    In this paper I analyze one of the first collections of poems for children in the SCBM language, Niz dragocijenoga bisera ili Duhovne i moralne pjesme za djecu by Jovan Sundečić (Zadar 1856, Cetinje 1865). Although many have stated that it is one of the first original publications intended for children and young readers of the South Slavic area, there has been no detailed analysis of it until now. In the introductory part of the paper, I will look at the circumstances which led to creation of literature for children and young people, in the central part, through the analysis of Sundečić’s book, I will show why Romanticism in children’s literature inevitably intertwined with Enlightenment, and I will try to illuminate the socio-historical circumstances that led to the reprint. In the conclusion, I make an evaluation of the book from the viewpoint of Romanticism, as the period in which it was created, as well as the contemporary moment, which tends to mark the timeless literary qualities.

    I begin this bilingual (Bosnian-English) hybrid (scholarly-personal-fictional) essay, with my search for queer languages of my own, a fraught, complex process both due to my personal circumstances of immigration, and the larger history of suppression of queer expression in the Balkans and beyond. For the throughline of the discussion, I use the relatively recent portmanteau in English, bussy (boy+pussy for the anus), that has given birth to a wealth of Internet memes often featuring similar coinages, and my attempt to find its equivalents in several other languages. English and Bosnian will alternate, with their subcategories ranging from academic to confessional — so only those who read both will be able to understand everything. I first look at the Soviet Russian gay slang recorded by Vladimir Kozlovsky and then move to a fuller discussion of the Turkish queer jargon named Lubunca, which like its Greek counterpart Kaliardá, has a prominent corpus of Romani borrowings. Some of these words appear in an almost identical form, with the same or similar meanings, in a number of European languages that I am familiar with: Bosnian, English, French, and German. While my queerness does not happen to provide a sense of linguistic belonging, it does enable me to note a much-neglected postcolonial queer aspect of the European language map, the Romani element, which I happily write about in the essay. As for bussy and its translations, I argue that such terms – playfully confusing and reassigning holes in English and other languages, in recent and distant times – present occasions for queerer, more pleasurable and expansive imaginings of human bodies, desires, and the world around us.

    Montenegro’s independence in 2006 and the introduction of Montenegrin as an official language in the Republic of Montenegro paved the way for institutional ized normative work on the Montenegrin language, in which the phonemes ś and ź officially appeared as full-fledged. Thus, the official Montenegrin language is the only South Slavic language and the third, next to Polish and Lower Sorbian, to have in its phonemic stock the soft spirants analyzed in the paper. The purpose of this analysis is to present and compare Polish and Montenegrin spirants ś and ź in terms of genetic description and their contemporary status. Such a comparison does not ignore dialectal contexts.

    This article offers a discussion of various images of the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The end of the independence of this city-state was a watershed event not only in political terms and in terms of statehood, but also in the social, cultural and economic spheres. The study focuses on the occupation of Dubrovnik by the French and the siege by the Russians and Montenegrins (fighting for supremacy over it), as well as on the hopes associated with the emergence of a new reality. In doing so it analyzes examples of literary testimonies describing the events, phenomena and processes that took place at that time. The article is framed by the fundamental dissertation Pad Dubrovnika [The Fall of Dubrovnik] by Lujo Vojnović, which, despite the fact that it was published in 1908, grows out of nostalgia for the Republic and the ideological atmosphere of the nineteenth century.
    Artykuł podejmuje próbę omówienia różnorodnych obrazów upadku Republiki Dubrownickiej na początku XIX wieku. Kres niezależności tego miasta-państwa oznaczał przełom nie tylko w sferze politycznej i państwowej, ale także w sferze społecznej, kulturalnej i gospodarczej. Szczególną uwagę poświęcam okupacji Dubrownika przez Francuzów oraz oblężeniu przez Rosjan i Czarnogórców (walczących o zwierzchnictwo nad nim), ale i nadziejom, z jakimi wiązano nastanie nowej rzeczywistości. Poddaję analizie przykłady literackich świadectw opisujące wydarzenia, zjawiska i procesy, jakie wówczas miały miejsce. Ramy artykułu wyznacza fundamentalna dla tematu upadku Dubrownika rozprawa Luja Vojnovicia Pad Dubrovnika [Upadek Dubrownika], która mimo tego, że została wydana w 1908 roku, wyrasta z nostalgii za Republiką i z atmosfery ideowej XIX stulecia.

