Purpose: The aim of the study is to present opportunities for the development of innovative multifunctionality as a driving force of economic growth and improvement of living conditions in rural areas. Design/methodology/approach: The considerations were based on a critical analysis of the literature on the subject and materials obtained from online sources. Findings: The main factor of increasing the potential of rural areas are innovative activities enriching the rural economy, conducive to its compatibility with modern economic and social structures. They contribute significantly to the revitalization of the socio-economic fabric of the countryside, by creating new types of economic activity, developing multifunctionality conducive to creating real foundations for achieving sustainable economic growth. However, the future of the village cannot be built solely on its internal resources. Rural development is largely determined by external forces linked to markets and technology. The countryside requires significant innovative cooperation with external areas. Originality/value: In-depth analysis of the creation and adaptation of multifunctional innovations taking into account the appropriate combination of factors related to the local environment with factors related to general economic changes that brings global interdependence, as well as support for extensive business connections.

The mission that was assigned to the accounting for the initial spread of the technique in theworld, until the '30s was basically characterized by the prediction and control of the financial position. Thegreat specialist Italian Fabio Besta7, in the second half of the nineteenth century, had given rise to a greatwork which is titled precisely “The Accounting – La Ragioneria”. It must be taken into account that acompany like a human body has 4 circuits (venous, arterial, lymphatic nervous). So the company alsopossesses four: the heritage trail, economic, financial and cash. These, evolve, continuously but asynchronous,fact by fact, during the year, during the evolution of the various administrative events. Theinability to generate sufficient revenue has in many cases, led farmers to diversify from an agriculturalbase and undertake pluriactivity8. In this context, diversification from, and within, primary activities hasbecome a necessity and agricultural secondary activities and services, related to the rural environment,have been the major driver of growth within the EU during recent decades9. Following the crisis, whichstarted in 2007 and is still in progress, financial analysis and cash is now to be considered a real managementfunction. The aim of this paper is to analyze the creation of liquidity of agricultural enterprises,comparing and analyzing three types of firms with traditional culture and multifunctional business.

Inland ports in Europe, having undergone transformation for several decades, have become multifunctional economic spaces. Currently, these are not only transport nodes in land-water traditional transport chains but today also supply the locations of intermodal terminals, distribution centers, service and production companies, or technology parks. Multifunctional inland ports also form part of the economic systems of cities and regions, contributing to their development. The aim of this article is to present the best practices in managing inland ports in Europe. In the article, using the results of research on inland waterway transport, it is pointed out what practices in managing inland ports have led, in many cases, to their increased importance in both multi-branch transport systems and the economic development of cities and regions. The study used literature on the subject, specific information on selected European inland ports, and development strategies for selected regions in Europe, including inland waterway transport. On the basis of the above, best practices leading to the long-term development of inland ports and maximizing the added value arising in their areas were determined.

An assessment of perceptions of fishpond ecosystem services was conducted in Pasłek, a town located in northeastern Poland. Ninety-four expert interviews were conducted with non-fishermen. The survey included a list of 28 possible ecosystem services provided by fishponds. Environmental benefits were considered the most important, followed by social and productive services. Respondents rated the ponds' function as a place for fish spawning and reproduction highest, followed by their role as fire reservoirs and as a place for recreation and leisure. A comparison with other surveys showed that perceptions of ecosystem services in local surveys could be influenced by a number of conditions, including, among others, the nature and location of fish ponds. The survey showed that people not involved in fisheries and fish farming are aware of the wide range of ecosystem services fishponds provide. This is a positive social recommendation for European fisheries policy, which aims to develop aquaculture without deteriorating the environment, creating a balanced relationship between producers and consumers of production and non-production aquaculture products.
Ocenę postrzegania usług ekosystemowych stawów rybnych przeprowadzono w miejscowości Pasłęk, położonej w północno-wschodniej Polsce. Przeprowadzono 94 wywiady eksperckie z osobami niezwiązanymi zawodowo z rybactwem. Ankieta zawierała listę 28 potencjalnych usług ekosystemowych dostarczanych przez stawy rybne. Za najważniejsze uznano usługi środowiskowe, następnie usługi społeczne i usługi produkcyjne. Najwyżej respondenci ocenili funkcję stawów jako miejsca tarła i rozrodu ryb, następnie ich rolę jako zbiorników przeciwpożarowych oraz miejsca wypoczynku i rekreacji. Porównanie z innymi badaniami wykazało, że na postrzeganie usług ekosystemów w badaniach lokalnych może wywierać wpływ szereg uwarunkowań, w tym takich jak charakter i lokalizacja stawów rybnych. Badania wykazały, że osoby niezwiązane z rybactwem i hodowlą ryb są świadome szerokiego zakresu usług ekosystemowych świadczonych przez stawy rybne. Stanowi to pozytywną rekomendację społeczną dla europejskiej polityki rybackiej, której celem jest rozwój akwa-kultury bez pogarszania stanu środowiska, tworzenie zrównoważonych relacji między producentami, a konsumentami produkcyjnych i pozaprodukcyjnych produktów akwakultury.

