The subject for reflection in this paper is the translational challenge posed by the rendering of linguistic representations of national stereotypes, based on the example of the flower Edelweiss from the song Edelweiss which became a word-symbol for the inhabitants of the U.S.A. The translation of this stereotype created in the U.S.A., where the symbol of Edelweiss gained an added meaning, means that the translator of the English-German language pair is forced to explain the exo-cultural associations to those receivers who are enculturated in the country of this symbol’s origin.

The article stems from the research conducted in 1963 and aimed at establishing the hierarchy of prestige and attractiveness of Polish cities and towns by means of the poll, in which urban dwellers were asked to choose 4 Polish cities or towns, which they think are worth of recommending to foreign visitors. Studying both the resulted hierarchy and the opinions explaining the choice of particular city or town, the author comes to the conclusion that the assessment of a city's or town's prestige is independent of its administrative role and size. The particular criteria of evaluation suggest that the hierarchy is a phenomenon that emerged after the war. The opinions are largely informed by national stereotypes (e.g. the ideas of heroic post-war reconstruction of the state or technical development). Nation-wide stereotypes are more influential than region-specific ones.

„Dziennik Bydgoski” to jedyna polska gazeta, która ukazywała się w Bydgoszczy na początku XX w., kiedy to miasto było silnie germanizowane. Celem gazety było podtrzymywanie tożsamości narodowej Polaków. Artykuł ten ukazuje, jak „Dziennik Bydgoski” kształtował wizerunek polskich i niemieckich mieszkańców miasta, a tym samym jak wpływał na ich wzajemne relacje. Gazeta oficjalnie podtrzymuje stereotyp złego Niemca i prześladowanego Polaka, ale jednocześnie ukazuje rzeczywiste więzi łączące reprezentantów obu narodów – wspólne doświadczenia kulturowe oraz styl życia.
“Dziennik Bydgoski” is the only Polish newspaper that appeared in Bydgoszcz at the beginning of the 20th century when the city was strongly Germanized. The goal of the newspaper was to maintain the national identity of Poles. This article shows how “Dziennik Bydgoski” shaped the image of Polish and German residents of the city and how it influenced their relations. The newspaper offi cially upholds the stereotype of the evil German and the persecuted Pole but at the same time it showed real ties connecting representatives of two nations – common lifestyle and cultural experience.

Artykuł jest poświęcony ciekawej tendecji we współczesnej prozie bałoruskiej: oswojaniu przestrzeni europejskiej, przeniesieniu akcji poszczególnych utworów z blokowisk Mińska do kawiarenek Warszawy i klubów w Berlinie. Wyraźnym przejawem owej tendencji jest nowa powieść znanego artysty oraz pisarza awangardowego Artura Klinaua Pikielhauba (2011). Autor artykułu szuka odpowiedzi na pytanie: w jaki sposób poszerzenie granic geograficznych akcji odbiło się na cechach artystycznych utworu? Za najważniejszą cechę powieści badacz uważa oryginalną, czasem ironiczną interpretację problemu samoidentyfikacji narodowej, kwestię poszukiwania przez Białoruś swojego miejsca w Europie oraz odbioru Białorusinów przez inne narody europejskie.
The article considers an interesting tendency of contemporary Belarusian prose: artistic adoption of the European geographical space, transfer of actions and narration from Minsk to cafés of Warsaw and clubs of Berlin. The vivid manifestation of this tendency is a new novel of a famous avant-garde artist and experimental writer Artur Klinaŭ Pickelhaube (2011). The author of the article investigates the matter how the expansion of the geographical borders influences the artistic peculiarities of the novel. The researcher thinks that the main value of the novel is a particular sometimes unusually ironic interpretation of the national self-identification, Belarus’s searches of its place in Europe, perception of the Belarusians by other Europeans.

International relations have always been a very complex and controversial phenomene affected by historical and political events, wchich influenced the forming of mutual prejudices, antipathy and stereotypes. The concept of national identity and nationalism began to shape relativetly late, in the XVI-XVII cebturies, and their advent was connected with national self-consiousness rise and political conditionnaly. This statement is either applicaple to the Polish-Russian relations, wchich not always were inflated with animosity and hatred. The author of the article considers the process of Russia and the Russians'negative image forming, defines the most significant events, and uniting and separating factors. In this context the two spheres of influence are meant: political-historical and cultural. In the author's opinion, nowadays the negative image of Russia and the Russians is fixed in mind of the Polish. It is very hard to overcome these prejudices, however there is such a possibility.

