Opis:
This paper gives an overview of the formulation and solution of network equations, with emphasis on the historical development of this area. Networks are mathematical models. The three ingredients of network descriptions are discussed. It is shown how the network equations of one-dimensional multi-port networks can be formulated and solved symbolically. If necessary, the network graph is modified so as to obtain an admittance representation for all kinds of multi-ports. N-dimensional networks are defined as graphs with the algebraic structure of N-dimensional vectors. In civil engineering, framed structures in two and three spatial dimensions can be modeled as 3-dimensional or 6-dimensional networks. The separation of geometry from topology is a characteristic feature of such networks.

Opis:
Traditionally, sociology has spent much more time exploring relationships between humans, than between humans and other animals. However, this relative neglect is starting to be addressed. For sociologists interested in human identity construction, animals are symbolically important in functioning as a highly complex and ambiguous “other”. Theoretical work analyses the blurring of the human-animal boundary as part of wider social shifts to postmodernity, whilst ethnographic research suggests that human and animal identities are not fixed but are constructed through interaction. After reviewing this literature, the second half of the paper concentrates on animals in science and shows how here too, animals (rodents and primates in particular) are symbolically ambiguous. In the laboratory, as in society, humans and animals have unstable identities. New genetic and computer technologies have attracted much sociological attention, and disagreements remain about the extent to which humananimal boundaries are fundamentally challenged. The value of sociologists’ own categories has also been challenged, by those who argue that social scientists still persist in ignoring the experiences of animals themselves. This opens up notoriously difficult questions about animal agency. The paper has two main aims: First, to draw links between debates about animals in society and animals in science; and second, to highlight the ways in which sociologists interested in animals may benefit from approaches in Science and Technology Studies (STS).

We describe in this paper the combination of soft computing techniques and fractal theory for achieving intelligent manufacturing. Soft computing techniques can be used to develop hybrid intelligent systems. Fractal theory can be used to analyze the geometrical complexity of natural and artificial objects. The careful combination of soft computing and fractal theory can provide us with a good mix of intelligent techniques and fractal mathematical tools, which can help in achieving automation of manufacturing processes. We consider in this paper several manufacturing and automation problems that are efficiently solved with the proposed approach.

Opis:
In this paper a methodology of assessment and optimization of groundwater quality monitoring network which takes into account the evaluation criteria derived from the Shannon information theory is presented. The fundamental criteria derived from this theory are: (1) the value of marginal information entropy, which is a measure of the amount of information containing in the data in a location of sampling point, and (2) the value of transinformation (mutual information) which measures the amount of information shared between each of two sampling points. Transinformation can be interpreted as an index of the stochastic dependence between the random variables corresponding to groundwater quality data recorded in different sampling points of monitoring network and shows the reduction of uncertainty included in one variable due to the knowledge of the other variable. In the optimization problem the objective function involving the value of transinformation of the investigated water quality parameters (Cl, Cu, Na) is minimized. To minimize the objective function the simulated annealing algorithm, which allows to find a satisfactory sub-optimal solution, was used. The proposed methodology was applied to optimize the groundwater monitoring network of contaminant reservoir Żelazny Most, one of the worlds biggest industrial waste disposal site, which collects post-flotation contaminants originating from copper ore treatment. The results show an increase in the effectiveness of the monitoring network by reducing the number of sampling points while maintaining an acceptable amount of information available in the network.

This communication tries to shape and to ground the idea that Rural Studies and Rural Sociology have a particularly promising job to do in re-assembling the Social, the Natural and the Technical within the treadmill of sustainable development. It is argued that the cross-fertilization of the ecological modernization movement and Social Studies of Science and Technology (particularly Actor- Network-Theory) is giving the opportunity to establish a perspective that might enlighten and accompany the processes of making agricultural sciences and technology more ecological. But this requires specific conditions and ways of doing social studies in situations that include those processes.

The Game of Life (Life) is one of the most famous cellular automata. The main purpose of this article is to present a network representation of Life as an application of the approach proposed in our previous papers. This network representation has made it possible to investigate Life using a network theory. Some well-known Life patterns are illustrated by using the corresponding clustered networks. The visualization of Life’s rest state reveals the underlying tension as a complex network. The typical network parameters show the characteristics of Life as a Wolfram’s class IV rule. In particular, the in-degree distribution of the derived network from a Life’s rest state shows a scale-free nature, which could be related to the evidence of self-organized criticality.