    The aim of the article is to analyze state-diaspora relations, using Montenegro as an example. The literature on the topic shows a visible lack of thorough studies of this phenomenon. Montenegro is an interesting case, since the number of people living in diasporas is comparable to the total population of the state. The article is divided into four parts. Part one presents theoretical consideration of the diaspora, as well as the state-diaspora relations. Part two features a brief characterization of the diasporas in Montenegro, its history and migration directions. Part three is an analysis of relations between Montenegro and the diaspora. Particular attention is given to the process of institutionalization of these relations. The article ends with conclusions.
    Celem artykułu jest dokonanie analizy relacji państwo-diaspora na przykładzie Czarnogóry. W literaturze przedmiotu zauważalny jest brak dogłębnych badań tego zjawiska. Czarnogóra stanowi interesujący przypadek ze względu fakt, że liczba osób żyjących w diasporach jest porównywalna do liczby mieszkańców tego państwa. Artykuł składa się z czterech części. Pierwsza z nich stanowi przedstawienie rozważań teoretycznych na temat diaspor, ale także relacji państwo-diaspora. W kolejnej została pokrótce scharakteryzowana czarnogórska diaspora - jej historia, liczebność oraz kierunki emigracji. Trzecia część stanowi analizę kształtowanych przez Czarnogórę relacji z diasporą. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na proces instytucjonalizacji owych stosunków. Artykuł kończy podsumowanie.

    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie roli symboliki narodowej w procesach tożsamościowych w naznaczonym podziałami 620-tysięcznym społeczeństwie Czarnogóry, które w 2006 r. podjęło decyzję o państwowym usamodzielnieniu się. Analizie poddano czarnogórskie przedsięwzięcia z zakresu polityki symboli i towarzyszące im spory, przy jednoczesnym uwzględnieniu szerszego kontekstu społeczno-politycznego i historycznego omawianych zjawisk. Przykład czarnogórski pokazuje, jak sprzeczna może być rola symboli narodowych w warunkach polaryzacji społecznej. Spory o symbolikę stają się swoistym papierkiem lakmusowym, ujawniającym istniejące podziały polityczne i tożsamościowe. W nieustannym negocjowaniu tożsamości każdy, najdrobniejszy nawet element symboliki urasta do rangi kwestii o fundamentalnym znaczeniu.

    Language and Identity: The Case of MontenegroThe Montenegrin language was established as the official language of newly independent Montenegro in 2007. However, the idea of a separate Montenegrin language remained dormant until the mid-1990s, when a small group of Montenegrin pro-independence intellectuals, aiming to reconstruct all the trappings of a separate Montenegrin identity, started to emphasize the distinctiveness of the language of Montenegrins. How did it happen that once being a marginal idea, Montenegrin became the native language for almost 37 percent of the Montenegrin population in 2011? This article is an attempt to answer this question. It provides a brief overview of the language situation in Montenegro from the time of socialist Yugoslavia to the independence era, paying attention to the changes in the political elites’ attitudes towards the language issue. The standardization process of the Montenegrin language is described by focusing on the aspects, which are considered most significant from the perspective of identity. The paper also describes how the Montenegrin language is being narratized so that the language narrative is being produced as a part of the broader narrative about the Montenegrin identity. Finally, an analysis of the last two censuses’ data reveals changes in the population structure in Montenegro according to nationality and mother tongue between 2003 and 2011, i.e. the period when the issues of identity and language became extremely politicized. Język a tożsamość: przypadek CzarnogóryJęzyk czarnogórski został uznany za język urzędowy niepodległej Czarnogóry w 2007 roku. Temat odrębnego języka w Czarnogórze został nagłośniony dopiero w połowie lat 90. ubiegłego wieku przez niewielką grupę zorientowanych niepodległościowo intelektualistów, dążących do rekonstrukcji wszystkich aspektów odrębnej tożsamości czarnogórskiej. Podstawowe pytanie, na które artykuł odpowiada, brzmi: jak to się stało, że choć idea odrębności językowej była początkowo marginalna, język czarnogórski był w 2011 roku językiem ojczystym dla prawie 37 proc. ludności Czarnogóry? Artykuł przedstawia krótki zarys sytuacji językowej w Czarnogórze od czasów socjalistycznej Jugosławii do czasów niepodległości, z uwzględnieniem ewolucji w podejściu elit politycznych do kwestii języka czarnogórskiego. Omawia też przebieg i kluczowe aspekty procesu standaryzacji języka czarnogórskiego, uznane za istotne z punktu widzenia tożsamości. Kolejnym aspektem jest narratyzowanie języka czarnogórskiego i będąca jego wynikiem narracja o języku czarnogórskim jako części szerszej czarnogórskiej narracji tożsamościowej. Wreszcie – analiza danych spisów ludności z lat 2003 i 2011 ukazuje przemiany, które zaszły w strukturze narodowościowej i językowej w Czarnogórze w omawianym okresie, kiedy kwestie tożsamości i języka uległy silnej polityzacji.
