Opis:
To completely characterise the noise behaviour of a two port device, four noise parameters F(min), R(n), G(opt) and B(opt) must be determined. This paper reports improvements in the uncertainty related to the above parameters, taking into account measurement errors due both to the limited instrument precision and connection repeatability. Results are reported for noise characterisation of 0.3 žm delta-doped HEMT devices by Alenia, demonstrating as the common hot-cold measurement procedure can result with an error confidence as low as 0.2% for all the noise parameters.

Wyznaczenie niepewności pomiaru jest koniecznością każdej procedury kontrolnej. Zgodnie z ograniczeniami metody wyznaczenia niepewności pomiarów; (zalecanej w Przewodniku GUM opracowanym pod egida Międzynarodowego Biura Miar (BIPM)); wystąpiła konieczność analizy powiązań czasowych chwilowych wartości poziomu dźwięku LAi , które służą do wyliczeń kontrolowanych wskaźników hałasu. Autorzy rozpatrzyli problem występowania autokorelacji w wynikach pomiaru, regularnie próbkowanych poziomów dźwięku. Przedstawiono niezbędna identyfikację funkcji autokorelacji, dla kontrolowanej zmienności w roku kalendarzowym, równoważnych poziomów dźwięku L Di, L Wi, L Ni, i = 1,2,. .,365. Wskazano niezbędną korektę dotychczasowych rozwiązań oceny niepewności, poprzez wyznaczenie efektywnej liczby nieskorelowanych obserwacji kontrolnych neff, zależnej od funkcji autokorelacji. Rozważania uzupełniono przykładem liczbowym ilustrującym możliwe różnice w ocenach niepewności estymacji wartości kontrolowanych wskaźników hałasu.
The determination of the uncertainty of measurement is a necessity of each control procedure. According to the limitations of the method of uncertainty of measurement determination; (recommended in the Guide of the Central Office of Measurements prepared under auspices of the International Bureau of Measurements); the necessity of analysis of time links of instantaneous sound level LAi values, which are used for calculations of the controlled noise indicators, occurred. The authors considered the problem of an autocorrelation occurrence in measurement results of the regularly sampled sound levels. The indispensable identification of the autocorrelation function for the controlled variability in the calendar year of equivalent sound levels L Di, L Wi, L Ni, I = 1,2,. .,365 – was presented. The necessary correction of the up to now solutions of uncertainty assessments - by determining the effective number of uncorrelated control observations n eff, depended on the autocorrelation function – was indicated. These considerations were supplemented by the numerical example illustrating possible differences in uncertainty assessments in the estimation of the controlled noise indicators values.

Opis:
The acoustic climate assessment needed for the selection of solutions (technical, legal and organisa- tional), which will help to minimise the acoustic hazards in the analysed areas, is realised on the basis of acoustic maps. The reference computational algorithms, assigned to them, require very thorough prepa- ration of input data for the considered noise source model representing – in the best possible way – the acoustic climate. These input data are burdened with certain uncertainties in this class of computational tasks. The uncertainties are related to the problem of selecting proper argument values (from the inter- val of their possible variability) for the modelled processes. This situation has a direct influence on the uncertainty of acoustic maps. The idea of applying the interval arithmetic for the assessment of acoustic models uncertainty is formulated in this paper. The computational formalism assigned to the interval arithmetic was discussed. The rules of interval estimations for the model solutions determining the sound level distribution around the analysed noise source – caused by possible errors in the input data – were presented. The application of this formalism was illustrated in uncertainty assessments of modelling acoustic influences of the railway noise linear source on the environment.

A new method for uncertainty assessment of the sound level originated from identified noise sources and their acoustic background is presented in the paper. The elimination method [1] was applied in order to investigate influence of individual sources on the cumulative noise level. Mathematical operations describing the used computational method were performed in the reduction interval arithmetic formalism [6] to assess the influence of the measuring uncertainty on the calculation results. The measurement values of the total noise level and the noise levels characteristic for disconnections of successive noise sources were presented in the interval numbers. These numbers contain the measurement values and the uncertainty (Tab. 2). The authors determined the ranges of variation for estimates of the noise levels by individual sources and the background noise using the reductive interval arithmetic (Tab. 3). The general uncertainty estimation scheme presented in the paper provides the possibility of taking into account probabilistic information related to the obtained results. The proposed solution was based on measurements realised under laboratory conditions.

Opis:
The assessment of the uncertainty of measurement results, an essential problem in environmental acoustic investigations, is undertaken in the paper. An attention is drawn to the – usually omitted – problem of the verification of assumptions related to using the classic methods of the confidence intervals estimation, for the controlled measuring quantity. Especially the paper directs attention to the need of the verification of the assumption of the normal distribution of the measuring quantity set, being the base for the existing and binding procedures of the acoustic measurements assessment uncertainty. The essence of the undertaken problem concerns the binding legal and standard acts related to acoustic measurements and recommended in: ‘Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement’ (GUM) (OIML 1993), developed under the aegis of the International Bureau of Measures (BIPM). The model legitimacy of the hypothesis of the normal distribution of the measuring quantity set in acoustic measurements is discussed and supplemented by testing its likelihood on the environment acoustic results. The Jarque-Bery test based on skewness and flattening (curtosis) distribution measures was used for the analysis of results verifying the assumption. This test allows for the simultaneous analysis of the deviation from the normal distribution caused both by its skewness and flattening. The performed experiments concerned analyses of the distribution of sound levels: LD, LE, LN, LDWN, being the basic noise indicators in assessments of the environment acoustic hazards.

