The Żurawnica Sandstone Member was deposited in the Paleocene on the northern slope of the Magura Basin in the western part of the Tethys. It is built of clastic material transported by gravitational currents from shallow parts of the Foremagura Ridge (Cieszkowski et al., 1999), which was an uplifted intrabasinal structure. At the top of the Żurawnica Hill (Beskid Makowski, location known as Kozie Skały) a well-exposed section crops out. It is a part of flysch succession of the Magura Nappe (Cieszkowski et al., 2006). In the lower part of the section thick-bedded sandstone with red algal grains occurs. Algal remnants were redeposited from the photic zone of the carbonate platform, which developed on the Foremagura Ridge. Their structure-taxonomic differentiation allows to reconstruct algal palaeoenvironment. The red algae are represented by Sporolithaceae, Melobesioideae, and Mastophoroideae genera. They correspond to three algal facies: debris, algal pavement facies, and Melobesioideae rhodolith pavement facies. Sand-sized red algal grains are the most numerous. They are fragmented and well rounded crustaceous algal thalli, typically with no traces of bioerosion. They represent algal debris facies, which was developed in high energy environment (Nebelsick et al., 2005). Red algae grains could be fragmented and rounded during turbidity transport, but considering the different degree of abrasion, especially in gravel fraction, it should be assumed that the rounding took place before the turbidity transportation. Two types of gravel grains are present: not rounded algal limestone clasts and rhodoliths. The non-rhodolith grains are built of encrusting (layered and foliose), warty, and lumpy algal crusts. Rhodoliths can be divided into two types: irregular and regular ones. Irregular rhodoliths are up to 3 cm in diameter. They contain large nuclei constituting grain skeleton. Both non-rhodolith grains and irregular rhodolits are polygeneric and contain numerous benthic organisms (bryozoans, encrusting foraminifera, and bivalves) between algal lamella, as well as constructional voids. They are bioeroded. They are elements of algal pavement facies for which the occurrence of the algal buildups with irregular rhodoliths in areas, where the energy of the environment is a bit higher is typical (Nebelsick et al., 2005, 2013; Bassi et al., 2017). The regular rhodoliths, up to 0.5 cm in size, contain small carboniferous nuclei. Typically, they are unigeneric (Sporolithaceae, Melobesioideae) and not contain other benthic organisms. Lack of constructional voids was observed in thick algal encrustation. Only encrusting growth form was observed. Regular rhodoliths are typically developed as a main part of Melobesioideae rhodoliths pavement facies, which is rather “deep” water facies of high energy environments (Adey, 1986; Bassi et al., 2017).

Przedmiotem pracy są Karpaty zewnętrzne pomiędzy Bielskiem-Białą a Nowym Targiem. Zbudowane są one z silnie, płaszczowinowo sfałdowanych osadów fliszowych wieku jury górnej - neogenu. Wśród płaszczowin Karpat zewnętrznych wyróżnia się (idąc od południa): jednostkę (płaszczowinę) magurską, grupę płaszczowin przedmagurskich, płaszczowiny śląską, podśląską i skolską (grupa średnia). Jednostka magurska od południa, wzdłuż linii Stare Bystre - Szaflary, graniczy z pienińskim pasem skałkowym. Jest nasunięta na jednostki grupy średniej - wielkość nasunięcia wynosi co najmniej 20 km. Strefa przedmagurska ciągnie się wąskim pasem z rejonu Milówki w kierunku na południowe zbocze Beskidu Małego, gdzie zanika. Płaszczowina śląska podzielona jest wzdłuż uskoku Skawy na dwa odcinki. Zachodni charakteryzuje się potężnym rozwojem kredowych piaskowców godulskich, we wschodnim odsłaniają się na znaczniejszym obszarze warstwy krośnieńskie. Płaszczowina podśląska występuje w postaci porozrywanych strzępów i płatów pojawiających się u brzegu płaszczowiny śląskiej, jak również w oknach tektonicznych w obrębie jednostki śląskiej. Jednostka skolska występuje na północ od Wadowic i Andrychowa, gdzie tworzy element łuskowo nasunięty na miocen zapadliska przedkarpackiego.
The Polish Outer Carpathians between Bielsko-Biała and Nowy Targ are built up from the thrust, imbricated Upper Jurassic - Neogene flysch deposits. The following Outer Carpathian nappes have been distinguished: Magura Nappe, Fore-Magura group of nappes, Silesian, Subsilesian and Skole Nappes. The Magura Nappe borders along Stare Bystre-Szaflary line with the Pieniny Klippen Belt. It is thrust over the Fore-Magura and Silesian nappes at least 20 km. The Skawa line system of faults displaces the Magura Nappe margin 2 km northward. The Fore-Magura narrow zone runs from Milówka to the southern slope of Beskid Mały, where disappears from the surface. The Silesian Nappe is devided into two segments along the Skawa fault. The western one is characterized by the development of Cretaceous Godula Sandstones, eastern by the occurrence of Krosno Beds. The Sub-Silesian Nappe occurs as broken pieces along the northern margin of the Silesian Nappe, as well as in the tectonic windows within the Silesian Nappe. The Skole Unit is thrust over the Miocene deposits of Carpathian Foredeep in the area north of Wadowice and Andrychów.

Foraminiferal and calcareous nannofossil assemblages from the Eastern Carpathians (northern part of the Tarcău Nappe, Romania) were documented and correlated in order to reconstruct the palaeonvironmental settings and provide a biostratigraphic framework of the Plopu Formation. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by flysch-type agglutinated taxa, suggesting a bathyal palaeodepth with frequent oscillations of the carbon compensation depth. The agglutinated foraminifera morphogroup analyses suggest different levels of organic matter influx and oxygenation. Both the foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil assemblages suggest a shift between the warm mid Eocene to the cooler late Eocene climate. Biostratigraphic data based on calcareous nannofossils (NP15–NP19/NNTe8–NNTe12 biozones) helped to establish the age of the formation. Four assemblages of benthic agglutinated foraminifera (Psammosiphonella cylindrica – Nothia excelsa; Paratrochamminoides spp. – Trochamminoides spp.; Karrerulina spp.– Reticulophragmium amplectens; Spiroplectammina spectabilis) correlated with calcareous nannofossil bioevents supported the placement of the mid to late Eocene transition within the Plopu Formation.

The joint network in the portion of the Dukla Nappe studied originated in two stages showing different orientations of the stress field axes. The older, compressive stage I was characterised by a N45°E-orientated (at present coordinates) horizontal s1, and formation of the diagonal, shear (SL and SR) joint system. The younger, extensional stage II was characterised by vertical s1 and horizontal, N35°E-orientated (also at present coordinates) s3, suitable for formation of the fold-parallel joints. At the turn of the first stage, under diminishing horizontal compression (s1 trending N35°E), the cross-fold T joints developed. The orientation of the maximum compression axis changed between stages I and II. The first stage probably commenced while strata which were not fully lithified underwent shortening, and lasted until the termination of nappe emplacement. The second stage, in turn, is associated with post-orogenic collapse of the Carpathians, whose onset in the study region began at least in Late Miocene times.

