Opis:
This paper presents material and technological studies on lab-on-chip (LOC) devices as a first step towards biocompatible and reliable research on microscopic fungi and soil organisms on a microscale. This approach is intended to respond to the growing need for environmental control and protection, by means of modern, miniaturized, portable and dependable microfluidics instrumentation. The authors have presented herein long-term, successful cultivation of different fungi representatives (with emphasis put on Cladosporium macrocarpum) in specially fabricated all-glass LOCs. Notable differences were noted in the development of these creatures on polymer, polydimethylosiloxane (PDMS) cultivation substrates, revealing the uncommon morphological character of the fungi mycelium. The utility of all-glass LOCs was verified for other fungi representatives as well –  Fusarium culmorum and Pencilium expansum, showing technical correspondence and biocompatibility of the devices. On that basis, other future applications of the solution are possible, covering, e.g. investigation of additional, environmentally relevant fungi species. Further development of the LOC instrumentation is also taken into consideration, which could be used for cultivation of other soil organisms and study of their mutual relationships within the integrated microfluidic device.

Opis:
Basing on 43 lectures and reports from the scope of current parasitological and mycological issues presented during the 50th Jubilee Clinical Day of Medical Parasitology (Lodz, 19–20 May 2011), the increasing importance of parasitic diseases and mycoses in medicine was presented. Difficulties in diagnosis and treatment of both imported parasitoses (malaria, intestinal amoebiosis, mansonelliasis) and native parasitoses (toxoplasmosis, toxocariasis, CNS cysticercosis), as well as parasitic invasions coexisting with HIV infection (microsporidiosis) have been emphasized. The possibility of human parasites transmission by vertical route and transfusion has been discussed. The important issue of diagnostic problems in intestinal parasitoses has been addressed, noting the increasing use of immunoenzymatic methods which frequently give false positive results. It was highlighted that coproscopic study is still the reference method for detecting parasitic intestinal infections. The mechanism of the immune reaction induced by intestinal nematodes resulting in, among others, inhibition of the host innate and acquired response was presented. Mycological topics included characteristics of various clinical forms of mycoses (central nervous system, oral cavity and pharynx, paranasal sinuses, nails and skin), still existing problem of antimicrobial susceptibility of fungal strains, diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties of zoonotic mycoses and the importance of environmental factors in pathogenesis of mycosis.

Opis:
Building mycology is a branch of construction that deals with identifying the causes and effects of biological corrosion, as well as protecting against and combating it. Biological corrosion is a type of corrosion occurring under the influence of microorganisms – in the human residential microenvironment, it is mainly bacteria and fungi, as well as their metabolic products, which create an obviously corrosive environment. Other biological factors responsible for this type of corrosion in relation to building materials are, in Polish conditions, primarily: algae, lichens, bryophytes and insects – technical pests of construction wood.

Opis:
W pracy zawarto wstępne opracowanie badań mykologicznych w budynkach mieszkalnych i gmachach użyteczności publicznej w Warszawie i okolicy.
This paper contains preliminary results of mycological research in residential and public buildings in Warsaw and its surroundings. The study focuses on the qualitative survey of fungi in buildings of various categories. It includes research objects divided into six categories depending on the age of the buildings and their use: new buildings and the objects of about twenty years and older, as well as twenty-year single-family houses. Two houses that are in the registry of monuments (National Heritage Institute) were also in the scope of the analysis. There have also been attempts to classify the identified species of fungi into groups of BSL (Biological Safety Level), in order to identify their potential allergenic impact on buildings users. In more than half of the studied objects the most frequently isolated species was Alternaria alternata (55% of cases) and fungi of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium. Aspergillus niger was identified in 33% of the objects, exclusively in the neglected buildings, including those abandoned for at least one year.

Opis:
The mycology of peatlands, with their specific plant communities and numerous rare plant species, has been underexplored and is poorly recognized. The main objectives of this study were to identify the species richness and diversity of macromycetes in raised and transitional bogs of Pomerania and to establish correlations between macroscopic fungi and peatland communities occurring in the area in view of environmental conditions. Investigations spanning a period of ten years were conducted at 134 sites (71 raised and 63 transitional bogs) in eight non-forest peatland communities (Caricetum lasiocarpae, Caricetum limosae, Caricetum rostratae, Eriophoro angustifolii-Sphagnetum recurvi, Rhynchosporetum albae, Erico-Sphagnetum medii, Sphagnetum magellanici, and the Eriophorum vaginatum-Sphagnum fallax community) and two forest communities (Vaccinio uliginosi-Pinetum and Vaccinio uliginosi-Betuletum pubescentis) in which 108 permanent observation plots were established for detailed examinations. A total of 191 macromycete species were recorded in the peatlands. The smallest number of species was recorded in Rhynchosporetum albae (12 species) and Caricetum rostratae (15 species). Phytocoenoses richest in fungi were Vaccinio uliginosi-Pinetum (102 species) and Vaccinio uliginosi-Betuletum pubescentis (121 species). The number of macromycete species recorded in individual peatland communities depends on the community type and is not conditioned by the number of observations and the number and the total area of permanent plots. Five mycosociologico-ecological groups of macroscopic fungi were distinguished based on numerical analyses. Four groups comprise species of fungi associated with a specific phytocoenosis or a group of phytocoenoses. One group consists of fungi with a broader ecological scale. The majority of environmental variables representing the substrate’s chemical properties, humidity and pH show a statistically significant influence on the diversity of macroscopic fungi species in the peatland communities. Cartogram maps of the distribution of 21 species of peatland fungi are included and geographico-ecological features of the species are briefly described.
