Opis:
We calculate the dynamics of tax evasion within a multi-agent econophysics model which is adopted from the theory of magnetism and previously has been shown to capture the main characteristics from agent-based based models which build on the standard Allingham and Sandmo approach. In particular, we implement a feedback of public goods provision on the decision-making of selfish agents which aim to pursue their self interest. Our results imply that such a feedback enhances the moral attitude of selfish agents thus reducing the percentage of tax evasion. Two parameters govern the behavior of selfish agents, (i) the rate of adaption to changes in public goods provision and (ii) the threshold of perception of public goods provision. Furtheron we analyze the tax evasion dynamics for different agent compositions and under the feedback of public goods provision. We conclude that policymakers may enhance tax compliance behavior via the threshold of perception by means of targeted public relations.

Opis:
In this paper, a multi-spring model is used for modelling of the crack in a micro/nanobeam under axial compressive load based on a modified couple stress theory. This model includes an equivalent rotational spring to transmit the bending moment and an equivalent longitudinal spring to transmit the axial force through the cracked section, which leads to promotion of the modelling of discontinuities due to the presence of the crack. Moreover, this study considers coupled effects between the bending moment and axial force on the discontinuities at the cracked section. Therefore, four flexibility constants appear in the continuity conditions. In this paper, these four constants are obtained as a function of crack depth, separately. This modelling is employed to solve the buckling problem of cracked micro/nanobeams using a close-form method, Euler-Bernoulli theory and simply supported boundary conditions. Finally, the effects of flexibility constants, crack depth and crack location on the critical buckling load are studied.

This paper presents a new multi-modal approach to the description of the surface texture. An analysis of the existing in these scope solutions was done, paying special attention to the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. The examples of the use of a new model for the analysis of computer-modelled surface texture were presented. These examples prove that the model works well for surfaces containing textures with periodic and random nature of the distribution of ordinates. The directions of further research and the possibilities of using the introduced model were specified.

Opis:
In the present article, an attempt is made to derive optimal data-driven machine learning methods for forecasting an average daily and monthly rainfall of the Fukuoka city in Japan. This comparative study is conducted concentrating on three aspects: modelling inputs, modelling methods and pre-processing techniques. A comparison between linear correlation analysis and average mutual information is made to find an optimal input technique. For the modelling of the rainfall, a novel hybrid multi-model method is proposed and compared with its constituent models. The models include the artificial neural network, multivariate adaptive regression splines, the k-nearest neighbour, and radial basis support vector regression. Each of these methods is applied to model the daily and monthly rainfall, coupled with a pre-processing technique including moving average and principal component analysis. In the first stage of the hybrid method, sub-models from each of the above methods are constructed with different parameter settings. In the second stage, the sub-models are ranked with a variable selection technique and the higher ranked models are selected based on the leave-one-out cross-validation error. The forecasting of the hybrid model is performed by the weighted combination of the finally selected models.

the elderly in Poland
Opis:
Poland will experience advanced population ageing driven by improvements in longevity, low fertility and retirement of baby boom cohorts. Given the higher morbidity prevalence observed at older ages, the demand for the elderly care is expected to increase. The study focuses on the dynamics of health of people aged 50 and over in Poland. We want to verify how the risks of the health status change are shaped over age and what the impact of sex is. The empirical analysis provides a description of a non-parametric multi-state model for transitions in health. The age- and sex-specific health transition rates and probabilities are estimated based on the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) panel data for the years 2008–2011. The results confirm the well-known regularities in research on health: the risk of being unhealthy is increasing with age, while the probability of recovery is decreasing. Women have a higher risk of the onset of disability than men, whereas recovery to health is similar for men and women.

Opis:
Studying the dynamic behavior of magnetic particle suspensions in the low intensity magnetic separator has important implications for various mineral beneficiation processes. A new approach for fully coupled multi-physics modeling of the dynamic behavior of multi-type magnetic particles (MTMPs) is developed in the study. In this model, the particle tracing module is employed to identify and determine individual particle trajectories in the fluid and magnetic field, which are modelled through the COMSOL Multiphysics. The results show that the different arrangements of the permanent magnet assembly and the volume percentage of interlocked particles affect the dynamic behavior of MTMPs and the efficiency of the separation. The model is compared with experiments and the particle capture theory and the correctness of the solution obtained from COMSOL is demonstrated. The model gives new possibilities to control, optimise, and develop the process of LIMS.

Współczesna diagnostyka techniczna stosująca model boryka się często ze zbyt dużym stopniem złożoności stosowanych modeli. Rozwiązania tego problemu, najczęściej stosowane dotychczas, polegały na upraszczaniu niektórych zależności modelu bądź świadomym pomijaniu niektórych wejść obiektu celem uproszczenia struktury modelu. W referacie przedstawiono odmienne podejście polegające na stosowaniu zbioru stosunkowo prostych modeli lokalnych w miejsce jednego złożonego modelu globalnego. Taki zbiór modeli lokalnych nazywany jest wielomodelem.
Nowadays technical diagnostics that applies a model struggles very often with a high-complexity degree of applying model. Solutions of that problem, applied most frequent so far, consisted in simplifying of some model relations or conscious omitting of some object inputs with the purpose of making a model structure simpler. In the paper, it is presented inflected approach that consists in application of a set of simply local models instead one complex global model. Such a set of local models is called multi-model.