Opis:
The oldest flysch deposits are the leading theme of the planned "Silesian-Moravian-Żywiec Beskid" Geopark. The geopark is located in the area of Beskid Śląski Mts. and Beskid Żywiecki Mts. in the territory ofPoland. This is a region of the occurrence of a number of tectonic units of the Outer Carpathians, including Pieniny Klippen Belt, Magura Nappe (with Krynica, Bystrica, Raca and Siary tec- tonic-facies zones), Fore-Magura Unit, Silesian Nappe and Subsilesian Nappe. Geodiversity of this area is defined by well-exposed sections ofrocks. They were the sites ofclassical geological work in the 19th century. Within the geopark boundaries, there are the type localities of the following tectonic units: Silesian Nappe, Fore-Magura, Bystrica and Raca units, as well as Jaworzynka, Bystrica, Vyhylovka, Vendryne and Cieszyn Limestone formations, Malinowska Skala Conglomerate, Mutne Sandstone, and Cisownica Shale members. Landslides, attractive geomorphologic landforms (e.g., highest peaks of the Beskidy Mts., providing magnificent views), waterfalls, diversified river valleys, tors, caves as well as places associated with the history and tradition of this region represent geotouristic attractions with a high potential. They will be included in the network ofgeosites protected within the planned geopark. Analysis ofthe geopark area indicates a high degree of variability of natural values, especially its geodiversity and richness of the historical-cultural heritage. The preservation and protection methods are also diversified. This region represents unique geoenvironmental and historical values on the European scale, therefore offering good chances for establishment of geopark. The documentation of geosites has already been gathered at this stage of work. The information requires only updating, minor additions and construction ofa unified database. The evaluation ofthe current touristic infrastructure have also brought very positive results; the area isfrequented by millions oftouristsfrom Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and other countries.

A study of the second-order folds in the eastern part of the Silesian Nappe allows one to distinguish two groups of structures: longitudinal ones and those orientated obliquely to the strike of the first-order fold axes. Analysis of orientation of the second-order fold axes has made it possible to reconstruct the orientation of s1 stress axes and compression trajectories for each group of folds individually. The results of such a reconstruction imply that the two groups of folds must have been developing independently one from another. Longitudinal folds were formed together with the first-order folds, under the influence of clockwise rotating compression caused by the Early Miocene plate collision, whereas development of the oblique folds was influenced by counterclockwise rotating compression, what seems to be connected with the final push of the Carpathians in Sarmatian times.

A Late Carboniferous (Early Moscovian) olistostrome developed in the Kadamzhai and Khaidarkan gold-antimony-mercury deposits on the Alay Ridge northern slope (Kyrgyzstan), at the front of the Late Paleozoic Southern Tian Shan nappes, is characterized. It comprises a sub-nappe olistostrome in a collisional tectonic setting. The olistostrome contains olistoliths and olistoplaques containing parts of the mid-Paleozoic sedimentary successions belonging to the parautochthon and lower nappes of the northern Bukantau-Kokshaal branch of the Southern Tian Shan nappe belt. The olistostrome accumulated ahead the advancing nappes in the foredeep basin that was filled with turbidities and debris-flow deposits (Tolubai Formathion). The parautochthon was partly dismembered into thrust limestone sheets which disintegrated and slid into unconsolidated sediments of the foredeep basin, forming large limestone olistoliths and olistoplaques. Olistoliths containing shales and bedded cherts were slid from the lower nappes. Tectonic breccias up to melange scale are present in some olistoliths, suggesting tectonic disintegration within the nappe pile and the subsequent sliding of the tectonized blocks into the olistostrome basin. Ore-bearing silicified rocks (so-called “jasperoids”) with antimony-mercury and gold mineralization are located predominantly along the contacts of the limestone olistoliths/olistoplaques with a terrigenous matrix.

The zircon populations from the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous– Palaeocene) and Menilite (Oligocene–lower Miocene) formations in the northern part of the Skole Nappe in Poland were examined to evaluate interpretations of the external morphology of detrital zircon in provenance research. The advantage of the zircon typology method, supplemented with elongation measurements, is that it may be applied successfully to comparisons of euhedral zircon populations from sedimentary deposits of different ages and unknown provenance. The zircon typology method, along with elongation measurements of zircons, contributes valuable data that supplement conventional heavy-mineral analyses. It also permits the recognition of potential source areas and rock types for further comparative research.

Opis:
A new lithostratigraphic unit - the Barnasiówka Radiolarian Shale Formation - is herein defined. It belongs to the Silesian Series of the Outer Carpathians. The formation consists of biosiliceous deposits rich in organic matter, laid down around the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary. The formation includes, from bottom to top: (1) a series of green to black, calcareous and siliceous shales, alternating with layers of chert, siliceous siltstone and sandstone (up to 10 m thick); (2) a series of green to black, argillaceous to siliceous shales, intercalated with tuffites, bentonites, and a ferromanganese layer (up to 9 cm thick) in its middle part (up to 3.2 m thick); (3) a series of green and red, siliceous siltstones and cherts with intercalations of non-calcareous green shales and benthonites (up to 2 m thick). The total thickness of the formation ranges from 0.5 m in the eastern part (reduced tectonically?) up to about 14-15 m in the middle and the western parts of the Silesian Nappe, due to the increase in the number and thickness of turbidite intercalations. The formation represents the Holocryptocanium barbui - Holocryptocanium tuberculatum through the Alie-vium superbum radiolarian zones and the Uvigerinammina praejankoi-Uvigerinammina jankoi foraminiferal zones, which correspond to the Upper Cenomanian through the lowermost Turonian. Microfacies and geochemical characteristics of the distinguished lithological types are presented in this paper, based on recent studies and published data. The described formation has been compared and correlated with deposits of similar age from other tectonic- facies units of the Outer Carpathians in Poland and Ukraine.

The turbiditic to hemipelagic, fine-grained deposits of the Hradiště Formation (Hauterivian, 132 Ma) to the Lhoty Formation (Albian–Cenomanian, 99 Ma) in the western part of the Silesian Nappe (Polish Outer Car- pathians) were studied mineralogically and geochemically to determine if the main factors controlling the chemistry of the sedimentary material can be attributed to provenance, or to post-depositional processes. A high degree of weathering of the source rocks is indicated by the chemical index of alteration (CIA) that varies from 75.98 to 89.86, and Th/U ratios (~4 with outliers at 1.85 and >6). The cooccurrence of rounded and unabraded grains of zircon and rutile, the enrichment in Zr and Hf, as well as the high Zr/Sc ratios suggest that the Hradiště and Veřovice Formations contain recycled material. Plots of La/Th versus Hf and Th against Sc show that samples occur in the field of felsic and mixed felsic/basic sources. On a ternary La–Th–Sc diagram, all of the sediments studied are referable to the continental island-arc field. The European Plate, as an alimentary area, has a mosaic structure consisting of Cadomian and Variscan elements. The Proto-Silesian Ridge was detached from the continent, because of rifting. Therefore, it could have corresponded to a continental island arc. The concentrations of Fe and trace metals (e.g., Mo, Au, Cu) in the Veřovice Formation and silica and potassium additions to the Veřovice and Lhoty Formations, as well as the fractionation of REE, and Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, and Y can be explained by the action of basinal brines. The fluids were of hydrothermal origin and/or were released, owing to the dewatering of clay minerals. Diagenetic processes could have exerted a greater influence on sedimentary rock chemistry than the provenance and sedimentary processes. A distinction between primary, terrigenous elements and those changed diagenetically is necessary for the reliable determination of provenance.

Heavy minerals from sandstones belonging mostly to the Boryslav Sandstone and Kliva Sandstone members of the lower part of the Menilite Formation (Oligocene) in the northern part of the Skole Nappe, Polish Carpathians are characterized. In the study area, the sediments were deposited in the Rzeszów and Łańcut channel zones running from the northern margin of the basin. The most frequent heavy minerals in the sandstones examined include zircon, tourmaline, rutile, staurolite, kyanite and garnet. Single grains of andalusite, sillimanite, apatite, epidote, brookite and chrome spinel occur in some samples. The very small content of apatite is related to long, continental weathering in the source area, which is referred to the Paleozoic sedimentary cover of the Małopolska Block and the easternmost part of the Upper Silesian Block. Different preservation states, morphology, degree of roundness and colour varieties suggest that the heavy minerals studied derive from various petrographic types including metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks. However, the Carboniferous and Permian conglomerates and sandstones seem to be the most probable source rocks.

