Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare colonization of pine chips without supplements and pine chips supplemented with forest litter, peat and lignite by mites (Acari), and particularly oribatid mites (Oribatida) in a two-year cycle. The study was conducted in the years 2013-2014, on microplots established in a belt of trees in a nursery in Białe Błota within Bydgoszcz Forest District. The experiment was established on four microplots (1 x 1 m). It included the following variants: C - pine chips alone, Lf – pine chips inoculated with fresh forest litter, Lf+Pe – pine chips enriched with deacidified high peat (20%) (pH 5.5-6.5) and inoculated with the litter, Lf+Li - pine chips enriched with granulated lignite (20%) inoculated with the litter. In the first year of the study, mite abundance in the chips inoculated with forest litter was significantly higher than that on microplot C. In the second year of the experiment, the abundance of these microarthropods decreased probably due to unfavorable weather conditions. The most common group of mites were usually oribatid mites that accounted for 19.7 to 80.4% of all mites. An analysis of seasonal dynamics of Oribatida abundance over the entire study cycle revealed a clear increase in their numbers in non-supplemented pine chips only on the last sampling date. Oribatida abundance in Lf variant was similar at the beginning and end of the study. Contrary to that, their number decreased in the chips supplemented with peat, and particularly those enriched with lignite. In total, 36 species of oribatid mites were identified on all microplots. The greatest boost in species diversity after the introduction of forest litter was observed in Lf chips and the smallest in Lf + Li variant. Oribatula tibialis was the most common oribatid mite in the investigated substrates. Low numbers of Oppiella nova and Tectocepheus velatus, the species having trophic associations with fungi, may indicate poor colonization of the chips, particularly those enriched with lignite, by saprotrophic organisms.

Opis:
This study examined the effect of fertilisation with compost prepared from hygienised sludge with an addition of pine-tree bark and mulching with fresh forest ectohumus on selected growth parameters in two – and three-year seedlings of common beech and the occurrence of mites (Acari) in soil. The experiment was carried out in 2009-2010 in the Białe Błota forest nursery (Bydgoszcz Forest District) on proper rusty soil. The entire area of the experiment was irrigated with a stationary sprinkler. The beech seedlings on the plots where compost had been used as fertiliser were significantly taller than those growing on the plots where mineral fertilisers had been applied. Mulching increased the height of the seedlings significantly only in the last, third year of the study. The tallest three-year-old seedlings were found on the plots in which both of the tested procedures had been carried out. Neither of the factors under study had a significant effect on the diameter of the root neck in the second year of the nursery cultivation, but they increased it significantly in the third year. Fertilisation with compost with an addition of pine-tree bark increased the number of leaves per plant and the leaf area in two – and three-year-old seedlings. A beneficial and significant effect of mulching on these parameters was found in the third year of cultivation. A significantly positive effect of mulching on the mite gathering density was recorded in the second year of the nursery cultivation. However, both of the experimental factors had a positive effect on the occurrence of those arthropods in the third year of the study. Oribatid mites were the most numerous mite order and they were found in the greatest density on plots where mulching had been applied. Fertilisation and mulching increased the Oribatida/Actinedida ratio, which may indicate an improvement of the biological balance in the soil environment.

Opis:
An investigation was done on the effect of different types of organic mulches that were applied in form of straw to the soil mulching process, on the weed infestation, number, and fresh mass of weeds in broccoli cv. Milady F1 (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck) and tomato cv. Polfast F1 (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) grown under polypropylene fibre as a covering, or grown without a covering. The different types of organic straw mulches were: rye (Secale cereale L.), corn (Zea mays L.), rape (Brassica napus L. subsp. napus), and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.). All the organic mulches were applied at a dose of 10 t/ha. The effect of the mulches was compared to a control plot which had no mulch. The type of organic mulch applied to the soil mulching process influenced species composition, number, and fresh mass of weeds. This effect could be the result of the properties of the mulch (colour, structure, etc.) or the allelopathic effect on the germination and growth of individual weeds species. Irrespective of the investigated factors, 24 and 25 weeds species, respectively, were observed immediately after cover removal and before broccoli and tomato harvest. In the first date of estimation Chenopodium album L., Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., Fallopia convolvulus (L.) Á. Löve, Stellaria media (L.) Vill., and Viola tricolor L. dominated, however, before the vegetables were harvested Ch. album, V. tricolor, Veronica arvensis L., and E. crus-galli dominated. An application of polypropylene fibre contributed to an increase in the number and fresh mass of weeds in both vegetables in the first date of estimation (after cover removal). During this period, vegetables cannot compete with weeds. It is important to note, though, that before the vegetables were harvested, a decrease was found in the number and fresh mass of weeds in the covered plots. The most efficient weed limiter, both after cover removal and also before the broccoli and tomatoes were harvested, was buckwheat and rye straw, respectively.