In order to enhance the authenticity and accuracy simulation of passengers’ evacuation in ships, a new multi-grid model is proposed on the basis of cellular automata theory. By finer lattice the multi-grid model could enhance the continuity of passengers’ track and the precision of boundary’s qualification compared with traditional cellular automata model. Attraction, repulsion and friction are also quantized in the multi-grid model to present the impact of interaction force among pedestrians. Furthermore, crowd’s evacuation simulated by traditional cellular automata and multi-grid model in single exit room and typical cabin environment have been taken as examples to analyze crowd’s motion laws. It is found that the laws of passengers’ evacuation simulated by the two models are similar, and the simulation authenticity and accuracy is enhanced by the multi-grid model.

Opis:
The liberalization and deregulation of the energy industry in the past decades have been significantly affected by changes in the strategies of energy firms. The traditionally used approach of cost minimization was no longer sufficient, risk and market behavior could no longer be ignored and the need for more appropriate optimization methods for uncertain environments was increased. Meanvariance portfolio (MVP) theory is one of the more advanced financial methods that has been successfully applied to the energy sector. Unfortunately, this static approach is inadequate for studying multi-stage investment decision problems. The methodology proposed in this paper considering power generation assets is based on the model introduced by Mulvey, who suggests a reallocation approach using the analysis of various scenarios. The adoption of this methodology to power generation assets allows us to capture the impact of variations in the economic and technical parameters considered. The results of our study show that the application of a model for selection of multi-period portfolio can indeed improve the decision making process. Especially for the case of adding new investments to the portfolio mix, this rebalancing model captures new entries very well.

Opis:
The purpose of the work was to develop two-phase non-Newtonian blood models for medium-sized vessels with stenosis using power law and Herschel–Bulkley models. Methods: The blood flow was simulated in 3D models of blood vessels with 60% stenosis. The Ansys Fluent software was applied to implement the two-phase non-Newtonian blood models. In the present paper, the mixture model was selected to model the two phases of blood: plasma and red blood cells. Results: Simulations were carried out for four blood models: a) single-phase non-Newtonian, b) two-phase non-Newtonian, c) two-phase Herschel–Bulkley with yield stress 0 mPa, and d) two-phase Herschel–Bulkley with yield stress 10 mPa for blood plasma, while flow took place in vessel with stenosis 60%. Presentation of results in this paper shows that stenosis can substantially affect blood flow in the artery, causing variations of velocity and wall shear stress. Thus, the results in the present paper are maximum values of blood velocity and wall shear stress, profiles and distributions of blood velocity and wall shear stress computed for single- and two-phase blood models for medium-sized vessels with stenosis. Conclusions: For the two-phase blood models the influence of initial velocity on blood flow in the stenosis zone is not observed, the velocity profiles are symmetric and parabolic. Contrary, for the single phase non-Newtonian blood model, the velocity profile is flat in the stenosis zone and distribution of velocity is disturbed just behind the stenosis zone. The shapes of wall shear stress profiles for twophase blood models are similar and symmetric in the center of stenosis. The biggest differences in maximum values of velocities and wall shear stress are observed between single phase non-Newtonian power law and Herschel–Bulkley blood models. The comparison of the obtained results with the literature indicates that the two-phase Herschel–Bulkley model is the most suitable for describing flow in medium-sized vessels with stenosis.

Opis:
In Europe, at the end of the 20th century, the growth of marinas followed the rapid development of recreational marine activities. This trend has now slowed and today the creation of new marinas or the extension of existing marinas is less common, mainly due to the enforcement of protective environmental regulations. As the port sector is facing some major sustainability challenges, like tackling the pollution generated from port activities, the “green port”, or “green marina”, concept has now become a requirement. Both types of nautical ports, public ports and private marinas, share the same responsibility to achieve management standards. The term “green port” in practice describes the responsible behavior of all stakeholders in the port’s business, with a focus on the long-term vision towards the sustainable and climate-friendly development of the port’s infrastructure. This paper aims to confirm the adequacy of multi-criteria analysis (MCA) for the evaluation and introduction of energy efficient mobility options in nautical ports. Within the paper, a multi-criteria based model for energy-efficient mobility selection is presented. This model is tested on two Croatian private marinas and obtained results indicating the most suitable action for both. The output of the model showed that by far the best energy-efficient solution was the installation of electric charging stations (ECS) for cars. The presented model can assist decision-makers in port authorities and marina administrations in planning and finding the best scenario for the development of energy efficient systems and services.

Traditional market selection analysis relies purely on macroeconomic and political factors and fails to account for cultural aspects. Also, international market selection systematic models lack to incorporate hybrid techniques to systematically reduce the uncertainty by comparing results and examining the similarities and differences of the various approaches. The paper aims to present a multi-criteria decision-making model combined with a qualitative technique to make strategic decisions while selecting an international market. Using a hybrid approach, it was examined 18 coffee-producing SMEs to contrast the current multi-criteria model with the firms’ qualitative approach. Thus, the study offers novelty by incorporating a cultural dimension in a multi-criteria model and combining this quantitative approach with a qualitative approach to validate a hybrid approach and thus gain more reliable decision-making while selecting markets abroad. The contribution of the study is twofold. First, the study offers insights into international business by analyzing the relationship between international market selection and small and medium-sized enterprises from novel contexts. Second, the study proposes a multi-criteria decision-making model combined with a qualitative technique to make accurate and strategic decisions while selecting foreign markets.

Analytical formulas of the angular width and propagation factor of a multi-Gaussian Schell-model vortex (MGSMV) beam through atmospheric turbulence are derived on the basis of the extended Huygens–Fresnel integral and second-order moments of Wigner distribution function. Evolution properties of the angular width and propagation factor of MGSMV beams propagating in atmospheric turbulence are investigated numerically. The results show that a multi-Gaussian Schell-model beam is more affected by atmospheric turbulence than a MGSMV beam, which will be useful for the practical application of the MGSMV beam.