The origin of the olistostromes at the front of the Ukrainian Carpathian orogen is related to Miocene synsedimentary thrust movements of the Carpathian accretionary prism and to erosion of uplifted areas of the Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe in the front of the accretionary prism. There are two olistostrome complexes. The first is the Lower Miocene Polyanytsya-Vorotyshcha Olistostrome with clasts of molasse and flysch deposits formed in a piggy-back basin on the inner part of the Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe at the top of the accretionary wedge. This olistostrome is associated with the Sloboda Conglomerate derived from the fore-bulge at the foreland of the Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe. The second one is the Middle Miocene Lanchyn Olistostrome with olistoliths of strongly deformed molasse deposits. These olistoliths were slid from the uplifted front of the Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe. The Lanchyn Olistostrome was deposited at front of this nappe in a foredeep basin.

Opis:
The work is devoted to the rectangular sharp-crested weir calculation methods improvement. This can be realized by using mathematical model developed on energy and momentum conservation principles. In order to get energy conservation equation within sharp-crested weir we have to know weir head losses. This article presents theoretical and experimental investigations of the sharp-crested weir head losses. The height of the weir plate pw and weir head H are estimated as main operating factors that determine hydraulic weir outbound parameters: threshold depth h and the specific weir flow q. The flow moving over sharp-crested weir suffers sudden vertical contraction and transforms from the uniform flow to a jet. Mentioned above, causes sharp-crested weir head losses. To determine these losses, we propose to use Hind’s formula that describes similar contraction losses in the channel. Experimental investigations proved Hind’s formula application adequacy to evaluate these losses. Sharpcrested weir energy conservation equation that includes head losses is determined. Graphs set out in the article disclose the influence of the main operating factors and their ratio on the relative head losses.

The area studied, known as the Małe (Little) Pieniny Mts., belongs to the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB), a suture zone that separates the Central Carpathians from the Outer Carpathian accretionary wedge. Along its northern boundary the PKB is separated from the Paleogene to Early Miocene flysch deposits of the Magura Nappe by a narrow, strongly deformed belt belonging to the Grajcarek tectonic Unit. This unit is composed of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleocene pelagic and flysch deposits. The Klippen units of the PKB are represented by Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous carbonate deposits overlain by Upper Cretaceous variegated marls and flysch deposits. We describe geological and biostratigraphic evidence concerning the palaeogeographic, stratigraphic and structural relationships between the Pieniny Klippen Belt and the Magura Nappe, that significantly modify previously held views on the evolution of the Małe Pieniny Mts. and the Polish sector of the PKB.

In the Ukrainian part of the Silesian Nappe (Outer Carpathians, Uzh River Basin) the exotic clast-bearing Uzhok Olistostrome (up to 60 m thick) occurs within the Oligocene Krosno Formation and underlies the Pikui Sandstone (Otryt Sandstone in Poland). The Uzhok Olistostrome consists of debris/grain/mud flow deposits with clasts of schist and bioclastic limestone. These deposits contain redeposited pelagic sediments with planktonic foraminifers including Parogloborotalia pseudocontinuosa (Jenkins), Ciperoella ciperoensis (Bolli), Globoturborotalita woodi (Jenkins), Chiloguembelina adriatica Premec Fucek, Hernitz Kucenjak and Huber. The age of the Uzhok Olistostrome based on planktonic foraminifers correlates with the middle Oligocene within the middle O2–O5 zones. The source area for the Uzhok Olistostrome and Pikui Sandstone was a mid-Oligocene intrabasinal palaeouplift (the Pikui Ridge) interpreted as the fore-bulge located in the Silesian Sub-basin ahead the emerging Outer Carpathian accretionary prism (including the Dukla Nappe and other West Carpathian inner flysch nappes).

The sedimentation of Hieroglyphic beds of the Silesian Nappe took place between the Lower and Middle Eocene and Upper Eocene within the Carpathian Silesian Basin. These beds are represented by thin-bedded flysch containing – at various stratigraphic positions – sandstone-less complexes with variegated shales and bentonite laminae developed in conditions of calm sedimentation with a limited supply of material from the land. The profiles of Hieroglyphic beds of the Silesian Nappe are diversely developed. Their variability and borderline sequences, transitory into overlying and underlying divisions, are presented. In the Ypressian, during the sedimentation of Hieroglyphic beds, foraminiferal associations with numerous small sized Trochammina developed, which formed in the Silesian Basin after the PETM crisis. Since the Lutetian, in slightly more favourable conditions, more differentiated associations have occurred, with Reticulophragmium amplectens (Grzybowski), Ammodiscus (Dolgenia) latus (Grzybowski), and Reticulophragmium gerochi Neagu et al., which preferred cool waters, being index fossils for stratigraphy. Hieroglyphic beds developed during an interval of the gradually cooling climate. The gradual decrease in temperature stimulated the transfer of species: in the Eocene associations of Hieroglyphic beds a number of thermophilous forms, whose optimum of development came in the Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene, disappeared whereas new species appeared which prefer cold waters commonly occurring in boreal basins. The deep restructuring of foraminiferal assemblages took place in the Priabonian, when massive numbers of calcareous benthonic and planktonic forms occurred.

Heavy mineral assemblages of the Upper Cretaceous-Palaeocene sandstones of the Polish part of the Magura Nappe and the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB) were studied. They consist mainly of stable minerals, such as zircon, tourmaline and rutile, but in many assemblages significant amounts of garnets are also present. To describe the provenance of the main heavy mineral groups their chemical composition was analysed. This article deals with the garnets group. Heavy minerals, including garnets, were derived to the Magura Basin from two opposite source areas: the north-west (northern) and the south-east. In the chemical composition of the analysed garnets, FeO and the almandine molecule are definitely dominant, but garnets with a raised MgO and pyrope molecule content were also found. Proportions among the main elements occurring in garnets indicate that they were formed under low- to medium grade metamorphic conditions in the southeastern source area, and medium- to high-grade conditions in the northern one.

In the lithostratigraphic section of a sedimentary sequence of the Silesian Nappe in the area of Rożnów Lake, the strata that occur above the Ciężkowice sandstone and below the Globigerina marls are represented by a relatively thin unit informally named the Hieroglyphic beds and a succeeding thick complex of so-called Green shales. The Hieroglyphic beds, deposited over a short time interval during the Lutetian time (Reticulophragmium amplectens zone), are followed by the Green shales that were deposited from the Lutetian to the Priabonian (Reticulophrgamium amplectens, Ammodisus latus, Reticulophragmium rotundidorstum zones). This work describes the foraminiferal assemblages, on the basis of which, the age of the Green shales was established that in the area of Rożnów Lake. Deposition of the Green shale unit started in the Lutetian, while in other regions of the Silesian Basin it is documented from the Priabonian. The upper boundary of the Green shales is isochronous and defined by the base of the calcareous horizon of a specific type of marls known as the Globigerina marls.

To optimize exploration for new hydrocarbon accumulations in the Polish Outer Carpathians, it is necessary to concentrate attention on identification of hydrocarbon accumulations of the “shale-gas” type. Results of recently completed analysis suggested new such possible targets in the Magura Basin, preserved in the Outer Carpathian Magura Nappe. Analysis of the preliminary results of paleoenvironmental and geochemical studies of these shales is the subject of this paper. Micropaleontological and geochemical study was conducted on the 300 m thick Świątkowa Member, the uppermost part of the Ropianka Formation located in the external, northernmost Siary Zone. This member is composed of thin- and medium-bedded sandstones interbedded by green, brown, black and dark-gray shales. Poor and changeable oxygenation is reflected in the composition of foraminiferal assemblages. A negative correlation between the TOC content and numbers and diversity of foraminifera is observed. The paleogeographic position and paleoenvironment assessment indicates that the Siary Zone fulfills certain conditions for organic productivity and preservation during the deposition of the Ropianka Formation.

