Opis:
Introduction and objectives. Since the paravertebral muscles promote dynamic stability to protect the spine, the aim of this study was to verify the association between the acute effect of the stretching support time for the multifidus muscle, and changes in the static and dynamic stability of the lumbopelvic region. Materials and method. A total of 46 volunteers were cross-submitted to three different stretching interventions for the multifidus muscle, being the manutention of stretching time the variation between interventions: 10, 30 and 60 seconds. Each volunteer was submitted to the three interventions with a minimum interval of 7 days and a maximum of 10 days. The order of the interventions was determined by lot. First, pre-intervention values for static and dynamic stability were collected using a biofeedback pressure unit. Subsequently, the sample was forwarded for intervention according to its group; after the completion of the same, data were collected on post-intervention stability. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software and Chi-square test, with a significance level of 5% (α = 0.05). Results. There was no significant association between the manutention of stretching time and static stability, being χ2(4)=0.812; p=0.949. Similarly, there was no significant association between the stretching support time and dynamic stability, and χ2(4)=1.517; p=0.827. Conclusion. In conclusion, there was no significant association between stretching time of the paravertebral muscles and static and dynamic stability.

Opis:
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is being increasingly used in the modern medicine as a material stimulating, regenerating and accelerating tissue healing, including muscle injuries in sports. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of PRP on strength recovery in exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD). A baseline value was established in six healthy male volunteers during maximal voluntary strength isometric contractions (MVC) of the elbow flexors in both arms. This was followed by MVC performance (80% IRM) concentric-eccentric exercise of both elbow flexors until point of exhaustion, and 24 h later the subjects were injected with PRP in the non-dominant arm (PRP-arm). Maximal isometric strength and muscle soreness was compared before and at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) between the arms. The results indicate that the muscle soreness was significantly decreased in PRP administered arm when compared to control-arm, however, the levels for isometric flexors peak torque (PT) and average strength (AS) significantly declined in the bout arm post exercise induced muscle damage. Administration of PRP had no effect on the muscle strength parameters, however, flexor PT values were higher in PRP administered arm compared to the control arm, but this was only achieved on the second day of post-exercise induced muscle damage.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to investigate the possibility of using infrared (IR) thermography for assessing muscle fatigue during low effort. Three tests at constant levels of load 5, 15 and 30% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) lasting 5 min each were performed on a group of 10 men. Temperature and electromyographic (EMG) signal were registered from biceps brachii (BB). Analysis focused on the influence of load on the values and changes in time of muscle temperature. Correlations between temperature and EMG parameters (RMS, MPF and MF) were also analysed. Constant load sustained during the tests resulted in an increase in the temperature of BB. There were statistically significant correlations between temperature and EMG parameters for most subjects. Results of the study suggest that IR thermography can be an alternative or supplementary method for assessing muscle fatigue at low levels of contraction.

The aim of investigation was the frequency of histopathological changes of the m. pectoralis superficialis of game and Mongolian pheasants of different ages. The samples for analyze from pectoral muscle were taken after bird slaughter immediately at 12, 16 and 20 weeks of age. Then with from the samples made the histological slides and stained with H + E coloring method to visualize of the muscle tissue structure. The muscle structure analysis was conducted per area 1.5 mm2 with the following histopathological changes: atrophy, shape changes, giant fibers, necrosis, hyaline degeneration, splitting, connective tissue hypertrophy and inflammatory. There was a small frequency of histopathological changes in both pheasant varieties. The most histopathological changes ware observed atrophy and changes of fiber shape. Other changes were sporadic. The connective tissue hypertrophy and inflammatory infiltration were not observed in any individuals. Mongolian pheasants found slightly higher frequency of histopathological changes, but these differences were not statistically significant. Considering the above facts, it can be stated that m. pectoralis superficialis both varieties of pheasants because of the small number of histopathological changes observed in their structure and their nutritional value are valuable raw materials for the high-quality food production.

Aim. Currently, ultrasonography (USG) is used to study changes occurring in the lateral abdominal wall muscles (LAM). Here, the question that naturally arises is whether a change in the thickness of the ultrasound image can be identified with a change in muscle activity. Therefore, the purpose of the present work is to: 1) undertake an analysis of available publications exploring the relationship between electromyography (EMG) and USG; 2) define the USG measurement of each LAM; 3) identify gaps in the literature. Material and methods. The databases MEDLINE, POL-index and Google Scholar were used to search the literature. We used a combination of terms (in Polish and English) containing the abbreviated and full names of the following expressions: ultrasound, electromyography and external oblique muscle, internal oblique muscle, or transverse abdominal muscle. Results. Nine publications fulfilled the conditions for inclusion in the analysis. These used different methodologies and test conditions, making it difficult to interpret the results of individual works. The majority demonstrated poor or no correlation between EMG and USG measurements. Conclusion. Changes in the thickness of the LAM using USG should not be equated with a change in muscle activity. To avoid misinterpretation, one should avoid the term “muscle activity” in evaluating changes in the thickness of the LAM. It is recommended that the terms “thickness change” or “morphological change” be used in the assessment of this phenomenon, which is closely related to real changes in USG imaging, expressing a more complex phenomenon than a mere change in bioelectrical potential.