The main function of railway stations is to serve travelers and enable them to travel by rail. However, even from the first years of the railway's existence, railway stations were accompanied by additional functions. Railway stations are functionally complex structures – transport nodes and multifunctional buildings. The possible solutions of the functional and spatial layouts of the railway stations were analyzed.
Główną funkcją dworców kolejowych jest obsługa podróżnych i umożliwienie im odbycia podróży koleją. Jednak już od pierwszych lat istnienia kolei dworcom towarzyszyły funkcje dodatkowe. Dworce kolejowe są złożonymi funkcjonalnie strukturami – węzłami komunikacyjnymi i obiektami wielofunkcyjnymi. Przeanalizowano rozwiązania układów funkcjonalno-przestrzennych dworców kolejowych.

W pracy przedstawiono rolę doradztwa rolniczego we wdrażaniu koncepcji trwałego i zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz w upowszechnianiu nowych funkcji współczesnego rolnictwa i obszarów wiejskich. W literaturze naukowej od kilkunastu lat dyskutuje się głównie o wielofunkcyjności obszarów wiejskich (multifunctionality of rural areas), rozumiejąc przez to dywersyfikację ekonomiczną wsi, a więc zwiększenie możliwości zatrudnienia w działalności pozarolniczej na obszarach wiejskich. Natomiast wielofunkcyjność rolnictwa (multifunctionality of agriculture) jako zagadnienie społeczno-ekonomiczne jest zagadnieniem mało rozpoznanym i niedostatecznie uwzględnianym w badaniach naukowych. O ile bowiem produkcyjne (rynkowe) funkcje rolnictwa są nam wszystkim dobrze znane, to funkcje pozarynkowe (non-commodity outputs of agriculture) stanowią trudność, jeśli chodzi o ich identyfikację i klasyfikację, biorąc pod uwagę nierynkowe efekty rolnictwa w sferze gospodarczej, społecznej, kulturowej i przyrodniczej. W kontekście tej problematyki pojawiają się nowe wyzwania dla doradztwa rolniczego, które powinno odegrać wiodąca rolę we wdrażaniu idei rozwoju zrównoważonego oraz upowszechnianiu pozakomercyjnych funkcji rolnictwa. Dostrzeżenie i docenienie wielofunkcyjności rolnictwa skłania więc do ochrony i wspierania rolnictwa w ramach Wspólnej Polityki Rolnej UE jako szczególnego działu gospodarki.
The paper presents the role of agricultural advisory services in implementing the concept of sustainable development and in promoting new functions of contemporary agriculture and rural development. For several years in the scientific literature one has been discussing mainly multifunctionality of rural areas, understanding it as economic diversfication of countryside, namely increase in employment opportunity in agricultural activity in rural areas. On the contrary, multifunctionality of agriculture as a socio-economic problem is an issue hardly recognized and insuciently considered in scientific studies. As far as production (market) functions of agriculture are well known to all of us, o-market functions (noncommodities outputs of agriculture) constitute a diculty, as far as their identification and classification is concerned, taking into account non-market e ects of agriculture in economic, social, cultural and natural sphere. In the context of these issues, there are new challneges for agricultural advisory services. It should play a leading role in implementing the idea of sustainable development and in promoting non-commercial functions of agriculture. Thus, perception and appreciation of multifunctionality of agriculture induces to protect and support agriculture under the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy, as a special sector of the economy.

One of the key and simultaneously the most difficult issues within the methodology of the environmental life cycle assessment (as well as related life cycle-based techniques) is solving the problem of the multifunctionality of product systems, which includes the questions crucial for the circular economy: reuse, recycling, transforming by-products into valuable (in the market aspect) co-products, prolonging durability. The present paper aims at familiarizing the questions of multifunctionality and presenting the Circular Footprint Formula (CFF), which has been developed within the pilot stage of the European Commission project related to the common methods of measurement and communication the life cycle environmental performance of products and organisations. An example of PET bottles has been presented and two scenarios have been analysed: (1) a scenario with no recycling (a recycling content = 0 and a recycling rate = 0) and (2) a scenario with recycling (recycling content = 0.24 and recycling rate = 0.24). Calculations of life cycle emissions of CO2 have been made by using the CFF formula. An idea of division environmental burdens and credits between supplier and user of the recycled material has been shown and explained as well.