W budowie geologicznej terenu, który rozciąga się wzdłuż doliny Skawy pomiędzy Suchą Beskidzką a Świnną Porębą, biorą udział górnokredowe i paleogeńskie utwory płaszczowiny śląskiej i płaszczowiny magurskiej. Serię śląską tworzą tu środkowe i górne warstwy godulskie, warstwy istebniańskie, pstre łupki eoceńskie i piaskowce ciężkowickie oraz warstwy hieroglifowe, menilitowe i krośnieńskie. W tych ostatnich zaobserwowano spływy typu derbis-flow z otoczakami skał egzotycznych i wielkimi olistolitami. Płaszczowina magurska jest zbudowana z sukcesji osadowej typowej dla tzw. podjednostki Siar. Autorzy zaproponowali dla jej jednostek litostratygraficznych formalizację nazw. Zgodnie z zaproponowaną formalizacją w jej sukcesji osadowej wyróżnia się formację z Jaworzynki (warstwy ropianieckie) z ogniwami łupków z Gołyni i piaskowców z Mutnego w paleoceńskiej części profilu, formację z Łabowej z ogniwami piaskowców z Żurawnicy i ze Skawiec, formację beloweską oraz formację makowską z ogniwem łupków zembrzyckich, piaskowców wątkowskich i łupków budzowskich. Utwory płaszczowin śląskiej i magurskiej są sfałdowane, a w płaszczowinie magurskiej można wyróżnić kilka łusek i podłużnych zluźnień. Utwory obu tych jednostek pocięte są systemem uskoków poprzecznych, a u czoła nasunięcia płaszczowiny magurskiej część dyslokacji jest przejęta od płaszczowiny śląskiej. Płaszczowina ta posiada swój niezależny system uskoków.
Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene rocks of the Silesian and Magura Nappes build up the complex structure of the investigated area, which is stretching along the Skawa River valley between Sucha Beskidzka and Świnna Poręba. Middle and Upper Godula Beds, Istebna Beds, Eocene red shales and Ciężkowice Sandstone as well as Hieroglyphic, Menilite and Krosno Beds form the Silesian Succession. The debris-flow deposits with exotic rocks pebbles and large olistolites were observed within the Krosno Beds. The sedimentary succession is typical for the Siary sub-unit from the Magura Nappe. The present authors proposed the formal lithostratigraphic names for this unit. According to this formalization the following lithostratigraphic units have been distinguished within the Siary succession: Jaworzynka Formation (Ropianka Beds) with Gołynia Shale member and Mutne Sandstone Member within the Paleocene part of profile, Łabowa Formation with the Żurawnica Sandstone Member, the Skawce Sandstone Member, Beloveza Formation, and Maków Beskid Formation with Zembrzyce Shale Member, Wątkowa Sandstone Member and Budzów Shale Member. The Silesian and Magura Nappes rocks are strongly folded; within the Magura Nappes several scales and longitudinal shear zones have been distinguished. The formations of both units are cut by the transversal fault systems of The Magura Nappe has the independent fault systems, some of its dislocations have been acquired, however, from the Silesian Nappe.

Turbiditic silty and sandy intercalations in the Turonian Variegated Shale from the Silesian Nappe (Polish Outer Carpathians) contain numerous sponge spicules among siliciclastic fine-grained particles. The highest amount of spicule admixture is nearly 50%. In such layers, they create spiculitic sublitharenite microfacies. These sponge spicules contain forms belonging mostly to the Lithistida group (97% of morphotypes), with a small admixture of spicules from the Hexactinellidae group. Tetraclones with a high content of different types of triaenes dominate among desmas, what indicates the dominance of sponges from subfamily Tetracladina. The preservation state of spicules is generally poor. The Variegated Shale deposits that contain the sponge spicules were accumulated in a deep sea basin, below the calcium compensation depth. Most probably, the spicules were derived from loose material accumulated earlier in various parts of the basin slopes, from which they were exhumed and again redeposited by turbidity currents during the Turonian times.

The numerous landslides which have developed in the mostly Cretaceous to Eocene turbiditic rocks of the Silesian Beskid are genetically and geometrically controlled by bedrock structural features, the Biała Wisełka Landslide Complex being no exception. Its location is in the headwater area of the Wisła River, on the slopes of Mt. Barania Góra (1220 m a.s.l.). The bedrock is represented by flysch strata of the Silesian Nappe (Outer Carpathian Fold-and-Thrust Belt), or, more specifically, the Upper Cretaceous turbiditic Upper Godula and Lower Istebna Beds of the Godula Thrust Sheet. The research work consisted in their mapping and structural analysis, facilitated by the use of a high-resolution digital elevation model based on LiDAR data. A comparative analysis enabled the determination of the relationships between landslides and the bedrock structure. The study results point to significant roles being played by the joint network, fault systems, the structural arrangement and the lithology of rock strata in the initiation and evolution of the studied landslide complex. An additional result of the methods applied methods was the identification and characterization of previously unknown fault zones in the study area.

The area of investigation is situated close to the contact zone between the Pieniny Klippen Belt, Krynica Subunit of the Magura Nappe and the Neogene strata of the Orava–Nowy Targ Intramontane Basin (southern Poland). In the area studied, marine deposits of the Stare Bystre Formation outcrop at the surface where they emerge from beneath freshwater and terrestrial Neogene and Quaternary deposits. Nannofossil assemblages from all samples are strongly dominated by reworked species. The Early Miocene age (NN2) of the Stare Bystre Formation has been determined on the base of the first occurrence of Sphenolithus disbelemnos after Shackleton et al. (2000). During the Late Oligocene (NP25/NN1), the frontal part of Magura Nappe was thrust northwards on to the terminal Krosno flysch basin. The northwards thrusting of the Magura Nappe was accompanied by the formation of the piggy-back basin on the Magura Nappe, filled with the synrorogenic turbidites belonging to the Zawada, Kremná and Stare Bystre formations (NN2).

In the Nowy Sącz area Early Miocene marine deposits have been discovered in the southern part of the Rača Subunit, and at the front of the Bystrica Subunit of the Magura Nappe. These deposits belong to the Zawada Formation, which is represented by medium- to thick-bedded glauconitic sandstones with intercalations of thick-bedded marls and marly claystones. The formation is at least 550 m thick. Calcareous nannofossils show the age of the formation to be Early Burdigalian (NN1-2-3 biozones). Due to a lack of exposures the relationship between the deposits of the Malcov and the Zawada formations is not yet clear. However, comparing the youngest age of the Malcov Formation in the Nowy Sącz I borehole (NP 25) with the age of the Zawada Formation suggests sedimentary continuity transition between these formations.

A palynological study of uppermost Maastrichtian to Lower Paleocene depos i ts from a stratigraphic section of the Vrancea Nappe (Eastern Carpathians), reveals the presence of diverse and well-preserved dinoflagellate cyst assemblages. The biostratigraphic interpretation of these dinocyst assemblages suggests that (1) the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary lies within a ~8 m thick sedimentary interval, between the Lepşa Formation (uppermost Maastrichtian) and Putna-Piatra Uscată Formation (Lower Danian), based on the Last Appearance Datum of latest Maastrichtian markers such as Pterodinium cretaceum and Palynodinium cf. grallator and on the First Appearance Datum of Danian markers such as Senoniasphaera inornata, Xenicodinium lubricum, Tectatodinium rugulatum and Eisenackia circumtabulata, and (2) a discontinuity between the two formations. The palynofacies analysis from this geological section indicates an abundance of continental organic matter (mainly opaque phytoclasts), deposited in a distal setting of the sedimentary basin. The occurtences in the palynological assemblage of some oceanic dinocyst taxa such as Impagidinium and Pterodinium suggest the same depositional environment for the geological formations analysed.

