Opis:
The main purpose of this study was to research the extent to which viewers could recognize epidemic-themed movies based on the semantic and affective signals contained in the translated movie titles. The analysis revealed that viewers would find information about the epidemic in each of the examined language versions (i.e. German, Polish, and Russian) to at least the same extent as they did in the original version(usually English). The task of German-speaking viewers is the easiest one as the majority of translated titles contain clear semantic signals. Polish and Russian viewers receive slightly fewer such signals. All three language versions contain a similar number of affective signals adequate to the film genres: disaster film, science fiction, and thriller.

The purpose of the paper is an analysis of the advantages and limitations of the use of translanguaging, or the mobilisation of students’ whole multilingual repertoires to facilitate understanding and learning (Lewis, Jones, Baker, 2012, p. 655), in the teaching of third or additional languages (De Angelis’s (2007) term) at the university level. The paper is based on two studies by the [name deleted to maintain the integrity of the review process], on the use of translanguaging in the teaching of Spanish [name deleted to maintain the integrity of the review process] and French [name deleted to maintain the integrity of the review process]. It analyses the use of translanguaging for the purposes of explanation and awareness-raising, taking into consideration the increased language learning experience and awareness of multilingual students (cf. Hufeisen, 2018), and its perception by the students. However, despite its advantages, it also has limitations related to students’ lack of experience with translanguaging and unwillingness to use their multilingual repertoires in learning particular languages.

Application of multilingual corpus in contrastive studies (on the example of the Bulgarian-Polish-Lithuanian parallel corpus)In this paper we present applications of a trilingual corpus in language research. Comparative and contrastive studies of Polish and Bulgarian as well as Polish and Lithuanian have been already conducted, but up to the best of our knowledge no such studies exist for Bulgarian and Lithuanian. On the one hand, it is interesting to note that two Slavic languages are compared to a Baltic language (Lithuanian). On the other hand, the three languages are marginally present in the EU because of the later ascension of the three countries to the EU. The paper shortly describes the first electronic Bulgarian–Polish–Lithuanian experimental corpus, currently under development only for research. We also focus our attention on the morphosyntactic annotation of the parallel trilingual corpus according to the Corpus Encoding Standard: we present a review of the Part-of-Speech (POS) classification of the participle in the three languages – Bulgarian, Polish, and Lithuanian in comparison to another POS, the adjective. We briefly discuss tagsets for corpus annotation from the point of view of possible unification in the future with some examples.

“How Come We Don’t Deliver?” asks Elana Shohamy in the title of her paper on imagined multilingual schools and tackles the striking issue in education: the need for a paradigm shift towards a multilingual approach. This paper focuses on the role of immigrant teachers in this process. Based on the sociolinguistic framework of linguistic markets and the pedagogical framework of professionalization, it presents a qualitative study on teachers’ language beliefs. Using linguistic biographies, this study reconstructs how beliefs towards multilingualism emerge and develop under different educational settings. The findings indicate significant deviations in the perception of multilingualism and showcase deep insights into the development of these perceptions over time. The results reveal the importance of socio-political setting and contribute to a reflected understanding of linguistic diversity management in multilingual education and the need for teacher professionalization.

Language is the primary mode of human expression. Language delineates humans from other animals. With the use of language in its oral and written form, humans are able to communicate and express their feelings within the cultural norms. In essence, language is a mean or process of understanding the experience, ideas, and emotions. Since French is a language, it performs all functions that human languages perform such as communicative, interactive, diplomatic and informative functions. These functions have an impact positively on sustainable human development of the country. In spite of the benefits that the Nigeria citizenry are to derive while learning French language, there are many obstacles on its way such as government attitude towards the language, learning environment, lack of infrastructures, lack of motivation, jobless-ness of the students, etc. Hence, the analysis of the benefits and obstacles of learning French language in Nigeria and recommendation of ways alleviate the obstacles of learning French Language in Nigeria is what this paper has set out to achieve.