One of the main goal of the rural development researches is to find such trajectories which have positive impact on human welfare without negative effects on natural resources. In this paper we investigate, if multifunctionality of farms can be a sustainable development trajectory, focusing on land use. The aim of the study is to show links between different development paths and their impact on land use intensity at the farm household level. The research bases on the 30 structured in depth interviews conducted in Bavarian Mittelgebirge – Germany, during which the farmers or former farmers reported the 60 years farm’s history. The results show the general trend to extensify land use and prove that the larger farms are more active in provision of new function that their peers with smaller farm size. The broadening strategy is the only multifunctional form which ensures the extensive land use approach. This retrospective study can be useful for regions with fragmented agriculture, big share of family farms and highland landscape like south Poland, Rumanian or Slovak highlands, where the natural constraints in agriculture encourage to search for such development paths, which do not exceed the environmental limits while ensuring the socio-economical welfare of inhabitants. Jednym z głównych celów badań nad rozwojem obszarów wiejskich jest znalezienie takich ścieżek rozwoju, które z jednej strony poprawiają jakość życia mieszkańców, z drugiej zaś – nie nadwyrężą zasobów naturalnych. W artykule sprawdzamy, na ile wielofunkcyjność gospodarstw rolnych jest zrównoważoną ścieżką rozwoju dla obszarów wiejskich głównie w kontekście użytkowania gruntów. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zależności między różnymi ścieżkami rozwoju obieranymi przez gospodarstwa a intensywnością prowadzonej przez nich gospodarki gruntami. Badanie przeprowadzono w oparciu o 30 ustrukturalizowanych wywiadów pogłębionych, w których właściciele lub byli właściciele gospodarstw relacjonowali 60-letnią historię swojego gospodarstwa. Wywiady przeprowadzono w Bawarii (Niemcy) na obszarze Mittelgebirge. Wyniki badania potwierdzają ogólny trend do ekstensyfikacji gospodarki gruntami w rejonie i pokazują, że większe gospodarstwa są bardziej aktywne w obszarze dostarczania nowych funkcji (także pozarolniczych) niż ma to miejsce w gospodarstwach mniejszych. Jednocześnie wyniki wskazują, że strategia „poszerzania” działalności jest jedyną formą wielofunkcyjnego rozwoju gospodarstw, która przekłada się na ekstensywną gospodarkę gruntami. Przedstawione retrospektywne badanie rozwoju gospodarstw może być użyteczne głównie dla regionów z rozdrobnioną strukturą agrarną, dużym udziałem gospodarstw rodzinnych i pagórkowatym ukształtowaniem terenu, jak ma to miejsce np. w południowej Polsce, i pagórkowatych obszarach Rumunii czy Słowacji, gdzie naturalne ograniczenia w rozwoju rolnictwa zachęcają do poszukiwania ścieżek rozwoju, które nie nadwyrężając zasobów środowiskowych, będą przyczyniały się do podniesienia dobrobytu społeczno-ekonomicznego mieszkańców. Celem niniejszej publikacji jest przedstawienie głównych i najważniejszych zagadnień dotyczących teorii zrównoważonego rozwoju wsi w wymiarze przestrzennym, z punktu widzenia wielofunkcyjności. Przedstawiono uwarunkowania teoretyczne i użytkowe, metody oraz wyniki implementacji tej teorii. Przeanalizowano również niektóre zależności między koncepcją rozwoju obszarów wiejskich w podejściu wielofunkcyjnym a teorią ekorozwoju obszarów wiejskich. Przedstawiono wyniki badań empirycznych dotyczących świadomości mieszkańców regionu konińskiego na temat zrównoważonego rozwoju obszarów wiejskich. Problem badawczy analizowano na podstawie oryginalnych źródeł informacji. Zostały one uzyskane w wyniku badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych w czerwcu 2018r., za pomocą kwestionariusza, metoda bezpośredniego wywiadu. W ankiecie uwzględniono mieszkańców regionu konińskiego, 110 respondentów zostało wybranych na podstawie wyboru nielosowego kwotowego (płeć, wiek) i celowej selekcji (studenci, pracownicy). Interpretując wyniki badań wykorzystano metodę indukcyjno-dedukcyjną. Skalę zjawiska i znaczenie czynnika sprawczego, podane przez respondentów, określono jako procent. Biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że niektórzy respondenci nie znali znaczenia celów zrównoważonego rozwoju, hierarchia wyznaczonych przez nich celów opierała się raczej na przypuszczeniach, a nie na konkretnych przekonaniach i wiedzy. W związku z tym uzyskane wyniki należy zaakceptować z tą rezerwą. Jednak znaczna część respondentów była w pełni świadoma kompleksowego rozumienia idei zrównoważonego rozwoju i łączyła je z celami społeczno-ekonomiczno-przyrodniczymi zrównoważonego rozwoju.
The aim of this publication is to present the most important problems and the main issues in the theory of sustainable development of rural areas in the spatial dimension, from the standpoint of multifunctionality. Theoretical and applied determinants and methods are presented, as well as the results of application of this theory. Some relationships between the concept of rural development under a multifunctional approach and the theory of eco-development of rural areas also analyzed. The results of an empirical study concerning the awareness of people living in the Konin region on the sustainable development of rural areas are presented. The research problem was analyzed on the basis of original sources of information, obtained through empirical research carried out in June 2018 using a questionnaire-based personal interview method. The questionnaire was completed by residents of the Konin region. 110 respondents were selected based on the principles of selection of non-random quantities (gender, age) and purposeful selection (students, workers). The results were interpreted using an inductive-deductive method. The scale of the phenomenon and the importance of the causative factors, as given by the respondents, were determined as percentages. Because some of those commenting on the importance of sustainable goals in development were not aware of this concept, let alone its specific ideas, the hierarchy of goals determined by them was based rather on conjecture than on specific beliefs and knowledge. Therefore, the results obtained should be viewed with this reservation. A significant proportion of respondents had a comprehensive understanding of the idea of sustainable development, and combined with socio-economic and environmental objectives, this means that the replies given by respondents provide definitions and opinions on the hierarchy of goals for sustainable development.

