Opis:
On the railroads in seismically active regions, the impact of frequent weak earthquakes accelerates the initiation of defects such as wear and tear, cracks and deformation due to fatigue. An analysis of the types and stages of initiation and development of defects preceding accidents at technical facilities has shown that the registration of the beginning of the latent period of transition of objects to an emergency state based on the results of traditional technologies of analysis of measurement information in the applied control systems in the field of railway transport is delayed owing to the difficulties of noise analysis. The proposed algorithms and noise analysis technologies allow forming corresponding sets of informative attributes to control the beginning of the latent period of accidents. Their use in intelligent noise control systems will improve the safety of this mode of transportation. To this end, it is expedient to create a subsystem for noise seismic hazard warning, i.e., a subsystem for noise control of the onset of the initiation and dynamics of development of changes in the technical condition of the rolling stock, railroad tracks, bridges, tunnels, and other railroad infrastructure facilities.

In contrast to traditional systems for monitoring fault of the running gear of the rolling stock, this paper proposes a technology of noise control at the onset of defects. The authors consider the possibility of creating an intelligent system that can perform noise diagnostics with the indication of the beginning of the latent period of the initiation of typical defects preceding faults. To this end, using the noise technology, sets of reference informative attributes are created in the training process. The reference sets, in turn, are used to determine the condition of the object at the beginning of the development of defects by comparing them with current noise estimates. It also allows controlling the dynamics of the development of defects.

Opis:
This paper presents speech enhancement technique based on Spectral Subtraction (SS) method. SS is a renowned noise reduction technique that works on the principle that noise spectrum estimate over the entire speech spectrum can be subtracted from the noisy signal. On the contrary, most of the noise encountered in the real-world conditions is majorly colored. Unlike Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), colored noise does not affect the speech signal uniformly over the entire spectrum. To mitigate effects of colored noise on the processed signal, we propose a Multi-Band Spectral Subtraction (MBSS) method using novel Adaptive-Control Factor (ACF). The spectrum is divided into frequency sub bands based on a nonlinear multi-band frame and various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) are considered. The proposed scheme results in better system performance with quality signal and unlike the basic SS method. It mitigates the effects of anomaly known as “musical” tones artifacts in the processed signal that result in residual noise and speech distortion. The computational complexity involved is minimal. Furthermore, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm removes more colored noise without removing the relatively low amplitude speech signal over the entire speech spectrum. Subjective listening tests, with clean speech signals and different noise levels, show discernable performance of our proposed method when compared with the conventional SS approach.

Opis:
With the growing presence of robots in human populated environments, it becomes necessary to render their presence natural, rather than invasive. To do that, robots need to make sure the acoustic noise induced by their motion does not disturb people nearby. In this line, this paper proposes a method that allows the robot to learn how to control the amount of noise it produces, taking into account the environmental context and the robot’s mechanical characteristics. Concretely, the robot adapts its motion to a speed that allows it to produce less noise than the environment’s background noise and, hence, avoiding to disturb nearby humans. For that, before executing any given task in the environment, the robot learns how much acoustic noise it produces at different speeds in that environment by gathering acoustic informatinon through a microphone. The proposed method was successfully validated on various environments with various background noises. In addition, a PIR sensor was installed on the robot in order to test the robot’s ability to trigger the noise-aware speed control procedure when a person enters the sensor’s field of view. The use of a such a simple sensor aims at demonstrating the ability of the proposed system to be deployed in minimalistic robots, such as micro unmanned aerial vehicles.

The user can choose among single-, two-, and three-approach solution procedures. Heuristic and genetic algorithms are used to determine appropriate noise controls (NCs). From the given noise condition and NC budget, NHP recommends a minimum-cost NHP strategy that prevents any worker’s daily noise exposure from exceeding the permissible level. If the budget is insufficient, NHP is able to search for a feasible noise hazard strategy that requires a minimum NC budget.

