    The paper combines a broad theoretical framework of comparable capitalism with the insights from new economic sociology and new institutional economics to understand and assess mechanisms of China's evolution. During the last three decades China's economic system has undergone a great transformation from communism to some form of state-led capitalism. The evolutionary approach that balanced the interests of economic and political actors led to the gradual introduction of a capitalist institutional framework, but also preserved the immense role of the Communist Party. In the course of the reforms, former direct control over the economy has been replaced by more discretionary measures like corporate governance (which conserved the extensive patronage system), and Party affiliation (which allowed for political penetration of the private sector). Supplying examples of mounting economic waste, I argue that China's present variety of capitalism is hardly an optimal solution, and the further development will strictly depend on state and Party withdrawal from economic control.

    New capitalism in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is a fascinating subject, which, nevertheless, lacks a comprehensive coverage in the academic literature. While there is a bulk of articles and chapters in the edited books dealing with the issue available, no single book aiming at describing and analyzing the phenomenon, which is still very much in the making, was published in English until recently. The position co-authored by Dorothee Bohle and Bela Greskovits is probably the first serious e# ort aiming to fill the void in a satisfactory way. The authors deliver a book summarizing their long-time interest (manifested by a number of papers under their names published before the book went on sale) in the process of market economy emergence in the post-communist Europe.

    W artykule autor stara się uzyskać głębszy wgląd w przyczyny zbliżającej się kumulacji konfliktu międzygeneracyjnego w Polsce. Buduje swoje uwagi przez krytyczne odniesienie do tez zawartych w monografii naukowej na ten temat. Ukazanie się pracy pt. Niewidzialna wojna międzypokoleniowa (red. G. Nowacki, E. Dąbrowska-Prokopowska, Wydawnictwo UwB, 2020) zbiegło się w czasie z masowymi protestami młodzieży na ulicach miast, zwłaszcza kobiet domagających się m.in. szerszego dostępu do aborcji i praw wolnościowych. Stan tzw. wojny kulturowej w katolickiej Polsce ma swoje głębsze źródła, które tkwią głównie w konflikcie wartości między nowym pokoleniem liberalnie nastawionej młodzieży, a tradycyjno-konserwatywną większością społeczeństwa, reprezentowanego przez władze zdominowane przez jedną partię o orientacji prawicowo-autorytarnej. Obecny układ sił charakteryzuje się, oprócz wymiaru demograficznego, silnym wyrazem politycznym. Młodzież ma małe możliwości zarówno artykulacji swoich potrzeb, jak i reprezentacji swoich interesów w systemie władzy w państwie. Sposób rozwiązania konfliktu, formy zażegnania kryzysu będą miały kluczowe znaczenie dla budowy strategii dalszego rozwoju kraju w okresie po ustąpieniu stanu epidemii oraz wyniku kolejnych wyborów.
    The presented here in review article constitutes an attempt to provide a more in-depth view as to causes of the emerging cumulation of the intergenerational conflict that appears to be taking place in Poland. The Autor’s thesis contained within are built through an reference to thesis presented in the monographic work titled “The invisible intergeneration war” (eds. G. Nowacki, E. Dąbrowska-Prokopowska, Publishing House UwB 2020), which was published contemporaneously to the mass protests an social unrests of the young generation, particularly young women, that were demanding a broader access to abortion and respect for their human rights. The so called “state of cultural war” that appears to be taking place in catholic Poland has deeper roots, that are imbedded in the conflict of values that are ascribed to by the younger, more liberal generation, and the majority of older, more traditional and conservative, generations, which is represented by the right-wing, authoritarian government led by one party. Due to the current ruling system the young generation has a very limited opportunities to articulate its points of view and the express and stand for its own interests as population and as equal participants in the state ruling scheme. The way of resolution of what appears to be an unavoidable confrontation and what happened in the aftermath of the crisis will have a significant impact on the future of Poland following the end of the pandemic and the results of the 2023 elections.
