    Opis:
    W artykule poruszone zostały zagadnienia związane z tworzeniem misji muzeów przedstawiających dziedzictwo ziemiaństwa polskiego. W okresie powojennym wartości ziemiańskie były traktowane jako wrogie systemowi politycznemu, a ziemianie byli przedstawiani jako wrogowie ludu. Z kolei po 1989 roku nastąpił proces mitologizowania tradycji szlacheckich i ziemiańskich i przywracanie pozytywnego wizerunku. Podjęta została tu próba zakreślenia modelowych ram dla stworzenia misji muzeów, których rola w przekazywaniu wiedzy i emocji dotyczących tego fragmentu historii Polski jest nie do przecenienia. Omawiając ramy tworzenia kolekcji muzealnych w omawianym zakresie, zwrócono również uwagę na konieczność uwzględniania możliwie szerokiego kontekstu, partycypacji społecznej oraz edukacji i obszarów, których powinna ona dotyczyć.
    The article concerns the issues related to the creation of the missions of museums which exhibit the legacy of Polish gentry. In the post-war period gentry values were regarded as hostile to the political system, and landowners were portrayed as enemies of a people. In contrast, after 1989, the process of mythologizing gentry traditions was started and a positive image was restored. In the article I try to delineate the model framework for the creation of the museum mission whose role to inform about the knowledge and emotions concerning this fragment of Polish history is of paramount importance. The discussion of the framework for creating museum collections in this field has also highlighted the need to take into account the broadest possible context, social participation and education.

    Opis:
    A critical assessment of the contemporary state of the new Silesian Museum in Katowice has been presented. In the Author’s view, the institution has currently reached an organizational crisis resulting from the process of losing its genuine idea rooted in its new seat and from the gradual blurring of the concept of its new mission. The reflections presented in the paper are based on data analysis: the official documents produced by the Silesian Museum in Katowice, media materials which comment on its activity, as well as on the participant observation from the perspective of an insider: of the Silesian community and of an institution’s academic affiliate. The ambitious and modern vision of the new Silesian Museum basing on the rehabilitation of the post-industrial area of the former ‘Katowice’ Coal Mine constitutes a chance to enjoy the ‘second life’ by the post-mining sites. The Katowice institution undertook the mission of creating space for the dialogue with the past and accomplishments of the present in order to better know Silesia, Poland, and Europe. Regrettably, inept actions of the decision-makers, chaos related to the position of the Museum’s Director, failed attempts to merge the Museum with the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom, lack of understanding for the supranational, universal message related to the region’s history, have led to losing the genuine idea and blurring of the selected mission. The crisis that the Silesian Museum has been suffering is politically underpinned, and results from the use of museum institutions instrumentally by the authorities in order to fulfill their short-term goals. The decision makers of the Silesian Museum will in the near future have to choose between two operating formulas: they can either follow the conservative way, implying stagnation and becoming a closed ‘shrine-like museum’, or aspire to be a venue for the Silesian dialogue, turning into an open ‘museum-forum’.
    W artykule zaprezentowano krytyczną ocenę współczesnej kondycji nowego Muzeum Śląskiego w Katowicach. Zdaniem autora placówka ta jest obecnie w kryzysie organizacyjnym, związanym z kilkuletnim procesem zatracania pierwotnej idei wyrosłej wokół nowej siedziby oraz stopniowego rozmycia koncepcji nowej misji. Refleksje zaprezentowane w artykule oparte zostały na analizie danych – na oficjalnych dokumentach wytworzonych przez Muzeum Śląskie w Katowicach oraz materiałach medialnych komentujących działalność placówki, a także obserwacji uczestniczącej, prowadzonej z perspektywy insidera społeczności śląskiej i współpracownika naukowego instytucji. Ambitna i nowoczesna wizja nowego Muzeum Śląskiego, bazująca na rewitalizacji poprzemysłowych terenów po Kopalni Węgla Kamiennego „Katowice”, stanowi szansę na „drugie życie” terenów pokopalnianych. Katowicka placówka muzealna podjęła się misji kreowania przestrzeni dla dialogu z przeszłością i dokonaniami współczesności w celu głębszego poznawania Śląska, Polski i Europy. Niestety, nieudolne działania decydentów politycznych, zawirowania na stanowisku dyrektora muzeum, nieudane próby połączenia z bytomskim Muzeum Górnośląskim, brak zrozumienia dla ponadnarodowego, uniwersalnego przekazu historycznego dotyczącego dziejów regionu, doprowadziły do zatracenia pierwotnej idei i rozmycia obranej misji. Kryzys, w jakim znalazło się obecnie Muzeum Śląskie, ma podłoże polityczne i wynika z wykorzystywania instytucji muzealnej do instrumentalnych doraźnych działań władzy.

