    Opis:
    The article presents a selection and preliminary classification of axiological lexis included in the currently valid Constitution of the Republic of Poland. Typology of names is preceded by the characteristics of the analyzed source and the description of an axiological level of the document. Constitutional axiological terms have been divided into three types. Firstly, a division into positive and negative values has been introduced. It has been noticed that a manner of presentation of counter values in the Constitution indicates inequality of negative values in relation to positive values. Secondly, the names have been grouped into lexical fields and two field structures being a reflection of the constitutional dualism of the sources’ values have been formulated. Thirdly, a division of the terms including denotation of names has been made and the following has been distinguished: a source of values, basic and instrumental values as well as their carriers and symbols. A detailed indication of the names and types of values protected in the Constitution leads to the revelation of the set of values professed by the civil community. A typological study of the gathered lexical material evokes methodological difficulties but still creates a necessary basis of a more profound semantic analysis.

    Opis:
    The analysis of the use of the notion of justice in the Polish Constitution proves that in the course of historical development, the designated value was given various conceptual profiles. It was associated mostly with the law within the subjective (‘justified entitlement’) and objective scope (‘legitimacy’), with the judicial authorities (‘fair hearing’), and with the punishment (‘just decision’). Apart from juridical meaning, the notion of justice shall connote ‘equality’ or ‘equal treatment of all people’, including ‘equal justice under law’ or ‘objectivity of a judicial ruling’. Over time the justice gains social and political value which is reflected in the ideal of social justice meant as ‘the equality of all citizens and equal evaluation thereof’. The latter is highlighted in the Polish Constitution (of 1997) where justice is treated as the guiding moral and constitutional principle in the Republic of Poland. The significant profiles of names designating justice in the texts of the Constitution are confronted with the connotations appearing in the questionnaires filled up by the students of the universities in Białystok. In the eyes of young Poles, justice seems to be a human value which is important in their environment an shall be protected by the state.

    Opis:
    The purpose of this article is to outline the understanding of the term "democracy" by Polish student youth in the light of the ASA survey ("axiological dictionary questionnaire") conducted in Lublin from 1990 to the present period, in order also in the light of the CBOS survey from 2000, and to define the place of "democratic values" in the system of values of Polish society on the basis of CBOS reports from the years 2005-2019. The ASA "cognitive" questionnaire, containing an open-ended question, confirmed that the features co-creating the "semantic centre" of the Polish notion of "democracy" over the consecutive decades invariably included "freedom" and "equality" and their various dimensions. The CBOS poll, which asked a closed question and indicated those features of 'democracy' which are at-tributed to it mainly "in theoretical considerations" and in journalism, revealed that adult Poles considered 'equality before the law' to be the most important feature of democracy, followed by such features as: 'protection of personal freedom of citizens', 'selection of the best people to govern the country', 'provision of equal educational opportunities for chil-dren from all families', etc. "Democratic values" were among the sixteen values important for Polish society. They occupied an important – albeit not the most important – place in this system.

In 2017, it was enriched by a valuable monograph written by three researchers from Vilnius University: Kristina Rutkovska, Marius Smetona and Irena Smetonienė, participants in the international project EUROJOS, who have made a significant contribution to the Leksykon aksjologiczny Słowian i ich sąsiadów (Axiological lexicon of the Slavs and their neighbours).Their study entitled Vertybės lietuvio pasaulėvaizdyje (Values in the linguistic worldview of Lithuanians), with a foreword by Jerzy Bartmiński, offers a full semantic description of six key names of values (concepts): HOME, FAMILY, WORK, EUROPE, FREEDOM and HONOUR.     W artykule przeprowadzono analizę nazw wartości w rozmyślaniach zakonnych z XVII w. (Rozmy slania. Na początku Cwiczenia Nowicyatckiego. Zporządzone Roku Panskiego 1696 Miesiąca Maja dnia 26 Ad M.D.G.). Nazwy wartości organizują cały tekst zabytku i stanowią jego podstawowe pole leksykalno-semantyczne. Rozumienie niektórych nazw pokrywa się z językiem ogólnym, w wielu miejscach jednak możemy wskazać znaczne przesunięcia semantyczne (np. służba), a nawet przejście z kategorii wartości negatywnych do wartości pozytywnych (np. pokora). Przesunięcia te wynikają przede wszystkim z obrazu Boga i świata przyjętego przez zakonnice, który determinowany jest wiarą katolicką i dość radykalnym pojmowaniem wiary w zakonie. Bardzo częste w zabytku jest wartościowanie implikowane, realizowane przez odwoływanie się do biblijnych opozycji-metafor (np. duch — ciało). Artykuł prezentuje wyniki analiz, które są częścią szerszego projektu prac badawczych nad językiem zakonnic (zwłaszcza nad językiem modlitewników i medytacji pisanych przez siostry zakonne w dobie średniopolskiej).
    The article shows analysis of the names of the values in religious meditations from seventeenth century. The names of the values organize the entire analyzed text and constitute its basic lexical-semantic field. Understanding of certain names coincide with the general language, however in many places we can point out significant semantic shifts, and even move within the category from negative to positive values (eg. humility, service, test). These shifts are mainly due to the image of God and the world adopted by the nuns, which is determined by the Catholic faith and the peculiar perception of faith in the religious order. Very common is also an implied valuation, that is appealing to biblical opposition-metaphors (eg. the spirit — the body).

