Opis:
The aim of this study is to determine the possibilities and constraints of applying semantic isotopy, a concept developed in the area of semiotics with reference to language system and structure, in analysis of Orientalism as a way of presenting a reality that is referred to as the Orient in a musical work. The starting point is a review of acts of functioning of isotopy in semiotic text concept: from the original understanding of A. J. Greimas (semantic coherence of narrative text in the context of his theory of structural semantics), through the approach of François Rastier (strategic concept of interpretation within his theory of interpretative semantics) and Bernard Pottier (stability of semic feature, or isosemy of lexical-grammatical structures), to Umberto Eco’s concept (interpretive coherence associated with the concept of topic within the principle of textual cooperation). Determinants of adaptation of isotopy in musical semiotics are considered using the example of spectacularly extended fi eld of application of this concept in Eero Tarasti’s semiotic theory (or theory of musicological cognition of music) and his concept of discourse (musical one, and about music). The range of usefulness of isotopy is presented on the basis of methodological propositions of JeanPierre Bartoli and results of his research into Orientalism of the 19th- and early 20th-century French music. A description of consequences of examining Orientalism (oriental exoticism) as a semiotic system, assuming “language-likeness” of music, concerns conditions of “isotopic functioning” of musical exoticism. The conclusions underline a necessity for distinguishing between Orientalism and orientality due to the nature of semiosis in the case of music, and a need to verify the authenticity of “allochtonic units” (Bartoli’s “oriental semes” or “exosememes”) in a prospect of research in Orientalism as a phenomenon in the Western culture. These issues have also been emphasized in recent research on the musical consequences of cultural diffusion processes (manifestations of “occidentalising exoticism” in contemporary musical practice in the Middle East), in which the isotopy/isosemy is used as an objectifi ed transcultural analytical tool.

The aim of this article is to present selected concepts related to idea generation in musical com-position. Different approaches towards creativity are discussed in order to delineate how they describe spontaneous creativity. The typological view of composers and theories of the creative process are discussed. Further advances in studies of creative cognition are scrutinized: research on unconscious and conscious processes in creation, followed by the development of the concept of innovative Involuntary Musical Imagery (InMI) in composers. Current research on internal auditory phenomena suggests that composers’ InMI can be potentially innovative and serve composers as a source of ready ideas to be used in their compositions. The current overview is informed by cognitive sciences and creative process studies, especially compositional studies.

The congregation of the Benedictine nuns of Sandomierz, active between 1615 and 1903, belonged to wealthy magnatial foundations, which allowed the convent to foster cultural activities. Special emphasis was placed on musical performance of various types - the musical adornment of the liturgy. The ‘Glory of God’, as Benedictine nuns referred to it, constituted the essence of their congregational life. On weekdays, the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, Masses and - occasionally - other services in choir took six hours, and on numerous feast days of the liturgical year, when the Liturgy of the Hours was sung, not read, it required even more time. The higher the rank of the feast day, the greater was the effort to stress its importance by providing it with a proper musical setting, which led to the cultivation of musical practices of various kinds on special occasions. The musical repertory of the Sandomierz Benedictine nuns comprised plainchant without instrumental accompaniment, plainchant with organ accompaniment, polyphonic a cappella singing (referred to as ‘figure’), vocal instrumental music (‘fractus’) and instrumental music. A picture of religious musical practice emerges primarily from extant musical sources, and also from a ‘choir agenda’ from 1749, a convent chronicle of the years 1762-1780, ‘treasury records’ from 1739-1806 and convent registers. Eighteenth-century sources document the musical activity of twenty-four nuns of the Sandomierz convent, some of them considered to be ‘professional’ musicians and referred to as ‘singers and players’. The most interesting, but also most problematic, areas are vocal instrumental practice and the likely consitution of the nuns’ music chapel. We find information about nuns playing keyboard instruments, violin, viola da gamba, tromba marina and horn.