Background. Structures of temporomandibular joints and ear have a common phylogenetic origin. Muscular imbalance in the area of masticatory muscles may lead to tinnitus. Objectives. A comparison of muscular tension and masticatory muscles asymmetry between women with tinnitus and without tinnitus. Material and methods. From a group of 96 examined responders, we found 32 women (aged 22 ± 2 years) who exhibited no temporomandibular joint disorders and who had not been treated otolaryngologically. The examined women were then placed within two groups: with tinnitus (16 people) and without tinnitus (16 people). Next, we examined the muscular activity in the temporomandibular muscles by way of sEMG at rest, when the teeth were clenched and when the mouth is opened maximally. To assess muscular asymmetry, the asymmetry index was used. Results. Despite the lower bioelectrical muscular tension of masticatory muscles at rest and during the examined functions in people with tinnitus, the results were not important statistically (p > 0.05). However, we observed crucial statistical differences in masseter muscle asymmetry in people with tinnitus when clenching teeth (p = 0.042), and in the number of people with muscle asymmetry in the area of the masticatory muscles at rest (p = 0.012) and when teeth are clenched (p = 0.013), in comparison to a healthy group. Conclusions. There is a relationship between changes in the asymmetry index of the masticatory muscles and the occurrence of tinnitus. In order to confirm the results, we recommend further examination in this area and longer observation time.

Introduction. Muscle strengthening to improve joint stability is widely used in the rehabilitation process, and the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation is a useful tool, but the use of Aussie current still has little documentation about its effectiveness. Aim. To verify if there is a dose-response effect to Aussie current, both in the strength and in the static and dynamic stability of the deep pelvic lumbar muscles. Material and methods. 39 volunteers divided into four groups, one control and three electrostimulation with intensity variation, one with intensity at the contraction threshold (GT), another with intensity maintained at 20% more (G20), and another with intensity maintained at 30% more (G30) than the intensity at the contraction threshold. The intervention lasted four weeks, with three weekly sessions lasting 15 minutes. Initially and after the intervention period, the strength and stability of the deep muscles of the pelvic lumbar region were measured in a static and dynamic manner by a biofeedback pressure unit. Results. There was a significant increase of pressure under the lordoses in the pre- and post-evaluation moments, there were no differences in the evaluation of indirect force (dynamic stability), but there was an increase in the time for GT. The effect sizes presented advantages for the electrostimulated groups in static stability. Conclusion. The doses used did not promote significant statistical differences, but the effects were positive for the electrostimulated groups, especially with respect to static stability.

The experiment was conducted with 60 slow-growing Hubbard JA 957 broilers and with 60 Silkies chickens reared until the 63rd day of life, in three replications, 20 birds each, in a closed building on litter. A three-stage feeding program was applied in the rearing period. Feed mixtures used in the experiment did not differ in contents of nutrients. In the first stage of rearing (till 21 days of life) the chickens were fed a standard starter feed mixture containing: 20.98% of total protein, 2,845 kcal/kg of me-tabolizable energy, 1.17% of lysine and 0.98% of met. + cys. In the period from 22 to 56 days of life they were receiving a grower type mixture containing: 20.0% of total protein, 2,900 kcal/kg of energy, 1.04% of lysine and 0.88% of met. + + cys., whereas contents of these components in the finisher type mixture administered till the end of the rearing period were as follows: 18% of protein, 2,965 kcal/kg of EM, 0.90% of lysine and 0.78% of met. + cys. On day 63 of rearing, 12 cockerels and 12 hens were selected random from each group. The birds were slaughtered in a poultry slaughter house, and specimens of their major breast muscle (m. pectoralis superficialis) and thigh muscle (biceps femoris) were sampled for analyses. The breast and leg muscles of the birds were characterized by diversified diameters of muscle fibers depending on bird genotype. The greatest diameters were found in breast and leg muscles of the slow-growing Hubbard JA 957 broilers, which was confirmed statistically (P < 0.01). It was also demonstrated that the mean diameter of muscle fibers of Silkies chickens was more than two times smaller compared to the Hubbard JA 957 chickens.

Opis:
Objectives Work-related musculoskeletal disorders in the neck and shoulder regions are common among carpet weavers. Working for prolonged hours in a static and awkward posture could result in an increased muscle activity and may lead to musculoskeletal disorders. Ergonomic workstation improvements can reduce muscle fatigue and the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Material and Methods The aim of this study is to assess and to compare upper trapezius and middle deltoid muscle activity in 2 traditional and improved design carpet weaving workstations. These 2 workstations were simulated in a laboratory and 12 women carpet weavers worked for 3 h. Electromyography (EMG) signals were recorded during work in bilateral upper trapezius and bilateral middle deltoid. The root mean square (RMS) and median frequency (MF) values were calculated and used to assess muscle load and fatigue. Repeated measure ANOVA was performed to assess the effect of independent variables on muscular activity and fatigue. The participants were asked to report shoulder region fatigue on the Borg’s Category-Ratio scale (Borg CR-10). Results Root mean square values in workstation A are significantly higher than in workstation B. Furthermore, EMG amplitude was higher in bilateral trapezius than in bilateral deltoid. However, muscle fatigue was not observed in any of the workstations. Conclusions The results of the study revealed that muscle load in a traditional workstation was high, but fatigue was not observed. Further studies investigating other muscles involved in carpet weaving tasks are recommended.