Opis:
An analytical design procedure to determine optimal noise hazard control strategies for industrial facilities is presented. Its objective is to determine a set of appropriate noise controls to eliminate or reduce noise levels so that workers’ daily noise exposure does not exceed a permissible level. From a given noise control budget, engineering controls will be firstly implemented, followed by administrative controls, and then the use of hearing protection devices. Six optimization models are developed and sequentially applied to select appropriate noise controls without exceeding the budget. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the application of the proposed design procedure.

In the paper, the results of tests and calculations are presented for acoustic road barrier treated as a plane vibrating surface source emitting acoustic waves. The tests were realized with the use of scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) which enables remote registration and the spectral analysis of vibrations for the points of the square lattice chosen on the tested surface. For comparison obtained data were also analyzed with the LMS Test.Lab software for modal analysis ([1, 2, 3, 9]). The acoustic barrier at S1 road in Sosnowiec was chosen for the in situ tests (Fig. 1). The general view of tested acoustic road barrier spot and measurement configuration is presented in the Figs 2 – 6. For the first time, the comparison was made of data analysis results obtained for acoustic barrier vibrations identified with the use of laser vibrometer PSV-400 internal tools and the ones calculated with the use of LMS Test.Lab software. The results were presented in Tab. 1, Fig. 7 and Fig. 11. In Tab. 2, Tab. 3, Tab.4 and Figs. 8 – 10, MAC coefficients (Modal Assurance Criterion, [4, 5, 6]) and identi-fied vibration modes were presented. The final method being still developed may find use in wide range of applications, e.g. for sound transmission analysis ([7], [8]) of plane acoustic road barriers for different vibration modes.

The assessment of the uncertainty of measurement results, an essential problem in environmental acoustic investigations, is undertaken in the paper. An attention is drawn to the – usually omitted – problem of the verification of assumptions related to using the classic methods of the confidence intervals estimation, for the controlled measuring quantity. Especially the paper directs attention to the need of the verification of the assumption of the normal distribution of the measuring quantity set, being the base for the existing and binding procedures of the acoustic measurements assessment uncertainty. The essence of the undertaken problem concerns the binding legal and standard acts related to acoustic measurements and recommended in: ‘Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement’ (GUM) (OIML 1993), developed under the aegis of the International Bureau of Measures (BIPM). The model legitimacy of the hypothesis of the normal distribution of the measuring quantity set in acoustic measurements is discussed and supplemented by testing its likelihood on the environment acoustic results. The Jarque-Bery test based on skewness and flattening (curtosis) distribution measures was used for the analysis of results verifying the assumption. This test allows for the simultaneous analysis of the deviation from the normal distribution caused both by its skewness and flattening. The performed experiments concerned analyses of the distribution of sound levels: LD, LE, LN, LDWN, being the basic noise indicators in assessments of the environment acoustic hazards.

Opis:
In the areas of acoustic research or applications that deal with not-precisely-known or variable condi- tions, a method of adaptation to the uncertainness or changes is usually necessary. When searching for an adaptation algorithm, it is hard to overlook the least mean squares (LMS) algorithm. Its simplicity, speed of computation, and robustness has won it a wide area of applications: from telecommunication, through acoustics and vibration, to seismology. The algorithm, however, still lacks a full theoretical analysis. This is probabely the cause of its main drawback: the need of a careful choice of the step size – which is the reason why so many variable step size flavors of the LMS algorithm has been developed. This paper contributes to both the above mentioned characteristics of the LMS algorithm. First, it shows a derivation of a new necessary condition for the LMS algorithm convergence. The condition, although weak, proved useful in developing a new variable step size LMS algorithm which appeared to be quite different from the algorithms known from the literature. Moreover, the algorithm proved to be effective in both simulations and laboratory experiments, covering two possible applications: adaptive line enhancement and active noise control.

Opis:
The Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm and its variants are currently the most frequently used adaptation algorithms; therefore, it is desirable to understand them thoroughly from both theoretical and practical points of view. One of the main aspects studied in the literature is the influence of the step size on stability or convergence of LMS-based algorithms. Different publications provide different stability upper bounds, but a lower bound is always set to zero. However, they are mostly based on statistical analysis. In this paper we show, by means of control theoretic analysis confirmed by simulations, that for the leaky LMS algorithm, a small negative step size is allowed. Moreover, the control theoretic approach alows to minimize the number of assumptions necessary to prove the new condition. Thus, although a positive step size is fully justified for practical applications since it reduces the mean-square error, knowledge about an allowed small negative step size is important from a cognitive point of view.