The problem of determining an optimal training schedule for locally recurrent neural network is discussed. Specifically, the proper choice of the most informative measurement data guaranteeing the reliable prediction of neural network response is considered. Based on a scalar measure of performance defined on the Fisher information matrix related to the network parameters, the problem was formulated in terms of optimal experimental design. Then, its solution can be readily achieved via adaptation of effective numerical algorithms based on the convex optimization theory. Finally, some illustrative experiments are provided to verify the presented approach.

Several aspects of the TCP/AQM system design are discussed that may affect performance of the network. Namely, due to decentralized structure of the network traffic flow control system in which traffic rate control tasks are delegated to autonomous agents, it may be possible for the agents to profitably re-engineer the TCP congestion control algorithm at the cost of the overall performance of the network. In this paper it is shown how the commonly applied TCP/AQM design procedures may give rise to mechanisms that are prone to attacks discreetly moving the network traffic flow away from the desired operating point. Furthermore, a short discussion is presented concerning the countermeasures that can be taken to reduce these effects.

Opis:
There are different forms by which the state bureaucracy relates to social movements in the realm of agrarian reform policies in Brazil. A number of possible connections and very complex relations have been taking shape over the last 30 years. Possible connections include institutional spaces for discussion, but also a number of informal relations between bureaucrats and social movement mediators. I would argue that the literature on participatory democracy is not the best approach to analyze this wide-ranging scope of connections, inasmuch as it assumes the existence of two different and separate actors - the state and the civil society – and usually considers the state as a monolithic actor while focusing on civil society. In fact, the diversity of formats by which social movements relate to state bureaucracy can be apprehended more fully by the actor-network approach, as this gives the researcher tools to account for connections taking place in different sites and in a multiplicity of formats, as well as to analyze their effects on actors’ agency during the political process. Data that supports this argument is drawn from ethnographical research within the Brazilian state institution in charge of implementing agrarian reform policies, INCRA (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform). By focusing on how the bureaucracy understands and reacts to one of the most organized and mobilized beneficiary publics in the Brazilian political arena, this investigation presents some interesting findings regarding the complexity of networks in which bureaucrats are entangled and their effects on the negotiation and implementati of policies claimed by rural social movements. In what follows I discuss some of these findings in light of participatory democracy and theoretical actor-network contributions
i ruchów społecznych. Dane potwierdzające ten argument pochodzą z etnograficznych badań w Brazylijskich instytucjach państwowych, które wprowadzają reformę rolną, INCRA (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform).

Network coding is a new technique in the field of information theory and coding theory. This emerging technique offers great benefits in the communication networks such as increased throughput and energy savings. In this paper, we evaluate network coding for video transmission scenarios. In these scenarios, the source nodes encode the video packets, while the intermediate nodes implement network coding before forwarding the encoded packets to the end nodes. Finally, the end nodes decode the received packets in order to recovery the original video. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is used as the video compression standard in this work. We have used the network simulator (NS-2) for our simulations. Our results show that network coding improves the system throughput, reduces the packet loss and improves the video quality in the end nodes.

The main aim of the article is to propose a new version of sociology of literature under the name of ANT-ology of literature. In the first part of the text I sketch a map of modern controversies on status and situation of literature and literary studies in contemporary world. I underline the fact that descriptions of this situation proposed by literary and academic establishment is always critical and that in fact this diagnosis are presented from conservative point of view. Afterward I discuss classical approaches of sociology of literature starting in 19th century till present-day and cultural sociology of literature connected with cultural turn in humanities and social sciences. However, I underline that all those approaches are anthropo- and textocentric. Hence, the crucial is the last part of the article. I argue on the necessity of application of Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory into the literary studies and I describe possible advantages of ANT-ology of literature. If we take seriously into consideration the ideas of human and nonhuman actors, collective instead of society, abandon the “context”, focus on empiric and case studies, and if we will follow the actors, etc., presented version of literary studies will be entirely different – redefined and renewed.

Opis:
Article is a trying to merge two theories: actor-network theory (ANT) and world-system analysis (WSA). Such a synthesis gives us an opportunity to combine an ethnographic approach, focused on actors analysis of ANT, with a networked, global perspective proposed by WSA. Both theories share the same type of holistic/ecological ontology of human societies. This similarity is fully visible if we compare a notion of the collective (Latour) and a notion of world-system (WSA). This is challenge to traditional, modernist views of social ontology. Author propose a concept of “ontological imagination”, as a solution. This is proposition a radicalized version of “sociological imagination (C. W. Mills), more suitable to technoscientific societies. In the paper the theoretical considerations are supplemented by a case study about “tyranny of the moment” as an example of acceleration in contemporary culture. Article propose model of social time in global context. Time is treated as a very important factor in global inequalities within structures if modern world-system.