Opis:
Modern technology has created new possibilities for research in the area of regulation and control of movement. The asymmetry of muscle activity and its somatic and functional effects are rarely diagnosed in physical education and the sports activities of children and young people. The authors of this article analyse the problem of asymmetry on the basis of a representative sample of young hurdlers. Hurdling technique used in 400-m hurdles involves, among others, the necessity of clearing the hurdles with the left and right attacking leg. Differences between the two variants are mainly demonstrated based on analysis of kinematic movement structure focusing on movement of lower limbs. In this paper, the authors present differences in upper limb movement at the moment of clearing the hurdle in different forms of training. The application of EMG (electromyography) with image sequence visualisation and registration system was used to analyse the 400 m hurdling technique of eight hurdlers. The hurdlers were firstclass and champion-class hurdlers. The electromyograms concerned the work of 5 muscles of the upper limbs, symmetrically on both sides of the body (deltoideus, pectoralis major, biceps brachii, triceps brachii, latissimus dorsi). The analysis concerned three forms of hurdle training related to hurdle clearance first with the right and next with the left leg in three intensities: marching, trotting, and running at maximum speed. Muscle work on the right side of the body was analysed when clearing the hurdle with the left lower limb, and vice versa. All examined hurdlers used the left attacking leg better (regarding the specificity of 400-m hurdling). The analysis showed significant differences (p ≥ 0.05) in muscle work of the upper limbs between the right and left side of the body in respective forms of hurdle training. The right upper extremity muscle activity of three repetitions showed high correlation (r=0.89) for each performed movement form. Such relationships were not found on the left side of the body when attacking the hurdle with the right leg. Although asymmetry is inevitable in the process of lateralization of the human body, teachers at the primary stage of education should make every effort to alleviate disorders of muscle activity and dysfunction of the skeletal system. This is particularly significant in the disciplines in which it is possible to use symmetrical exercises, as a stimulus for relaxation and to avoid monotony when training children and adolescents.

Purpose: Lateral (X) and longitudinal (Y) mechanical oscillations of muscle fibers that take place during muscular contraction seem to contain information additionally to the myoelectric activity, which can contribute to the interpretation of some muscle gradation force mechanisms. However, no previous study was found that had investigated the relationship between the muscle force and features associated to the mechanomyographic (MMG) signal obtained by means of a biaxial accelerometer in three different muscles. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the force output at different load levels (20% to 100%) of the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC) and the two signals supplied by a biaxial accelerometer and, in addition, the so-called resultant (R) acceleration signal derived from the two signals mentioned previously. Twenty seven male volunteers participated in this study. Methods: The force output related to the right biceps brachii, soleus and gastrocnemius medialis muscles was studied by means of linear regression models fit to log-transformed of the root mean square (RMS) values of the MMG signals in X, Y, and R axes versus each %MVIC. The phase angle of R acceleration (PhaseR) and anthropometric data were also considered. Results: The angular coefficient a and the antilog of y-intercept b from the log-transformed of MMG data values versus force output were able to distinguish partially motor unit strategies during isometric contractions in the three muscles studied. Conclusion: The findings suggest that biaxial accelerometer seems to be an interesting approach in the assessment of muscle contraction properties.

Spasticity is one of the main causes of contracture, muscle weakness and subsequent functional incapacity. The passive static stretching can be included as having the purpose of increasing musculoskeletal flexibility, however, it also can influence the muscle torque. The objective is to verify the immediate effect of passive static stretching in the muscle strength of healthy and those who present spastic hemiparesis. There were assessed 20 subjects, 10 spastic hemiparetic (EG) and 10 healthy individuals (CG), including both sexes, aged between 22 and 78 years. The torque of extensor muscles of the knee was analyzed using isokinetic dynamometer. Results have shown that EG has less muscle torque compared to CG ( p < 0.01). In addition, EG presented a decrease in significance of muscle torque after stretching ( p < 0.05), however, it has not shown significant alteration in muscle torque of CG after performing the program that was prescribed. Immediately after the passive stretch, a significant torque decrease can be seen in hypertonic muscle; it is believed that this reduction may be associated with the physiological overlap between actin and myosin filaments and so preventing the muscle to develop a maximum contraction.

