Opis:
The assemblage of lacustrine ostracods found in the Eemian Interglacial sediments at Kruklanki (Masurian Lake Dis- s q trict, northeastern Poland) contains 18 species belonging to 13 genera. The most dominant species are Candona neglecta Sars, 1887, Limnocytherina sanctipatricii (Brady et Robertson, 1869), Limnocythere inopinala (Baird, 1843) and Candona candida (O.F. Muller, 1776). Cyclocypris serena (Koch, 1838), llyocypris decipiens Masi, 1905, Pseudocandona insculpta (G.W. Muller, 1900) and Leucocythere mirabilis Kaufmann, 1892 are recorded for the first time from the Eemian of Poland; the latter two species are also new for the Eemian lacustrine deposits of Europe. The ecological requirements of the recognised ostracod species as well as their geographic ranges in the Quaternary of Europe are summarised. Based on these data, past habitat type is estimated as a deeper littoral of a lake with reasonably cold, well-oxygenated and calcium-rich waters. The present state of knowledge of the Eemian ostracods from Poland is reviewed and their comparison with the Eemian ostracod assemblages from Europe is briefly given. Comparison of the ostracod fauna! assemblage from Kruklanki with those from other Eemian sites in Poland enables to establish and describe one general type of ostracod assemblages characteristic for lacustrine littoral in this interglacial.

Opis:
The palaeogeographical reconstruction of the deglaciation process in NE Poland during the Odranian Glaciation Wartanian Stadial (Saale MIS 6) is based mainly on the analysis of glacial morpholineaments, performed using the GIS programs that provide us with better understanding of the glacial landscape evolution, spatial reconstruction of glacial processes, and postglacial landscape development. Analysis of postglacial morpholineaments was carried out based on the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) as well as geological, geomorphological and topographic maps. It resulted in the delimitation of visible linear postglacial landforms, their identification and classification, and the determination of their genetic and chronological relations. Directions of the lineaments were determined through quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis was applied to determine the spatial and temporal sequence of events, directions of ice movement and its range. Two glacial lobes, Biebrza and Neman, existed in the north-western part of the Białystok Plateau and Sokółka Hills during the last glacial advance. The lobed nature of the ice sheet can be confirmed by field data collected from, e.g., sites in Knyszewicze, and by topographic analysis of Quaternary sediments, combined with their thickness and genesis. The obtained reconstruction of the last glacial advance and retreat in the study area can be used in further regional discussions on the character and dynamics of the last glaciation in this region.

Lacustrine chalk is very common in post-glacial lakes of northern Poland. In the deposit of Lake Kruk lin (NE Poland) carbonates occur as a layer 2-3 m thick. Samples for laboratory studies were collected from three profiles in SW part of the deposit. Mineral composition of the sediments was determined using differential thermal analysis (DT A) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), while the age was determined on the basis of pollen analysis. The sediment profiles represent an age of early Holocene. Calcite is the major component of lacustrine chalk. It forms small crystals (

Lake Wigry is one of the best explored lakes in Poland, a feat which has been achieved thanks to the passion and efforts of numerous scientists. This tremendous endeavour was supervised and coordinated by Professor Jacek Rutkowski and January 2021 marked the fifth anniversary of the professor’s death. To mark this occasion, a history of research on the lake was compiled on the basis of oral accounts and an overview of the works that have been created thanks to his ideas, supervision, and boundless empathy. It is crucial to continue the research, since it will allow for the even better protection of the environment, as well as the natural and landscape attributes of the Wigry region.

Since the mid-1950s, when Jerzy Znosko started his huge contribution to the recognition of the crystalline basement of NE Poland, many different studies have followed the planned and implemented drilling projects. The drillings, conducted in the first decade under the leadership of Professor Znosko and under his description of the results, were further worked out by other researchers. Studies concerned petrological, geochemical and miner- alogical aspects. In that fan of methods applied, geochronological data started to be introduced to the bibliography of the area in the early 1960s. Geochronological methods that time mean mostly K-Ar and some Rb-Sr values. These materials are gathered in the paper aiming at its presentation, re-valuation and interpretation in terms of the significance of such data for further development of knowledge.

Opis:
The lacustrine-boggy-fluvial sequence at Komorniki, NE Poland was subject to complex (geological, palynological, diatomological and malacological) investigations. These sediments occur between the Narevian and Nidanian glaciations tills and belong to the Augustovian Interglacial of Poland correlated with the Cromerian 1 Interglacial of the Netherlands. Two cold stages of a glacial rank and one warm stage of interglacial rank (with dominant pollen of Quercus, Ulmus, Carpinus, Alnus, Tilia and Corylus in sediments corresponding to the climatic optimum) have been distinguished in the pollen succession. The latter is similar to that known from the Augustovian Interglacial profiles at Szczebra, Kalejty and Czarnucha. Diatom succession from the Komorniki section includes certain unidentified, apparently new small species of Stephanodiscus, Staurosirella and Pseudostaurosira side be side with the Pleistocene extinct taxon of Stephanodiscus niagarae var. insuetus and a relatively widespread species of S. rotula characterizing by some morphological peculiarities. In the composition of the malacofauna the fluvial extinct species of Fagotia wuesti and Sphaerium cf. rivicola are the most important molluscs for the biostratigraphy. Among them, Sphaerium cf. rivicola is known from the late Tiglian in the Netherlands. Fagotia wuesti is characteristic of the Bavel Interglacial in the Netherlands, as well as of the Borntal and Artern interglacials in Germany.

