The wild boar and the bear have been present in people's beliefs and customs from time immemorial. This was the case both with beliefs of representatives of folk culture – e.g. peasants in Byelorussia or shepherds in Silesia – and with recipients of high-brow and sophisticated chronicles written by medieval historians. The boar and the bear lived side by side, and this common presence – both the real one, connected with their similar habitats, and the proximity in the sphere of material and spiritual culture – could lead to the features of both these animals merging in one image, that is in the Sokola coat of arms, in which one can see a half-boar and half-bear.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present issues connected with “invisible” (from an archaeological point of view) tombs of the circle of cultures with funnel beakers. Four examples were selected to illustrate this problem. They are associated with discoveries on the following sites: Niedźwiedź, Zauschwitz, Bochum-Hiltrop and Schipluiden. Bedding trenches, forming structures in the shape of trapezes – rectangles were discovered on them. They were all originally interpreted as relics of long houses. Only the recent studies indicate their connection with the long tombs tradition. The author presents a thesis that the title “invisibility” of these structures is not due to its state of preservation. It is rather a result of oversimplifying criteria of interpretation. It is probable that next discoveries of tombs of the type described in the paper will be associated with reinterpretation of the already known objects, but considered as houses.

Opis:
There have been two periods of change in the dynamics of bear population in the Eastern Carpathians. The first period lasted over 50 years, starting in the late 1940s and ending in the year 2001. The second period started in the early 21st century. The bear population reached its maximum- of about 1100 individuals - in the early 1970s. Over 85% of recorded bear deaths have resulted from poaching.

The city on a rhetorical foundation The article is a review of Jakub Niedźwiedź’s latest book concerning literacy in medieval and early modern Vilnius. The author analyzes the notion of ‘the rhetorical organization of the city’ employed by Niedźwiedź in his book and points out some consequences stemming from the way such notions as ‘text’ and ‘rhetoric’ are used in it. The reviewer also emphasizes the signifi cance of the book as both a statement in the discussion concerning the dematerialization of the text in modern literary studies and as a work that may inspire a number of similar research projects.

The paper analyses knowledge of secondary school pupils from Ustrzyki Dolne and tourists visiting the Bieszczady National Park. Both groups were surveyed in 2011−2012. Tourists and pupils were well−informed about the presence of brown bear in the Bieszczady (96%), but far less about its distribution in other mountain ranges. Nearly 30% of the questioned tourists were not aware of the fact that leaving organic leftovers is not allowed in bear habitats and both groups had problems with indicating the actual dangers for the population of brown bear in Poland. The most frequent reported damages caused by bears in Poland such as damages in apiaries were indicated by small number of pupils (6%), while the majority pointed out attacks on human (44%) and damages in households (21%). About 31% of pupils wrongly stated that fishes are often eaten by bears in Poland. Only a few of them (4%) wrote about leftovers as a possible source of food for bears. The research indicates that it is urgent to enhance a knowledge about a distribution of brown bear in Poland and a correct waste management in areas where bears are present.

Opis:
Debarking of trees and foraging on the phloem is an economical problem for forestry in North America. Scientists in America investigated the feeding behavior of black bears (Ursus americanus) during the spring while this problem was only partially investigated in Poland. In the Polish Carpathians most damage occurs on coniferous trees such as fir Abies alba, larch Larix decidua and spruce Picea abies.