The study was conducted on 300 turkey cocks type BUT-9, grown under optimal conditions for this kind of poultry. The feed was a typical commercial full-dose mix for turkeys. The birds were divided into 5 experimental groups. From the 3rd week of their life, they were given preparations with their drinking water. Group I was the control group, while drinking water for the test groups was enriched as follows: lactic acid (0.4%) for group II, CuSO4 in the amount of 30 mg Cu·dm-3 H2O for group III, CuSO4 (30 mg Cu-dm-3) and 0.4% of lactic acid for group IV and CuSO4 in the amount of 50 mg Cu·dm-3 for group V. Application of the preparations was terminated after 3 days, when symptoms of poisoning were observed in turkey cocks of groups II and IV, alongside increased mortality rate. Samples of drinking water were taken for analyses, and from each group 10 birds were selected for slaughter to take tissue samples (breast and leg muscles). The objective of the experiments was to determine the concentration of Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu and Fe in the consumable tissues of turkey cocks. The study showed that the highest rate of mortality of turkey cocks was observed in the group that was given lactic acid with their drinking water, and these turkeys had increased levels of Ca, Cu, Zn and Fe. In none of the groups, the content of Zn in the breast muscle exceeded 20 mg kg-1, while the concentration of copper in all experimental groups (except the control) was above the level of 10 mg kg-1. Increased doses of copper caused an increase in the concentration of magnesium in the leg muscles, while a combination of copper supplementation with lactic acid resulted in increased accumulation of Cu in both the breast and leg muscles.
Grupa I była grupą kontrolną, grupa II otrzymywała do picia wodę z kwasem mlekowym (0,4%), grupa III otrzymywała do wody pitnej dodatek CuSO4 w ilości 30 mg Cu·dm-3 H2O, grupa IV — dodatek CuSO4 (30 mg Cu-dm-3) i 0,4% kwasu mlekowego, grupa V — dodatek CuSO4 w ilości 50 mg Cu·dm—3. W badaniach stwierdzono, że najwięcej padnięć indorów zaobserwowano w grupie otrzymującej dodatek kwasu mlekowego do wody pitnej, w której stwierdzono zwiększone ilości Ca, Cu, Zn i Fe. W mięśniu piersiowym indorów ze wszystkich grup zawartość Zn nie przekraczała 20 mg kg-1, natomiast kumulacja miedzi we wszystkich grupach doświadczalnych, oprócz kontrolnej, przekraczała 10 mg kg-1. Zwiększone dawki miedzi wpłynęły na podwyższenie koncentracji magnezu w mięśniu udowym, a suplementacja miedzi z kwasem mlekowym spowodowała wzrost kumulacji Cu w mięśniach piersiowym i udowym.

Opis:
This study deals with a gap between science and practice in the testing of core stability and strength and presents our approach to solving this issue. Typical core stability tests require the subject to maintain a neutral spinal posture while under load in a quadrupedal or supine position and assess the endurance of global core muscles. However, most of these non-dynamometric tests have been developed for use in clinical and research settings. A suitable alternative represents torsional tests performed under stable or unstable conditions and instrumented tests in the form of trunk repositioning and load release tasks. Core strength is measured in terms of how much weight can be lifted, how many repetitions can be performed, or how long a neutral stable position can be maintained. In the laboratory, isometric and isokinetic dynamometers are frequently used. Isometric strength measurements are usually recommended as a standard for lifting tasks. However, such measurements underestimate the loads on the spine during dynamic movement. A deadlift to high pull exercise that involves working major muscle groups in the upper and lower body may best simulate the demands of jobs comprising of lifting tasks. Furthermore, isokinetic loading does not occur in daily human activities and is not specific to the requirements of sports. Given that rotational power is a better predictor of athlete performance, the test adapted from the wood chop exercise on a weight stack machine may provide conditions imposed by sports. One can also use a system that allows evaluation of muscle power during seated or standing trunk rotations with a barbell placed on the shoulders. These tests utilizing portable diagnostic systems may be implemented in functional diagnostics for athletes and sedentary or manual workers whose activities involve lifting tasks or trunk rotations under unloading or loading conditions; so complementing existing testing methods.

The role of glutathione-S-transferase (GST, EC 2.5.1.18) in biochemical host defence in experimental trichinellosis was evaluated. The activity of GST in mouse skeletal muscles was measured during the muscular phase of trichinellosis, starting from the 3rd week post infection (w.p.i.) to the 11th w.p.i. Activity was determined spectrophotometrically by monitoring the formation of thioether (S-2,4-dinitrophenylglutathione) from the reduced form of glutathione and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene used as a substrate and as an example of xenobiotics. The changes in the activity of GST were as follows: an increase in activity starts in the 4th w.p.i., peaks (up to 310% of the normal value) in the 6th w.p.i., decreases in the 8th week and a final, weak rise was observed in week 11. The statistically significant changes in GST activity in this phase of experimental trichinellosis suggest that this enzyme participates in the biochemical defence of the host against Trichinella infection.

The aim of this study was to assess handgrip and 5 other types of force in 52 women and to determine if handgrip force reflected general upper limb force capabilities correlated with age. The women were divided into subgroups according to age: 20–25, 45–50 and 55–65 years. Maximum forces of the right upper limb were measured in 6 types of force activities. In most tests the values of force showed statistically significant differences between the 20–25 group and the groups aged 45–50 and 55–64 years. The results did not show any differences related to age or to force activities that involved the small muscles of the forearms and hands. Thus handgrip force cannot always be considered an indicator of total force capabilities.

