    Opis:
    The analyzed inscriptions in the eastern Lublin region enable reconstruction of selected essential aspects of the worldly life of the deceased. On the basis of gravestone inscriptions in the Orthodox cementeries in the Lublin region the author tries to reconstruct the ways of perceiving life and death, reflected in the inscriptions. Many inscriptions reflect Christian beliefs about eternal life and resurrection; they describe death as a stage of waiting for as sleeping, rest, and as silence.

    Opis:
    The article presents the conclusions of the study of gravestone inscriptions (3644) carried out on two Roman Catholic cemeteries in the Świętokrzyskie province. The collected material dates back to the 1720s, giving an opportunity to observe socio-historical changes, and to answer the question of how, in the optional elements of the gravestone, the community’s value system is reflected. In addition, what information about the inscription was conveyed the gravestone, how its functions function as a gravestone and what is the origin of the inscription.

    Przełomowa rola Zgromadzenia Księży Misjonarzy w procesie kształtowania przestrzeni sepulkralnej Warszawy była powszechnie znana i doceniana. Mimo niepodważalnych zasług na tym polu oraz licznych opracowań poświęconych nekropoliom warszawskim jak i temu zgromadzeniu, temat ten nie doczekał się wnikliwej monografii historycznej uwzględniającej ustalenie rzeczywistego czasu, w którym przenoszenie cmentarzy za miasto się rozpoczęło oraz poznania przyczyn tych działań. Niniejszy artykuł ma za zadanie wykazać, że w badaniach nad kształtowaniem się cmentarzy pozamiejskich przyjmowano długo założenie, iż najpierw pojawiły się regulacje prawne, nakazujące ich tworzenie, a dopiero później (i z dużymi oporami) doszło do ich realizacji. Nowsze studia pokazują jednak, że w XVI, XVII i XVIII wieku organizowano jednak miejsca pochówków poza osadami bez żadnych ścisłych nakazów. Czyniono to z konieczności, wynikającej z przepełnienia podziemi świątyń i cmentarzy przykościelnych. Warszawa, postrzegana powszechnie w XVII wieku jako wielkie miasto, również realizowała ten zwyczaj przede wszystkim za sprawą misjonarzy, którzy stosunkowo wcześnie, a zarazem konsekwentnie, wprowadzili w niej nowy sposób sytuowania cmentarzy.
    A breakthrough role of the Congregation of the Mission in the proces of shaping sepulchral space in Warsaw is well-known and commonly appreciated. In spite of Vincentians’ indisputable merits in that field as well as many papers devoted to Warsaw necropolis as well as to this congregation, this topic has not been tackled in a thorough historical monograph. Such a lengthy paper would have to take account of the real time in which moving cemeteries away from the cities began and explain its causes. It has been shown in this article that in research on extra-urban cemeteries an assumption had been made for a long time that at first some legal rules ordering their creation were enacted. Only later (despite no small resistance) did it come to implementing these rules. However, new studies show that in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries burial sites were organized without any strict obligations to bury the deceased outside of the settlements. It was done out of necessity which derived from overfilling of temple undergrounds and cemeteries located next to churches. Warsaw which was considered a huge city in the 17th century followed this pattern thanks to the Vincentians who introduced a new manner of locating cemeteries both early and consistently.

    In this article I would like to share with my readers a bit of excitement which accompanied me in my trip through space and time – the trip to the biggest and almost totally forgotten battle of the First World War. The outbreak of the First World War is very well described and as a historical fact does not require at the moment any wider description. However, it may remain unknown that the armies of the occupant states included not only the nationals of the given states but also the natives who lived on those territories. This mechanism caused a mass conscription of Poles who were later sent to the fronts to fight against other armies which often included many other Poles. Historians assess that out of all the soldiers taking part in the Łódź Operation (about seven hundred thousand soldiers of whom two hundred thousand died during three weeks of the Łódź Operation) at least 20% were Poles. This truth is being discovered now due to 170 graveyards and cemetery objects scattered around Łódź where the fights took place.

    Opis:
    The paper presents selected issues in the area of Polish biographical lexicography from the genological perspective. The author proposes to distinguish a new type – obituary and commemorative lexicography. She states that no monographic work on biographical lexicography has been published within the Polish scholarly society. The existing publications are only in the form of thematic/problem and review articles. The second part of the paper contains a list of 379 Polish dictionaries; the bibliography covers the years 1832–2021. The data presented are considered statistically important. The bibliographic list includes various types/forms of dictionaries – strictly biographical dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, dictionary-encyclopedias, encyclopedic guides, reference books (e.g. Who is who?), directories of people (e.g. The Book of Siberians), personal loss books, cemetery books, lists of people, alphabetical lists of people, lists of surnames, nicknames, registers of the dead, deported and others, indexes of people (e.g. of repressed people) and others, inventories (e.g. names of labor camps), etc. Formally, publications of this type meet the requirements of studies in the field of lexicography because: 1/ they constitute a linearly ordered set (by lexicographic order), and 2/ they are specific databases storing specific information.
