    Opis:
    Lay epistemic theory is one of the most popular theoretical frameworks describing the knowledge formation process. According to it, the central variable determining the epistemic process is the need for cognitive closure. In most cases, high levels of this motivation are associated with simplified and accelerated processing of information. This can lead to an overly simplified understanding of this variable. In fact, there are reasons to believe that the typical relationship is reversed under certain circumstances. The paper is a review of the research supporting this prediction. Results were analyzed with particular emphasis on two postulates of the theory: the two phases of the epistemic process and the dual nature of the need for cognitive closure.

    Mass participation in the attractions of the globalised world necessarily entails certain trends. One of them leads to the concentration of societies around large metropolitan areas, which forces the public administration, especially local government, to adopt pioneering steps. In the information society, the risk society undergoing the processes of metropolitanisation, the fulfilment of thesocial demand for comprehensive risk minimalisation requires the constant modernisation of the mentality of the public administration. Otherwise archaic governmental activity will lead to the depreciation of the area which it administrates.
    Aby uczestniczyć w atrakcyjnym dla mas zglobalizowanym świecie, należy podążać za pewnymi trendami. Jeden z nich prowadzi do koncentrowania się społeczeństw wokół wielkich obszarów metropolitalnych, co wymusza na administracji publicznej, szczególnie samorządowej, poczynienie pionierskich kroków. W warunkach społeczeństwa informacyjnego, społeczeństwa ryzyka ulegającego procesom metropolitalnym spełnienie społecznej potrzeby kompleksowego minimalizowania ryzyka wymaga nieustannej mentalnej modernizacji administracji publicznej. Inaczej archaiczna działalność władz doprowadzi do deprecjacji obszaru, którym one administrują.

    The paper reported two correlational studies. The aim of the Study 1 was to examine the hypothesis that age moderates the relationship between need for closure (NFC) and cognitive structuring. Results of the study revealed that aging with increased need for closure was associated with better recognition of irrelevant information than schema-relevant items, in testing hypotheses about the target person. These findings are interpreted as demonstrating the age-associated failure of cognitive abilities (i.e., low efficacy at fulfilling the need for closure), reducing tendency to behave according to the level of epistemic motivation. The results of Study 2 demonstrated that older participants are characterized by higher NFC but by lower EFNC than young participants. These results are consistent with the conclusion that the negative relationships between NFC and cognitive structuring demonstrated by the older participants in Study 1 can be attributed to their lower level of EFNC.

    Opis:
    Recent development of medicine allows early intervention during pregnancy or just after delivery in many types of detected congenital malformations. Frequently these tests are followed by significant psychological problems of parents experiencing the unfavourable diagnosis. They have to face a necessity of making a dramatic decision to continue their pregnancy and prepare themselves to living with a handicapped child or to terminate. The aim of conducted research was to recognize experiences, ways of coping and subjectively perceived support of women (21, at the average age of 27), who were found out to be expecting a child with congenital malformation. The pregnant patients, from different medical centres in Poland, were referred to the Department for Diagnosis and Prevention of Congenital Malformations at the Research Institute Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital in Ło´ dz´ for the final diagnosis and to have further medical treatment planned. The applied research methods were: psychological conversation and the questionnaire prepared especially for that purpose. The main aim of research is to find principles of psychological intervention and the role of psychologist in the multidisciplinary medical team taking care of pregnant woman and child with congenital malformation.