AMP-deaminase from hen stomach smooth muscle was isolated and physico-chemical properties of the purified enzyme were investigated. The enzyme had an activity optimum at pH 6.5, and poorly deaminated the substrate analogues tested. At optimum pH (6.5), in the absence of regulatory ligands (control conditions), the enzyme manifested hyperbolic substrate-saturation kinetics with half-saturation constant (S0.5) of about 4.5 mM. Additions of adenine nucleotide effectors (ATP, ADP) activated the enzyme strongly at all the concentrations tested, diminishing significantly the value of S0.5 constant. In contrast, the regulatory effect of orthophosphate was variable, and depended on the orthophosphate concentration used. The molecular mass of the enzyme subunit determined in SDS/PAG electrophoresis was about of 37 kDa. The obtained results suggest that in different types of hen muscle, similarly as in humans and rats, expression of AMP-deaminase is under the control of independent genes.

Introduction. In exercise, vibrations are performed in order to produce rapid and short changes in muscle length. These changes are detected by sensory receptors, in response try to dampen the vibratory waves through a modulation of muscle stiffness. However, its effects on the morphology of muscle tissue are still not fully established, especially after long periods of immobilization. Aim. To compare the effects of the vibratory platform on the remobilization of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle of Wistar rats with free remobilization. Material and methods. 20 rats were divided into: CG (Control), IG (immobilized), IFG (immobilization and free remobilization), IPG (immobilization and remobilization with vibratory platform). The immobilization was performed on the pelvic limb for 15 days. The remobilization with vibratory platform was done for 10 minutes daily, for 2 weeks. The EDL was processed for histological analysis of cross-sections. Results. The area, larger diameter, smaller diameter and fiber density of the EDL muscle of GI presented significant alteration when opposed to CG, IFG and IPG. The density of nuclei of the EDL muscle of IG presented a significant increase when opposed to the others, and IPG also presented a significant increase when compared to CG. Conclusion. The morphology and morphometry of the EDL muscle tissue were affected, and both free and vibration platform remobilization re-established the morphological aspects of the muscle fiber, without significant differences between the methods.

A thermal distribution provides useful information of physiological and pathological processes. However, only a static thermography was applied in the most of medical studies. This paper shows an example of application of a dynamic thermography to study a physiological activity of a skeletal muscle. The goal of the presented work was to study a putative relationship between mechanical and thermal activity of the quadriceps during a static submaximal load. During a strain a dynamic temperature distribution on a thigh surface and a force moment of a knee erector were registered. The performed analysis used a time-dependent mean temperature, a time-dependent standard deviation and an impulse of a force moment. Moreover, we analyzed of autocorrelation functions to compare the dynamics of these parameters. Finally, we showed the nonlinear, statistically significant relationship between spatial-temporal variability of temperature and the force developing by a concentrative contracted quadriceps. A possible biological interpretation of the identified relation is also proposed taking the described mathematical model of muscle heat transfer into account.

Fifteen healthy young male subjects from the Northwestern Polytechnical University participated in the test. The test consisted of assuming 4 different postures and maintaining each of them for 60 s. The 4 postures varied in terms of dumbbell weights, standing for the hand-tools weight: W1 was 0.48 kg and W2 was 0.75 kg; the 4 shoulder postures were shoulder flexions of 150°, 120°, 90°, and 60°, combined with an included elbow angle of 180°, 150°, 120° and 90°, respectively. The experimental sequences were randomly selected. The signals of SEMG and the values of PLD in the shoulder girdle were recorded in 60 s. All subjects completed the whole test. The repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to ascertain differences between dumbbell weight (0.48 kg and 0.75 kg) and shoulder postures (150°/180°, 120°/150°, 90°/120° and 60°/90°). The Friedman test was utilized to determine the significant differences for UT(PLD) and MD(PLD) on shoulder postures. Spearman’s correlation was used to analyze the relationship between the subjective and objective measurements. Results Significant correlational relationships existed between the UT percentage of the maximal voluntary electrical activation (%MVE) and UT(PLD) (r = 0.459, p < 0.01), between MD(%MVE) and MD(PLD) (r = 0.821, p < 0.01). The results showed that SEMG and PLD of the 4 postures under analysis differed significantly (p < 0.05). Conclusions It was indicated that posture T4 (shoulder forward flexion 60° and included elbow angle 90°) resulted in the lowest fatigue, both in terms of the objective measure and the subjective perception, which meant that this posture was more ergonomic. Opis:
The study assesses the effects of a six-week plyometric training program (PT) on muscle stiffness in the dominant and non-dominant leg in male collegiate volleyball players. The study group comprised 16 volleyball players who had played collegiate volleyball for at least four years. For six consecutive weeks, twice a week, the players undertook a plyometric program of 60-min training sessions, each preceded with a specialist warm-up. The analysis of the anterior muscles of the right and the left lower leg revealed a significant increase in stiffness in the muscles of the right leg and the left leg. No significant differences were found between the anterior muscles of the left lower leg and the right lower leg in particular weeks of the training program. The analysis of the posterior lower leg muscles revealed no significant differences, either in the consecutive weekly training microcycles or between the left leg and the right leg. The measurement of muscle tone and biomechanical properties of muscles can be used as a fast and direct assessment of plyometric training-related muscle fatigue. A similar level of muscle stiffness in both lower legs (symmetry) is a reflection of the appropriate selection of plyometric training loads.

