Opis:
A Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) facility has been in operation at the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC) since 1996. Nonetheless that PGAA is a relatively new method, its applicability to archeological research has already been established by several studies. Archaeologists of the Simón Bolívar University initiated a research project aimed to perform a provenance study of pre-Hispanic pottery figurines. Forty samples were selected from two archaeological sites excavated in the Los Roques Archipelago. Almost five hundred figurines have been recovered altogether in four sites of the Archipelago. Amerindian groups from the adjacent Venezuela mainland were identified as island sites' occupants, between A.D. 1200 and the European contact period. Forty fragments of figurines were investigated by PGAA, the concentrations of major- and some trace components being determined. Among others, K2O, Cl and Cr were found to be the most significant indicators of the samples originated from the Lake Valencia Basin (mainland) and from Los Roques Islands. By relating the island figurines to their stylistical and chemical counterparts from the mainland we will provide chronological information on hundreds of mainland figurines.

Opis:
Infrared thermography using ultrasound thermal excitation of the tested material is one of the most effective methods in non-destructive testing of a multi-layer aramid composite. This type of material is very popular in the construction of light ballistic armours. Typical defects are delamination between layers of aramid fabric joined by resin. They are usually filled with air. Delamination located deep under the surface of the test generates very weak temperature signals. They are often at the level of noise. To reduce the impact of noise on the detection of a defect, special methods of image analysis (thermograms) are used. Such methods include principal component analysis and wavelet analysis. Principal Component Analysis is a relatively new procedure of statistical data treatment, which is becoming increasingly popular in non-destructive testing. Mathematically, it is often regarded as implementation of the so-called singular values decomposition technique, which allows extracting of spatial information from a matrix of source data. The wavelet analysis is an integral transform, which represents the convolution of an analysed process with a special mother function called wavelet. Wavelets are characterized by two parameters: scale and shift. The paper presents a comparison of the efficacy of these methods in the detection of defects in the multilayer composite reinforced aramid fibre.

Opis:
Barely visible impact damage is one of the problems commonly occurring in composite elements during an aircraft operation. The authors described the mechanisms of impact damage formation and propagation in composite structures. The paper presents a performed analysis of an influence of impact parameters on the resulting damage, i.e. its detectability by means of visual observation as well as its extent determined based on ultrasonic tests results. The tests were conducted on the CFRP specimens with a wide range of impact damage cases obtained with combinations of variable impact energy and shapes of impactors. Additionally, an algorithm based on image processing and image analysis methods is proposed for the purpose of the effective evaluation of the ultrasonic data obtained.

Opis:
In the framework of non-destructive evaluation (NDE), an accurate and precise characterization of defects is fundamental. This paper proposes a novel method for characterization of partial detachment of thermal barrier coatings from metallic surfaces, using the long pulsed thermography (LPT). There exist many applications, in which the LPT technique provides clear and intelligible thermograms. The introduced method comprises a series of post-processing operations of the thermal images. The purpose is to improve the linear fit of the cooling stage of the surface under investigation in the logarithmic scale. To this end, additional fit parameters are introduced. Such parameters, defined as damage classifiers, are represented as image maps, allowing for a straightforward localization of the defects. The defect size information provided by each classifier is, then, obtained by means of an automatic segmentation of the images. The main advantages of the proposed technique are the automaticity (due to the image segmentation procedures) and relatively limited uncertainties in the estimation of the defect size.

Opis:
Among non-destructive testing methods of welded joints, a vibrodiagnostic method is one of the most promising in applications intended for the continuous monitoring of the structure. The accelerometer-recorded responses provide diagnostic information that requires mathematical processing to extract the essential features typical of the tested welded joints and to evaluate their execution. For this purpose, the proposed method was based on the determination of damping decrement in function of time. Due to the complexity of the responses run, a proposed method consisted of calculating the damping decrement using the response approximation with different functions. It has been shown that the changes analysis of damping decrement applied to welded plates enables the assessment of the quality associated with the weld. Attention was also paid to the elements relevant to the study. This work presents the algorithm and exemplary results obtained from the application of proposed method to several selected sample plates with different type of welds. A scientific apparatus, which purpose was to record dynamic characteristics of welded joints was also described.

Opis:
In continuous monitoring systems of welded joints of thin-walled structures, a vibrodiagnostic method is the most promising. Its most important advantage is that it is effective and offers the greatest real-time research capabilities. It is used in classic NDT techniques as well as in structural health monitoring during exploitation. This work presents a measurement method of dynamic characteristics of the structure with the use of piezoelectric sensors. The article presents the assumptions concerning the evaluation of welded joints using the analysis of the mean value distribution of the amplitude spectrums calculated by the time window method. The statistical measure used in the form of the mean value is a proposed parameter. The parameter's analysis for a given welded joint may enable an unambiguous assessment of its quality. Attention was paid to the elements important for the study. A calculation algorithm as well as and the exemplary results from the proposed method used for some selected samples with different welds is included in the article. The work contains the description of the scientific apparatus to register dynamic characteristics in case of welded joints. The results of the tests show that the analysis of the distribution of mean value for amplitude spectrums calculated by the time window method indicates that they differ markedly depending on the welds, indicating their quality and defects that are associated with them.