The upper part of the Lower Miocene Sloboda Conglomerate, a 250–1400 m thick unit, was deposited mainly on an alluvial fan and fan delta during the early stages of Carpathian Foredeep development. During of the Old Styrian overthrust movements of the Carpathian orogen, a forebulge was formed, which supplied clasts to the conglomerate. The clasts are dominated by Late Proterozoic–Early Cambrian phyllites, while Paleozoic carbonates are common, and Mesozoic and other rocks are rare. The source area formed mainly by a prolongation of the Małopolska Massif that was involved in the forebulge; this was located close to a palaeovalley cut into Mesozoic and Paleozoic rocks, buried under younger strata. Additional material was derived from the advancing front of the Carpathian Flysch nappes.

Eocene thin-bedded flysch, widespread in the Alpine Tethys ocean, is present within the Magura Nappe, the largest Outer Carpathian unit in Poland and Slovakia. Thin-bedded flysch sedimentation accompanied by hemipelagic shales took place accross the entire Magura Basin during Eocene times. The lithostratigraphic position of these deposits has been a subject of considerable discussion. Different names, such as the Hieroglyphic Beds, Hieroglyphic Formation, Łabowa Shale Formation, Grzechynia Sandstones and Beloveža Beds, Beloveža Formation have been used in the Outer Carpathians literature. We show a striking resemblance of the Beloveža Beds (Formation) from its type locality to the Hieroglyphic Beds from the Beskid Wysoki area and to typical Beloveža Beds from the Hańczowa Mts. We propose to the name Beloveža Formation should be applied to thin-bedded flysch within both Bystrica and Rača units of Magura Nappe and the name Hieroglyphic Formation should be restricted to the Skole Unit. The original type locality in Beloveža near Bardejov in Slovakia is selected as type section of the Beloveža Formation

Garnet in heavy-mineral assemblages, occurring in sandstones of the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Skole Nappe, is present as first-cycle and poly-cycle grains, derived from a proximal source, remote areas and/or from sedimentary rocks of the Skole Basin foreland. The garnets in the formations are compositionally similar, suggesting an origin from the same source rocks. Relatively large amounts of garnet, represented by euhedral or slightly rounded, weakly etched or unetched almandine and spessartine-almandine garnet, and minor pyrope-enriched almandine, were derived directly from a source close to the Skole Basin. These garnets are from sediments, metamorphosed at low- to medium-grade conditions (such as mica-schists, gneisses) and perhaps also granitic bodies. Rounded and variously etched garnets, especially high pyrope-almandine and pyrope-almandine-grossular varieties, but also partly almandine-dominated varieties, are suggested to have been derived from distant sources, such as sedimentary rocks of the Upper Silesian and Małopolska blocks. Rocks, forming uplifted parts of the crystalline basement of Brunovistulicum and/or crystalline domains of the Bohemian Massif, could have been protoliths for part of the almandine-dominated garnet population, whereas pyrope-grossular-almandine garnets may originate from the granulitic, eclogitic or metabasic rocks of the Bohemian Massif. The study shows that analyses of garnet composition, combined with observations on grain textural features and data on the lithology of clasts and pebbles, can permit the determination of sources for different garnet varieties in mixed-provenance populations.

The structure of the Magura Nappe, within the zone of maximal bending of the Western Outer Carpathians, is described; investigations were concentrated mainly in the Beskid Wyspowy Subunit. A zone, bounded to the north and south by duplexes, comprises large characteristic synclines (Snieznica, Lubogoszcz, Szczebel, Klimas, Lopien, Cwilin, Lubon Wielki). These appear on maps as isolated "island mountains", in the Beskid Wyspowy Subunit. These synclines contrast strongly with the belt-like distribution of regional folds to the west and east of the area. The synclinal massifs developed gradually. Fold belts several hundred metres long developed in the first phase of overthrusting of the Magura Nappe, with horizontal N-S compression dominant. Thrusts separating the individual subunits developed when the face of the overthrusting Magura Nappe stopped and the stress continued to push its southern parts forwards. The next phase, with continuing horizontal N-S stress included the development of strike-slip faults and the bending of the Carpathian Arc, resulting in extension of this part of the orogen. The syncline zone within the Beskid Wyspowy Subunit underwent disintegration and particular blocks became independent. Rotation of blocks with individual synclines took place along fault zones. In the part of the Polish Outer Carpathians investigated this stage is also characterised by a change of compression from N-S to NNE-SSW. Due to the uplift of this part of the Carpathians, strike-slip faults changed into dip-slip faults in the terminal part of this phase. reconstruction.

The provenance and diagenesis of the siliciclastic and hemipelagic sediments of three lithostratigraphic units: Lhoty Formation, Barnasiówka Radiolarian Shale Formation (BRSF) and Variegated Shales from Lancko- rona area, Polish Outer Carpathians, was approached by means of petrological and geochemical analysis of the representative samples. Data show that studied succession was mainly derived from two sources: 1. a dominant terrigenous fine-grained components have affinity with average upper continental crust (basing on mineral detritus, K2O/Rb ratio and Y/Ni vs. Cr/V ratios) and 2. biogenic siliceous material and macerals. Composition varies up section and accounts for changes in the detrital supply due to eustatic sea-level changes. Organic petrology shows presence of organic detritus within the Lhoty Fm and dominance of marine-derived macerals in the BRSF. Chemical and petrological features imply a progressive deepening of the basin. The studied succession was diagenetically altered (e.g. coalification of bituminite, illitisation of smectite and pyritisation).

Krynica Spa is situated in the southern part of the Magura Nappe, at the boundary between the Bystrica and Krynica subunits. The Bystrica succession is composed of the Middle to Upper Eocene strata of the Magura Formation, while the Krynica succession is built up of the Palaeocene through Middle Eocene strata that belong to the Szczawnica, Zarzecze and Magura formations. The Bystrica and Krynica subunits contact along a sub-vertical, NE-dipping fault. In the study area, several NE-trending transversal faults cut both the Bystrica and Krynica subunits into several blocks. The Krynica area is seismically active, as shown by the most recent, moderate- intensity earthquakes which occurred in 1992-1993, of epicentres situated NE of Krynica Spa. The region is rich in natural mineral water springs which are confined to a tectonic block bounded by the Tylicz and Krynica faults.
Uzdrowisko Krynica jest usytuowane w południowo-wschodniej części płaszczowiny magurskiej na styku podjednostki (bystrzyckiej) i krynickiej (Fig. 1). W badanej przez nas zlewni Kryniczanki utwory strefy bystrzyckiej występują jedynie fragmentarycznie, w NE części obszaru badań. Do strefy bystrzyckiej (sądeckiej) należą wyłącznie utwory formacji magurskiej wieku środkowo-późnoeoceńskiego, o łącznej miąższości stratygraficznej 1150– 1250 m. Są to: ogniwo z Maszkowic (piaskowce gruboławicowe z przeławiceniami margli łąckich), ogniwo łupków z Mniszka (łupki pstre i cienkoławicowy flisz) oraz ogniwo piaskowców popradzkich ("piaskowce zuberowskie"). Strefa krynicka reprezentowana jest przez paleoceńsko-środkowo-eoceńskie utwory formacji szczawnickiej (cienko- i średnioławicowy flisz), zarzeckiej (cienkoławicowy flisz z ogniwem piaskowców krynickich) oraz magurskiej (piaskowce gruboławicowe). Niepełna miąższość utworów strefy krynickiej wynosi co najmniej 1300 m. Podjednostki bystrzycka (sądecka) oraz krynicka kontaktują ze sobą wzdłuż pionowego lub niemal pionowego, zapadającego na NE uskoku, zwanego "dyslokacją krynicką". Uskoki poprzeczne o przebiegu NE–SW dzielą obie podjednostki na kilka bloków. Między Czarnym Potokiem a Słotwinami wąski półrów tektoniczny towarzyszy uskokowi słotwińskiemu. W okolicach Krynicy notowane były w latach 1992–1993 wstrząsy sejsmiczne. Epicentra tych wstrząsów grupują się wzdłuż uskoków poprzecznych o orientacji NW–SW oraz dyslokacji krynickiej.