Współcześnie obszary wiejskie wypełniają zróżnicowane funkcje w rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczym. Funkcje terenów wiejskich ewoluują, tworząc przestrzeń wielofunkcyjną. Celem opracowania jest zobrazowanie zmian zachodzących w poszczególnych funkcjach obszarów wiejskich i ich rozwój. Na podstawie studiów literatury z zakresu podejmowanej problematyki, przedstawiono różnice w podejściu badaczy do kwestii rozwoju wielofunkcyjnego w Polsce. Uwypuklono elementy wpływające na wielofunkcyjny rozwój wsi i rolnictwa, wskazując na przyczyny, skutki i bariery tej koncepcji. W oparciu o różnorodne kryteria zobrazowano klasyfikacje funkcji wsi i rolnictwa. Rozwijanie w przestrzeni wiejskiej funkcji innych niż rolnicza pozwolą na utrzymanie żywotności wsi, zapewnienie odpowiedniego standardu życia jej mieszkańcom i dalszego spełniania przez nie szeregu funkcji, często innowacyjnych i perspektywicznych.
Nowadays, rural areas fulfill various functions in the socio-economic development. The functions of rural areas evolve to create a multifunctional space. The aim of this study is to illustrate the changes taking place in the various functions of rural areas and their development. On the basis of literature studies in the field of the undertaken issues, differences in the researchers’ approach to multifunctional development in Poland are presented. The elements influencing the multifunctional development of rural areas and agriculture were highlighted, indicating the causes, effects and barriers of this concept. Based on various criteria, the classification of rural and agricultural functions has been presented. The development of non-agricultural functions in rural space will help maintain the vitality of the countryside, ensure an adequate standard of living for its inhabitants and continue to fulfill a number of functions, often innovative and perspective ones. The issues discussed in the article may constitute a starting point for further in-depth research.

