Opis:
The article, based on the results of nationwide sociological research, answers the questions of the extent to which religion actually determines the Poles’ behaviours. It analyses the ways in which people cope with cognitive dissonance between their religious identity and their opinions/habits etc. which do not conform with the official teaching of the Catholic Church. It also examines the issue of social expectations about changes in the Church and its teachings.

Opis:
Religiousness of people who perceive themselves as believers, but who do not participate or rarely participate in religious practice, takes a form of spirituality when in their own perception they do no harm to others, which in turn is interpreted as abiding by the rules |of Christian morality. Striving for perfection is both a religious attitude and spirituality in one due to both internal consciousness of one’s imperfection, as well as external consciousness of the imperfection of other people (49% believe that there are good and bad people depending on the circumstances). Moreover, these people treat religiousness and morality as private matters which cannot be governed by any institutions, including the Catholic Church. Extending the perception of God to a concept of impersonal “higher power” leads to a situation where the belief in destiny understood in an esoteric way is present even in declarations of deeply devout people who participate in religious practice systematically. As a result of that the concept of sacrum is also extended and includes any forms of life and existence in the universe, interpreted in a religious sense (pantheism and panentheism), as well as the rule of common good (supermorality) which is entailed in the conviction that one cannot break this order, so do evil. Moreover, the anthropomorphisation in the world of nature results in moral values taking the form of pan-morality and being transferred to the whole world of nature. They cover not only people, but also the nature itself.

Opis:
Artykuł omawia relację prawa i moralności w rozwiązywaniu problemów prawnych.
This article describes the relation between law and morality when applied to solving legal problems. The relation in question is not understood solely as a conflict between law and morality which implies a need to decide in favor of one or the other. Indeed, moral contents of law make references to morality not only possible but necessary. The limit for those references is established by legal equality principle. Moreover, an internal variety of morality is being analyzed. Some part of it needs to be secured by law what in itself does not harm social and individual identity, that is, public and private morality is distinguished, then minimal and maximal morality – concepts proposed by Michael Walzer. That idea taken from a legal point of view leads to seemingly best funded proposal: particular and cooperative morality.

The Bible says that "all authority comes from God." But what if the authority is corrupt and abusive? The author of the article analyses the duty to resist a corrupt authority when it threatens inalienable human rights, the common good or the sacredness of authority itself, for example a tyranny or an act of an usurpation. The author examines the conditions which must be fulfilled in order that such forms of resistance as: admonition, protest, rebellion (civic disobedience), strike and uprising can be legitimate. It is important to bear in mind the obligation to obey even a corrupt authority insofar as it can be objectively stated that it serves the common good.

The aim of the article is to present tensions that occur in social, cultural, political, and technological spheres as the result of the development of postmodern societies. The changes that have been taking place in those areas involve, along with unquestionable benefits, a type of risk which, without any moral reflection, can cause a serious global crisis in the world. The postmodern times should be understood as the continuation of the modern formation where all typical features of modernism take a more radical form. The postmodern specific style of life is characterized by: uncertainty, unpredictability of future, decline of traditional values and morals. What is more, the present postmodern tendencies in the area of morals can hinder the right course of development for society, economy and ecology.

impact of microeconomic curricula on students’ morality level
Opis:
Since the beginning of the 1980s, a study has been conducted among students of economics in the United States regarding their propensity for cooperation, philanthropy and keeping promises. Regardless of the methods used, the research results have shown lower readiness for cooperation among students of economics in comparison to students of other disciplines. Moreover, the results are even worse after completing a microeconomics course. Based on these findings, two hypotheses have been formulated: the auto-selection hypothesis and the indoctrination hypothesis. The aim of the paper is to formulate implications regarding the indoctrination hypothesis. A massive attendance at economic studies in Poland is an argument against the auto-selection hypothesis. However, unless the research is completed, this hypothesis cannot be rejected. The indoctrination hypothesis is more attractive due to the special cognitive and moral condition of post-communist society which economic studies lecturers are members of and due to the economic situation of higher education institutions. These circumstances which accompany the studying of economics in Poland favour, firstly, the introduction of highly specialised curricula which do not prepare students for understanding economic activity as a means for good life. Secondly, economic knowledge is interpreted by lecturers as a set of instructions to manipulate market players. Thirdly, lecturers’ attitudes and activities reflecting the principle that what is not legally prohibited is allowed are “awarded” with a higher financial status. These implications will be made probable by the analysis of the curricula and content of lectures in economic schools. Attention will be mostly focused on microeconomics; the main “defendant” accused of indoctrination in the American studies.

