    Opis:
    The tradition is constituted by the norms of conduct of the gentes and the patrician familiae. The right is the foundation of the ruling class power of the patricians first, of the patrician-plebeian nobilitas then. The hegemony of the pontiffs in the juridical field is subsequently questioned by the iurisprudentia, starting from the 3rd century BC. We examine the legal value of mos and consuetudo as sources of law in Cicero. Afterwards, we evoke the crisis of tradition and the evolution of right caused by changing social and political conditions. The mos maiorum knows the maximum crisis in the late-Republican age. Cicero considers it necessary to implement a critical revision of the mos maiorum. However, the individualism present at the time of the author makes the moral and political rebirth of Rome impossible.

    Ancient literary sources devote little space to historical female figures. However, we can find there a few portraits of old women from nobilitas who were treated respectfully and in their old age they lived in prosperity. Their relatives and friends listened carefully to their advice. These women were Werturia – the mother of Coriolanus, Cornelia – mother of Cracchii, Terentia – the wife of Cicero and Caerelia – his friend.

    Opis:
    A letter by Niccolò Perotti This paper is dedicated to a letter that Niccolò Perotti wrote to a friend. It is divided into two parts. The first part is an introduction to the letter. It presents an autobiography of the Renaissance humanist with special emphasis placed on his translations of ancient Greek texts into Latin. Jean-Louis Charlet, the leading researcher on the Italian’s works, highlights the importance of this particular letter for establishing the chronology of translations and Perotti’s other works, as well as his date of birth and other major events in his life. The introduction also discusses the epistolary art, which Perotti practiced and whose grammatical rules he wrote down so he could study them. Next, the author considers the subject matter of the letter, which oscillates between the notions of vera nobilitas and homo novus. Perotti decides to give himself over to literary activities and he substantiates his choice in a form of examination of conscience. For him as a humanist, who often avails himself of quotes from Pliny the Younger, true nobility arises out of the virtues of reason and is not based on material goods. In his deliberations, Perotti follows such remarkable minds as Petrarch, Poggio Bracciolini and Buonaccorso da Montemagno. He quotes Petrarch on the magnitude of human thought, Bracciolini on the threats arising from the desire for wealth, and Montemagno on the true source of nobility lying in virtue and a person’s work, but not in the right of inheritance. Finally, these thoughts are collated with the Stoic philosophy of Epictetus. Having translated Encheiridion, Perotti filled his epistolary confessions with an echo of the Stoic’s teachings. These mostly concern taking care of one’s soul and not becoming attached to material goods, obtained by twist of fate. In the second part, the author presents a collective translation of the discussed letter, preserved in manuscript in the Vatican Library (Vat. lat. 3027, f.115r–f.118r). It is a very important autobiographical document that allows the reader to look upon Perotti’s work in the context of the popularization of ancient Greek thought, as well as to his motivations and the internal dilemmas that were entailed in this undertaking.

Opisuje środowiskowe powiązania Jana Jerzego Cygana oraz więzi łączące go ze światem nobilitas literaria. Przedstawia zachowane do dzisiaj książki stanowiące własność pana na Frysztacie oraz zdobiący je superekslibris barona, jeden z dwóch znanych obecnie tego rodzaju szlacheckich znaków własnościowych z terenu księstwa cieszyńskiego
    Freiherr Johann Georg Czigan von Slupsk auf Freistadt und Dobroslawitz, who died in 1640, was the patron and friend of the Silesian poets Daniel Czepko and Wenzel Scherffer von Scherfferstein. With their poetic messages, they contributed to the dissemination of the image of the Freiherr von Slupsk as an erudite and book lover. This article attempts to verify the above opinion and identify the sources of the intellectual formation of Johann Georg Czigan and the genesis of his literary and bibliophile interests. It describes the environmental connections of Johann Georg Czigan and the ties that connected him with the world of nobilitas literaria. It presents books that were his property and have survived to this day, adorned with the baron’s supralibros, one of the two currently known aristocratic proprietary marks of this kind from the Duchy of Cieszyn.