The main focus of this article is an analysis of one of Kurt Lück’s most extensive works – Mythos vom Deutschen in der polnischen Volksüberlieferung und Literatur – published in 1938. The article attempts to answer the question of the status of Lück’s large work of research into the “German East” in the 1930s, and the question of how the work was evaluated by German and Polish historians, ethnologists, and literary critics. The book was also presented in the context of the anti-Polish attitude of the author, whose activities and publications were strongly influenced by National Socialism.

The article attempts to analyse B. Lohvynenko’s and A. Chapai’s online-travelogues. The specifi city of the character-traveller endowed with the transcultural identity within the boundaries of their country under the conditions of globalized society has been traced. The occurrence of the opposition “own / strange” in the wanderings of B. Lohvynenko and A. Chapai has been investigated. Other ways of construing travellers’ national identity have been shown. The formation of the traveller’s national identity in B. Lohvynenko’s travelogue by means of national stereotypes cultivation has been analysed. Moreover, the construction of the character’s identity in A. Chapai’s travel-blog by the destruction of stereotypes has been considered.

Opis:
The role of corpus research in linguistics and in related fields of study has increased in recent decades. Searching for and analysis of collocations and concordances of a lexical unit, which makes it possible to determine its semantic preferences and semantic prosody, can be a tool for studying stereotypes, understood as overly generalized and simplified evaluative and affective images of a fragment of reality named by the lexical unit. The aim of this article is to verify the validity of supplementing studies based on the analysis of corpus resources with data obtained in free association tests. The study focuses on the lexical unit inwalida ‘an invalid’ as the name of a concept which may be subject to strong stereotyping. The resources of the balanced sub-corpus of the National Corpus of Polish, consisting of about 250 million words, were searched for associative responses to the word inwalida given by at least 2 people from a group of 40 Polish speakers. In the corpus, the co-occurrence of the word inwalida was checked with each of the 33 obtained associations, using a search tool to identify the contexts (concordances) containing both words – inwalida and the association – with an interval of 0 and ≤5. The results of the study indicate that an association test can be a significant complement to corpus data analyses: it can provide important elements of semantic prosody which are not found in corpus analysis results, it can guide concordance search and it can indicate the elements which are the most important for the meaning of the examined word.
W ostatnich dziesięcioleciach wzrasta rola badań korpusowych w językoznawstwie i naukach pokrewnych. Wyszukiwanie i analiza kolokacji i konkordancji określonej jednostki leksykalnej, pozwalające na określenie jej preferencji semantycznej i prozodii semantycznej, mogą stanowić narzędzie badania stereotypów, rozumianych jako nadmiernie uogólnione i uproszczone oceniająco-afektywne obrazy fragmentu rzeczywistości nazywanego przez daną jednostkę leksykalną. Celem analizy przedstawionej w artykule jest weryfikacja zasadności uzupełniania badań opartych na analizie zasobów korpusowych danymi uzyskanymi w teście skojarzeń swobodnych. Przeprowadzona analiza dotyczy jednostki leksykalnej inwalida, jako nazwy pojęcia podlegającego silnej stereotypizacji. W zasobach liczącego około 250 milionów słów podkorpusu zrównoważonego Narodowego Korpusu Języka Polskiego poszukiwano reakcji skojarzeniowych na hasło inwalida podanych przez minimum 2 osoby z 40-osobowej grupy użytkowników języka polskiego. Sprawdzono w korpusie współwystępowanie wyrazu inwalida kolejno z każdym z 33 uzyskanych skojarzeń, używając do tego celu narzędzia szukającego kontekstów (konkordancji) zawierających oba wyrazy – inwalida i skojarzenie – w odstępie 0 oraz ≤5. Wykazano, że test skojarzeniowy może w sposób istotny uzupełniać analizy korpusowe poprzez: dostarczanie ważnych elementów prozodii semantycznej, których nie ma w wynikach analiz korpusowych, ukierunkowanie wyszukiwania konkordancji oraz wskazywanie elementów najważniejszych dla znaczenia badanego wyrazu.

The paper focuses on the essay “My Stumbling Speech in Kyiv” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt which hitherto has been on the sidelines of Dürrenmatt studies. The literary portrait of a well-known Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko as a cultural “Other” and the self-projection of the essay’s author have been analyzed here in their interrelations with various cultural and political contexts.
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę eseju Friedricha Dürrenmatta Niewygłoszone przemówienie o Kijowie, który jak dotąd pozostaje na marginesie zainteresowań badaczy twórczości szwajcarskiego dramaturga. Portret literacki ukraińskiego poety Tarasa Szewczenki jako kulturowego Innego, a także portret własny autora tekstu zostały przenalizowane w aspekcie ich relacji wobec kontekstów kulturowych i politycznych.

