    Opis:
    The article explores the views of representatives of the Belarusian Narodniks of the second half of the nineteenth century on the problem of the historical mission of the national intelligentsia. The basic assumptions of the concept of national revival of the Belarusian people are revealed, as well as independent political and cultural existence of the Belarusian territory, its formation and development of a national idea.
    В статье исследуются взгляды представителей белорусского народничества второй половины ХIХ века на проблему исторического предназначения национальной интеллигенции. Раскрыты основные положения выдвигаемой ими концепции национального возрождения белорусского народа, самостоятельного политического и культурного существования белорусского края, формирования и развития национальной идеи.

    Intelligentsia biographies in Belarus. A case studyDrawing on a case study from the body of empirical research which includes 30 narrative interviews conducted using Fritz Schuetze’s biographical method with male and female residents of Belarus, the author explores the process of Belarusian identity formation of a Belarusian-speaking dissenting intellectual. The case study is drawn from the author’s research into the ways in which Belarusian-speaking intellectuals (the group locating itself in opposition to the establishment by the very recourse to the literary Belarusian language of instruction and everyday life as well as other dissenting identity markers) conceptualize and hone their national identity. One can trace the path towards fully-fledged Belarusian identity which unrolls via turning points, thanks to significant others through participation in intelligentsia circles. One of the membership rules in the social world of intelligentsia is the use of the high-profile Belarusian language. The interpretive analysis is set against the backdrop of the socio-linguistic situation in contemporary Belarus with its authoritarian regime, advanced Russification, contested memory field, restrained memory work and conflicting historical and national discourses.

    Opis:
    The article is devoted to a critical analysis of current controversies concerning the Polish national identity, and the interpretation of the impact of nobles’ democracy on the demise of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. It considers the role of national identity as a factor influencing civic culture and, therefore, determining its usefulness in assuring the proper functioning of the constitutional order. The analysis assumes that (1) the current global order is the product of the emergence of nation-states; (2) that a nation-state cannot exist without civil society grounded in the concept of national identity and patriotism. Patriotism is opposed here to nationalism; similarly, cosmopolitism is opposed to internationalism. Patriotism and cosmopolitism are compatible and imply an open-minded, inclusive attitude to different national identities. Both nationalism with its focus on superiority of one’s own nation, and internationalism — rejection of the nation-state in the name of an imaginary global, stateless community — are exclusive. These both exclusive postures present a threat to civil society.

    The author who, for many decades, worked on the history of Polish intelligentsia in the interwar period, extends his scholarly interest to the whole twentieth and the early twenty-first century. He concludes that the intelligentsia as a social strata begin to be less important than the intelligentsia as a cultural and intellectual elite. The present study sketches a summary of the intelligentsia’s history.
    Autor, który przez wiele dziesięcioleci zajmował się historią inteligencji polskiej w latach międzywojennych, rozszerza swe zainteresowania na cały okres XX i początki XXI w. Dochodzi do wniosku, że inteligencja jako warstwa społeczna zaczyna być mniej ważna od inteligencji w rozumieniu elity kulturowej i intelektualnej. Szkic rysuje w skrócie jej dzieje.