Opis:
One of the new forms of rural development is the creation of economic activity zones in their area. They are one of the significant factors shaping the multifunctionality of rural communes. The purpose of this paper is the analysis of the functioning of such a zone in the Wilkowice commune (Poland) in the period 2006–2018. The development factors from the past of the Wilkowice were also presented in the article. The commune located picturesquely in the area of the Wilkowice Gate, on the slopes of the Silesian Beskids and the Little Beskids, developed due to its tourist attractiveness and spa traditions. In the conditions of market economy, the development of the tourist function was hindered. When looking for new drivers of the economy, the commune authorities begun work on establishing an economic zone located far from residential and tourist areas. A zone of approximately 15 hectares was designed, a 1,528-metre long road was constructed and equipped with necessary utilities, with an easy access to the S-1 motorway. Within the zone, 15 new industrial plants started to operate in the years 2011–2018, and more are under construction. Economic effects resulting from the operations of the plants in the zone, which employs approximately 2,000 people, constitute the basis for further constant and sustainable development of the commune, indirectly influencing the intensification of tourism through the modernisation of infrastructure, the creation of new places to stay and the organisation of tourist events. The commune is a good example of multifunctional development based on the coexistence of tourism and industry.
Jedną z nowych form zagospodarowania obszarów wiejskich jest tworzenie na ich terenie stref aktywności gospodarczej. Są one jednym z istotnych czynników kształtujących wielofunkcyjność gmin wiejskich. Analiza funkcjonowania takiej strefy w gminie Wilkowice w latach 2006–2018 jest celem niniejszej publikacji. Przedstawiono także czynniki rozwoju gminy Wilkowice w przeszłości. Gmina położona malowniczo na obszarze Bramy Wilkowickiej, na zboczach Beskidu Śląskiego i Małego, rozwijała się dzięki swoim walorom turystycznym i tradycjom uzdrowiskowym. W warunkach gospodarki rynkowej rozwój funkcji turystycznej został zahamowany. Poszukując nowych czynników ożywienia gospodarki, władze gminy rozpoczęły prace nad uruchomieniem strefy gospodarczej położonej z dala od terenów mieszkaniowych i turystycznych. Zaprojektowano strefę o powierzchni około 15 hektarów, wybudowano drogę o długości 1528 m wyposażoną w niezbędne media oraz z dogodnym dojazdem do trasy szybkiego ruchu S-1. W strefie w latach 2011–2018 funkcjonowało 15 nowych zakładów przemysłowych, a kolejne są w budowie. Efekty gospodarcze wynikające z działalności zakładów w strefie, w której jest zatrudnionych około 2 tys. osób, stanowią podstawę do dalszego stałego i zrównoważonego rozwoju gminy, wpływając pośrednio na zintensyfikowanie turystyki poprzez modernizację infrastruktury, powstanie nowych obiektów noclegowych oraz organizację imprez turystycznych. Gmina może być dobrym przykładem wielofunkcyjnego rozwoju, opartego na współistnieniu turystyki i przemysłu.

Opis:
The multifunctionality is one of the most important aspects of the sustainable development in the regional economy management. There are essentially two approaches to the analysis of multifunctionality. One is to interpret multifunctionality as a characteristic of an economic activity. The second way of interpreting multifunctionality is in terms of multiple roles assigned to agriculture. In this view, agriculture as an activity is entrusted with fulfilling certain functions in society. Social functions are linked to employment and income generation in rural areas and hence sustaining the viability of rural communities and maintaining rural society. The study evaluates the influence of external and internal factors on development of social capital in the selected region and authors will focus mainly on the impact of local stakeholders and policy measures. The interaction between relevant stakeholders as public sector, civil society, local business sector and primary sector is expected to be beneficial for development of social capital.
Multifunkcjonalność jest jednym z najważniejszych aspektów zrównoważonego rozwoju regionalnego zarządzania gospodarką. Zasadniczo istnieją dwa podejścia do analizy multifunkcjonalności. Jednym z nich jest interpretowanie multifunkcjonalności jako cechy działalności gospodarczej. Drugi sposób interpretacji multifunkcjonalności tyczy się wielu ról przypisanych do rolnictwa. Z tego punktu widzenia, rolnictwu jako działalności powierzone jest pełnienie określonych funkcji w społeczeństwie. Funkcje społeczne powiązane są z zatrudnieniem i generowaniem dochodów na obszarach wiejskich, a tym samym z utrzymaniem rentowności społeczności wiejskich i utrzymywaniem społeczeństwa wiejskiego. Badanie ocenia wpływ czynników wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych na rozwój kapitału społecznego w wybranym regionie i autorzy skupią się przede wszystkim na wpływie lokalnych interesariuszy i środków politycznych. Oczekuje się, że interakcja pomiędzy zainteresowanymi podmiotami, jak sektor publiczny, społeczeństwo obywatelskie, lokalny sektor biznesu i sektor surowcowy będzie korzystna dla rozwoju kapitału społecznego.