Inside Baseball: Coverage, quality, and culture in the Global WordNetThe Global WordNet is succeeding in producing relatively open linguistic data that is coordinated to a degree among numerous languages. The project has grown organically, with no overall plan or direction. The result is a certain amount of incoherence in determining what items should be treated in wordnets, and how the various wordnets should aspire to consistent quality. Using the example of terms related to baseball, which constitute a non-trivial portion of the Princeton WordNet, this paper discusses problems of coverage selection both for English and for other languages, as well as methods to improve quality and depth through public review of current content, and contribution of missing terms and definitions. It is proposed that proper names be removed entirely from WordNet and treated as a separate project, and that individual languages produce annexes of indigenous concepts that can be readily considered within sister projects as a supplement to the Anglo-American weighting of the current endeavor. To produce a consistent product that transmits inter-intelligible understanding at a high level across languages, it is proposed that an open committee of interested stakeholders convene to consider the project's goals and develop a roadmap for how to achieve them. Baseball dla zaawansowanych: pokrycie leksykalne, jakość i kultura w Global WordNetGlobal WordNet z powodzeniem tworzy stosunkowo otwarte dane językowe, do pewnego stopnia powiązane pomiędzy wieloma językami.

The paper discusses key educational issues related to the processes of decision-making and continuous teacher development at the level of the national (educational) authorities in Greece and Poland, regarding the urgency of the needs arising from the intensifying migration in the EU over the last two decades, and in view of the research conducted within the MaMLiSE project. The paper begins by reporting the official decisions and policies which laid the grounds for tackling the considerable linguistic variety that now characterises the school populations in each country, caused by the phenomenon of migration, and with refugee flows included. In addition, country-specific methods and resources used to produce educational materials for pupils from a migration background are presented. Finally, the available educational materials and their suitability to the specificity of each country’s current educational conditions are discussed. The concluding remarks are that a strong need is currently emerging for 1) nominating key-points in the pre- and in-service training of teachers with regard to multilingual classroom management, intercultural awareness and language sensitive subject teaching, 2) extrapolating common features necessary for the production of educational material (e.g. adaptability to new conditions, ease and flexibility of use in class, allowing translanguaging practices), and 3) negotiating shared educational principles (e.g. assessment framework, constructive use of language heritages at schools).

This paper concerns the situation of multilingualism in Spain, with particular emphasis on its legal regulations. Nowadays around half of the Spanish population live in bilingual or multilingual areas. The situation of the country’s multilingualism is reflected in relevant legal acts and in the Spanish Constitution itself. The reality of a multilingual society is included in the legal system and is reflected in all spheres of social life. The process of regional language recovery in the Iberian Peninsula is also often associated with the demands of regional independence (e.g. in Catalonia or the Basque Country). The concept of multilingualism thus becomes a hostage of itself and seems to undermine the principle of pluralism. Is the Spanish model effective and what are the principles it is based on?

Opis:
English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers are seemingly ideally placed to mediate the successful socialisation of multilingual learners into the new school environment for two major reasons. Firstly, as they have effective command of both L1 and L2 and often have experience of living abroad, they tend to exhibit higher levels of openness to new situations, empathy and understanding of the difficulties faced by multilingual learners. Secondly, the English class can itself be a platform for mutual understanding where learners are able to develop both English communication skills and intercultural competence (cf. Hopp, Jakisch, Sturm, Becker & Thoma 2020; Krulatz, Neokleous & Dahl 2022). As English is the language of instruction, it also has the potential to maintain levels of multilingual competence among those learners who already speak English as their heritage language (Banasiak & Olpińska-Szkiełko 2021), e.g. migrant children returning from the UK/Ireland. Drawing on data from a larger project (Rokita-Jaśkow, Wolanin, Król-Gierat & Nosidlak 2022), which consisted of interviewing 23 primary school EFL teachers in various contexts, this paper analyses the possible factors that impact teacher agency in the socialisation of multilinguals. It has been found that teacher agency in that respect appears to stem from teachers’ plurilingual competence and prior teaching experience. Surprisingly, personal experiences of intercultural encounters (e.g. time spent living abroad) or verbalised empathy, had little impact on teacher agency. This finding implies that even language teachers find it difficult to put themselves in the position of the multilingual learner and need specialist training in order to work with multilingual learners, which may convey an important message for educational decision-makers with reference to the formulation of future teacher education guidelines and curricula.