Opis:
Structural active noise control (ANC) is one of few solutions applicable when global noise reduction is required: control of a whole device casing allows to lower the acoustic energy emitted by this device. Unfortunately, structural ANC usually requires a large number of sensors and actuators, making the control system multichannel with large dimensionality. This in turn presents a huge computational power demands. There are several ways to lower this demand, the partial updates being one of them. The goal of this paper is to show applicability of the leaky partial update LMS algorithms in structural ANC of a washing machine casing. The transfer functions of the numerous device paths were identified using a real washing machine in the ANC laboratory. The identified transfer functions allowed to create a simulation system, where different algorithms could be easily tested. The results of the simulations confirm effectiveness of the proposed solution.

During operation, construction machines generate high noise levels which can adversely affect the health and the job performance of operators. The noise control techniques currently applied to reduce the noise transmitted into the operator cab are all based on the decrease of the sound pressure level. Merely reducing this noise parameter may be suitable for the compliance with the legislative requirements but, unfortunately, it is not sufficient to improve the subjective human response to noise. The absolute necessity to guarantee comfortable and safe conditions for workers, requires a change of perspective and the identification of different noise control criteria able to combine the reduction of noise levels with that of psychophysical descriptors representing those noise attributes related to the subjective acoustical discomfort. This paper presents the results of a study concerning the “customization” of a methodology based on Sound Quality for the noise control of construction machines. The purpose is to define new hearing-related criteria for the noise control able to guarantee not only reduced noise levels at the operator position but also a reduced annoyance perception.

Nowadays, noise generated by devices is a serious issue in industry and in everyday life, because it may cause health damage to humans. In this research, a cubic rigid device casing built of double-panel thin steel walls is employed to reduce noise emitted from an enclosed noise source. Double-panel structure is used because of good sound insulation it provides. There exist three main groups of noise reduction methods, i.e. passive, semi-active and active. In this paper, a semi-active modification of double-panel structure is applied and examined. The bistable actuator (solenoid) mounted between incident and radiating plates changes its state due to applied constant voltage, causing the coupling of plates. Experimentally measured natural frequencies and modeshapes of the structure are compared to the simulation results. The influence of proposed modification on dynamical properties of the structure is analyzed and discussed.

Zastosowanie systemu operacyjnego Linux w implementacji układu ARH przynosi szereg korzyści zwłaszcza zwiększa możliwości rozwoju i debuggingu oprogramowania, Linux daje również dostęp do ogromnej ilości otwartego oprogramowania. W prezentowanym rozwiązaniu w oparciu o system operacyjny Linux stworzono aplikację integrującą funkcje webserwera z układem aktywnej redukcji hałasu, dynamicznie tworzone strony internetowe tworzą graficzny interfejs użytkownika systemu ARH dostępny poprzez przeglądarkę internetową.
The idea of ANC is concerned with attenuation of unwanted low frequency sound (noise). As a result, a three-dimensional zone of quiet is created around the selected microphones. The paper describes ANC system implementation running under the uClinux system on dual core Analog Devices Blackfin DSP. The uClinux is proving to be a low-cost, dynamic development environment. On multi-core Blackfin DSPs, it is possible to overcome the main disadvantage of Linux - lack of hard-real time functionality indispensable for signal processing applications. It can be achieved by separation of the real-time signal processing code and handling it on a dedicated core, while the other core is running Linux. Such a solution offers advantages to designers, most notably by opening up a wide range of applications, drivers and protocols which often are open-source or free software. In most cases, only a compilation or some minor tweaking is necessary to get that software up and running. The advantages for using Linux in the ANC system are ease of use, better system control, easy possibility of creating web based user interfaces and improved debugging capabilities. In this particular application, use of Linux enables a Web server integration into the ANC system. Dynamically created web pages can be accessed by any web browser and become the graphical user interface to the ANC system.