Opis:
Soils in Poland are characterised by relatively low available water reserves. Soil mulching is one of the methods which positively influence soil moisture and structure, reduce negative effects of erosion, and help to decrease fluctuations of soil temperature. The experiment was carried out in the years 2010-2012 at the Experimental Station of the Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities as a split-block design with three replicates. The study aimed to determine the effect of plant covering (with-out cover, under polypropylene fibre) and soil mulching with different kinds of straw (rye, corn, rape, buckwheat) on changes in soil temperature and moisture as well as on the yield of broccoli. Soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm in covered plots was higher than in plot without cover. Soil temperature in the plots without straw, irrespective of whether a covering was used, was higher than in plots with straw. The lowest fall in temperature compared to the control plot was observed in plots mulched with buckwheat straw. This phenomenon was a result of lower intensity of light reflection of this straw which absorbed more sunlight than straw of other species. All investigated kinds of straw caused an increase of moisture in the upper (0-20 cm) and lower (20-40 cm) soil layers after cover removal and before broccoli harvest, in the cultivation without cover and under polypropylene fibre. Application of covers and simultaneous soil mulching had more favourable influence on water content in the soil than only mulching. Significantly the highest total yield of broccoli in the cultivation under cover was achieved from plots mulched with buckwheat straw. In noncovered objects slightly higher yields compared to remaining kinds of straw, but significantly higher than in control plot, were noted for soil mulching with corn straw.
Najmniejszy spadek temperatury w porównaniu do stwierdzonej w obiekcie kontrolnym zaobserwowano w obiektach mulczowanych słomą gryczaną. Zjawisko to było wynikiem niższej intensywności odbicia światła przez tę słomę, która absorbowała więcej promieni słonecznych niż słoma innych gatunków roślin. Wszystkie badane rodzaje słomy powodowały wzrost wilgotności wierzchniej (0-20 cm) i głębszej (20-40 cm) warstwy gleby po zdjęciu osłon i przed zbiorem róż, zarówno w uprawie bez osłony, jak i z włókniną polipropylenową. Zastosowanie osłon i jednoczesne mulczowanie gleby wpłynęło korzystniej na zawartość wody w glebie w porównaniu do mulczowania. Istotnie największy plon ogółem brokułu w uprawie pod włókniną zebrano z obiektów mulczowanych słomą gryczaną. W uprawie bez osłony nieznacznie większy w porównaniu z pozostałymi słomami, ale istotnie większy w porównaniu z obiektem kontrolnym plon dało mulczowanie gleby słomą kukurydzianą.