Review The monograph Różnojęzyczne słownictwo gwarowe Podlasia, Suwalszczyzny i północno-wschodniego Mazowsza is a result of an innovative, holistic approach in lexicography. The authors are not interested in separate languages, but in a specified linguistic area as a whole. The contact of Polish, Lithuanian and Eastern-Slavonic dialects in North East Poland lasts several centuries and it is impossible to set the borders between these codes. Thus, the holistic approach is the best theoretical solution in question.

The need for an electronic multilingual dictionaryThe paper analyses the issue of providing adequate equivalents in multilingual dictionaries. If equivalents are adequate, it means that: (1) the scope of meaning of one item is identical to its equivalent (cf. drive: drive a nail vs. drive a car); and (2) the collocations of the equivalents overlap. Two significant problems arise when searching for adequate equivalents: the lack of equivalents whose meanings are identical (narrower/wider meanings, partial overlap of meanings, more than equally good equivalent), and equivalents with homographs in a given language. Because such issues are difficult to resolve in a printed dictionary, we put forward some methods of addressing the problems in an electronic dictionary. The paper offers an example entry from such a dictionary, which presents a suggestion of a layout. We also took into consideration the potential problems which may appear if the entry is presented in this manner: first, one must set a limit for the description (a defined number of lexical units); second, one must avoid circularity, but at the same time also strive for an exhaustive description. Electronic dictionaries offer greater possibilities of presenting modern vocabulary and adding new classifiers (e.g. a classifier of politeness).

The present study investigates the comprehension and production of Spanish as a third or additional language (De Angelis’ (2007) term), paying special attention to the use of code-switching and translanguaging. Following Lewis, Jones and Baker (2012, p. 655), it is assumed that translanguaging involves the mobilisation of all of learners’ linguistic resources “to maximise understanding and achievement,” so the learners’ use of languages other than Spanish (especially English, but also e.g. French, Italian, etc.) in the tasks could be assumed to be an example of translanguaging too. Simultaneously, the use of words from languages other than Spanish for lack of a Spanish word could be argued to be more precisely classified as code-switching. Multilingual repertoires are highly complex and, according to Otheguy, García and Reid (2018), multilingual competence is unitary rather than divided into several distinct languages, so, in their view, words are selected from a single lexicon. However, as shown by Williams and Hammarberg (1998), the different languages in multilingual repertoires perform various functions, which gives rise to different types of switches. The study was carried out with English Philology and Romance Philology students studying Spanish as a third or additional language. As the results show, even though the Romance Philology students were generally better at translanguaging, viewed as the use of all their linguistic resources, they avoided switches into other Romance languages, probably to minimise interference. By contrast, the English Philology students, who had lower proficiency in Spanish, were less capable of using their multilingual resources, including English, to provide the missing words, possibly also due to problems with the comprehension of the Spanish sentences.

This article provides a comparative analysis of translation strategies for the English titles of Oscar-winning movies (Academy Award for Best Picture) into Polish, German and Russian. The titles analyzed show two strategies: adaptation and exotisation. However, they did not show a clear connection between the translation strategy and the degree of linguistic similarity since there was no clear dominance of exotisation in the German versions, considered to be the closest to the original. A significant use of explication of the meaning of the title in German versions was observed, which may indicate an attempt to more accurately convey basic information about a foreign movie to a German viewer.

According to the critical period hypothesis, the earlier the acquisition of a second language starts, the better. Owing to the plasticity of the brain, up until a certain age a second language can be acquired successfully according to this view. Early second language learners are commonly said to have an advantage over later ones especially in phonetic/phonological acquisition. Native-like pronunciation is said to be most likely to be achieved by young learners. However, there is evidence of accentfree speech in second languages learnt after puberty as well. Occasionally, on the other hand, a nonnative accent may appear even in early second (or third) language acquisition. Cross-linguistic influences are natural in multilingual development, and we would expect the dominant language to have an impact on the weaker one(s). The dominant language is usually the one that provides the largest amount of input for the child. But is it always the amount that counts? Perhaps sometimes other factors, such as emotions, ome into play? In this paper, data obtained from an EnglishPersian-Hungarian trilingual pair of siblings (under age 4 and 3 respectively) is analyzed, with a special focus on cross-linguistic influences at the phonetic/phonological levels. It will be shown that beyond the amount of input there are more important factors that trigger interference in multilingual development.
