Opis:
The paper discusses the news on Polish TV channels. The author argues that the process of selection of information and their aesthetics are governed by laws similar to those that govern every other commodity on the trade market. Together with information, a viewer is sold a full package of ideas, a certain attitude to the world, whose essence is consumerism. An important part of the text provides a detailed analysis of one edition of the evening news station TVN24, which supplied arguments in favour of the thesis presented.

Opis:
The article examines the role of food in shaping the Italian national identity based on the example of Italian football language in the most-read Italian newspaper entitled “La Gazzetta dello Sport” (www.gazzetta. it). At first, the concept of identity is analyzed and then its particular shades in the case of Italy and the attitude of Italians toward food, its importance and widespread occurrence within the entire country will be discussed. In fact, the food is a factor which seems to be a bonding element for all Italians and a means of expressing the current Italian national identity. The author identifies it as the Italian culinary identity. The phenomenon can be observed in such presently existing Italian culinary terms as cioccolatino, brodino, biscotto, spezzatino, mangiarsi un gol and the like that are used in Italian football news.

Opis:
Th is paper examines the thematic structure of written media texts published in two national Polish and British dailies, namely Gazeta Wyborcza and Th e Guardian. Th e investigation, based on traditional content analysis methods, includes over a thousand articles published between January 14, 2010 and February 10, 2010. Th e analysis of data includes a study of frequency of occurrence of individual topics. Results are interpreted with reference to Hofstede’s 5D model and Hall’s division of societies into high-context and low-context cultures. Th e investigation reveals signifi cant correlation between the frequency of occurrence of individual topics and cultural patterns characteristic to national culture, especially in the dimensions of uncertainty avoidance and individualism vs. collectivism. It is argued that the results of the study support a belief that culture wields an infl uence on language. Th e author concludes that the impact that culture has on language in press starts at the level of news values — the criteria of prominence of media texts.

Opis:
The sketch presents tabloid as a neutral, not laden by emotions (hence I renounce such terms as yellow paper, scandal sheet, or rag), manner by which to sell information and entertainment. Sometimes I use such terms as sensational press, but this concerns only some tabloids. I analyze how this form of communication in social reality influences the processes of the democratization of society (extension of the freedom of the individual), how it extends the concepts of public debate on democracy, understood here as a participation in political life and in matters that have a bearing on political life. Taking the stance of a representative of political sciences, historian of ideas, specialist in media, I analyze the genesis of the idea of tabloid and the characteristic elements of this press. I point only to some factors.