Dr Tadeusz Depciuch (1928–2007), geochemist, mineralogist and economic geologist, longtime employee of the Polish Geological Institute in Warsaw, as the first scientist in Poland who conducted a systematic study on isotopic age of crystalline rocks. In 1966, after preliminary age determinations by Dr Jerzy Borucki, he undertook research of crystalline rocks of the Lower Silesian Block, mainly granites, and subsequently of rocks of the basement of the Polish part of the East European Precambrian Platform penetrated in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as igneous rocks of its cover. He used the K-Ar method, applying its volumetric variety on own-designed equipment. Age determinations allowed identifying the magmatic and metamorphic stages of the development of the crystalline basement evolution, and establishing the stratigraphy. They also played an important role in the research on Variscan plutonism in Lower Silesia. Tadeusz Depciuch participated in prospecting for uranium deposits in the Sudetes, using geochemical methods, and studied the origin of some deposits. In 1974–1984, he worked in Africa (Benin) as a UN expert in the field of geochemistry and economic geology.

Opis:
Z punktu widzenia trwałości betonów obecność w takich kruszywach faz węglanowych (kalcyt, dolomit) i minerałów grupy SiO2 (zwłaszcza chalcedonu i opalu) jest niekorzystna, gdyż sprzyja reaktywności alkalicznej. W pierwszym przypadku wpływa na to m.in. zróżnicowanie strukturalne (zwłaszcza wielkość ziaren kalcytu, wzgl. dolomitu), w drugim zaś zaburzenie struktury faz krzemionkowych i niski stopień jej uporządkowania. Przedmiotem przeprowadzonych badań były naturalne kruszywa żwirowo-piaskowe z wybranych złóż NE Polski zlokalizowanych w województwach podlaskim (Drahle III) i mazowieckim (Rostki-Borowce, Wręcza-Olszówka II, Zbiroża V i Rudno). Skład ten uzupełniają okruchy piaskowców (13,4 ± 4,1% mas.) i – występujące w podrzędnej ilości (średnio 2% mas.) – najbardziej szkodliwe z punktu widzenia trwałości betonu fragmenty skał krzemionkowych (głównie krzemieni).
Natural mineral aggregates, both sand&gravel as well as crushed, are used in the concrete production. The content of mineral aggregates in concrete, being one of the most important way of use them, repeatedly is higher than 70 vol.%. In that respect, the characteristics of aggregates petrographic composition has become – especially recently – very significant. It especially concerns natural aggregates which are a mixture of clastic material of generally diverse petrographic character. From the concrete durability viewpoint the presence of carbonate phases (calcite, dolomite) and SiO2 group minerals (generally chalcedony and opal) in such aggregates is unfavourable due to alkali reactivity. In the first case it is caused, among others, by the structural differentiation (mainly size of calcite and dolomite grains), in the second – by disorder of the structure of silica phases and low degree of its arrangement. Natural gravel and sand aggregates from some deposits of NE Poland, localized in Podlasie (Drahle III) and Mazowsze (Rostki-Borowce, Wręcza-Olszówka III, Zbiroża and Rudno) Voivodeship, were the objects of the study. The quantitative petrographic analysis – performed on the representative 8-16 mm fraction – indicated that the presence of pieces of carbonate rocks (mainly limestones) and crystalline rocks (both igneous as well as metamorphic) is the most frequent. It equals to 47,0 ± 6,3 wt.% and 37,4 ± 6,8 wt.%, respectively. The composition is supplemented by sandstones fragments (13,4 ± 4,1 wt.%) and – in secondary quantity (in average 2 wt.%) – by siliceous rocks (mainly cherts). The latter are the most detrimental from the viewpoint of concrete durability.