The study focused on the chemistry of detrital garnet and tourmaline from sediments of the Boryslav and Kliva Sandstone types in the Oligocene part of the Menilite Formation of the Skole Nappe (Western Outer Carpathians, Poland), with regard to provenance. Almandine and almandine-pyrope compositional varieties are the most common garnets, with minor almandine-pyrope-grossular garnet. Scarce garnet grains, with grossular and spessartine as the dominant end-members, are also present. The tourmaline belongs to the alkali tourmaline principal group and represents the schörl-dravite series. The detrital garnet and tourmaline display strong, compositional similarities to minerals, occurring in igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Bohemian Massif, as well as to detrital grains, deposited within the internal basins of the massif. This suggests that the primary rocks for the garnet and tourmaline may be crystalline complexes of the Bohemian Massif. However, other uplifted areas, similar to the complexes of the Bohemian Massif, cannot be ruled out. Such hypothetical areas could be located in the northern foreland of the Carpathian basins. Euhedral tourmaline and other minerals, occurring in the heavy- mineral assemblages studied, most probably were derived from eroded and presently not exposed, crystalline complexes, originally situated in the Skole Basin foreland or within the basin.

The present authors investigated the Paleogene deposits of the internal zone of the Magura Basin known as the Krynica Subunit or Krynica zone in Poland. These deposits crop out in the peri-Pieniny zone, in the area between Szczawnica and Krościenko. The oldest flysch deposits belong to the Paleocene - Lower Eocene Szczawnica Formation. This formation is covered by thin-bedded turbidites of the Eocene Zarzecze Formation locally with intercalations of the thick-bedded sandstones of the Krynica Member and Łęcko-type marls. The youngest rocks in this area belong to the Eocene-Oligocene Magura Formation. The Zarzecze Formation occupies a large part of the Krynica zone of the Magura Nappe border structure. Some deposits previously distinguished as the Szczawnica Formation were transferred to the Zarzecze Formation. The foraminiferal assemblages confirm the Eocene age of these deposits.

For the first time is here documented the presence of Lower Toarcian black shales in the lower portion of the Calcari e marne a Posidonia (Posidonia Marls auctt.) belonging to the Tuscan Nappe. It consists of alternations of 30 cm to 5 m thick black laminated marlstone and marly claystone, with TOC values ranging from 0.43% to 2.49%. Based on calcareous nannofossils, the basal portion of the Calcari e marne a Posidonia spans the Lotharingius hauffii to Carinolithus superbus zones, and the organic-rich interval lies within the Carinolithus superbus Zone.

Detrital heavy minerals separated from the Malcov Fm. deposits (Magura Nappe) indicate their source rocks and areas. The heavy mineral assemblages predominantly consist of garnet, zircon, tourmaline, rutile and Cr-spinel. EPMA analyses reveal a few groups of garnets: zoned and unzoned Grs almandines, Prp-Sps almandines, unzoned Prp almandines, almandines, Sps almandines and rare zoned spessartine grains (~85 mol% Sps). The garnet composition indicates that gneisses, mica schists, amphibolites and granites were their main source rocks, but low-grade metapelites with Mn mineralisation probably contributed as well. The detrital dravitic tourmalines were mostly derived from paragneisses and mica schists. Cr-spinel indicates a volcanic source. Based on heavy mineral assemblages, coupled with palaeoflow analysis, we conclude that the Marmarosh Massif and Fore-Marmarosh Suture are the most probable source areas. Aditionally, the Malcov sedimentary basin was supplied by material from the crystalline complexes of the Tisza Mega-Unit and Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB). The bulk of the clastic deposits comprise classical turbidites. These lithofacies were deposited from either turbidity currents or from concentrated density flows. The palaeoflow record is varied and highlights the contribution of sedimentary material from several directions and/or diversion of gravity currents from the main flow direction (SE–NW). The marginal parts of the Malcov sub-basins were formed of deformed and uplifted older formations of surrounding units of the Magura Nappe and PKB (submerged ridges). Older (Late Cretaceous to Eocene) flysch sediments may have been redeposited from these ridges to neighbouring sub-basins in a transverse direction (NE–SW).

Foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton from the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) transition in the Hyżne section (Outer Carpathians, south-eastern Poland) show a relatively complete biostratigraphic record. Despite the absence of the Pα Zone in turbiditic deposits of the Polish Carpathians, the planktonic foraminiferal zones of the Late Cretaceous-Early Paleogene interval are well defined, including (1) the late Maastrichtian Abathomphalus mayaroensis Zone and its equivalents, (2) the earliest Danian Guembelitria cretacea second bloom Zone (P0 Zone), and (3) the top of the early Danian Parasubbotina cf. pseudobulloides (P1a) Zone. The foraminiferal events recorded in the studied section at the K-Pg transition are stratigraphically important. They include: (1) the interval with A. mayaroensis occurrence, (2) the interval with gradual disappearance of planktonic foraminifera from the most complex K-strategy forms, through the less specialized species to the large Heterohelicidae turnovers, and (3) the G. cretacea first and second blooms. Furthermore, the bloom of the opportunistic, benthic Bolivinita sp., the size reduction event, and the dissolution of the tests of the planktonic foraminifera are recorded. The K-Pg interval bioevents can be useful for better stratigraphic resolution of the flysch deposits of the Outer Carpathians. The nannoplankton event is represented by the appearance of Cruciplacolithus primus, which marks the onset of the return to more stable environmental conditions after the perturbations at the K-Pg boundary. The K-Pg boundary occurs within dark grey marly mudstones, above the upper boundary of the G. cretacea first bloom, and above the highest occurrence of the agglutinated foraminifera Goesella rugosa, at the top of the nannofossil CC 26 Zone, and below the deep-water agglutinated foraminifera (DWAF) dominance. The foraminiferal assemblages derive from different bathymetric zones corresponding to (1) the upper bathyal zone in the late Campanian (nannoplankton CC 22 Zone) and early late Maastrichtian (A. mayaroensis Zone), (2) the shelf margin in the latest late Maastrichtian (CC 26 nannoplankton Zone, G. cretacea first bloom), (3) the shelf margin in the earliest Danian (G. cretacea second bloom, Np1/2 Zone), and (4) the middle-lower bathyal depth, below a local foraminiferal lysocline and above CCD, in the latest early Danian (P. pseudobulloides Zone). As the foraminifera could have been redeposited by turbiditic currents, they do not necessarily show real bathymetric changes in the area of deposition. Such changes have not been observed in sedimentary features of the studied deposits. Foraminiferal and nannoplankton assemblages are typical of the “transitional zone” between the Tethyan and Boreal domains.

The Holovnia Siliceous Marls represent carbonate turbidites interbedded with non-calcareous pelagic/hemipelagic shales. This study reports on bioturbation pattern, trace fossil assemblage and distribution of bioturbation structures, i.e. structures resulting from the life activity of organisms in general, in the succession exposed in the village of Rybotycze. 20 ichnospecies were identified, with one new ichnogenus (Squamichnus) and one new species (Squamichnus acinaceformis). The ichnofossils represent nearly exclusively fodinichnia produced close to the seafloor, below calcite compensation depth. Shallow location of anoxic pore waters is indicated to be responsible for relatively shallow bioturbation depth whereas variability in frequency of turbidite sedimentation and petrographic composition of turbidites is suggested as the chief control on the vertical distribution of the bioturbation structures in the succession.