Opis:
Introduction: Patient-reported outcome measures have been used within the otorhinolaryngologic disorders’ field for many years to compare patient’s perception of the severity of symptoms and the effectiveness of a therapeutic approach. Questionnaires that evaluate dysphagia are relatively complex instruments aimed mostly at patients with neurological or malignant diseases. The ICD-10 classification specifies only one broad term – dysphagia (R13). Introduction of Muscle Tension Dysphagia (MTDg) in 2016 by Kang completed the spectrum of the nomenclature. This dysphagia type is defined as a type of laryngeal muscle tension disorder manifesting primarily as swallowing difficulty with or without any accompanying organic cause, laryngeal hyperresponsiveness and/or nonspecific laryngeal inflammation. Aim: Since there were no clear diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives on the group of patients with MTDg, the aim of this work was to analyse selected diagnostic tools used for the evaluation of swallowing disorders in the context of finding the most suitable tools for patients with Muscle Tension Dysphagia. Material and method: The material of the work included 61 patients. Each patient underwent otolaryngologic, phoniatric and speech therapist’s examination, Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and filled out questionnaires concerning dysphonia and dysphagia symptoms. Results: The results of the work showed that patients with MTDg were characterised by correct results of FEES examination, prolonged swallowing, features of inappropriate mucous and oropharyngeal muscle function. Conclusions: The Swallowing Disorder Scale (SDS), developed by the authors, correlated best with the cause of dysphagia. The questionnaire corresponded well with the degree of severity. In the diagnostic process of MTDg one of the key tasks is the differentiation with patients with non-normative swallowing patterns. Apart from specialistic consultations with otolaryngologist and speech therapist, while diagnosing MTDg we recommend using objective (FEES, videofluroscopy, SEMG) and subjective (SDS, DHI, EAT-10 surveys) assessment tools. In our opinion, the inclusion of questionnaires to detect reflux syndromes is also important in the causal treatment of ailments.

Opis:
The paper presents a continuation of studies on the influence of increased ambient pressure on the eye-muscle reflex. Using the same methods, the research was carried out in real conditions, i.e. during dives in water. Dives were performed in classical equipment with air as a breathing mix at depths of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 m. It was found that statistically significant differences in the time of eye-muscle reflexes occur during the transition from 0 to 10, from 40 to 50 and 50 to 60 meters of overpressure. In the conclusions, it was found that the prolongation of reflex time is much greater than in hyperbaric chamber studies. As in previous studies, toxic effects of components of the breathing mixture, especially nitrogen, were considered the main cause.

Miozyny to oddziałujące z aktyną białka motoryczne, zaangażowane w skurcz mięśni, migrację komórek i transport wewnątrzkomórkowy.
Myosins, actin-dependent molecular motors, are engaged in muscle contraction, cell migration and intracellular transport. They are present in all eukaryotic organisms including protists and plants. They are composed of one or two heavy chains, and a number of light chains (1-7 per a heavy chain). Several thousands of myosin heavy chains have been sequenced in hundreds of species. The heavy chain is composed of a motor domain (with actin and ATP binding sites), a neck with IQ motifs (where light chains bind to) and a tail (with domains determining specific functions of a given myosin). A myosin superfamily is divided into over 30 families based on differences in the motor domain primary sequence. Twelve families represented by 40 isoforms are expressed in humans. Well known muscle myosins forming a family II are termed as conventional while all others are termed as unconventional. The article describes the myosin superfamily with emphasis on structure and function of unconventional myosins present in myogenic cells and striated muscles.

Unplanned gait termination (UGT) widely occurs in various sports and daily life as a kind of stress response to unexpected stimulus. However, the body stability may be greatly affected when the body completely stops. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between muscle strength levels and body stability during UGT through comparing the plantar pressure. Methods: Twenty healthy participants (10 male and 10 female) with different lower limbs muscle strength and power were asked to perform planned gait termination (PGT) and unplanned gait termination (UGT) on an 8-m walkway. Related plantar pressure data including maximum pressure, maximum force, contact area and center of pressure were recorded with Footscan pressure platform. Results: Two types of gait termination have significant differences in the plantar pressure distribution. Maximum pressure and maximum force in the lateral metatarsal increased significantly during UGT, compared to PGT. At the same time, data from the current study suggested that there might be a correlation between the muscle strength levels of individual and the stability during the gait termination, especially between the muscle power and UGT, which means that the more excellent muscle power an individual has, the more stable the body is when UGT is performed. Conclusions: The findings suggest that different muscle strength levels could affect stability during unplanned gait termination.

