    Opis:
    Purpose: The article presents the results of qualitative research related to answering the question: “How can reporting be supported when there is no access to professional BI tools?”. Design/methodology/approach: The answer to this question was set in the context of the BI layers proposed by Todd (todd 2017). This approach allowed one to determine, in each layer, operations performed on data that support reporting. The main research method was the participation observation made in the author’s involvement in the project management team. Findings: Supporting reporting in project management when there is no access to professional BI tools needs strong technical competences and great creativity by the project management team in using applications such as spreadsheets or database tools. The most helpful functionalities provided by spreadsheets are text and search functions and the data conversion wizard. The most useful functionality provided by database tools was intelligent calculations made by queries and automatic report design provided by MS Access. Originality/value: The paper presents an examination of the set of operations and IT tools needed in a business analysis made in project management in a situation where there is no access to professional BI tools.

    Opis:
    Purpose: The objective of this paper is to make the reader aware of how to design dashboards dedicated to project indicator visualization so as to support their digestibility, usability (scannability) and customizability. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve this goal, first, a literature review was conducted to identify principles for designing dashboards for this issue. Secondly, a real project management dashboard was built to investigate, in terms of technical issues, which interventions a project management dashboard designer should use to create a useful tool that would support the work of the project team. Findings: The digestibility should address the following issues: 1) the optimal number of visualizations, 2) chart selections in a way that enables adaptation to data and assumed initiated action, 3) color design in the context of best contras, with color-blind users in mind. In addition, the usability (scannability) should be intuitive. Thus, elements related to time widget intervals and click to filter options have to be added. To provide the customizability, the dashboard should be designed to display project indicators tailored to the tasks of a particular project team. Originality/value: New in the paper is an examination of a dashboard digestibility, scannability, and customizability in the area of project indicator visualization.

    Purpose: The article presents the results of qualitative research related to identifying the set of skills needed in project management business analysis. Design/methodology/approach: To recognize the set of skills, it was important to focus on three pivotal issues, starting with specifying which layers of business analysis in project management can be extracted, then answering the question of which IT tools are to be used in this analysis as well, and which skills are needed to perform in it. The main research method was participation observation by way of the author’s involvement in a project management team. Findings: The following layers of business analysis in project management were established: 1) data management, 2) intelligent calculations, 3) delivery mode, 4) consumption device, 5) business enablement. The most important skills are as follows: joining disparate data sources, cleaning data, organizing data better, creating calculations, adjusting visualizations to the tools used by end-users to consume visualizations. MS Excel and MS Access were found to be valuable tools used in this analysis. Originality/value: New in the paper is an examination of the set of skills needed in the project management business analysis in the context of applying MS Excel and MS Access.

Celem artykułu jest ocena wybranych narzędzi BI z punktu widzenia kadry zarządzającej jako ich kluczowego użytkownika. Na wstępie artykułu scharakteryzowano współczesny rynek narzędzi klasy BI. Główną część rozważań stanowi ocena platform Power BI Desktop, Tableau Desktop i QlikView oferowanych przez trzech liderów tego rynku.
    Effective and efficient management of a modern enterprise requires the implementation of an analytical approach in which business intelligence (BI) is increasingly used. The aim of this paper is the assessment of selected BI tools from the point of view of managers as their key users. At the beginning of the article, the modern BI tools market has been characterized. The main part of the considerations is the evaluation of Power BI Desktop, Tableau Desktop and QlikView platforms offered by the three leaders of this market.

    The research objective for this study is to investigate different Information Technology (IT) tools for Business Intelligence (BI) development. Firstly, the issue of BI was identified and the various ages in BI development were presented. Then, the most important IT tools used in BI development were discussed. Finally, some strengths and weaknesses of described tools were demonstrated. The study was based mainly on a critical analysis of literature, creative thinking and an interpretive philosophy. The results of this research can be used by IT and business leaders as they plan and develop BI applications in their organizations.
    Celem artykułu jest rozpoznanie możliwości różnych narzędzi IT do budowy aplikacji Business Intelligence (BI). Na wstępie zidentyfikowano istotę BI oraz opisano trzy etapy rozwoju systemów BI. Następnie omówiono różne narzędzia IT, jakie mogą być stosowane do budowy BI w organizacjach. Ostatecznie, mocne i słabe strony tych narzędzi zostały zaprezentowane. Badania zostały przeprowadzone w oparciu o krytyczną analizę literatury przedmiotu. Wyniki badań mogą być interesujące dla specjalistów IT oraz menedżerów, którzy planują tworzenie aplikacji BI w swoich organizacjach.

    Współczesny menedżer powinien stale zdobywać nowe kompetencje wynikające z rozwoju technologii wspierających zarządzanie przedsiębiorstwem. Taką koncepcją, coraz częściej wykorzystywaną w firmach, jest business intelligence (BI). Celem artykułu jest analiza wiedzy menedżerów dotyczącej istoty i narzędzi BI. W jego pierwszej części omówiono podejście zarządzania przez dane oraz ideę BI. Następnie opisano metodykę przeprowadzonego badania ankietowego. Końcową część rozważań stanowi analiza otrzymanych rezultatów wskazujących na niski poziom wiedzy menedżerów o istocie i narzędziach BI.
    A contemporary manager should constantly acquire new competences resulting from the development of technologies supporting management the enterprise. Such a concept that is increasingly utilised in companies is business intelligence (BI).The aim of the paper is the analysis of managers’ knowledge of the essence and tools of BI. At the beginning of the article the concept of data driven management and BI has been discussed. Next, the methodology of the questionnaire survey has been described. The final part of the considerations is the analysis of the survey results, which indicate that the level of knowledge of managers about the essence and tools of BI is very low.
