The article explores urban social movements. It is the city that sets out stimulating strategies for building a social movement and forms of its activities and protest. The article is based on ethnographic studies conducted among activists from movements opposing neoliberalism, anti-corporate movements and the alter-globalist movement. Urban activities and protest tactics are treated as an emanation of their chief ideologies and means of articulating fundamental political postulates.

One of the concomitants of migration is the danger posed by armed conflicts which are transposed from the country of origin of the migrants to the territory of the receiving country. The article analyses this issue by presenting the current situation in Germany. It discusses the conflict between the Turks and Kurds which took place in the 90s and the danger posed by the radicalisation of Muslim communities, especially the Salafis. Several internal threats can be identified: the recruitment of foreigners and German nationals to fight for the Islamic State, the return of welltrained terrorists who are willing to continue jihad in Germany, and also the so-called individual jihad, that is terrorist attacks committed by people not affiliated with any organization. The current situation is responsible for a rise in ‘anti-Islamic’ feelings and the inception of such new movements as PEGIDA, LeGIDA or HoGeSa (Hooligans Against Salafi s), which in turn leads to further rioting and unrest. The State defends against this threat by increasing the surveillance of suspects, banning the activities of radical organisations, counteracting recruitment, blocking collection of money, restricting freedom of movement abroad and so on. However, due to the peculiarity of radical movements and the nature of their activities, it is necessary to implement a more comprehensive strategy, as even the best integration programmes fail to succeed.

The author is reconstructing religious doctrines of salvation in Polish neopagan movements. Conclusions were drawn on the base analysis of religious declarations of different groups and the questionnaire survey. Neopagan texts put emphasis on the individual development made by members of groups, according to their own Slavic character. The role of self-sacrifice of individual is minimized. The questionnaire survey is showing that neopagans are rejecting the need of salvation. They understand salvation as the Christian idea, alien to the neopaganism. Subjects put emphasis on achieving the freedom by the individual member. For them most important goal of life is freedom and the independence.

Charismatic Leaders
Opis:
In the new religious movements created in Africa at the beginning of the 20th century, one can distinguish three types of leaders: a chief, a prophet, and a messiah. The type of a chief occurs mainly in communities formed following the secession from the missionary Churches. The type of a prophet appears in the communities dominated by the native components. The idea of a messiah and messianism comes from the Bible. The leaders have a decisive influence on the community, they give character, profile and cohesion to their group. Samuel B. Oschoffa, the founder of "The Celestial Church of Christ" is an example of this kind of leader. He got a vision and that vision changed him and inspired him to establish a new Church in Porto Novo in Benin. In short time this Church became popular, grew very rapidly and spread to Nigeria and other African countries and later on to Europe. There were many factors that made this Church so lively. The most important was its charismatic leader. Another factor was the stress put on the community. People, who felt lonely, lost, confused, disappointed with the missionary Church run to this new Church. There they found the sense of belonging, protection and security. Their services were very attractive because of lively singing, drumming and dancing, speaking in tongues. Prophet Oschoffa was in fact a great leader for the people who experienced humiliation, disappointments. He is an example of new generation of charismatic leaders in the period of fast growth of many communities or Churches in Africa and in other parts of the world.

Opis:
This paper constitutes an analysis of urban movements, marked in the research as alternative groups and civil organisations, in terms of the new politics characteristic of new social movements. In particular it indicates that these movements, ostensibly urban, actually express demands towards the broader social system, delegitimating it in a twofold manner.  Firstly, the acceptance of certain general principles in democratic values and rules is coupled with criticism of how the system functions in practice and of the political elites in Poland, via protest, lobbying, and watchdog activities. A separate type of delegitimation embraces organisations among which we may list cooperatives and squats, as well as organisations managing concrete spaces and withdrawing from participation in public life, shutting themselves away within autonomous spaces and realising a different cultural and democratic model. In both of these groups we are thus dealing with a strongly accentuated anti-systemic and anti-capitalist attitude towards the political reality of the period of transformation in Poland. The research delivered confirmation of the overall research hypothesis adopted in the Lifewhat project, according to which in response to economic crisis civil society responds with the emergence of alternative forms of resilience, not only alleviating the consequences of the crisis but which also, as time passes and the scale of their activities increases, may give rise to a new quality – including in a political sense. The research constitutes a part of the international Lifewhat project. It was conducted on a sample of eighteen purposefully selected civil groups and organisations operating in large cities in Poland, using the method of in-depth interviews.