Well preserved Late Cretaceous–Palaeogene planktonic and benthic foraminiferal assemblages were studied in the Zabratówka section of the Ropianka Formation in the Skole Nappe. The Racemiguembelina fructicosa and Abathomphalus mayaroensis standard foraminiferal biozones were distinguished. The K-T boundary was recognized within the interval between samples ZB10B–ZB9A, mainly composed of marly mudstones, interlayered with thin-bedded sandstones, and is characterized by the disappearance of planktonic taxa and an abundance of agglutinated species. Foraminiferal assemblages, collected from the turbiditic flysch-type sediments, indicate a primary depositional environment on the outer shelf to the upper part of the continental slope, with shallowing during the Maastrichtian in the part of the Skole Basin studied. The foraminiferids correspond to the assemblages of a palaeobiogeographical “transition” zone, located between the Boreal and Tethyan domains.

The provenance and diagenesis of the siliciclastic and hemipelagic sediments of three lithostratigraphic units: Lhoty Formation, Barnasiówka Radiolarian Shale Formation (BRSF) and Variegated Shales from Lancko- rona area, Polish Outer Carpathians, was approached by means of petrological and geochemical analysis of the representative samples. Data show that studied succession was mainly derived from two sources: 1. a dominant terrigenous fine-grained components have affinity with average upper continental crust (basing on mineral detritus, K2O/Rb ratio and Y/Ni vs. Cr/V ratios) and 2. biogenic siliceous material and macerals. Composition varies up section and accounts for changes in the detrital supply due to eustatic sea-evel changes. Organic petrology shows presence of organic detritus within the Lhoty Fm and dominance of marine-derived macerals in the BRSF. Chemical and petrological features imply a progressive deepening of the basin. The studied succession was diagenetically altered (e.g. coalification of bituminite, illitisation of smectite and pyritisation).

The Outer Carpathians are known for a few sections, where transitions from the Upper Cretaceous to the Palaeogene, including the K-Pg boundary interval, were described. One of them, the Bąkowiec section in the Skole Nappe, was examined with reference to the record of biostratigraphy and palaeoenvironmental changes, mainly based on the analysis of calcareous nannofossil assemblages. This study shows no evidence for the K-Pg boundary; however, the presence of the nannofossil species Micula prinsii, marking the topmost Maastrichtian UC20dTP Zone, was noted. The appearance of this low-latitude taxon and relevant changes in the composition of nannofossil assemblages indicate an influx of Tethyan warm water into the northern Carpathian basins during the latest Maastrichtian, shortly before the K-Pg boundary event. Therefore, the authors infer that the upper part of the Bąkowiec section recorded the latest Maastrichtian warming of climate, probably triggered by Deccan volcanic activity.

The Albian and Cenomanian marine sediments of the Silesian and Tatric basins in the Carpathian realm of the Western Tethys contain ferric and ferromanganese oxyhydroxides, visible macroscopically as brown stainings. They coat calcareous bioclasts and mineral clasts, fill pore spaces, or locally form continuous, parallel microlayers, tens of micrometers thick. Light-microscope (LM) and scanning-electron-microscope (SEM) obser- vations show that the coatings contain elongated capsules, approximately 3–5 µm across and enriched in iron and manganese, which may be remnants of the original sheaths of iron-related bacteria (IRB). Moreover, the ferric and ferromanganese staining observed under LM is similar to bacterial structures, resembling the sheaths, filaments and rods formed by present-day bacteria of the Sphaerotilus–Leptothrix group. All of the possible bacteria-like structures are well preserved owing to processes of early diagenetic cementation. If the observed structures are fossil IRB, these organisms could have played an important role in iron and manganese accumulation on the sea floor during Albian–Cenomanian time. The most plausible source of metals for bacterial concentration in the Silesian Basin might have been submarine low-temperature hydrothermal vents, as previously was hypothesized for Cenomanian–Turonian deposits on the basis of geochemical indices.

The results of semi-quantitative and qualitative studies of nannofossil assemblages in dark to light grey, rhythmically bedded, calcareous mudstones of the Upper Cieszyn Beds, Silesian Nappe of the Outer Carpathians are presented. The vertical variation in the carbonate content of these mudstones and changes in the composition of nannofossil assemblages, as well as the Shannon diversity index (SI), result from humid-arid climate changes, driving the trophic conditions of surface waters and nannoplankton biocalcification. These changes were control- led by the variable influences of both the Tethyan and Boreal provinces. The light grey mudstones were deposited during the dominance of warm waters from the Tethyan realm and some nannoconids, typical of the warm, stratified water of lower palaeolatitudes, occur here. The dark grey mudstones represent influences of the Boreal province, indicated by the appearance of Crucibiscutum sp. and a generally higher biodiversity demonstrated by SI. Climatic changes affected the stratification of surface water, expressed also by different linear fits for pairs of SI, Watznaueria barnesiae and Rhagodiscus asper. On the basis of the presence of Eiffellithus striatus, E. windii and signals of both Tethyan and Boreal influences. the section studied represents the uppermost Valanginian– lowermost Hauterivian boundary interval, i.e., the upper part of the BC5/BC6 nannofossil zones, related to the furcillata-radiatus ammonite zones.

The Pieniny Klippen Belt in Poland marks the Central Carpathian-North European plate suture zone. The strictly tectonic present-day confines of the Pieniny Klippen Belt are characterized as (sub)vertical faults and shear zones. A strong reduction in the space of the original sedimentary basins took place. The strike-slip-bounded tectonic blocks, thrust units, toe-thrusts and olistostromes are mixed together, resulting in the present-day mélange character where individual tectonic units are difficult to distinguish. The sedimentary rocks of the Pieniny Klippen Belt were deposited in the paleogeographic realm known as the Alpine Tethys that was divided into two basins separated by the Czorsztyn Ridge. The accretionary prism formed in front of the advancing Alcapa (Central Carpathians) terrane had overridden the Czorsztyn Ridge during the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene. The destruction of the Czorsztyn Ridge supplied huge amounts of coarse-clastic material, including olistoliths, into the Magura Basin during the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene. The rotation of the Alcapa caused the strike-slip motions which led to the deformation of the previously created nappes and development of the flower structure. Two parallel faults delineate the southern and northern limits of the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The stops in Sromowce (Macelowa and Sobczański Gorge area) allow the observation of the southern marginal zone of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, the overturned position of the rotated counterclockwise deformed rock as well as the diapiric uplift of the Pieniny rocks in a transpressional strike-slip regime. The Zawiasy (Krościenko area) stop is located in the northern marginal zone (Hulina Unit) of the Pieniny Klippen Belt along the major dextral strike-slip Dunajec Fault.

Tourmaline populations studied from the Campanian-Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Polish Carpathians, represent a mixture of first-cycle and polycyclic grains. The tourmalines of the deposits studied display very strong resemblance in terms of optical features and chemical composition. They belong mostly to the schorl-dravite series with a minor contribution of tourmalines of foititic or Mg-foititic composition. Euhedral tourmalines originated from metasedimentary rocks, while the rounded grains crystallised in Li-poorgranitic rocks or in pegmatites, Al-poor and Al-rich metasedimentary rocks. Most of the tourmalines studied crystallised during a single igneous or metamorphic event. However, tourmal ines form ng in evolving chemical conditions as well as polymetamorphic grains (having a metamorphic detrital core and metamorphic overgrowths) are also present. The chemical composition of the metamorphic tourmalines studied indicates theirformation in medium-grade metamorphic conditions. This is supported by the crystallisation temperature of the garnet-biotite inclusion present in one of rounded metamorphic tourma l ines from the Ropianka Formation. The euhedral grains derive from metasediments, directly from a massif located close to the Skole Basin. The scarcity of euhedral grains in the tourmaline populations studied suggests that their source rocks were poor in these minerals. The direct sources of rounded tourmalines (most probably polycyclic grains), may have been Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of the Skole Basin foreland or crystalline rocks of remote source areas. The initial igneous and metamorphic host rocks of the tourma l ines may have been crystall ine domains of the Bohemian Massif and/or the crystalline basement of Brunovistulicum.