The purpose of this investigation was to indicate the most effective method of revitalizing degraded forest area. The different modifications of wood chips were used as a substitute for humus layer. The mites (Acari), and moss mites (Oribatida) as the bio-indicators of soil succession changes were used. The study began 2 years after planting of Scots pine seedlings on the land devastated by military activity, at the former military training ground (GPS: 53.156943N, 17.986440E). The soil on this area was in the type of rusty soils and subtype of the rusty algae soils. Scots pine seedlings were planted in spring 2011, in a distance 1.5×0.8 m. In one-factor experiment four soil mulching treatments were tested: 1. uncovered soil – control (C), 2. soil mulched with wood chips (W), 3. W + mycorrhizal preparation (WM), 4. W + forest litter (WL). Three replicates of microplots arrangement was applied. Each microplot was 5 m long with 3 rows of Scots pine. Each replication covers 10 rows. Mulching with wood chips was carried out on April 12, 2012. On October 25, 2012, the wood chips on the WM microplots were inoculated with the mycorrhizal biopreparation, and on the WL microplots, a 10% addition of fresh forest litter from the ripe fresh coniferous forest was applied. After the end of the growing season of 2012, 2013 and 2014, the measurement of the plants was carried out (the height, the root neck diameter, the length of one-year increments in the last whorl, the number of one-year increments of the last whorl and the lengths of one-year increments of the last whorl). The samples for acarological tests were collected four times. In total, 40 substrate samples with a volume of 50 cm3 each were collected from each treatment. Mites extraction was carried out for 7 days in Tullgren apparatus. Mites were identified to the order, and moss mites to the species or genus, including juvenile stages. Calculated: the average density of mites, the dominance index, the species richness, the diversity of moss mites, the average number of species, and the Shannon general species diversity index. The use of soil mulching with the Scots pine wood chips did not significantly affect the growth and developmental characteristics of the Scots pine plants. After mulching with wood chips, the total number of mites increased many times, and moss mites began to dominate among micro-arthropods. Mulching treatments increased the number and the species diversity of moss mites in the substrate. The number of moss mites increased the most in wood chips without additives. The highest species diversity was observed in the wood chips with the addition of forest litter. Among moss mites Tectocepheus velatus visibly dominated in all study treatments. Oppiella nova and Scutovertex sculptus also constituted numerous mites populations. The study shows that the wood chips are very useful for use in the regeneration of the devastated and degraded forest soils.

Opis:
In this paper we discuss the possibility of increasing service life of tools used in forestry for mulching of undesirable forest growths. In a heterogeneous working environment in which they are operated, such tools are subjected to constant abrasion and impact loading. There are several ways how to extend their service life and operational fitness. One of these is hard surface treatment, or hard surfacing of their functional surfaces. In our experiment, we chose suitable hard surfacing materials and applied these on the sample materials using the MMA and MAG welding. The hard surface was applied in an one layer. Subsequently, we performed hardness tests, microscopic analysis of the structure of the basic material and the hard surface and evaluation of the fusion penetration of the base material with the hard surfacing weld. Fusion is crucial as it determines the cohesiveness of the weld and base materials and thus also the actual extension of the service life of the tools.

Opis:
In this study, field experiment has been carried out on the grape yard during the summer, Rainy, and winter seasons using different irrigation methods and measuring its impact on moisture retention. Six different irrigation methods such as drip irrigation (DI), drip irrigation with plastic mulching (DIPM), drip irrigation with organic mulching (DIOM), subsurface irrigation with stone column (SISC), subsurface irrigation with mud pot (SIMP), and subsurface irrigation with plastic bottles (SIPB) are used during experimental work. CROPWAT-8.0 model (FAO) is used to find out crop water requirements. Soil moisture is measured using soil moisture sensors fixed in the depth of 30 and 60 cm at the same location. Climatic parameters are obtained from the automatic weather station which is located near the experimental field. Multifactorial statistical analysis has been carried out using recorded soil moisture and climatic data. As per experimental results and analysis, it is observed that drip irrigation with the plastic mulching method is found to be the best method of irrigation for soil moisture retention among all other methods due to its highest soil moisture retention value as 25–30%. Whereas subsurface irrigation with the plastic bottle method is found to be suitable as it retained 15–20% soil moisture and material used in this irrigation method is waste material and the cheapest one.
Przeprowadzono eksperyment polowy w winnicy w czasie lata, pory mokrej i zimowej, stosując różne metody nawadniania i mierząc jego wpływ na zachowanie wilgotności w glebie. Zastosowano sześć metod nawadniania: nawadnianie kroplowe, nawadnianie kroplowe z przykrywaniem syntetyczną włókniną, nawadnianie kroplowe z mulczowaniem organicznym, podpowierzchniowe nawadnianie z kolumnami z kamieni, podpowierzchniowe nawadnianie z glinianymi naczyniami i nawadnianie za pomocą butelek plastikowych. Do oceny zapotrzebowania uprawy na wodę zastosowano model CROPWAT 8.0. Wilgotność gleby mierzono czujnikami wprowadzonymi do gleby na głębokość 30 i 60 cm. Parametry klimatyczne uzyskano z automatycznej stacji pogodowej usytuowanej w pobliżu pola doświadczalnego. Wieloczynnikową analizę statystyczną przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem pomierzonej wilgotności gleby i danych klimatycznych.