Opis:
This paper presents employment of modern computer methods used to analyze the results obtained during the exploration of concrete elements with an ultrasound tomograph. The results are presented in the form of graphical maps and depiction of the signal course function. The results are burdened with various, errors – noises, distortion of the image. Verification of results requires extensive knowledge, experience in the field of construction diagnostics, and also an ability to combine both: construction and computer methods. Therefore mathematical methods and computer programs become helpful. The perfect transformation for reconstruction and analysis of results seems to be wavelet analysis, which eliminates the weakness of the Fourier transform, which does not included the complete set of information while analysis is carried out.
W artykule przedstawiono wykorzystanie współczesnych metod komputerowych stosowanych do analizy wyników otrzymanych podczas badania elementów betonowych tomografem ultradźwiękowym. Rezultaty prezentowane są w postać map graficznych oraz zobrazowań funkcji przebiegu sygnałów. Otrzymane rezultaty są obarczone różnymi błędami – szumy, dystorsje obrazu. Weryfikacja wyników wymaga dużej wiedzy, doświadczenia w zakresie diagnostyki konstrukcji, a także umiejętności łączenia wiedzy z dziedziny budownictwa i metod obliczeniowych.

Opis:
The task of mobile railway tracks defects diagnostics is to identify and recognize dangerous defects in order to prevent possible accidents. A review of the methods for controlling the physical and mechanical characteristics of metal constructions of engineering objects of long-term exploitation, which are used under different temperature regimes and conditions, is carried out in Among the described non-destructive methods on the used physical fields are allocated: magnetic, acoustic, electromagnetic, thermal and electrical. Electromagnetic methods are successfully used in various industries, such as the railway industry, the metal-working industry, the drilling, nuclear waste storage and so on. In particular, in the railway industry, using the technique of measuring the electromagnetic field of an alternating current, checks of carriages, wheel pairs and tracks are carried out. Recently, hybrid systems of diagnostics on the basis of carriages-defectoscopes are actively used to detect defects in railway tracks while simultaneously using magnetic, ultrasonic, visual-measuring and optical methods of non-destructive control. The high efficiency of new methods for constructing the information diagnostic system (IDS) of mobile magnetic railway tracks defectoscopy objectively depends on the successful solution of the certain contradiction: this is the provision of high resolution and sensitivity of IDS for the detection, differentiation and classification of the defects signals – on the one hand, and on the other hand – reduction of the time allocated for the defectoscopic examination in the conditions of various obstacles and the need for defects detection in the early stages of their development. Solving this contradiction with the use of modern methods of railway tracks defects signals processing and new small size multichannel and component sensors forms the content of an important application problem, which is considered in this article.

Opis:
In this paper a long term observation of the technical state of building positioned in the area of coal mine exploitation is presented. The investigated structure was induced to vibrate using impact excitation. The points of excitation were located on two different pillars supporting the building. In order to extract dynamic parameters of the structure, experimental modal analysis was applied. The parameters of vibration resulting from this excitation were measured by a scanning laser vibrometer. To introduce and compare classical and operational modal analysis, piezoelectric accelerometers were additionally utilized. Moreover, to investigate and explain the changes in the state of the building a finite element model (FE) was built. The analysed building is situated on the terrain of underground coal mine exploitation so the aim of the research was not only to observe the state of the building, but also to analyse possible changes during the process of excavation and after its completion. The building was observed from 2009 to 2012. Identification of the state of building using a laser scanning vibrometer proved feasible and relevant from a practical point of view.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań zrealizowanych w trakcie długookresowej obserwacji stanu technicznego budynku. Badany budynek był pobudzany do drgań z wykorzystaniem wymuszenia impulsowego. Punkty wymuszenia zlokalizowane były na dwóch filarach podtrzymujących kondygnację budynku. Parametry drgań mierzone były z zastosowaniem skanującego wibrometru laserowego. Aby umożliwić porównanie wyników uzyskanych dla klasycznej i eksploatacyjnej analizy modalnej dodatkowo na ścianie budynku zamocowano piezoelektryczne przetworniki drgań. Ponadto, aby umożliwić diagnozę i lokalizację zmian stanu technicznego utworzony został model elementów skończonych badanego obiektu.