Conventional and high-resolution analyses of heavy minerals from the gravity flow-deposited sandstones of the Campanian–Maastrichtian interval of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous–Paleocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Polish Carpathians display similar compositions in terms of mineral species. Zircon, tourmaline, rutile, garnet, staurolite and kyanite belong to the main constituents in both formations. Apatite is common in the Ropianka Fm., while the Menilite Fm. almost lacks this mineral. Furthermore, individual hornblende grains were found in the Ropianka Fm., while andalusite is present only in the Menilite Fm. The Ropianka Fm. is relatively richer in zircon, tourmaline, garnet and apatite, while the Menilite Fm. contains more staurolite and kyanite. Zircon and tourmaline colour and morphological varieties are similar in both formations. The similarities of the heavy mineral assemblages studied suggest origin of these minerals from lithologically similar rocks. Negative correlations between the zircon + tourmaline + rutile (ZTR) values and the content of garnet and staurolite in the Ropianka Fm. may indicate, to a large extent, first-cycle delivery of garnet and staurolite to the formation. Negative, but low, correlation valid only for ZTR and garnet and positive correlations for ZTR and staurolite and kyanite in the Menilite Fm. suggest delivery of these minerals from sedimentary rocks or/and palimpsest sediments. The data obtained on mineral relationships and their morphology suggest mixed first-cycle and recycled provenance of the heavy minerals studied. Additionally, the first-cycle material input seems to be larger during the Ropianka Fm. sedimentation, while during the deposition of Menilite Fm. the contribution of material delivered from erosion of recycled sediments appears more prominent. The heavy mineral evidence suggests a change at the northern margin of the Skole Basin from an immature passive margin with a high relief during sedimentation of the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka Fm. to a mature passive margin with a low relief during sedimentation of the Menilite Fm.

In the Polish sector of the Magura Nappe, along the front of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, strongly tectonized calcareous flysch up to 1000 m thick is exposed. Previously these deposits, composed of thin- to thick-bedded flysch, with a packet of Łącko-type marls, have been included into several Paleocene/Eocene formations, e.g., the Szczawnica Formation. This formation contains a poor assemblage of agglutinated foraminifera and a relatively rich assemblage of calcareous nannoplankton, with abundant reworked species. The youngest species give evidence of the NN2 Zone (Lower Miocene). Additionally, in three profiles (Szlachtowa, Knurów and Waksmund) of the Kremna Fm., Early Miocene foraminifera have been recognized. This research documented that during the Burdigalian, at the front of Central Western Carpathians, there still existed a residual marine basin probably up to 100 km wide. These deposits also contain thick packages of exotic carbonate conglomerates derived from the SE, previously regarded as the Jarmuta Formation.

The calcareous nannoplankton and foraminifera from the Gładyszów Beds, regarded as the youngest deposits in the northern marginal Siary Subunit of the Magura Nappe in Poland, are characterized. The material investigated comes from outcrops in the vicinity of Gładyszów and from the Gładyszów PIG-1 borehole. The analysis allowed the establishment of the age of these deposits as not older than late Rupelian–early Chattian (the calcareous nannoplankton NP24 Zone). The taxonomic affiliations, environmental associations and preservation of the microfossils were analyzed to document the sedimentary processes and environmental conditions during the geotectonic transformation of the Magura Basin in the Oligocene. These microfossils also were compared with those reported from the terminal deposits of the Outer Carpathians and the Podhale Basin.

The Magura Nappe in the Polish sector of the Outer Carpathians consists of four tectonic subunits characterized by differing development of facies. From the south to the north, they include the Siary, Rača, Bystrica and Krynica subunits. The sedimentary succession in the Rača Subunit in the vicinity of the village of Osielec is composed of Campanian–Palaeogene flysch deposited in the Magura Basin. In this succession, the Middle Eocene Pasierbiec Sandstone Fm consists of thick-bedded sandstones and conglomerates with occasional intercalations of thin-bedded shale-sandstone flysch. Within the Pasierbiec Sandstone Fm at Osielec there is an olistostrome, rich in pebbles and cobbles of exotic rocks. In addition, large blocks of Neoproterozoic metabasites and boulders of Palaeogene organogenic limestones were found. The discovery of metabasites raised the possibility that the rocks in question could be evidence of supposed oceanic crust in the basement of the Magura sedimentary basin, because of the suggestion that they represent the Alpine orogenic cycle. This concept was abandoned when investigations of the absolute age of the metabasites gave a date of ca. 600 Ma. In the Osielec area, there are two tectonic thrust sheets in the Rača Subunit, namely the Osielczyk Thrust Sheet in the north and the Bystra Thrust Sheet in the south; they are folded and cut by a transverse system of strike-slip and oblique faults. The Osielczyk Thrust Sheet was overthrust northwards on to the Siary Subunit.

Middle-Upper Jurassic pelagic carbonates and radiolarites were studied in the Krížna Nappe of the Tatra Mountains (Central Western Carpathians, southern Poland and northern Slovakia). A carbon isotope stra- tigraphy of these deposits was combined with biostratigraphy, based on radiolarians, calcareous dinoflagellates and calpionellids. In the High Tatra and Belianske Tatra Mountains, the Bajocian and part of the Bathonian are represented by a thick succession of spotted limestones and grey nodular limestones, while in the Western Tatra Mountains by relatively thin Bositra-crinoidal limestones. These deposits are referable to a deeper basin and a pelagic carbonate platform, respectively. The various carbonate facies are followed by deep-water biosiliceous facies, namely radiolarites and radiolarian-bearing limestones of Late Bathonian-early Late Kimmeridgian age. These facies pass into Upper Kimmeridgian-Lower Tithonian pelagic carbonates with abundant Saccocoma sp. The bulk-carbonate isotope composition of the carbonate-siliceous deposits shows positive and negative S C excursions and shifts in the Early Bajocian, Late Bajocian, Early Bathonian, Late Bathonian, Late Callovian, Middle Oxfordian and Late Kimmeridgian. Additionally, the S13C curves studied show a pronounced increasing trend in the Callovian and a steadily decreasing trend in the Oxfordian-Early Tithonian. These correlate with the trends known from the Tethyan region. The onset of Late Bathonian radiolarite sedimenlalion is marked by a decreasing trend in S13C. Increased S13C values in the Late Callovian, Middle Oxfordian and Late Kimmeridgian (Moluccana Zone) correspond with enhanced radiolarian production. A significant increase in CaCO3 content is recorded just above the Late Callovian S13C excursion, which coincides with a transition from green to variegated radiolarites.

Opis:
The Tsäkkok Lens of the Seve Nappe Complex in the Scandinavian Caledonides comprises eclogite bodies hosted within metasedimentary rocks. These rocks are thought to be derived from the outermost margin of Baltica along the periphery of the Iapetus Ocean, but detrital records from the sedimentary rocks are lacking. Many metasedimentary outcrops within the lens expose both well-foliated metapelitic rocks and massive calc-silicates. The contacts between these two lithologies are irregular and are observed to trend at all angles to the high-pressure foliation in the metapelites. Where folding is present in the metapelites, the calc-silicate rocks are also locally folded. These relationships suggest metasomatism of the metapelites during the Caledonian orogenesis. Zircon U-Pb geochronology was conducted on sixty-one zircon grains from a calc-silicate sample to investigate if they recorded the metasomatic event and to assess the detrital zircon populations. Zircon grains predominantly show oscillatory zoning, sometimes with thin, homogeneous rims that have embayed contacts with the oscillatory-zoned cores. The zircon cores yielded prominent early Stenian, Calymmian, and Statherian populations with a subordinate number of Tonian grains. The zircon rims exhibit dissolution-reprecipitation of the cores or new growth and provide ages that span similar time frames, indicating overprinting of successive tectonic events. Altogether, the zircon record of the calc-silicate suggests that the Tsäkkok Lens may be correlated to Neoproterozoic basins that are preserved in allochthonous positions within the northern extents of the Caledonian Orogen.