Opis:
After some in-depth analysis, for instance, of the first Ballade in G minor (1836), Frédéric Chopin’s music reveals itself as a striking case of a musical equilibrium between two major musical tendencies. On the one hand, his music brings the reaching towards an idealised voice to a full and very convincing development. His musical themes sing most of the time while all the main characteristics of his writing explore continuous spaces, to the extent the piano can achieve. He uses many melodic chromaticisms and broad gestures, very voice-like phrasings ranging from the most delicate pianissimi to the extremely dramatic fortissimo, and other vocal features. On the other hand, his music is unavoidably written for a percussion instrument (the piano), makes much use of rhythms and often dances as well, while his accompaniments are thick with vertical features, accents and other percussive traits. In reality, Chopin’s music is in a striking state of equilibrium between the vocal and the percussive and constitutes a rich case of a mixed status between the two poles. Perhaps for one of the last times in Western music, Chopin is precisely at the point of equilibrium, before the rise of the percussive that gave birth to much of the twentieth century’s music. Chopin’s music will remain a true and much beloved monument of equilibrium.

I suggest that emotions are not the primary affective attitude towards music. If we are to explain music’s expressiveness according to the Resemblance Theory, that theory should be extended to include feelings. Because of the lack of intentionality in music and the dearth of universal emotional gestures to explain the subtlety of music’s expressive power, explaining this expressiveness by making recourse to music’s relationships with emotions is bound to face challenges. I will argue that, even though the movements in music asso- ciated with musical expressiveness might not necessarily be associated with emotions, they might very well be associated with certain feelings of the movement itself.

The author of the lecture is avidly interested in music worlds of Kazimierz Wierzynski, whose artistic resonance is the literary output of the poet, not only though… An interpretational attempt was made to analyse chosen texts by Wierzynski, making use of various criteria and their selection and interpretation. Texts of particular importance seem to be those which are concentrating both on musical aspects of literary texts, and references to music art, musicological conditions included in them. The author has carried out literary-musicological analyses of chosen poetic works of art by Kazimierz Wierzynski. She also focused on analysing linguistic means of expression in the semantic and phonetic layers and searching for artistic traces constituting the poetic originality of the author of Koncert zimowy (Winter concert). Music in the texts by Wierzynski proving his interest in the art of polyhymns, has become a particular manifestation of intellectual, aesthetic, intertextual worlds of his spirituality. Thanks to them it introduces a reader to the existential worlds of life with music and musicality expressed by means of poetry.

Opis:
Many of the Froberger’s harpsichord compositions were inspired by the issues other than music. These works can be divided into two groups: works dedicated to particular people and programme pieces which are the descriptions of different events involving Froberger. Allemande faite en passant le Rhin dans une barque en grand peril, as a part of the fi rst Suite in e minor, belongs to the second group. The composition was inspired by some dramatic events seen by Froberger during his cruise on the Rhine which were then presented through music. In this article we attempt to analyze and interpret the compositional solutions aimed at presenting the non-musical content in the musical works. Considering the time when the Allemande... was composed, we chose rhetorical-musical analysis as the main research tool. Allemande... survived to our time in three manuscript sources: Ms . Bulyowsky , Ms. Tappert and Ms. SA 4450. The Ms. SA 4450 is significantly valuable for the research problem in our paper as it shows the division of Allemande... into 26 clearly separate sections, corresponding to 26 events seen by Froberger during his Rhine travel. Each of the 26 events has been both described in the written commentary and highlighted in the musical content. This unique record is invaluable for the interpretation of this work and provides the guidance for the interpretation of other Froberger’s compositions containing program in the title as it shows compositional solutions used directly for the purpose of presenting the non-musical content.

Musical awareness of languages in general and that of the French language in particular in the field of teaching French as a foreign language remains weak today, not generalized and far inferior to linguistic and cultural awareness. By placing oneself within the framework of the didactology-didactics of the music of the French language-culture, it appears that modes of conditioning of this spontaneous, intuitive and reflected musical consciousness can logically take their place in accordance with the fundamental existence of the music of the French language produced in the spoken mode and of the need for the learner to master it.