Analysis of the orientation of both positive and negative glacial morpholineaments (crevasse landforms) was performed on the areas coveredby 12 selectedmap sheets of the Detailed Geological Map of Poland, scale 1:50 000, situated in NE Poland. Axes of these landforms formanet composed of four conjugate sets. This isaclassicaljointnet developeddue to horizontal stress, and composed of an orthogonal (extensional) system consisting of longitudinal and transversal sets, and a rhomboidal (shear) system consisting of two diagonal sets. Based on the orientation of glacial morpholineaments, inherited after the originaljoint net in the ice body, ice sheet advance directions - averaged for the area - were determined. This method of reconstructing ice flow direction creates new possibilities of making synthetic regional analyses, in particular in terms of Pleistocene palaeogeographic investigations. The best potential for the method’suse lies in areas of young post-glacial relief. In the region of NE Poland analyzed, these investigations enabled determination of different directions of ice flow within the Mazurian, Warmian and Vistulian ice sheet lobes of the last glaciation. Local changes in ice sheet movement directions were identified, and these reflected basement elevations (e.g. the Wiżajny Elevation). In other cases, basement irregularities influenced the opening of separate crevasse sets (e.g. outside of the Góra Dylewska massif) giving rise to a dominance of individual directions (sets) in the morpholineament orientation. This method can also be used in geological mapping.

Well developed NE-SW trending corridors of outwash in NE Poland are associated with a series of lakes with a similar direction of elongation. The glaciofluvial corridor under study consists of parallel ridges with associated channels and kames. The deposits are flanked by till and hummocky terrain. The gravel ridges are composed of sand and gravel deposits that are cross-stratified, massive or graded, and that contain cut-and-fill structures and large intra-clasts of sand and gravel. Locally the deposits show normal faults. The succession of one of the ridges is interpreted to reflect the infilling of a braided channel in a crevasse. Sedimentation took place in some phases when the ice-sheet regime changed from active to stagnant. Sandy-gravel ridges occur within this complex perpendicular to the Weichselian icesheet margin. The corridor is interpreted as an interlobate area in the zone between the Warmia and Mazury ice lobes. The braided-channel deposits are not comparable to typical Polish sandurs. The lithofacies characteristics show higher energy conditions, and the channels are deeper than those typical of Pleistocene lowland sandurs. The sand and gravel ridges are interpreted as interlobate eskers.

Three mafic-alkaline intrusive bodies in NE Poland: Ełk, Pisz and Tajno, have been dated recently with U-Pb SHRIMP method. An earlier Rb-Sr whole rock isochron of Ełk syenites pointed to an age 355š4 Ma, while K-Ar age estimates suggested a Late Paleozoic age of Pisz and Tajno rocks, however, in a wide range between 349-291 Ma and 327-289 Ma, respectively. In the paper, we present new geochronological results and discuss the problem of the closure temperatures for different minerals and different isotopic systems used in previous age determinations. Much of the early dating works has been done using K-Ar method. Biotite and K-feldspar retain radiogenic Ar quantitatively below 280 -200şC. Only if magmatic bodies cooled quickly and remained unmetamorphosed, K-Ar and Rb-Sr ages estimate accurately the intrusion emplacement. Zircon used for U-Pb datings has a closure temperature over 800şC, that is comparable to the temperature of magma’s solidus. Therefore U-Pb magmatic zircons dates could be interpreted as an intrusion emplacement ages. The obtained U-Pb results of 347.7 š8 Ma (Ełk) and 345.5š5 Ma (Pisz) have shown very consistent Early Carboniferous age of platform mafic-alkaline magmatic activity. This new U-Pb SHRIMP dating indicates that Ełk and Pisz intrusions are coeval and together with the Tajno alkaline-carbonatite massif could be affined with the Late Devonian Kola Alkaline Carbonatite Province (KACP).

Pollen, phytoplankton and microfauna from the Palaeogene and Neogene of two boreholes in NE Poland have been studied. Borehole Klucznik 1 is located in the Warmia area, and borehole Sąpłaty 3 borehole in the Mazury area. The oldest palynomorph assemblage comes from the Klucznik sediments; it consists of phytoplankton from the Early Palaeocene (Danian) D1 and D2 dinocyst zone, and from the Selandian D3 zone. The Eocene is present in the both the Klucznik and the Sąpłaty successions. The Middle Eocene assemblage has been dated as late Bartonian and belongs to the D11 dinocyst zone. The Late Eocene (Priabonian) D12 dinocyst zone is also present in both boreholes. Sporomorphs of a Late Eocene palynomorph assemblage point on the proximity of land and on terrestrial vegetation. The dinocyst zone D13, characteristic for the earliest Oligocene (‘Latdorfian’) has been found in both profiles as well. A Neogene sporomorph assemblage dating from the Middle Miocene (Early Serravallian) occurs only in the Sąpłaty profile. This sporomorph assemblage is correlated with pollen zone VIII. Pollen zone IX is present in the uppermost part of the Middle Miocene (Middle Serravallian). Late Miocene deposits (Late Tortonian) with pollen zone XI are present, too. The Miocene deposits accumulated in densely vegetated swamps, resulting now in the occurrence of lignite. The sedimentary conditions in the Warmia and Mazury regions were identical during the Neogene and Palaeogene, implying that both provinces belonged at the time to one sedimentary basin.