Opis:
The problem of estimation of the long-term environmental noise hazard indicators and their uncer- tainty is presented in the present paper. The type A standard uncertainty is defined by the standard deviation of the mean. The rules given in the ISO/IEC Guide 98 are used in the calculations. It is usually determined by means of the classic variance estimators, under the following assumptions: the normality of measurements results, adequate sample size, lack of correlation between elements of the sample and observation equivalence. However, such assumptions in relation to the acoustic measurements are rather questionable. This is the reason why the authors indicated the necessity of implementation of non-classical statistical solutions. An estimation idea of seeking density function of long-term noise indicators distri- bution by the kernel density estimation, bootstrap method and Bayesian inference have been formulated. These methods do not generate limitations for form and properties of analyzed statistics. The theoretical basis of the proposed methods is presented in this paper as well as an example of calculation process of expected value and variance of long-term noise indicators LDEN and LN. The illustration of indicated solutions and their usefulness analysis were constant due to monitoring results of traffic noise recorded in Cracow, Poland.

The paper presents a novel hybrid spectrum sensing method used in cognitive radio and presents a hybrid detector (HD) which improves the sensing performance. The proposed HD takes advantage of the energy detection (ED) principle and a method based on Covariance Absolute Value (CAV), as well as on Cyclic Autocorrelation Function (CAF). The paper shows the limitations of using ED, resulting from the uncertainty of spectral density of noise power estimation, known as the SNR wall. The paper describes a system model and presents simulation results for the OFDM signal of a WiMAX-based communications system. The simulation results refer to an ideal environment with well-known parameters, and to an environment with uncertain spectral density of noise power estimation.

Noise is a fundamental metrological characteristic of the instrument in surface topography measurement. Therefore, measurement noise should be thoroughly studied in practical measurement to understand instrument performance and optimize measurement strategy. This paper investigates the measurement noise at different measurement settings using structured illumination microscopy. The investigation shows that the measurement noise may scatter significantly among different measurement settings. Eliminating sample tilt, selecting low vertical scanning interval and high exposure time is helpful to reduce the measurement noise. In order to estimate the influence of noise on the measurement, an approach based on metrological characteristics is proposed. The paper provides a practical guide to understanding measurement noise in a wide range of applications.

Opis:
At the National Institute of Metrological Research (INRIM) an evaluation of a commercial dual source high resistance bridge has been performed. Its two main measurement modes (single measurements and multiple measurements) have been investigated. The best settle time of a 10:1 measurement of high resistance ratio has been estimated to be about three times the time constant of the circuit involving the resistors. This constant, in turn, depends on the highest value resistor. By means of mathematical estimators, suitable numbers of the readings of the detector have been established in order to minimize noises. A compatibility test at 100 TΩ has shown that the best precision of the commercial bridge is achieved utilizing the multiple measurements mode with the auto update function. This mode also allows the characterization of a resistor as a function of the settle time. This characterization can be useful for the owner of the resistor who can request the laboratory to perform the calibration of the resistor with the settle time which is necessary for him.

Opis:
This work proposes a systematic assessment of stereophotogrammetry and noise-floor tests to characterize and quantify the uncertainty and accuracy of a vision-based tracking system. Two stereophotogrammetry sets with different configurations, i.e., some images are designed and their sensitivity is quantified based on several assessments. The first assessment evaluates the image coordinates, stereo angle and reconstruction errors resulting from the stereophotogrammetry procedure, and the second assessment expresses the uncertainty from the variance and bias errors measured from the noise-floor test. These two assessments quantify the uncertainty, while the accuracy of the vision-based tracking system is assessed from three quasi-static tests on a small-scaled specimen. The difference in each stereophotogrammetry set and configuration, as indicated by the stereophotogrammetry and noise-floor assessment, leads to a significant result hat the first stereophotogrammetry set measures the RMSE of 3.6 mm while the second set identifies only 1.6 mm of RMSE. The results of this work recommend a careful and systematic assessment of stereophotogrammetry and noise-floor test results to quantify the uncertainty before the real test to achieve a high displacement accuracy of the vision-based tracking system.

The paper formulates some objections to the methods of evaluation of uncertainty in noise measurement which are presented in two standards: ISO 9612 (2009) and DIN 45641 (1990). In particular, it focuses on approximation of an equivalent sound level by a function which depends on the arithmetic average of sound levels. Depending on the nature of a random sample the exact value of the equivalent sound level may be significantly different from an approximate one, which might lead to erroneous estimation of the uncertainty of noise indicators. The article presents an analysis of this problem and the adequacy of the solution depending on the type of a random sample.

The assessment of uncertainties of a two-port noise parameters measurement, presented in the paper, relies on modeling of sources of errors and an investigation of propagation of the errors through a measurement system. This approach is based on a simplified additive error model and small-change sensitivity analysis. The evaluated uncertainties agrees with those observed in experiments. This method may be implemented in automatic noise measurement systems for on-line uncertainty assessment and for optimization of the design of an experiment.

The minimum size of the bootstrap algorithm input parameters have been determined for estimation of long-term indicators of road traffic noise. Two independent simulation experiments have been performed for that purpose. The first experiment served to determine the impact of original random sample size, and the second to determine the impact of number of the bootstrap replications on the accuracy and uncertainty of estimation of long-term noise indicators. The inference has been carried out based on results of non-parametric statistical test at significance level α = 0:05. The simulation experiments have shown that estimation of long-term noise indicators with uncertainty below ±1 dB(A) requires all-day noise measurements during three randomly selected days during the year in a dense urban development. The maximum size of original random sample should not exceed n = 50 elements. The minimum number of bootstrap replications necessary for estimation should be B = 5000. The data used to the simulation experiments and carry out the analysis were results of continuous monitoring of road traffic noise recorded in 2009 in one of the main arteries of Krakow in Poland.
