Opis:
This paper is about four Japanese university students majoring in international studies, who participated in a two-year study examining changes in their motivation. Using monthly interviews and a 29-item questionnaire on Dörnyei’s (2005) L2 motivational self system that was administered alongside each interview, the trajectories of learner motivation were investigated, based on both quantitative and qualitative data. First, changes in the participants’ motivation were identified using quantitative data. Next, a variety of motivators and demotivators that learners experienced both inside and outside of their classrooms were analyzed using the qualitative data. With the data obtained, this study focuses on how four learners’ language learning motivation and contexts adapt to each other, and how the dynamics of the four learners’ motivation changes due to their learning experiences. Each learner was different in their trajectory of motivation and the kinds of motivators and demotivators that they experienced in their particular contexts. The four learners underwent unique motivators and demotivators, and reacted differently. While participants identified their ideal L2 selves, or ought-to L2 selves, these self-guides were not strengthened by their L2 experiences over time. Based on these findings, the importance of studying the rich experiences of language learners in motivation research is discussed.

Opis:
When we examine the empirical investigations of motivation in second and foreign language learning, even those drawing upon the latest theoretical paradigms, such as the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2009), it becomes clear that many of them still fail to take account of its dynamic character and temporal variation. This may be surprising in view of the fact that the need to adopt such a process-oriented approach has been emphasized by a number of theorists and researchers (e.g., Dörnyei, 2000, 2001, 2009; Ushioda, 1996; Williams & Burden, 1997), and it lies at the heart of the model of second language motivation proposed by Dörnyei and Ottó (1998). It is also unfortunate that few research projects have addressed the question of how motivation changes during a language lesson as well as a series of lessons, and what factors might be responsible for fluctuations of this kind. The present paper is aimed to rectify this problem by reporting the findings of a classroom-based study which investigated the changes in the motivation of 28 senior high school students, both in terms of their goals and intentions, and their interest and engagement in classroom activities and tasks over the period of four weeks. The analysis of the data collected by means of questionnaires, observations and interviews showed that although the reasons for learning remain relatively stable, the intensity of motivation is indeed subject to variation on a minute-to-minute basis and this fact has to be recognized even in large-scale, cross-sectional research in this area.

Vision, that is, the mental representation of the sensory experience of a future goal state (involving imagination and imagery), is currently at the forefront of motivational innovation, and in recent years it has been seen increasingly more often in the motivational tool kit of practicing language teachers. Theories such as Dörnyei’s L2 motivational self system have explored the power that creating effective visions can harness (see, e.g., Dörnyei & Kubanyiova, 2014) and when viewed in conjunction with other current research avenues, such as future time perspective and dynamic systems theory, vision offers exciting potential. A Directed Motivational Current is a new motivational construct that we suggest is capable of integrating many current theoretical strands with vision: It can be described as a motivational drive which energises long-term, sustained behaviour (such as language learning), and through placing vision and goals as critical central components within this construct, it offers real and practical motivational potential. In this conceptual paper, we first discuss current understandings of vision and of Directed Motivational Currents, and then analyse how they may be optimally integrated and employed to create effective motivational pathways in language learning environments.

At present, motivation is gaining a special significance in the organization management process. It has become a management function that encourages people to work. The objective of a well-organized motivation system is to determine rewards at a level appreciated by the subordinate and to set ambitious but achievable goals. One of a number of such rewards is the promotion understood as moving a person to a higher position in the organization's hierarchy. An organization in which this type of motivational tool plays an important role is the State Forests National Forest Holding (hereinafter: the State Forests) - an organizational unit having no legal personality and operating for over ninety years. The purpose of this paper is to explain motivation techniques used in the State Forests based on the example of Antonin Forest Inspectorate. The study focuses on the promotion as the most important and most effective motivational incentive for the State Forests staff (15.32% of the surveyed said so).

The paper presents the key substantial and methodological aspects of motivation for work, with special attention paid to the analysis of classification of motivating factors. The selected, more important of them, have been described. A new approach to them has been presented in the form of the concept of trychotomy of motivating factors at work (i.e. in the environment, in the situation of work), which constitutes the evolution of the two-factor theory by Frederick Herzberg. This concept lists three groups of factors: "motivators" give satisfaction when present, "factors of hygiene" cause dissatisfaction when not present, and "demotivators" cause dissatisfaction when present. Their vectors of effect on satisfaction with work differ radically, although they are present at the same time in the work environment. That is why this concept constitutes the methodological directive which suggests expansion of the field of analysis of the conducted research by the factors which reduce motivation in the workplace.

