The article proposes a new reading of Album biograficzne zasłużonych Polaków i Polek wieku XIX (1901–1903) [Biographic album of distinguished nineteenth-century Polish men and women (1901–1903)]. It is proven that this collection of characteristically designed biographies and an unusual collective biography is an important work of Polish humanities of the turn of the twentieth century that can be placed in relation to both Thomas Carlyle’s hero concept and Jacob Burckhardt’s postulates of the ‘anthropologisation of history’. The three selected biograms (Klaudyna Potocka’s by Aleksander Kraushar, August Hiacynt Dziarkowski’s by Józef Peszke and Adolf Pawiński’s by Jan Karol Kochanowski) are case studies allowing for the reconstruction of the dilemmas and text strategies each time specifying the biographer’s unique workshop and the techniques of uncovering it.

The purpose of this article is to present grammatical achievements of Franciszek Betlejczyk, a nineteenth century linguistic publicist, representing the normative approach. Betlejczyk’s scientific achievements have been presented in the context of accomplishments of Onufry Kopczyński and Jan Niecisław Baudouin de Courtenay, whose dissertation titled “O drěvnepol’skom jazyke do XIV-go stolětija” gave rise to scholarly Polish linguistics. This article discusses Betlejczyk’s most important works, which contain numerous, accurate assessments of the Polish language of the time.

Opis:
This article falls into the trend of restoring the memory of the so-called creators of minorum gentium, that is, „smaller format”. It contains basic biographical information which was obtained through the inquiry, concerning the forgotten Lviv writer Bolesław Eulenfeld, as well as a literary sketch of his work, along with its reception at the time (and contemporary). During his lifetime, Eulenfeld was an extremely prolific and popular playwright in Galicia, children’s literature writer, and even an actor for several years. Today he is mentioned rarely, hardly ever, so we decided to bring his profile closer and restore the memory of him.

Throughout history, vagrancy appears as one of the notions of the Human Condition. Its artistic and poetical representations are drawn from multiple sources and offer various models. The fantasy of vagrancy in French poetry in the second half of the Nineteenth Century is fashioned as much through the vagrant’s relationship with space as with Society. Its models spring from marginality and contestation. Spatial structure presents an opposition between « closed » and « open », « interior » and « exterior », and so forth... These separations fluctuate and interact mutually. The poet conjures, from any questing, marginal figure, his own image. The general tendency, from Hugo to Rimbaud, shows both a crushing of the poetical figure, transforming it into a magus or a prophet, and the proliferation of the accursed poet’s « negating anger ».

Persistence of Synonymy in Polish Medical Terminology at the Turn of the Nineteenth and Twentieth CenturiesThis article presents the results of an analysis of 940 synonymic strings excerpted from two translated medical dictionaries: Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej [A Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology], published in 1881, and Słownik lekarski polski [A Polish Medical Dictionary], published in 1905. The analysis of quantitative and qualitative changes in those strings indicates a significant persistence (703 preserved strings) and stability of synonymy (320 strings with the same number of terms and the same composition of synonyms).Trwałość synonimii w polskiej terminologii medycznej przełomu XIX i XX wiekuArtykuł przedstawia wyniki analizy 940 ciągów synonimicznych wyekscerpowanych ze Słownika terminologii lekarskiej polskiej, wydanego w 1881 roku, i Słownika lekarskiego polskiego, wydanego w 1905 roku; obydwa słowniki to leksykony przekładowe. This article regards Norwid’s Tajemnica Lorda Singelworth in the context of his anthropology as well as historical and cultural background. The author’s notion of “cleanliness,” inspired in some measure by the Gospels, is connected to the circumstances of both Norwid himself and the main character of his puzzling novella. This reading revolves around the image of a balloon flight during which the Lord – as it is argued, following hints already present in studies of Norwid – discards a piece of paper with “physiological content.” This scene is placed in the context of other literary balloon flights and the eccentricity of Baudelaire’s friend Philoxène Boyer. Finally, the article discusses Norwid’s law of inversion, which can be applied in the case of Singelworth.