    Opis:
    Museums in Poland are developing dynamically and undergoing intensive transformations. More and more attention is paid to the issues of management, including the ones connected with a missionary role of museums. The concept of a mission is commonly identified with the purposes of museums and the main subject of their activity. The aim of this article is to analyze a mission as an element of strategic management for museums, as well as to identify the scale of the phenomenon of a mission formulated by Polish museums (how many of them have a formulated mission?), and to analyze the content of a mission, mainly with reference to the objectives included in the law on museums. The article discusses the results of the existing data analysis (the websites review and the Public Information Bulletin of museums which are in the database of the National Institute of Museums and Public Collections).

    W 2014 roku Muzeum Misyjno-Etnograficzne Księży Werbistów w Pieniężnie obchodziło 50 lat istnienia. Półwieczna (nie licząc okresu przedwojennego) praca kolekcjonerska zaowocowała powstaniem usystematyzowanych, bogatych zbiorów muzealnych. Artykuł zarysowuje kształt powstającego zbioru eksponatów, a następnie przedstawia jego dokładniejsze omówienie. Zgromadzone egzemplarze o profilu misjologiczno-etnograficznym reprezentują różne – pod względem kulturowym – obszary świata oraz różnorodne działy kultury materialnej i sztuki. Zebrane przedmioty pokazane zostały według wydzielonych asortymentów, ich liczebności i państw pochodzenia. Wspomniano też o okazach sztuki chrześcijańskiej, będącej wyrazem dialogu chrześcijaństwa z kulturami ludów miejscowych. Wyeksponowany dla zwiedzających fragment zasobu egzotycznych kolekcji muzealnych stanowi wycinek dokumentacji życia społeczeństw oraz ukazuje przekrojowo całokształt kultury wybranych plemion i ludów.
    In 2014 the Missionary and Ethnographic Museum in Pieniężno celebrated 50th anniversary of its existence. The collector’s work done in half-a-century (not taking into consideration pre-war period) resulted in the creation of systematized and rich museum collections. The article outlines the shape of the emerging collection of exhibits, and then presents its more detailed discussion. Collected items have a missionary-ethnographic profile and culturally represent various areas of the world and various branches of material culture and art. The items are shown according to separate assortments, their number and countries of origin. Also specimens of Christian art are shown, which is an expression of the dialogue of Christianity with the cultures of local peoples. A fragment of the exotic museum collections, which are exposed for visitors, exist thanks to the missionaries themselves and they are a documentation of the lives of societies and show the overall culture of selected tribes and peoples.

    Having been discharged from hospital in January 1945, Jan Morawiński became a curator at a new Branch of the National Museum in Warsaw. His main task was guardianship of the collection and Palace’s preservation. On 13 January 1946, Morawiński left for Berlin’s Polish Military Mission as a specialist in restituting Polish cultural assets from Germany. Morawiński’s scope of activities covered first of all the issues of the restitution of Polish cultural assets, acquisition of Polonica from German collections, and purchase of art works. In the course of his mission he operated mainly within the British occupation zone in Germany. The Polish claims submitted by Morawiński to the British were related mainly to the Grasleben depository and the bells amassed in Hamburg. After months-long efforts, he succeeded in leaving for Hamburg in order to ascertain the presence of about a thousand bells of Polish provenance there. Furthermore, Morawiński operated within the Soviet occupation zone. In Saxony’s Nossen he discovered nine paintings which had come from Cracow. One of his greatest successes was to win the permission of the English to recover the archival resources originally from Gdansk, Elbląg, Szczecin, and Toruń. With the financing provided by the Ministry of Culture and Art he purchased, among others, the painting by Teodor Lubieniecki Family in the Park Background, a cup of Augustus II (1698), and two etchings featuring John III Sobieski. Having finished his Berlin assignment, he became head of the Polish Military Mission in the French occupation zone in Germany. In May 1949, he returned to Poland to become a Cultural Counselor at Poland’s Embassy in Rome. Morawiński died suddenly in Warsaw on 13 December 1949.

    Muzea w krajowych bibliotekach uczelnianych, poza izbami pamięci, nie występują, a już muzeum prezentujące technikę jest absolutnym wyjątkiem. W artykule zaprezentowano takie muzeum, utworzone w ramach Biblioteki Głównej uczelni technicznej, jaką jest Politechnika Śląska. Przedstawiono proces powstania Muzeum, charakterystykę działalności, zaprezentowano sposób tworzenia katalogu i podano jego lokalizację. Przedstawiono też Stowarzyszenie Muzeów Uczelnianych, z którym współpracuje placówka gliwicka.
    Museums in national university libraries, apart from the chambers of remembrance, are not common. The museum presenting the technique is an absolute exception. The article presents such a museum created as part of the Main Library of a technical university, which is the Silesian University of Technology. It presents the process of its creation, characteristics, and the way of creating a catalogue and its location. The Association of University Museums with which we cooperate was also presented.