The aim of the study was to determine whether the Podlasie entrepreneurs think about neighboring nations (Belarusian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian and Russian) in a stereotypical way (assigning them certain negative characteristic) and, if it affects in any way the decision about cooperation. The theoretical part of the article concerns the concept of stereotype, its features and functions. In the empirical part the results of researches are presented. They were carried out on a group of Polish entrepreneurs (in Podlasie) in order to identify their attitudes and opinions on some neighboring nations (Russians, Belarusians, Lithuanians and Ukrainians). The research was a pilot study, the sample included two hundred entrepreneurs, the authors’ questionnaire was used. In the light of the study negative national stereotypes seem to have a great importance in creating cross-border networking.

The Image of the Greeks in the German Press. Stereotypes and their Linguistic Expression in the Summer 2015 This paper addresses the image of Greeks in the German press in the summer 2015. During this time, the main topic in European politics was the Greek crisis, which was accompanied by a significant number of stereotypes about Greek and Greece. A linguistic recognition of stereotype refexrs to the interdisciplinary character of this concept, so especially politics plays a major role in this description. One main focus of this study is the question of which stereotypes we can find. It allows an insight into the contents spectrum of stereotypes. The second issue concerns mechanisms of stereotypes, i.e. how they are constituted, transported and consolidated.
Der folgende Beitrag ist politolinguistisch und diskursanalytisch angelegt. Besprochen werden länderübergreifende multimodale Kommunikationsprozesse, die zwischen der deutschen und der griechischen Sprachgemeinschaft bestehen. Die Untersuchungszäsur bildet der Sommer 2015, in dem das Thema der Griechenlandkrise in allen deutschen Medien sehr präsent ist. Anhand eines überregionalen deutschen Pressekorpus werden die sprachlichen Mittel untersucht, mit denen Stereotype über die Griechen in der deutschen Berichterstattung konstituiert, tradiert und gefestigt werden. Die Analyse widmet sich konkreten sprachlichen Realisierungen von Stereotypen, die nach ihrer Rolle und ihrem prädikativen Gehalt unter die Lupe genommen werden. Der pragmalinguistische Ansatz verspricht aufzuzeigen, welche Stereotype mit welchen Konnotationspotenzialen ausgelöst werden und transnational zur Annäherung bzw. zur Entfremdung führen.

Źródła stereotypów etnicznych są różnorakie i trudne do precyzyjnego określenia. Może temu sprzyjać niewiedza, niechęć, zabobon, schematyzm, polityka państw. Przed wojną na Łotwie dużą popularność zdobyła literacka legenda o Róży z Turaidy, która nie chciała wyjść za polskiego szlachcica (podniesionego do stereotypu Polaka) i wybrała śmierć. Jej popularność wzrastała po 1990 r. Pojawił się grób legendarnej Róży i jej muzeum oraz konterfekty i rzeźby plenerowe. Kwestia w Polsce mało znana, podobnie jak i autor legendy Janis Rainis, której fabuła jest zaczerpnięta z XVI-wiecznego dzieła Marcina Bielskiego, bezpośrednio lub przez XIX-wieczne utwory bałtyckich Niemców. Ten stereotyp utrwalił się w kulturze Łotwy, stając się kanwą dla budowy pomników, muzeów, baletu i opery. Kazus ważny dla relacjach obu narodów.
Do stigmatising national stereotype arises from ignorance? In 1927 Latvian bard Janis Rainis wrote play “Lave stronger then death”, gaining soon national legend, with a quality of historic fact. Here the Polish noble provoke deapth of teenager Rose of Turaida. Rainis probably copied the plot from XVI c. story written by M. Bielski or by later poetry of Baltic Germans of XVIII/XIX c. This stereotype became important in Latvian culture and history. But phenomenon is larger & more important, especially as image of Poles.

