Opis:
The present study investigated the effect of surface roughness on plasma assisted nitriding (PAN) process kinetics of Ni-base alloys. Two model alloys, namely Ni-10Cr and Ni-14Cr-4Al (wt.%) and commercial Rene 80, were examined. To elucidate the effect of surface roughness on nitriding kinetics, three methods of surface preparation were used, (1) polishing up with 1 μm diamond suspension, (2) grinding up to 220 grit sand-paper, and (3) grit blasting. The samples from each type of material were nitrided under the same conditions and investigated after processing. It was found that increase in roughness results in decreasing nitriding kinetics. The decrease of nitriding kinetics depends on alloy chemical composition, namely more complex chemistry resulted in smaller decrease of kinetics. Moreover, grit-blasting was found to be an improper method for surface preparation for PAN. The responsible mechanism for the effect of surface roughness on PAN kinetics of Ni-base alloys was proposed.

Opis:
The paper presents a comparison of the nitrided layer structure and morphology formed with a conventional controlled gas method, widely use in industrial applications and a layer formed with cathode plasma nitriding (CPN) and active screen plasma nitriding (ASPN). Nitriding processes were realized at 793K for different times and altering parameters, depending on the nitriding process technique. Research have been realized on the Fe Armco material using light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM, SEM/EBSD), X-ray diffraction (XRD-GID) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Analysis of the results has confirmed that the structure of the nitrided layer depends mainly on process methodology. In addition Authors has also analyzed kinetics of the process which varies and depends mainly from the surface layer saturation mechanism and nitriding parameters. Acquired knowledge on the structural components of the nitrided layer made it possible to optimize the nitriding parameters in order to reduce or even eliminate the usually unfavorable, brittle compounds and porous zones and of the nitrided layer in the aspect of exploitation properties improvement of the metallic materials.

Opis:
The present research investigates the nitriding kinetics of the near-beta-titanium alloy of Ti-Al-Nb-Fe-Zr-Mo-V system at 750, 800, and 850°C in gaseous nitrogen at 105 Pa for 2, 4, and 8 h. The parabolic coefficient kp of the layer’s growth rate and the nitriding activation energy E are set as the kinetic parameters of the nitrided layer’s growth. The activation energy for the formation of a nitride layer is ~108 kJ/mol. The authors discuss the morphology of the nitride layers as well as their roughness and surface hardness. The study determines the effective diffusion coefficient for the growth of diffusion layers in the temperature range of 750...850°C: Def = D0× exp (-E/RT), where D0 = 0.0177 m2 /s; E = 215.7 kJ/mol. The friction coefficient of the disk from nearbeta-titanium alloy with a bronze block is lowered by significantly more than 10 times after gas nitriding, and the temperature in the friction zone is reduced by 2.5 times.

Opis:
This article presents simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth. Simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth is an application, which supports new method of controlled gas nitriding called ZeroFlow. ZeroFlow method is used for nitriding selected car engine parts, such as crankshafts, camshafts, piston rings, poppet valve springs and discs, piston pins or nozzles for unit injectors. Through the use of simulation models, it is possible to develop the especially dedicated processes with specific parameters for each of this parts, which means that simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth enables forming of nitrided layer with strictly defined properties: required phase structure with thicknesses of particular zones that occurs in it and required hardness distribution. Moreover, using simulation models this layers are obtained in the shortest possible time, which is connected with the lowest energy and gases consumption; therefore, nitriding process using ZeroFlow method (and simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth) is both economical and environmentally friendly and meets with an increasing interest from the industrial consumers. Particular examples of industrial applications of simulator will be mentioned in article. Moreover, this article will show main functions, possibilities and advantages of simulator program; it will also present function called “simulation solver”, which allows optimization of process parameters.

This article will discuss the essence of controlled gas nitriding process, with an emphasis on the influence of process parameters on results of nitriding process. This information are the basis to understand the issue of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth, and as it follows – for its practical application in designing, regulation and control of nitriding processes using simulation models (simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth). Designing of ZeroFlow nitriding processes on the basis of the kinetics of nitrided layer will be shown on the example of nitriding of crankshafts for sports car engines.