The study consists of three complementary parts. The first introduces to the genesis of the concept, which originates from ancient rhetoric and has been described, among others by Aristotle, Cicero or Boethius. The second part of the article is the presentation of the topic in the context of the analyzes of Ernst Robert Curtius, Janina Abramowska and Jacek Jadacki in the field of literary studies. The last and most extensive part of this text is devoted to showing topics in musicology on the example of several authors. The papers on topic theory will be highlighted, which since the 1980s has been mainly developed by researchers from Anglo-Saxon countries.

The Museum of Musical Instruments in Poznan (a branch of the National Museum) is in possession of a very important collection of music manuscripts from the former Jesuit monastery in Otyń (Ger. Wartenberg), which was dissolved in 1776. The activities of this centre were associated primarily with the figure of Karol Reinach, the monastery’s last superior (from 1753). Reinach maintained friendly relations with Frederick II the Great, who was an ardent flautist, as we know, and visited Otyń from time to time. The Otyń manuscripts were bequeathed to the museum in 1947, along with three preserved instruments: a pair of kettledrums and a bass viola da gamba. At present, the collection of manuscripts from the Jesuit ensemble of Otyń contains fifty-six compositions, written between 1753 and 1768. Thirty-one pieces have fully certified provenance, reflected on the title pages of the manuscripts in the form of inscriptions, such as ‘pro Choro Residentiae Wartenbergensis’, and in the names of the Otyń transcribers. Twenty-two compositions were classified as belonging to the Jesuit collection on the basis of its inventory number, placed in the top right corner. Seventeen of the preserved manuscripts were provided with exact dates of origin (ten compositions were dated to the day, the other seven to a particular year). In these manuscripts, one can find compositions of the following types: offertoria, antiphons, Marian hymns (mostly arias), litanies, carols, a cantata, a dialogue and a sequence. All of them are vocal-instrumental. The lyrics were written in Latin and German, and their subject matter is mostly connected with the Marian cult (the antiphons Ave Regina Caelorum, Alma Redemptoris Mater and Regina Coeli Laetare\ the hymn Ave Maris Stella), Jesuit themes (a litany of St John Nepomucen, a prayer of St Francis Xavier, O Deus Amo ego te) and Christmas (carols). The well-known composers include Frantisek Xaver Brixi (1732-1771), Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799), Carl Heinrich Graun (1704-1759), Johann Adolph Hasse (1699-1783) and Karel Loos (1724-1772), and there are also the less well-known or nearly unknown, such as Carolus Gaebel [Gebel], F. Passelt [?], Joseph Rhodigez, Antonio Josepho Ronge (or Runge [?]), Francisco Rudolph and Wollmann. The continued examination of the collection will certainly reveal more details that are unknown or as yet barely identified. The research is due to be capped with the publication of a thematic catalogue of Otyń’s music manuscripts and their registration in the RISM database.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the work of Richard Wallaschek, who was sharply criticised during his lifetime, and only in the 1980s did the academic community renew its interest in his achievements. His book Primitive Music (London 1893) is considered to have laid the foundations for comparative musicology. He sought to prove that comparing European music with the music of primitive peoples was essential, and was the only way to attain a proper view of the products and development of our own culture. The year 1896, in which Wallaschek received his habilitation from the University of Vienna, is regarded as the beginning of comparative musicology in Vienna. Wallaschek postulated that ‘formal aesthetics’, describing merely ‘the chronology of composers’ and marked by an europocentricism, be replaced by a modern musicology, collaborating with music psychology and music ethnography and based on the natural foundations of musical aesthetics - a musicology which would formulate its conclusions on the basis of ‘facts and examples’, which it would verify by means of natural material. A central place in his research was occupied by the genesis of music, musical experiencing and aesthetic judgment, and the perception and creation of music. Taking up the question of musical abilities, Wallaschek devoted much space to women. He considered them more gifted than men, in which he differed from Eduard Hanslick and from other of his contemporary scholars. Postulating a sociological analysis of the situation of musical women in various cultures, he pointed to the methodological necessity of making a strict distinction between the actual musical abilities of women and the social appraisal of those skills.
