Psychology of music, a science of the relations between humans and sound structures, is continuously developing. Given the growing number of publications in this domain, reviews of the literature are of value, as they integrate knowledge, informing and guiding future research endeavors. This article presents the results of a 47-year (1973–2019) content analysis of research on creating, practicing, and responding to music featured in The Psychology of Music journal. The purpose of our study was to identify and describe the themes in research on creating, practicing, and responding to music, indicating which study topics were the most often present in publications. We identified 17 categories of research topics and found that the largest number of publications dealt with predictors of music creating, self-regulated practice, or affective responses to music. Suggestions for developing and bolstering research and practice are provided.

Opis:
In the last decade, the growing interest in the subject of musicians’ mental practice has produced a significant increase in research on mental and instrumental practice. More than half of all the studies concerns professional musicians, and relatively little research is conducted on children or adolescents. The article will describe research on the mental practice of teenagers attending music schools in Poland and Germany. Questionnaire surveys answer the question of whether young people use mental practice, how they do it, and what the content of mental training while practicing an instrument is. The analysis suggests that gifted adolescents from both countries (1) do not use mental rehearsal very often and (2) use mental practice strategies in a similar way. What they differ in is the frequency of using mental practice as an integral part of their instrumental learning, using musical-analytical strategy, and the quality of mental practice. The study indicates the need to teach mental practice and its importance in increasing the effectiveness of instrumental practice.

Opis:
The congregation of the Benedictine nuns of Sandomierz, active between 1615 and 1903, belonged to wealthy magnatial foundations, which allowed the convent to foster cultural activities. Special emphasis was placed on musical performance of various types - the musical adornment of the liturgy. The ‘Glory of God’, as Benedictine nuns referred to it, constituted the essence of their congregational life. On weekdays, the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, Masses and - occasionally - other services in choir took six hours, and on numerous feast days of the liturgical year, when the Liturgy of the Hours was sung, not read, it required even more time. The higher the rank of the feast day, the greater was the effort to stress its importance by providing it with a proper musical setting, which led to the cultivation of musical practices of various kinds on special occasions. The musical repertory of the Sandomierz Benedictine nuns comprised plainchant without instrumental accompaniment, plainchant with organ accompaniment, polyphonic a cappella singing (referred to as ‘figure’), vocal instrumental music (‘fractus’) and instrumental music. A picture of religious musical practice emerges primarily from extant musical sources, and also from a ‘choir agenda’ from 1749, a convent chronicle of the years 1762-1780, ‘treasury records’ from 1739-1806 and convent registers. Eighteenth-century sources document the musical activity of twenty-four nuns of the Sandomierz convent, some of them considered to be ‘professional’ musicians and referred to as ‘singers and players’. The most interesting, but also most problematic, areas are vocal instrumental practice and the likely consitution of the nuns’ music chapel. We find information about nuns playing keyboard instruments, violin, viola da gamba, tromba marina and horn.

Opis:
The cult of saints has been developing very vividly since the beginning of Christianity. It is expressed in three forms: veneratio – worship of the saints; imitatio – imitation of the example of their lives; invocatio – invocation of their intercession, which always leads to the Father glorified in his saints. This is most fully done in the liturgy, and thus also in the Liturgy of the Hours. Therefore, it was important to prepare the texts and melodies for the Liturgy of the Hours, renewed after the Second Vatican Council, which included liturgical memories, feasts and feasts of the Lord’s saints and common texts on saints. The constitutive element of the two basic canonical hours, Matins and Vespers, apart from reading, psalmody and prayer, are the hymns, the texts of which had to be reviewed and prepared according to the rules developed by the specially created Cœtus VII Study Group. The full set of hymns in the post-conciliar Liturgy of the Hours reached an unprecedented number of 291 songs. Most of the hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours were translated into Polish by P. Galiński. Of course, according to the recommendations of the Congregation of Rites, after the publication of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Polish language, it was necessary to make every effort to arrange appropriate melodies for it, especially for the parts intended by nature for singing, such as hymns. This article analyses the texts and melodies of the hymns about saints for the two most important canonical hours: Matins and Vespers, published in Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, edited by s. J. M. Bujalska PDDM and s. M. D. Nowak PDDM. It was published in 2012 on the initiative of the Disciples of the Divine Master. In addition to the liturgical hymns, the collection discussed here also includes church songs about saints, which can be performed in place of the hymn. The review and analysis of the hymns on saints led to the conclusion that not all the rules of a well composed hymn, developed by Cœtus VII, were applied in the hymn texts on saits, published in the Polish edition of the Book Liturgy of the Hours. In turn, the presentation of compositions about saints included in the collection Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, showed a huge richness of forms and musical styles that they represent. On the one hand, it revealed strong references to romantic folk songs and a strong attachment to diatonic scales, which are characteristic of Polish liturgical work. On the other hand, it revealed the attempts of composers to refer to contemporary music stylistics. All this gives a wide spectrum of views on contemporary liturgical work and allows us to set new paths for its development.

Opis:
The text presents a history of research on the Catholic folk singing in Poland with a special regard to works of the greatest Polish ethnographer, Oskar Kolberg (1814–1890). Karol Kurpiński, a composer and the director of the National Theatre, who was the first to debate on folk music in 1820, had promoted a functional definition of a folk song embracing also religious singing in national language. Anthologies of the texts of folk song edited in 1830s and 1840s put stress, however, on possibly original repertoire of peasants transmitted orally and by memory. Religious songs as being learned basically from prints were usually not included into folklore studies. But culture changes in the course of the 19th century have induced explorers to document also older religious songs in folk use, such as carrols (Michał Marcin Mioduszewski 1843). Oskar Kolberg was concentrated mainly on regional specificity of each part of the country. That is why the standardized repertoire of religious songs performed in churches did not attract much of his attraction. In spite of his preferences, he had written down about 800 religious songs in the whole collection of 20.000 vocal and instrumental pieces. These 800 songs refer to local repertories accompanying the Lenten, Easter, Christmas, the cult of saint patrons and connected with other contexts such as funeral ceremonies. The reason for respecting also religious singing in Kolbergs works was a significance of the oral way of performing resulting in huge amount of variants which were determined also by strictly regional features of traditional singing. Performance practice became a common interest for both ethnomusicology and hymnology since the 1970s, so the more that elements of Gregorian chant have survived in living tradition up till now.
Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia historię badań nad katolickim śpiewem ludowym w Polsce, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem pracy największego polskiego etnografa, Oskara Kolberga (1814–90). Karol Kurpiński, kompozytor i dyrektor Teatru Narodowego, inicjator pierwszej debaty na temat muzyki ludowej w 1820 roku, zaproponował funkcjonalne ujęcie pieśni ludowej, której definicja obejmowała także pieśni religijne śpiewane w języku narodowym. Antologie tekstów pieśni ludowych wydawane w latach 30. i 40. XIX wieku zawierały możliwie najbardziej oryginalny repertuar pieśni chłopskich przekazywanych ustnie i pamięciowo.