The article is an attempt to describe civilizational changes taking place in the world in the context of the increasing role of the Internet, new media and postmodernism. According to the thesis of Manuel Castells and Ulrich Beck many of the existing con-cepts typical for the period of modernization must be redefined, characterized by the dominance of the mass media. In this context, it refers to the new meanings of such terms as state government or the opposition, which gained globalized importance, as the cos-mopolitan state referred to by the U. Beck.

‘Guru’ devotion in India: Socio-cultural perspectives and current trendsThough the academic study of religion is considered nascent in India, eminent scholars speak of Hindu restoration and the evolution of a guru. In a highly dynamic and pluralistic India, various sociological perspectives stand valid even today, for a better understanding into the spurt of the new movements – religious, spiritual and charismatic. These offer several insights into the evolution of the ‘guru phenomenon’ in the country. We have come a long way from the traditional guru to the contemporary godman (godwoman). The ‘Guru’ in India has today entered the realm of religion. Despite having access to a wide pantheon of divine entities, what makes a people of a nation in current civilized and better literate times, cut across all barriers of caste and religion (also class) and surrender one’s all to that one ultimate authority called a ‘guru’? What makes him ‘god’? This paper attempts to comprehend, appreciate and study the evolution and progression of the ‘guru’ tradition in India - with an understanding of some sociological perspectives, the need for a ‘Guru’, role in Indian society, related psychoanalysis, and finally current trends. As we do so, this would only be the beginning of a journey in discovering the numerous traditions and movements that come to be associated with this phenomenon, each enshrined with its own trends, plentiful stories and abundant miracles – taking it to a new level, altogether. Zjawisko guru w Indiach. Perspektywy społeczno-kulturowe i aktualne kierunkiChociaż akademickie studia nad religią nadal postrzegane są w Indiach jako nowość, to wybitni uczeni mówią o hinduskim odnowieniu i ewolucji „guru”. W dynamicznych i pluralistycznych Indiach wciąż pojawiają się różnorodne koncepcje socjologiczne mające pomóc w lepszym zrozumieniu wzrostu liczby nowych ruchów religijnych, duchowych i charyzmatycznych.

The paper deals with actual problem of current stage of religious sphere’s development – the emergence and vigorous activity of movements and organizations that can be characterized as quasi-religious. We research the characteristics of quasi-religions as the separate phenomena that operate mainly in the form of secular organizations and that try to transform the identity of its members in their desired direction. It is emphasized that the concepts of quasi-religious and pseudo-religious beliefs are not identical and require of separate religious studies research. But it can be considered that common to both phenomena is only their arising at the boundaries between sacred and secular. The paper presents a review of quasi-religious concepts – from Tillich to Greil, as well as a description of quasi-religious practices and quasi-religious movements.

The use of audiovisual recording devices is changing the practice of qualitative research. Extensive corpus of data can be generated in (shortterm) focussed fieldwork. Nevertheless, methods to analyse video data are still in an experimental stage. This article explores the benefits and limitations of applying sociolinguistic genre analysis to audio-visual data. This is illustrated with a case study, based on the videotaped »deep-trance vision« of a New Religious Movement’s spiritual leader, which is one the most famous contemporary religious visionaries in Germany. The analysis aims to reconstruct the construction of this religious experience of transcendence from the perspective of its followers. We will examine three different levels of communication (a) the inner context, exploring the textual, gestural, mimical and prosodic aspects, (b) the intermediate level where the focus lies on the setting and decorum, and finally (c) the outer context, focussing on the social embedding of this form of »transcendent« communication and its filmic presentation. The article closes with a reflection on the need to combine hermeneutic analysis of case studies based on textual analysis with ethnographic field data and observation to contextualise its interpretation.