The article discusses linguistic and non-verbal features of 19th-century savoir-ivre. Babie lato [Indian Summer] by Stefania Ulanowska (1839–?), the source text under scrutiny, is a 21-page short story, which has most probably never come out in print. There are four conversation situations in the text: 1) a symmetrical setup (the interlocutors have equal social status and comparable pragmatic rank), 2) a symmetrical setup with asymmetrical features, related to the conversation between a man and a woman, 3) a less distanced asymmetrical setup, where the participants of the conversation are the mother and children, 4) a full asymmetric setup, in which the mistress of the house addresses the maid. The short story moreover features non-verbal etiquette features, such as a man tipping over his hat when he sees a woman and a man kissing a woman’s hand. The characteristics of etiquette observed in Babie lato are a supplement to the deliberations on savoir-vivre in the 19th century and confirm the changes that took place at that time in terms of courtesy in comparison with the old Polish period. They are also a testimony to the old culture of the nobility, transferred to bourgeoisie houses.

Sabina Brzozowska’s monograph consists of a coherent collection of comparative and historical and literary studies of various artistic and ideological aspects found in selected works of Polish and European modernism. The author focuses on the dramas by Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Tadeusz Rittner, Tadeusz Miciński and on the prose by Wacław Berent, Miciński and Thomas Mann. The interpretations of the works included in the monograph show a common area of European nineteenth-century culture, especially of the modernist period. Brzozowska’s reading experience focused on uncovering the intertextual and comparative relationships between, for instance, Wyspiański’s Wesele (The Wedding) and Mann’s Buddenbrooks, Berent’s Ozimina (Snow Crop) and Czarodziejska Góra (The Magic Mountain), Rittner and Ibsen. High art literature of the modernist period found its counterpoint in popular culture, including the new media. The author reconstructed this development dynamic of modernist culture in multiple versions.

The patterns of recording the names of German residents in Kėdainiai in the nineteenth century: Introductory remarksThe article analyses the patterns of recording German surnames in the town of Kėdainiai in the nineteenth century on the basis of about 350 names extracted from archival records; all of them refer to different individuals. Although the settlers of German origin who arrived in Kėdainiai from 1629 already had their surnames, the patterns of their recording varied. This is particularly obvious in cases where members of the same family (e.g. husband and wife) were recorded side by side. In some instances, the woman’s given and maiden names were omitted. Furthermore, some record files of the magistrate indicate only the surname of the litigating spouses. Also, a person (plaintiff, defendant, etc.) mentioned in one document could be referred to in a shorter, simpler or just different form in another record of the trial. More diversity can be observed in the case of the names of female members of the German community in Kėdainiai. On the 1840 list of persons who fulfilled religious rites (received communion) in Kėdainiai (in Keydan), as well as in other parish registers, the surnames of women of German ancestry appear in the same form as those of their husbands or fathers, i.e. without Slavic suffixes (unlike in the book of acts of Kėdainiai of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries). Pomimo tego, że osoby pochodzenia niemieckiego, które osiedlały się w Kiejdanach od 1629 roku, miały już uformowane nazwiska, sposób ich zapisu był niejednorodny. Jest to wyraźnie widoczne zwłaszcza w przypadkach, gdy członkowie jednej rodziny (np. mąż i żona) figurują w księgach obok siebie. Imię kobiety i jej nazwisko panieńskie niejednokrotnie pomijano. Niektóre zapisy ksiąg magistrackich podają jedynie nazwisko małżonków będących stroną procesu. Zdarza się również, że osoba występująca w procesie cywilnym (powód, pozwany itd.) jest określana różnie w rozmaitych zapisach odnoszących do tej samej sprawy: forma może być krótsza, prostsza lub po prostu inna. W kiejdańskich źródłach archiwalnych zaobserwowano większą rozbieżność form zapisu w przypadku niemieckich nazwisk osób płci żeńskiej. Na pochodzącej z roku 1840 liście osób, które przystąpiły do sakramentu komunii, jak również w innych księgach parafialnych nazwiska pojawiają się w identycznej formie bez względu na płeć, tzn. bez słowiańskich przyrostków żeńskich (czyli odmiennie niż w księgach kiejdańskich z XVII i XVIII wieku). Nazwiska zapisywane były przez osoby pochodzenia niemieckiego lub dobrze posługujące się niemczyzną.

