Opis:
Poetycka spuścizna Franciszki Urszuli Radziwiłł (1705-1753) jest  mniej znana niż jej utwory dramatyczne. Autorka artykułu, podobnie jak znani białoruscy uczeni, m.in. A. Maldzis i Ż.

EUROPEAN GLOSSARY
EUROPEAN MULTILINGUALISM
INTERNATIONALISATION OF THE LEXICON
Opis:
At the Conference 'Multilingualism in the enlarged European Union' (Vienna 2001) several speakers prognosticated a consequent enrichment and modernization of the languages in the new member states and expected this process to follow the same or similar ways of adaptation. On the basis of these expectations this paper deals with a specific area of the EU lexicon, the so called Eurojargon, whose harmonization could be considered a special aim. The 'Plain language guide' to Eurojargon (http://europa.eu/abc/eurojargon/index_en.htm) contains 80 entries and is available in each official language of the EU, whereas the 'European Glossary' contains only the 'old' member languages (before enlargement in 2004). As opposed to the 'European Glossary' with its 200 terms, which is interactive, the 'Plain language guide' (with the exception of about 10 terms taken over from the glossary) is not and can therefore not be used as a bi- or multilingual dictionary. That is the reason why the author of this paper has compiled lists of equivalents, including English, French, German and the four Slavonic EU-languages (Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovene). This paper is dealing with the mutuality and differences of the keywords (internationalisms, loans/calques, analytic denominations, abbreviations, metaphors) and briefly with the definitions of selected examples. In conclusion we can state that the prognosticated assimilation undoubtedly takes place on the level of concept formation (on the semantic level), but a formal internationalization is not dominant. The formation of equivalents is largely based on traditional patterns, including semantic change. Thus the Eurojargon can be regarded as an example of linguistic diversity in conceptual unity and is in no way dominated by English to such an extent as other domains of the modern lexicon.

The current Polish tendencies to promote only English language in primary schools and various constraints in the „building of multilingualism friendly environment” in early education call for an urgent action. To meet European appeals for multilingualism from an early age, two languages could be introduced in kindergartens and schools even in the present reality. This would require a new approach to teacher training, teacher co-operation, good administrative decisions, co-operation with parents, and integrated teaching. These statements will be illustrated by positive examples taken from the life of a kindergarten and a primary school in Toruń and Gdańsk, Poland.

The paper focuses on the discussion on the development of multilingualism in Polish educational context whose distinctive features are: the domination of the Polish language, low percentage of immigrants, and relatively sparse national minorities. Because of this evident distinctness of the Polish situation in the aforementioned domain, the didactic proposals prepared within European projects are analyzed in a critical way. Moreover, an attempt is undertaken to define the aims and the motivation that would take into consideration the characteristics of Polish educational context. On the basis of the definition of multilingual competence, the article aims to define certain basic foundations of multilingual education in Polish schools. Among other proposals, the central one is a postulate of departing from „monolingual methodics” that is from teaching successive languages in isolation from other learned languages (the native tongue included).

The concept of affordances originating in Gibson’s work (Gibson, 1977) is gaining ground in multilingualism studies (cf. Aronin and Singleton, 2010; Singleton and Aronin, 2007; Dewaele, 2010). Nevertheless, studies investigating affordances in respect of teaching, learning or using languages are still somewhat rare and tend to treat isolated aspects of multilingualism. This is despite the fact that the theory of affordances can actually provide a valuable, supplementary, up-to-date framework within which a clearer, sharper description and explication of the intriguing range of attributes of multilingual communities, educational institutions and individuals, as well as teaching practices, become feasible. It is important that not only researchers and practitioners (teachers, educators, parents, community and political actors) but also language users and learners themselves should be aware of how to identify or, if necessary, design new affordances for language acquisition and learning. The aim of this article is to adapt the concept of affordances to multilingualism studies and additional language teaching, and in so doing advance theoretical understanding in this context. To this end the article contains a brief summary of the findings so far available. The article also goes further into defining the ways of how affordances work in relation to multilingualism and second language teaching and puts forward an integrated model of affordances.

The use of a reduced verbal system as ELF English as a lingua franca in the sciences does not appear to be a perfectly adequate way of expressing cultural identities. A modern society should instead enforce, through instruction, the understanding of several national cultural scripts, one’s own and others, and the understanding of the way communication and languages works. Multilingualism and interculture in the scientific world can be made possible by the digital world and its new editorial products.

This article discusses the results of an analysis of the functioning of the psycholinguistic phenomenon of inter-language communication within Slavonic languages. A particular emphasis is put to one of the key elements of this phenomenon, i.e., the dysfunction in and disturbance to the perception of delimitation of distinctive and delimitative functions of phonological features that in the initial stage of the language contact result in an obstruction to the functioning of cognitive mechanisms (responsible for processing the meaning of common or analogous morphemes and lexemes occurring in a linguistic system closely related to the Polish language). The experiments described in the article provided reliable data to determine and document not only the reasons behind the occurrence of these problems in understanding utterances (communiques) in some other Slavonic languages, relatively easy to overcome, but also to indicate the disproportion, commonly perceived, between the productive and receptive competence – with the example of the experiment participants involved in thus embedded glottodidactical process.

The oral character inherent to a theatre and the hybrid or multilingual character of modern French Canadian literature invests it with functions that pertain strictly to the spoken word and that translator must take into account. This paper examines translation strategies proposed and applied in English and Standard-French translations of the play "Le Chien", written by Franco-Ontarian playwright Jean-Marc Dalpé. In the play "Le Chien" the hybrid character of language and abundance of swearwords constitutes a symptom of inability to communicate of protagonists and animality of their discourse. This specificity, crucial in terms of interpretation of the play, is the major obstacle in translator’s work because he needs to target the specific, English and French-speaking audience which is unilingual and doesn’t have the same cultural experience.

Affectivity is an important dimension in humans’ social and individual lives. It is either a stimulating or hindering aspect of language learning. This article aims to draw attention to material culture as a powerful, but mostly neglected source of data on the use and acquisition of languages, and demonstrates the close and intricate links between affectivity and material culture. It is hoped that revealing these interrelationships will assist in understanding and managing language diversity. It will allow practitioners and teachers to carry out social and private encounters, events and language teaching with more care, understanding and expertise. Researchers will be encouraged to join the investigation of yet one more important facet of multilingualism – material culture.

However, the use of translation also has some limitations which should be taken into account and, if necessary, it should be combined with other research tools.

The recent migration flows have changed the linguistic balance in some European countries that are more exposed than others. Italy is among them. The Barcelona Agreement states basic rights for the promotion of all linguistic varieties, but language differences may represent a barrier to human promotion. Unfortunately, immigrant students in Italian schools accumulate delays in their career, even if they are of second generation (born in Italy), and this is due to hindering linguistic competences. Thus the teaching of Italian as a foreign language at school in such a situation of new multilingualism requires the activation of dynamic teaching techniques more oriented to communicative skills than to grammatical rigor.

In the second part meanings ascribed to the promotion of multilingualism are analysed from the language perspective together with the use made of them in the field of social and political activity. Promoting multilingualism is then looked at from the perspectives of the learner and the teacher. Implications are finally sought for teaching, learning and assessment in language education.