Social movements, along with political parties play a significant role in socio-political life of contemporary democracies. As distinct from political parties, they do not pretend to take part in the direct exercise of power (though many of them do demand to be included into the decision-making process), but realizing their specific aims and functions, they exert considerable influence on the political process. Existence in a given country of wide range of social movements, struggling for their own interests is widely considered an indicator of a strong civil society. But how do social movements pursue their goals in countries with underdeveloped institutes of civil society? Does the intervention of new ICTs have certain emancipatory potential, which could be used by social movements to facilitate the desired social transformations? Is it possible to speak about the generational change in social movements, meaning new collective actors, using ICTs and Internet, significantly differ from those that can be termed “old” collective actors? In this paper, I analyze the ways in which new ICTs change the scope, ideology and structure of contemporary social movements and illustrate these transformations with the example of peculiar Belarusian movement,-namely, the Tent Camp, emerged as a result of falsification of the presidential elections in March, 2006, on October Square in Minsk.

He analyses the new form of social movements: from the Arab uprisings to the movements in such countries as Iceland, Spain or the USA. These movements differ in many ways but they all created autonomous communication networks connected with the internet and wireless communication. Castells tries to characterize these movements and to create a theoretical model of these movements in the internet age.

The progress of civilization, supported by the development of new technologies, has led to a series of social, economic and political changes. The information society, in its expectations and through access to knowledge, has significantly affected a change in the model of democracy, causing a kind of return to the original forms of communication in citizen-government relations. This has been accompanied by a shift of social and civic activism from the real to the virtual world. In literature, the use of information and communication technologies in the democratic system is named electronic democracy. One of its forms is e-politics, which is implemented at several levels: institutional, system and civil. A good example of the last type are the new social movements that in recent years have had a significant impact on politics. The basic research problem in this paper concerns e-politics from the citizens’ perspective, through the activities of the new social movements, especially of a political nature. The main research goal is therefore to present the role of social networking tools in influencing citizens and their subsequent activities that have triggered changes in the political system. The methods used in the paper are case study and comparative analysis.

The aim of this article is to analyze what values and ideas are crucial to the vision of urban development from the perspective of social urban movements in Poland. Five different values/ ideas were chosen to elaborate: inter-city solidarity, justice, culture instead of economy, sustainable development and participation. The paper tries to explore what these values might mean for urban activists and what are relations between these values and typical values of new social movements. Furthermore, the author hypothesizes that making some values more popular among, both “ordinary” habitants of the polish cities and local/ national government representatives, is one of the cultural consequences of urban movements in Poland. Researchers who aims to observe and understand changes in human consciousness should conduct empirical studies on urban movements, firstly, to verify which values are declared and put by them into practice in daily urban life, and secondly, to find out what priorities urban activists assign to these values. Conclusions and hypotheses in the article were given on the basis of: 1. The secondary data analysis of Urban Movements Congress website and Urban Movements Agreement website; 2. An observation of the actions of urban activists on the national level; 3. Empirical studies conducted by the author in 2011 among participants of the “Social Movement Respect for Lodz” – local activists from Lodz in Poland.

In the context of the contemporary civilizational changes and the cross-roads of modernity and post modernity paradigms, the fluid and unpredictable nature of the post-migrant cultural identities is more visible. The author argues that to understand the mechanism of that specificity requires the evolution of theoretical thought as well as new research methodology on the processes of identity creation, since in comparison with the previous migration waves, the situation of post-migrant generations has significantly changed in the area of politics, ethnicity and group mobilization. The paper shows the most important changes in the domain of ethnicity, creating the background for interpreting ethnic mobilization of post-migrant generations.
