Opis:
Monitoring of biological and chemical pollutants in large bodies of water requires the acquisition of a large number of in-situ measurements by a mobile sensor platform. Critical to this problem is an efficient path planning method, easily adaptable to different control strategies that ensure the collection of data of the greatest value. This paper proposes a deliberative path planning algorithm, which features the use of waypoints for a ship navigation trajectory that are generated by Genetic Algorithm (GA) based procedures. The global search abilities of Genetic Algorithms are combined with the heuristic local search in order to implement a navigation behaviour suitable to the required data collection strategy. The adaptive search system operates on multi-layer maps generated from remote sensing data, and provides the capacity for dealing with multiple classes of water pollutants. A suitable objective function was proposed to handle different sampling strategies for the collection of samples from multiple water pollutant classes. A region-of-interest (ROI) component was introduced to deal effectively with the large scale of search environments by pushing the search towards ROI zones. This resulted in the reduction of the search time and the computing cost, as well as good convergence to an optimal solution. The global path planning performance was further improved by multipoint crossover operators running in each GA generation. The system was developed and tested for inland water monitoring and trajectory planning of a mobile sample acquisition platform using commercially available satellite data.

Opis:
The probabilistic Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) approach is presented to solve the problem of designing an optimal trajectory for a mobile data acquisition platform. An ACO algorithm optimizes an objective function defined in terms of the value of the acquired data samples subject to different sets of constraints depending on the current data acquisition strategy. The analysis presented in this paper focuses on an environment monitoring system, which acquires in-situ data for precise calibration of a water quality monitoring system. The value of the sample is determined based on the concentration of the water pollutant, which in turn is obtained through processing of multi-spectral satellite imagery. Since our problem is defined in a continuous space of coordinates, and in some strategies each point is able to connect to any other point in the space, we adopted a hybrid model that involves a connection graph and also a spatial grid.

Opis:
This paper presents the control designs for an autonomous forklift vehicle that drive the vehicle from an initial configuration to a final one. Three stabilization controls, which are chained-form time-varying control, sigma-transformed discontinuous control, and navigation-variables-based discontinuous control, for a forklift vehicle are compared by simulations. The sigma-transformed and navigation-variables-based discontinuous controls provide fast convergence motions from an initial to a final configuration, while the time-varying-based control provides oscillatory motion and slow convergence. The sigma-transformed discontinuous control has a set of discontinuous points in which, from a practical point of view, the control signals can blow up if a vehicle enters the set. The navigation-variables-based control, which also has a discontinuous point at the final configuration, does not produce blown up control signals since its boundedness nature. Discussion on the implementation of control algorithm is elucidated for the three stabilization controls for the forklift vehicle.

Opis:
Growth prospects for ocean economy are promising because ocean industries are addressing challenges such as food security, energy security and climate change. However, safety and efficiency are the general challenges of ocean operations. Increased automation is believed to solve these problems. This paper discusses the impact of automation on safety and efficiency. A literature review of ‘Human factors’ mainly from the aviation and maritime industries is presented to untangle the human-machine relationship characteristics when increased automation is introduced to operators. A literature review of Hydrodynamics, Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) technologies is presented to introduce the state-of-art and associated limitations. It is concluded that, if the industry’s drive is safety and efficiency, then full-autonomy is, at present, not the way to go. Remote control, instead, could facilitate a feasible future, while focused research and development are in need.

Situation awareness is the key element of the decision-making process. In navigation safety domain, monitoring, control, assessment of dangerous situations, support of operators of decision-making support system should be implemented in real time. In this paper we present the problem of situation awareness applied to navigation safety control. The paper considers existing models of situation awareness and ontology-based approach for maritime situation awareness. We introduce the situation concept using infons. Finally, we give an example how use these methods for design and creation of decision-support system for navigation safety control.

Due to significant advancements in optical navigation technology, optical mouse sensors (OMS) are increasingly employed as low-cost motion sensora in personal computing and robot navigation. This paper proposes a new test bed to study the long-term measurement characteristics of emerging OMS devices. With the utilization of this set-up, the attributes of a high-resolution OMS (Agilent ADNS-2051) are investigated under various critical operating conditions like changing surface velocity and the pattern. The paper illustrates that despite the problems addressed, the positioning accuracy of an OMS could be quite sufficient for some basic process control apptications.

The paper presents a new approach for solving a path planning problem for ships in the environment with static and dynamic obstacles. The algorithm utilizes a heuristic method, classified to the group of Swarm Intelligence approaches, called the Ant Colony Optimization. The method is inspired by a collective behaviour of ant colonies. A group of agents - artificial ants searches through the solution space in order to find a safe, optimal trajectory for a ship. The problem is considered as a multi-criteria optimization task. The criteria taken into account during problem solving are: path safety, path length, the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) compliance and path smoothness. The paper includes the description of the new multi-criteria ACO-based algorithm along with the presentation and discussion of simulation tests results.

The paper presents basic remarks about construction of fault tolerant control and navigation systems for UAV. Reliability and safety requirements can be fulfill with usage of redundancies. Presentation of different kinds of avionic redundancies with comments about their usage during fault appearance is an important part of the paper. The main authors' attention is paid to faults in input devices. Their first goal of UAV measurement devices is generating the information of high quality, but the information must be dependable. On the basis of the authors' work experience, the application of signal estimation with remarks about their precision is introduced. After the general information about the troubleshooting in UAV measurement systems, the usage of a complementary filter for calculations of the roll angle is presented. Moreover, two methods of roll angle estimation are given with comments. The comparison of two methods of navigation parameter calculation as the diagnostic method application is also described. The considered applications have specific feature of UAV avionics systems in the presence of faults.

Aim of publication is to introduce reader with general need and current situation of development of air traffic management systems and evaluation of actual operating network of aviation electronic support systems. The theme of the contribution is actual because there is currently an increase in the volume of the air traffic, which places increased demands on the safety level of air transport. Attempting to find new answers related to insufficient navigation systems has led aviation authorities to develop progressive systems based on cooperation with satellite navigation systems. Solution for capacity limited airports is development of system GBAS – Ground Based Augmentation System. The main purpose of publication is to present drafts of possible rationalization of navigation infrastructure of M.R. Stefanik airport. The effort to use the maximum potential of airspace consisted in the search for new concepts and trends in air traffic management based on the development of the technical pillar and new ways of managing the entire ATM system.

Autonomy and unmanned systems have evolved significantly in recent decades, becoming a key routine component for various sectors and domains as an intrinsic sign of their improvement, the ocean not being an exception. This paper shows the transition from the research concept to the commercial product and related services for Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV). Note that it has not always been easy in most cases due to the limitations of the technology, business, and policy framework. An overview of current trends in USV technology looking for a baseline to understand the sector where some experiences of the authors are shown in this work. The analysis presented shows a multidisciplinary approach to the field. USV's capabilities and applications today include a wide range of operations and services aimed at meeting the specific needs of the maritime sector.