    Opis:
    The article presents the ways of valuating and the functioning of values in a poetic text. Selected names of flowers appearing in Young Poland’s poetry have been used as the exemplary material. The author aims at indicating how far the general model of valuating, which is established in the standard variety of the Polish language, is reflected in modernistic works, to what extent poetic texts creatively process conventional ways of valuating connected with words referring to flowers, and how far they introduce a reader into a new, or other world of values connected with floral lexis. The analyses presented in the article prove that individual, modernistic ways of valuating the names of flowers and the visions of values connected with flowers differ from those established in the language and culture. Iris, culturally associated with ‘(sophisticated) beauty’, in modernistic poetic texts is a medium of anti-values: ugliness and kitsch; forget-me-not, which is commonly connoted with positively featured ‘memory’, in Young Poland’s lyrics is called a bad weed of memory; rose, stereotypically connected with ‘transcendental good’, in poetry from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries connotes ‘transcendental evil’ and ‘sin’; similar to lily, which conventionally is an image of ‘purity’, ‘innocence’ and ‘virginity’, whereas in Young Poland’s works it evokes ‘eroticism’, ‘passion’, ‘sensual love’ and ‘sin’. The names of flowers in Young Poland’s poetic texts are evaluated by means of different kinds of rhetorical devices and semantic changes: metaphors, personifications, anthropomorphisms, hyperboles, accumulation of epithets, modifications in the connotative sphere of words, as well as categorization, a change of rationality, or symbol exposition, thanks to which traditional valuating of flowers and conventional values connected with them are subject to transformations. In effect of such transformations, valuating becomes ambivalent, positive associations are more often than not destroyed, connotations carrying negative axiological undertone prevail, and values are substituted with anti-values.

    W opracowaniu poddano oglądowi niewielki wycinek dyskursu ziemiańskiego, ten mianowicie, który przez pryzmat leksyki pozwala zrekonstruować najistotniejsze wartości tego dyskursu. W realizacji tego celu wykorzystano warstwę apelatywną i proprialną słownictwa. Ta pierwsza sfera układa się w wyraziste i obficie reprezentowane pola semantyczne, które można traktować jak swoistą mapę świata, odwzorowującą ziemiańską rzeczywistość. Druga zaś – frekwencyjnie mniej znacząca, jednak istotna jakościowo i specyficzna – stanowi rodzaj sygnałów, odsyłaczy, katalizatorów wartości kultury ziemiańskiej. Analizy prowadzone z tej perspektywy pozwoliły zidentyfikować najistotniejsze dla dyskursu ziemiańskiego wartości w obszarze wartości hedonistycznych, poznawczych i obyczajowych.
    The article presents a tiny part of manorial discourse, namely the one which allows to reconstruct the essential values of the discourse in question through its lexis. In order to accomplish that purpose the appellative and proprial layers of the vocabulary have been used. The former forms a distinctive and abundant semantic field, which may be treated as a kind of world map of the landed gentry’s reality. The latter, not so numerous but from a qualitative point of view important and specific, is composed of signals, references, catalysts of manorial culture values. The analyses carried out from that perspective allowed to identify the values essential for the landed gantry’s values in the sphere of hedonistic, cognitive and moral values.