Opis:
Introduction: In this study, strength and endurance of the trunk muscles were assessed in patients with spondyloarthrosis of the lower spine. Material and methods: 52 women and 49 men with low back pain syndrome (LBPS) were enrolled into the study. The muscle strength of the flexors and extensors of the trunk was determined by calculation of the maximum (MT) and relative torque (RT) during an isometric contraction. Evaluation of endurance of the extensors used calculation of the regression coefficient of the strength reduction during the testing of maximum strength capability. The obtained results were compared to results obtained in healthy persons. Moreover, the relation of those parameters to age, body-mass index – BMI (describing somatic habitus) and the Oswestry Disability Index – ODI (describing pain intensity during activities of daily living) was assessed. Separate analyses were conducted for the groups of males and females. Results: Based on the conducted study and the performed analyses, it can be stated that in patients with chronic low back pain syndrome there is a marked reduction in trunk muscle strength as compared to healthy persons. For females, the reduction ranged from 45% (flexors) to 48% (extensors) for absolute maximum torque values, while for relative values (RT) – from 51% (flexors) to 56% (extensors). In men, the strength reduction of abdominal and back muscles was smaller and was approximately 40% (for MT and RT). Because of such differences in the strength of the back muscles and methodological reasons, endurance variables were not compared. Reduction in trunk muscle strength is primarily due to the pain syndrome and does not depend on patients’ age or habitus. Lower muscle strength can affect the intensity of spinal pain during every-day activities. Conclusions: Precise determination of strength and endurance of the trunk muscles and the appropriate selection of methods of their reinforcement should constitute one of the principal aims of rehabilitation treatment in patients with low back pain.

Opis:
Background. Dysfunction of the masticatory muscle group occurs in all types of masticatory system pathology. This is sometimes associated with changes in the musculoskeletal system, which are manifested in hypertension and hypotonia of the masticatory group of muscles, that cause a decrease in occlusal height. Material and methods. There were 123 patients enrolled, aged 35-54 years, who were made temporary fixed, fiberglass-reinforced plastic prostheses for the upper or lower jaw. There are several methods to improve the quality of orthopedic treatment with fixed bridges with reduced occlusal height, considering the condition of the masticatory muscles. One is the use of temporary fixed structures that provide a gradual increase in occlusal height, allow muscles to adapt to new conditions, and promote restructuring of “usual” myostatic reflexes. Results. To examine the effect of fixed structures on the m. masseter and m. temporalis, a technology for the manufacture of advanced temporary bridges was developed. This allowed us to study the process of masticatory muscle group adaptation to fixed orthopedic structures kept on the abutment teeth of patients without fractures for 6 months. In addition, it was possible to prepare the dental and maxillofacial system for permanent orthopedic treatment. Conclusions. Determination of the average total values of m. masseter and m. temporalis allowed us to establish the most effective intervention for patients with reduced occlusion height before, 1 month, and 6 months after temporary orthopedic treatment. There was a tendency for patients of all groups to approach the absolute symmetry.
Wprowadzenie. Dysfunkcja grupy mięśni żucia występuje we wszystkich rodzajach patologii układu żucia. Jest to niekiedy związane ze zmianami w układzie mięśniowo-szkieletowym, które objawiają się hipertensją i hipotonią grupy mięśni żucia, które powodują obniżenie wysokości zgryzu. Materiał i metody. Wyniki. W celu zbadania wpływu stałych struktur na mięśnie żwaczy i mięśnie skroniowe, opracowano technologię wytwarzania zaawansowanych mostów tymczasowych. To pozwoliło na zbadanie procesu adaptacji grupy mięśni żucia do stałych struktur ortopedycznych pozostawionych na zębach filarowych u pacjentów bez pęknięć przez okres 6 miesięcy. Ponadto stało się możliwe przygotowanie układu stomatologicznego i szczękowo-twarzowego do stałego leczenia ortopedycznego. Wnioski. Wyznaczenie średnich wartości całkowitych mięśni żwaczy i mięśni skroniowych pozwoliło na ustalenie najkorzystniejszego zabiegu dla pacjentów z obniżoną wysokością zgryzu przed leczeniem, 1 miesiąc i 6 miesięcy po tymczasowym leczeniu ortopedycznym. U pacjentów wszystkich grup zaobserwowano tendencję do zbliżania się do symetrii bezwzględnej.

