Films are an important source of symbolism. They help people construct a national identity and memory of the past. Contemporary lm productions in Central and Eastern Europe which focus on themes such as World Wars I and II and post-communism, rewrite and rede ne the national identity of citizens. It is important to analyze and discuss these lms as a way to gaining a richer understanding of the discourses of national identity. In the Polish lm Rose (Róża) by Wojciech Smarzowski, the main female character is the recipient of an imposed identity before and after World War II. On the other hand, in the Polish lm In Darkness director Agnieszka Holland tells the story of a man who helps Jews hide in the sewer system. Holland and Smarzowski portray Poles as individuals willing to risk their lives for Jewish people: this is also national identity construction.

The author seeks to reconstruct “breakthroughs, revivals, and collapses” in The Annals of Jan Długosz. Although the chronicler did not specify turning points in the history of Poland, but it seems to be possible to find these breakthrough events by analysing the narrative and referring to the knowledge about Długosz’s writing method and way of thinking. It is also necessary to remember that the chronicle’s conceptual framework did not extend beyond a medieval mental frame, and for this reason it is difficult to expect him to formulate opinions and ideas corresponding to the contemporary understanding of individual problems.

It was comissioned in the 1920s and 1930s, but, for a number of reasons, i.e. due to the influence of Marxist ideology and repressions against Byelarusian historians, remained unwritten in the prewar period. The writing process was resumed at the final stage of World War II by historians from the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. Russian historians also actively participated in the preparatory stage. They formulated conceptual approaches to writing the national history of BSSR. By 1954, after numerous discussions about its content, the textbook was approved by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the BSSR and became the main account on the history of Belarus in the Soviet period.

Sebastian Barry, Irish History, revisionist history, national identity, Irish novel
Opis:
Critics of contemporary Irish literature note a surprising omnipresence of historical themes in the novels of a country whose present day is so eventful. Such prominent writers like, Roddy Doyle, Patrick McCabe or Sebastian Barry seem to be immersed in Irish twentieth-century history and the national myth. Barry’s theatre plays and novels usually question the official, heroic version of history by focusing on the forgotten and the marginalised: loyalist Catholics, single women, children. The present article analyses two of his novels: The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty (1998) and The Secret Scripture (2008), which share some of the characters and are both set in Sligo in the first half of the twentieth century. The present article claims that in the ten years that separates the publication of these novels, Barry’s attitude to history visibly changed. Contrary to the opinion of most critics, Barry’s approach evolved from the uncompromising revisionism of the earlier novel to considerable scepticism about the possibility of objective history and historical truth in the later work. The article also suggests that tracing this process allows the reader to appreciate the writer’s motivation as an attempt to deal with the taboos of the past before embarking on the problems of the present.

Opis:
Mihai Eminescu is known as the Romanian national poet, the most important writer of the XIXͭʰ century in Romanian literature, whose writings have been intensely interpreted since his poetic debut. Therefore, this paper proposes a study of the way the literary dictionaries build the image of “the national poet”. This identity construct is significant to our investigation because it influences the interpretation of the poet figure through history. In order to have a wider view of the problem, we consulted a series of literary dictionaries and, also, dictionaries for students use to see how the figure of Eminescu is taught in schools.  Moreover, we did not put aside foreign dictionaries, which bring a more objective perspective to the issue. The majority of Romanian dictionaries alter the poet’s portrait in favor of a “national construct”, created partly by the use of rhetoric figures. Another way of composing him a deformed image is accomplished by writing subjective and opaque interpretation of his poems. Consequently, such hermeneutics focuses on developing a myth that reflects mainly the way Romanians as nation want to be recognized and remembered.

A particular emphasis is placed on presenting the groups active during the “sovereignty of the Parliament,” i.e. in the years 1919–1926. The Polish Socialist Party (PPS) and National Democracy (ND), portrayed as the main political antagonists, are discussed, as well as the peasants’ parties, acting as the political centre. In addition, the author presents the main political currents representing the Jewish and Ukrainian minorities, and describes the special place of the Polish Communist Party in the political system of that time.