Among Edvard Munch’s many portraits of Henrik Ibsen, the famous Norwegian dramatist and Munch’s senior by a generation, one stands out. Large in scope and with a characteristic pallet of roughly hewed gray blue, green and yellow, the sketch is given the title Geniuses. Munch’s sketch shows Ibsen, who had died a few years earlier, in the company of Socrates and Nietzsche. The picture was a working sketch for a painting commissioned by the University. While Munch, in the end, chose a different motif for his commission, it is nonetheless significant that he found it appropriate to portrait the Norwegian dramatist in the company of key European philosophers, indeed the whole span of the European philosophical tradition from its early beginnings to its most controversial spokesman in the late 1800s. In my article, I seek to take seriously Munch’s bold and original positioning of Ibsen in the company of philosophers. Focusing on Hedda Gabler-a play about love lost and lives unlived-I explore the aesthetic-philosophical ramifications of Ibsen’s peculiar position between realism and modernism. This position, I suggest, is also reflected in Munch’s sketches for the set design for Hermann Bahr’s 1906 production of the play.

Unclear meanings of selected verbs from the first half of 19th century (based on Podróż bez celu by Fryderyk Skarbek) The aim of the article is to initiate the lexical research of Polish novels from 1800–1830. It is pursued by analyzing the meanings of verbs on the basis of Podróż bez celu (1824–1825) by Fryderyk Skarbek. In the conducted research, both the methods of computer linguistics and the classical philological method were used, which allowed for the necessary immersion into contexts and connotations. Verbs with meanings not noted in modern dictionaries of the Polish language were subjected to a detailed analysis. From the perspective of the general contemporary language, these are lexical, semantic and morphological archaisms. Half of them disappeared completely, in the remaining ones there were semantic shifts: extensions, narrowing, changes in designation, the analysis of which proves a significant tendency of the nineteenth-century resource to differentiate and expand.

The Polish Lutheran Church between the years 1945-1956 was unable to gain the full confidence of its new German worshippers. This resulted in the treatment of this Church as a foreign and imposed one. When, in the course of time, the worshippers came to terms with the status quo, acceptance of the Church increased, but as a factor distinguishing them from Polish Catholics. The distance dividing them from migrant Poles, caused by national factors and historical experiences, was increased by religious differences. A significant role in this situation was played by the Small Group Movement. It did not have an organized nature, but its mental revivalist structuressurvived the period of the Second World War. An awareness of war atrocities strengthened the spirit of eschatology among some of the Small Group Movement members, which is why some of them accepted the existing political situation, regarding it as a penalty for disregarding God’s rules. Some of the Small Group Movement members, especially those who were previously in opposition to German Christians, began to co-operate with the Polish Lutheran Church, which was new to them. On the other hand, for some of the worshippers who existed in unofficial structures, there was an opportunity to fulfill their basic religious needs, which the Polish Lutheran Church was unable to offer them due to its organizational weakness. From the very beginning the key problem of organization was that caused by language, which was a throw-back to the situation in the nine-teenth century and the first years of Weimar Republic, when German was still considered to be “the Church language”. This was the reason why a significant part of the Small Group Movement met with mistrust from the Polish Lutheran Church, which for various reasons was implementing a Polonisation policy, and the open hostility of the police-administrative machinery. On the other hand, inside the Small Group Movement, there was little unity but numerous scattered initiatives, and an escalation of German national spirit became in many instances equally important, or even more important than religious matters.