The study examined the relationship between metacognitive learning strategies and motivational beliefs, predicting academic performance of student teachers. The main aim of the study was to examine the predictive value of motivational beliefs and metacognitive learning strategies for students’ academic performance. In the study 307 student teachers of the Faculty of Education completed the revised version of Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (Pintrich & de Groot, 1990). Regression analyses revealed that a higher sense of self-efficacy predicted better academic performance and a higher test anxiety predicted poorer academic performance. The implications of motivational orientation for cognitive engagement and self-regulation at the faculty are discussed.

The article is devoted to the concept of creating a motivational dictionary of modern Ukrainian legal vocabulary, which is a lexicographic description of motivational associations generated by a word during its perception and semantization and obtained as a result of a directed associative experiment. This article presents a psycholinguistic study that motivatedness is understood as the property of a word, which allows realizing the conditionality of the connection meaning (the content) and the sound shape of the word (expression) on the basis of the correlation of the word with the linguistic, extra-linguistic reality and mental categories. Definition of classification parameters of the concept of motivation (motivatedness) applied for terminology research and development of methodological principles of the motivation research of terminology vocabulary. The role of the associative experiment in studying the potential of the word motivation is fundamental, since it is the associative experiment that allows the legal researcher to identify the comprehension, awareness by the native speakers of the motivational associativity of the lexical units of the modern Ukrainian legal text, to move from observing and analyzing the motivational activity of a limited number of words to a systematic study of the potential of the whole lexical array of language, thereby providing valuable material for lek a sycographic and theoretical description of the motivation of words, because the experimental data, determining the degree of manifestation of motivational nature, make it possible to classify lexical units into motivated and unmotivated, highly motivated and weakly motivated ones, reveal the existence of motivational-associative stereotypes or their absence, the ratio of the motivationalassociative standard and deviations from it. With the help of materials obtained using an associative experiment, the development of the word motivation, the similarity or difference of its modern formal-semantic interpretation can be revealed. In modern linguistics, it is commonly accepted that words (meaning of words) are motivated, depending on the preservation of the internal form of the word.

How do they see the role of educa-tion in their career paths as well as in life-long learning? We conducted our research in this fi eld in the second half of last year. In this essay, we are publishing some partial results of that research in order to prove the hypothesis made during our studies.

This article reports a study investigating the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) awareness-raising on Iranian university students’ overall as well as variable-specific L2 motivation. The 136 participants (107 males, 29 females) were divided into a control group and an experimental group, both of which completed the same motivation questionnaire at the beginning and end of the study, with the latter receiving EI awareness-raising in seven sessions over a seven-week period. The results of paired and independent sample t tests showed that EI awareness-raising did not have any statistically significant positive effect on Iranian university students’ overall L2 motivation, but they had a statistically significant positive effect on the Instrumentality- prevention aspect of L2 motivation. The study highlights the importance of becoming familiar with and applying three motivational strategies which may be considered as universal motivational strategies.

Motivation is widely accepted to be a crucial aspect of language learning, and a variety of models of motivation have been proposed over the years. The L2 Motivational Self System is a particularly interesting model that reconceptualizes motivation as a function of possible future self-guides, and has far-reaching pedagogical implications. Critics have pointed out that there is little evidence connecting L2 Motivational Self System to attainment, as it is inconsistently correlated with L2 proficiency and is only a weak predictor of results. However, as this paper details, these criticisms ignore the correlation between the L2 Motivational Self System and other behaviors and attitudes associated with attainment, such as willingness to communicate, self-efficacy, persistent learning, and low L2 anxiety.

The subject matter of the paper is motivation for second language learning under specific conditions of military service in the Czech Armed Forces. Motivation is the fundamental source of any human action, influencing goals and objectives, attitudes and efforts but also results achieved by each individual. As such, motivation belongs to the most important factors of learners´ success. The paper is based on an explanatory research perspective, aiming at identifying the relative importance of different factors of motivation in second language learning. The presented paper methodology consists of a questionnaire survey, followed by an analysis and interpretation of gathered data. The research material, covered by the survey, is the motivation of the Czech Armed Forces personnel attending foreign language courses to learn second foreign language at the University of Defence Language Centre in 2022. This survey has been designed to enable language educators to identify and further analyse relative significance of individual motivational factors and their perception by second language learners as either internal, or external. As the survey outcomes show, the Czech military personnel motivation to learn second foreign language is not primarily generated by their current job needs and requirements. At the same time, the Czech military personnel attending foreign language courses perceive their learning motivation as predominantly internal.

This article is an extension of research on motivation to learn using the assumptions of self-determination theory (SDT). The learning self-regulation questionnaire (SRQ-L) was used to diagnose the type of motivation and motivational profiles. Students declared in their grades that they were motivated to study primarily by autonomous regulation. The high impact of this regulation was pointed out by the respondents in the group of women studying at the first cycle of studies and not being managers. A low strength of motivation dominated among the diagnosed motivational profiles, represented by 30% of all the respondents. Good quality motivation was observed only among 19% of students.