Introduction. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic, autoimmune inflammatory disease of unknown origin, mainly affecting synovial joints and related structures, including the adjacent musculature, generating great disability and reduction in quality of life. Aim. This study was designed to investigate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on gastrocnemius of Wistar rats subjected to an experimental model of RA. Material and methods. Forty male Wistar rats were used, separated into: acute and chronic, being subdivided into Control Group (CG): without intervention, Lesion Group (LG): submitted to lesion, Laser Control Group (LCG): without lesion and with treatment, and Laser Lesion Group (LLG): submitted to lesion and LLLT. The treatment with LLLT occurred in four points of the right knee, wavelength of 660 nm, energy density of 5 J/cm², energy per point of 0.003 J. Morphometric analysis was performed using a 40x magnification photomicrograph and analyzed using the Image-Pro-Plus 6.0 program. Results. As result of the acute group there was a difference only for muscle mass, being higher in CG. For the chronic group there was significant difference for cross-sectional area, larger and smaller diameter, again with the control group obtaining higher values than the others, for the number of nuclei LG was lower than CG and LCG, but LLG was not different from any of them. Conclusion. It is concluded that treatment with LLLT was not very effective in reversing the harmful effects of RA on the gastrocnemius muscle.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to estimate the effectiveness of kinesiotaping (KT) in the reduction of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) of the quadriceps femoris. 41 young women were examined. In the study, two groups applied kinesiotaping - the first with a relaxing application (Group 1); and the second with a lymphatic one (Group 2). Women from the control group used no treatment to help in the exertion restitution. All of the women performed a vertical jump test and training of their lower limbs (5 series of squat jumps). The research tools were the VAS scale (for the estimation of pain) and the Borg Scale (for a subjective estimation of the intensity of effort). The measurements (the vertical jump test and the intensification of the pain) were repeated 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after the training where the exertion occurred. In all of the groups, the greatest regress of the vertical jump test was observed between the first and the second measurement - and this difference was statistically essential (p<0.01). The least fall in power was noticed in the women who had received the lymphatic KT application; while the greatest fall in results of vertical jump test was observed in the persons with the KT relaxing application. The greatest level of pain in Groups 1 and 2 was noted during the second measurement, which was 24 hours after the training; whereas in the control group, the greatest pain was observed in the third measurement. It can be concluded that the kinesiotaping has a bearing on the acceleration of the regeneration and increased the efficiency of the examined muscles.

Opis:
The sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) isoforms are normally expressed in coordination with the corresponding myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms in the fibers of skeletal muscle but this coordination is often disrupted in pathological conditions. In the streptozotocin-induced diabetes of rats (stz-rats), the soleus muscle showed peripheral neuropathy and the SERCA2a level decreased in type I (slow-oxidative) fibers compared to the control muscles, whereas the expression of the corresponding slow MyHC1 did not change. No difference was found at the mRNA and protein levels of SERCA and MyHC isoforms in the whole soleus, except that the level of the SERCA2a protein specifically declined in stz-rats compared to the controls. This shows that the coordinated expression of SERCA2a and MyHC1 is disrupted at the SERCA2a protein level in the diabetic soleus. The results are in line with previous observations that regulators of the Ca-homeostasis may adapt faster to type I diabetes than the contractile elements.

Opis:
Previously we have shown that aldolase (ALD; EC 4.1.2.13) is present in cardiomyocyte nuclei. Now, we focused our attention on ALD localization in smooth muscle cells. Immunocytochemical methods were used to study the subcellular localization of ALD. Aldolase was localized in the cytoplasm as well as in the nuclei. Within the nuclei ALD was located in the heterochromatin region. Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by aldolase activity staining in gel was used to study the ALD isoenzyme pattern in porcine smooth muscle cells. Two ALD isoenzymes, A and C, were found in these cells but in the nuclei only the muscle isoenzyme was detected. To support the nuclear localization of ALD, measurement of aldolase activity in the smooth muscle cell nuclei isolated from porcine stomach was performed. The ALD activity in the isolated nuclei was detectable only after preincubation of the nuclear fraction with Triton X-100 and high concentration of KCl.

Opis:
The aim of our 10-week-long experiment was to investigate the impact of training with additional dead space (DS) on spirometry and exercise respiration. Respiratory muscle training is applied to the development exercise capacity. Twenty cyclists were assigned to two groups: the experimental (E) and the control (C). All of them carried on with their initial training programme. During endurance trainings (twice per week) group E used additional DS (1000 cm3). Immediatelly before and after the experiment each participant was submitted to a spirometry and a continuous test. The spirometry test measured peak inspiratory (PIF) and expiratory (PEF) flows, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). The continuous test measured tidal volume (TV), respiratory frequency (RF), along with inspiration and expiration times. Our experiment demonstrated TV increase and RF decrease in both groups. In addition, the TV value was significantly higher in group E than in C. The PIF value also increased significantly, PEF and FEV1 upward trend was observed in group E only. We concluded the additional respiratory DS used in the experimental group provoked an increase of airflow observed in the spirometry tests at rest and during intensive aerobic exercise.

Opis:
Pre-processing of mammograms is a crucial step in computer-aided analysis systems. The aim of segmentation is to extract a breast region by estimation of a breast skin-line and a pectoral muscle as well as removing radiographic artifacts and the background of the mammogram. Knowledge of the breast contour also allows further analysis of breast abnormalities such as bilateral asymmetry. In this paper we propose a fully automatic algorithm for segmentation of a breast region, based on two types of global image thresholding: the multi-level Otsu and minimizing the measure of fuzziness as well as the gradient estimation and linear regression. The results of our experiments showed that our method can be used to find a breast line and a pectoral muscle accurately

Opis:
Materials undergoing deformation based on various mechanisms are frequently applied to manufacturing of artificial muscle actuators. In this paper we introduce a methodological step towards more precise determination of investigation object related to such actuators. One defines a deformable cell and a deformable tissue in order to indicate which functions of such objects should be integrated for further applications. One accentuates role of nanoscale models of mechanics of materials as important on way towards design of the deformable cells.