The aim of the study is to show the evolution of the National Legionary State from its beginnings to its fi nal form of revolt (20-23rd January 1941). This type of state was created on 14th September 1940 by the royal wish of Michael I of Romania, who was infl uenced by General Ion Antonescu. The study has the purpose to show how anti-Semitism can transform itself from a philosophy concept, through the ideas of Nae Ionescu, to a state ideology. The main documents which I studied are based on archives, the constitution of the state, during the period mentioned in the title, and the journals of general Ion Antonescu, or main political fi gures, and the notes written by Filip Browner, known better as Filip Brunea Fox, in his City of massacre. Journal of Legionary, Rebellion and Crime. This study is important because it analyzes a totalitarian regime that was made possible by the intervention of political arrangements alongside the help of the Legion of the Archangel Michael, founded by the Corneliu Zelea Codreanu in 1927.

Opis:
The article discusses the transformation of Ukraine from a peripheral colony to a European nation-state. It examines changes in the interpretation of UkrainianRussian relations in historiography, public perceptions, and museum exhibitions related to the ongoing war. It demonstrates that since 24 February 2022, Ukraine’s politics of memory has exclusively followed a continuously expanding anti-colonial perspective. The article highlights a shift in Ukrainian society’s view of its past, with growing interest in the country’s history and a move away from the Soviet perspective. Museums are crucial in shaping these narrative changes and fostering Ukrainian national identity. The article also explores societal transformations since 1991, showing an increased identification with the state and a gradual distancing from Russia. This is accompanied by a westward turn in geopolitical orientation and a desire to join the European Union. The National Museum of History of Ukraine in the Second World War in Kyiv serves as an example of these processes, reflecting a nuanced portrayal of the war and of its human dimension. The museum’s commitment can be seen as a pillar of a nation-state building project, with symbolic identification shifting from the East to the West, towards the EU and NATO.

National megalomania in Polish reflection in the early 20th centuryIn the early 20th century, a number of Polish thinkers betrayed a mentality in which was deeply rooted the notion of the Polish nation’s unique character. These thinkers also expressed a conviction that Poles had a special mission both in Europe in general and towards other European nations. The signs of the intellectual elite’s national megalomania were reflected in Polish journalistic writings in the final period of World War I and the initial period of regained independence shortly after it.The article analyzes the views of selected thinkers: the philosopher W. Lutosławski, the journalist and literary critic A. Górski, the publicist A. Chołoniewski, and the historian J.K. Kochanowski. All of them believed in an optimistic picture of Polish history and emphasized the significance of the Polish mission in an ethical dimension understood as a desire to establish European order based both on respect towards the individual and at the same time on national diversity. This attitude was clearly based on Romantic thought – a historiosophy tinted with mesianism. All these authors dealt with the same themes from Polish history, treating them as a justification of their attitudes (such as: the Republic of Nobility as an embodiment of the ideal of freedom, Poland as an intermediary between the East and the West, as well as the propagator of Christian civilization in the East; the prominent role of Poles among the Slavic peoples, the importance of Catholicism). All in all, they created a mythologized vision of the Polish Republic in order to integrate the Polish society and mobilize it to act. This stream of glorification of the Polish statehood met with severe criticism after Poland regained its independence. S. Zakrzewski, F. Bujak, J.S. Bystroń, Bocheński brothers and others protested against falsifying the history of Poland.

This time, however, the author does not concentrate on its symbolic dimension in the process of development of the Bulgarian literary language but on the lexis concerning the Bulgarian rulers. Opis:
This text analyzes the reasons for the formation of a divided Ukrainian historical remembrance. One must stress out that it is in fact the “interpretation of its national history that divides Ukrainians in the first place”. As regards the East Ukrainians, being closely linked to Russians, Ukrainian identity can be seen as being continually in a state of “belatedness”, hence the Soviet version of historical remembrance emerged. In Western-Ukraine, the territories of which were only taken-over by the Soviet Union in 1945, a sovereign historical image independent to the Russian had taken shape. Finally, in the central region of Ukraine, Russian-speaking intellectuals of Russian culture were forced to, in order to strengthen their position, prove their “Ukraineness”.
Tekst ten analizuje przyczyny powstania podzielonej pamięci historycznej Ukrainy. Wreszcie w centralnym regionie Ukrainy rosyjskojęzyczni intelektualiści kultury rosyjskiej zostali zmuszeni do udowodnienia swojej “ukraińskości” w celu wzmocnienia swojej pozycji.
