damping elements in the equilibrium position. Program DYNMACH can calculate the frequencies and modes of natural vibration of the loaded system, as well as calculates of system responses to dynamic excitations. Assuming only small vibration amplitudes the dynamic behaviour of the system can be considered as linear, however, this linear behaviour is imposed on the non-linear equilibrium conditions obtained from the solution of the coupled static problem. Database of different types of rubber machines couplings has been build-in the DYNMACH software.

A non-adaptive controller for a class of vehicles is proposed in this paper. The velocity tracking controller is expressed in terms of the transformed equations of motion in which the obtained inertia matrix is diagonal. The control algorithm takes into account the dynamics of the system, which is included into the velocity gain matrix, and it can be applied for fully actuated vehicles. The considered class of systems includes underwater vehicles, fully actuated hovercrafts, and indoor airship moving with low velocity (below 3 m/s) and under assumption that the external disturbances are weak. The stability of the system under the designed controller is demonstrated by means of a Lyapunov-based argument. Some advantages arising from the use of the controller as well as the robustness to parameters uncertainty are also considered. The performance of the proposed controller is validated via simulation on a 6 DOF robotic indoor airship as well as for underwater vehicle model.
