    This paper deals with Orthodox baptismal names different from the first names given to the child at the Registry Office. Analysis of source material demonstrated that the number of baptismal names different from those given at the Registry Office constitutes a significant percentage (26.3%) of anthroponyms in the contemporary Orthodox name-giving trend. The choice of baptismal names was motivated by various reasons, but the most popular were names phonetically similar to the names used in the secular world (e.g. Алим - Alan, Анисия - Inesa, Илария - Laura, Кириена - Karina, Мелания - Milena, Христофор - Krystian, etc.). The quoted material shows that the presence of old-style Orthodox names in parish birth records is not necessarily the consequence of an intended return to a forgotten name-giving tradition. It is instead an attempt to combine religious tradition with modern trends in namegiving.

    Opis:
    In this paper, the issue of the correlation between the status of the onymic object, its social range and the general rules used when naming is considered. The author proposes to distinguish two basic levels of where the proper names function: a local one and a global one. Then, two particular patterns of naming are connected with these levels: an innovative pattern and a conservative pattern. The conservative names mostly refer to objects that are of social importance and have a general, wide range of functioning. On the other hand, innovative names generally refer to unstable objects that have a rather low social position, and a restricted, narrow range of functioning. Examples of both levels are analyzed, particularly the anthroponyms, toponyms and chrematonyms. The paper contains the argument, that more known conservative names have provided the characteristics of the prototypical proper name in general, and these characteristics are usually expanded to all proper names in their theoretical approaches.

    the influence of a name on the individual’s life
    Opis:
    The article analyses the influence of a particular name on the individual's life and the development of his script. It contains the examples taken from psychotherapeutic practice and the results of the study conducted on a group of students, which reveal that most of them believe that their name have been chosen purposefully (56,4%). Thus, it can be assumed that when parents chose names for their children, they have a concrete intention in mind, which may include the performance of certain tasks, the pressure to adopt certain roles or the expectations of certain behaviours. All this leads to the development of a particular life script.

    Opis:
    Japanese given names reflect through their kanji selection particular perceived or anticipated aspects concerning their bearers, providing an insight into the changing values of Japanese society. In the past, numbers were used in names mainly to refer to the order of birth, the time of birth, or, in the case of large numbers, to express a wish for longevity. Within the larger historical context, this paper focuses on the use of kanji representing numbers in the names of children born in the last ten years (2008–2017), exploring the recent reasons for their choice and what values and priorities of recent Japanese parents they reflect.