The paper concentrates on the views of Polish philosophers of law, who in the period 1918–1939 were presenting their opinion about the necessity of the separation of law from morality. Leon Petrażycki (1867–1931), Szymon Rundstein (1876–1942), Eugeniusz Jarra (1881–1973), Antoni Peretiatkowicz (1884–1956), Czesław Znamierowski (1888–1967), Eugeniusz Bautro (1891–1961) and Henryk Piętka (1900–1959) were the most outstanding lawyer-philosophers of this period, who dealt with the essence of law, different kinds of legal norms and the relations between the norms. They represented different schools of law and their views about law differed substantially. But their views on the separation of law from morality were similar in many aspects. The majority of them agreed on the separation of law from morality, following the Immanuel Kant’s and his followers’ approach on this topic. There was one important exception. Leon Petrażycki, the most outstanding Polish philosopher of law at that time, created the so called psychological theory of law. He criticized Kant’s and Kant’s followers’ approach, but the conclusions were quite similar.

The classicist, Christianized iteration of the myth of Phaedra demonstrates the particular nature of the tensions between Christian metaphysics and social morality. Based on the Pascal’s paradox of the righteous sinner. Racines Phèdre not only represents a certain historical, Jansenist system of values, but also makes it possible to see anew the aporias that have characterized Christian ethics until the present day: its deep anti-politics, the problematic relationship between erotic love, “mercy” and righteousness, the ambivalence of the virtue of temperance, or the connection between metaphysical purity and impersonalorder.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to provoke discussion on the worship of images depicting saints. However, it is not about defending this worship, since this issue has already been definitively settled by the Church. Instead, the article concerns a new problem – the controversies that arose in connection with some modern depictions of saints, mainly in painting. The mildest of these controversies involve paintings, often made on the basis of surviving photographs, showing saints during their ordinary everyday activities, e.g. while working or resting. A much sharper polarization of opinions occurs when the painting reveals the ethos of the saint with all realism, that is including also their imperfections, and even sin. Can such a saint be an object of veneration which, after all, inherently entails following them as role models? Is such veneration not an acceptance and promotion of flaws that contradict biblical morality? Can such images serve a didactic function? Instead, wouldn’t a certain idealization be advisable – the portrayal of a saint as someone perfect, excluding their flaws and weaknesses? The author takes a position on these controversies by formulating criteria for “good” images based on the theological and moral principles of their worship and an analysis of their functions.

Contemporary societies are increasingly pluralistic, even in terms of their values, ideals, and norms of behavior. What should the state and its institution’s attitude be toward citizens who have different and sometimes contradictory views on moral issues? One proposition is the principle of neutrality, particularly in the most controversial areas. This article outlines the characteristics of basic models of ethical neutrality and their practical application in specific areas of social life. A critical assessment of the consequences of introducing this principle sheds light on the need to search for a different definition of the state’s role in morality.

While in the case of respondents over 50, religiosity is characterized by a location between the stability of religiosity and increasing ritualization or religious indifference, in the case of respondents under 40 it is between distance and aversion or even aversion. The study characterizes this social change in relation to the religious identification of the respondents, their acceptance of some dogmatic issues, their attitude towards the Church and Catholic morality.