Opis:
Problemy związane z różnicami na tle narodowościowym stanowią istotny temat podnoszony w przestrzeni publicznej. Są one obecne również w kulturze popularnej, także w kinematografii. Wśród produkcji, które ujmują te kwestie, można wskazać także te, które zostały nagrodzone Nagrodą Amerykańskiej Akademii Filmowej. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja wyników badań na temat obrazu postaci o narodowości innej niż amerykańska oraz ich znaczenia dla analizowanych produkcji filmowych. Materiał badawczy stanowiło 90 filmów wyróżnionych wspomnianą nagrodą w kategorii „Najlepszy film”. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono przykładom ukazującym stereotypy i konflikty na tle narodowościowym oraz skupiono się na postaciach migrantów w wybranych filmach. Wyniki przeprowadzonego badania wykazały, że kwestia różnic na tle narodowościowym stanowi ważny temat w analizowanych filmach. W wielu z analizowanych produkcji wątki narodowościowe odgrywają kluczową rolę, prezentując np. drogę do odzyskania niepodległości czy obraz i problemy migrantów w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki. Ponadto postaci o narodowości innej niż amerykańska wystąpiły w 81% analizowanych produkcji filmowych, a ponad połowa z nich odgrywała role pierwszoplanowe.
Problems related to national differences are a relevant topic raised in the public sphere. They are also present in popular culture, including cinematography. Among the films that capture such issues, it is important to focus on those awarded with an Academy Award (Oscar). The aim of this paper is to present the results of the research on the image of characters of nationalities different than American and their meaning for analyzed films. The research sample included 90 films that won the aforementioned award in the 'Best Picture' category. Particular attention was paid to cases that showed stereotypes and conflicts related to nationality and whose focus was on the role of migrants. The results of the conducted research showed that national differences were a relevant topic in the awarded films. In many of the analyzed film productions, the nationality thread played a key role, for example, in presenting the way to regain independence or the image and problems of migrants in the United States of America. Moreover, non-American characters appeared in 81% of the analyzed film productions and more than half of them played leading roles.

Opis:
Autorka podejmuje próbę odczytania powieści Olgi Tokarczuk Prawiek i inne czasy przez pryzmat kategorii i pojęć współczesnej lingwistyki kulturowej (etnolingwistyki) i ekologicznej, takich jak  językowy obraz świata, stereotyp, mapa mentalna, leksykalny ekosystem. Analiza języka utworu za pomocą instrumentarium lingwistyki kulturowej pozwoliła na sformułowanie przekonania, że noblistka stworzyła w tym utworze historyczno-kulturowy i społeczny „portret” tej części Europy Środkowej, która nazywa się Polska prowincjonalna. Jej zdaniem obraz ten składa się pewnego systemu prawd, mitów i nierzadko fałszywych wyobrażeń. Nie podejmując sporu z zespołem obecnych w naszej kulturze i mentalności stereotypów (np. etnicznych), mitów i przeświadczeń, pisarka wskazała na siłę oddziaływania powielanych nadal klisz myślowych. Natomiast narzędzia badawcze lingwistyki ekologicznej pozwoliły dostrzec w powieści  polemikę z tradycją humanistyki antroponormatywnej i określić postawę autorki jako proekologiczną. 
L’autrice cerca di leggere il romanzo Nella quiete del tempo di Olga Tokarczuk attraverso il prisma di categorie e concetti della linguistica culturale contemporanea (etnolinguistica) e dell’ecologia, come l’immagine linguistica del mondo, lo stereotipo, la mappa mentale, l’ecosistema lessicale. L’analisi del linguaggio dell’opera con con l’ausilio degli strumenti della linguistica culturale ha permesso di formulare la convinzione che il premio Nobel ha creato in quest’opera un “ritratto” storico-culturale e sociale di quella parte dell’Europa centrale chiamata Polonia provinciale. Secondo lei, questa immagine consiste in un certo sistema di verità, miti e spesso false percezioni. Senza entrare in polemica con l’insieme di stereotipi (per esempio stereotipi etnici), miti e credenze presenti nella nostra cultura e mentalità, la scrittrice ha indicato il potere dell’influenza dei cliché mentali ancora riprodotti. Gli strumenti di ricerca della linguistica ecologica, d’altra parte, hanno permesso di scrutare nel romanzo una polemica con la tradizione delle discipline umanistiche antroponormative e di definire l’atteggiamento dell’autrice come pro-ecologico.
Taking recourse to such concepts of cultural and ecological linguistics as the linguistic picture of the world, mental maps, stereotypes and linguistic ecosystem the article tries to reinterpret Olga Tokarczuk’s Primeval and Other Times. Our analysis demonstrates that the Nobel prize winning writer has constituted a  historical, cultural, and social portrait of a  part of Central Europe called “provincial Poland.” This cultural construction is composed of a  system of truths and myths, as well as fictitious imaginings. These are mental cliches which still actively influence cultural and social behaviour in this part of the world. Ecological linguistics helped to identify ways in which Tokarczuk, assuming a  proecological attitude, deconstructs the tradition of anthroponormative thinking.
