Opis:
We describe an additional fragmentary upper molar and the first lower molar known of Monotrematum sudamericanum, the oldest Cenozoic (Paleocene) monotreme. Comparisons suggest that the monotreme evolution passed through a stage in which their molars were “pseudo−triangulate”, without a true trigonid, and that the monotreme pseudo−triangulate pattern did not arise through rotation of the primary molar cusps. Monotreme lower molars lack a talonid, and consequently there is no basin with facets produced by the wearing action of a “protocone”; a cristid obliqua connecting the “talonid“ to the “trigonid” is also absent. We hypothesize that acquisition of the molar pattern seen in Steropodon galmani (Early Cretaceous, Albian) followed a process similar to that already postulated for docodonts (Docodon in Laurasia, Reigitherium in the South American sector of Gondwana) and, probably, in the gondwanathere Ferugliotherium.

Introduction. There are reports in literature which indicate the connection between impacted third molars and occurrence of symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunctions and headaches. Objectives. The aim of this study was evaluation of the outcome of patients who reported specific symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction and had impacted mandibular third molars. Materials and method. The research material consisted of 10 women who reported to the Department of Craniomandibular Disfunctions of the Medical University in Lublin, Poland, with pain and acoustic symptoms in the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area. During preliminary therapy, the patients used a silicone occlusal device; ionotherapy was ordered and the patients were recommended to eliminate parafunctions. Results. Clicks before treatments were present in 6 patients, after treatment with silicone occlusal device and ionotherapy with Profenid gel in 5 patients, while two years after extraction of the impacted teeth the clicks were no longer present, and differences in the presence of clicks analyses by means of the Q-Cochran test were statistically significant between examinations 1m vs.3 (Q=10.33; p<0.01) and examinations 2 vs.3 (Q=8.40; p<0.05). Conclusions. The study showed that extraction of the mandibular third molars can cause regression of some symptoms of craniomandibular disorders.

Morphological variations can occur in human teeth. Developmental dental disorders occur either due to the abnormalities in the differentiation of the dental lamina and the tooth germs (anomalies in number, size and shape) or to abnormalities in the formation of the dental hard tissues (anomalies in structure). When such variations occur, they are more interesting to clinicians, anthropologists, and forensic dentists. Now, fusion and gemination aren’t an uncommon finding and affected mostly primary dentition and the permanent maxillary incisors. However, gemination of the posterior teeth is rare; permanent all the more than primary teeth. Gemination of a premolar is one such rare anomaly that arises when a single premolar tooth bud attempts to divide. Here, we present a case of gemination associated with the mandibular second premolar, showing a prodigious and unusual crown and root morphology.

Different grades of magnetic cobalt ferrite (Co_xFe_{3-x}O₄) nanoparticles were synthesized with various molar ratios of Fe²⁺ to Co²⁺ ions in the initial salt solutions method with using contact non-equilibrium plasma. The crystal structure and morphology of the nanoparticles are obtained from X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies. With an increase in the value of x, the saturation magnetization for the samples of CoFe₂O₄ has decreased from 150.9 emu/g to 1.2 emu/g. The dependence of the coercive force on x is extremal with a plateau maximum corresponding to the x=0.5-1.25.

Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia may develop after a molar, term, ectopic pregnancy, or an abortion. The diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia can be made solely based on changes in human chorionic gonadotropin levels without pathologic confirmation. It is important to distinguish molar pregnancy from that disease, as treatment for these entities differs. However, gestational trophoblastic neoplasia developing after a term or ectopic pregnancy, or an abortion may be difficult to diagnose, because there is no tissue confirmation. In such cases, the time between a previous pregnancy event and the current event, and an inconsistency between very high levels of human chorionic gonadotropin and the size of lesions in the uterine cavity may be warning signs of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. The role of curettage in the treatment of the disease is limited. We present a case of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia that developed after an abortion, serving as a reminder illustration that gestational trophoblastic neoplasia can develop not only after molar pregnancies, but also after other pregnancy events.

A recently (Krause 2001) reported fragmentary mammalian lower molar (University of Antananarivo, UA 8699) from the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) of Madagascar, was attributed to Marsupialia, for which far reaching paleobiogeographical conclusions were made. The five characters used to identify UA 8699 as a marsupial are not exclusive to Late Cretaceous marsupials, but are found also in some placental mammals, notably in Late Cretaceous ungulatomorph zhelestids, known from various Upper Cretaceous strata in Asia, Europe, and NorthAmerica (Nessov et al. 1998). Identification of UA 8699 as a zhelestid placental is in keeping withmyriad other faunal similarities between Europe and Africa/Madagascar.

There is no freely available illustration for the accidental displacement pathways of the upper wisdom teeth imaged by CT scan or by CBCT apart from displacement towards the infra-temporal, and the pterygopalatine fossa. We describe and illustrate by CBCT a unique case in the medical literature of accidental displacement of the wisdom tooth germ of the upper jaw into the anterior jugal space. The potential reasons, consequences and ways to prevent this rare complication of wisdom tooth extraction are also explained.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. The prevalence of Molar-Incisors Hypomineralization (MIH) and difficulties in diagnosing the disease make it is necessary to determine the exact diagnostic and therapeutic patterns of management. Because of the higher requirements of patients affected by MIH, restorative management of such teeth is a challenge, both for the physician and for the suffering patient. Brief description of state of knowledge. Many long-term randomized studies and meta-analyses clearly indicate that the etiology of occurrence of molar-incisor hypomineralization is multifactorial. Most often it is a combination of systemic and genetic factors. Currently, one of the widely-discussed factors is deficiency of vitamin D as a key factor in the process of enamel development. The study describes current information about Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization, and presents a clinical approach after diagnosis according to protocol which facilities planning of the subsequent stages. Conclusions. The preventive or treatment procedure of MIH should also engage the guardians / parents of the children. The disease undiagnosed in time, due to its pain implications, can lead to problems in dental treatment. Often, the lack of awareness of dentists having no knowledge about the prevalence of MIH, leads to drawing erroneous conclusions and determining therapeutic solutions harmful to the patient, including extraction of the teeth affected by the disease.

Opis:
The Middle Jurassic mammal Shuotherium has lower molars that possess a trigonid and talonid, but are unique in having the talonid situated in front of the trigonid, rather than behind it, as in molars of usual tribosphenic pattern. Shuotherium dongi Chow and Rich, 1982 was based on a dentary bearing seven teeth, originally interpreted as three premolars and four molars. Based on comparison with other groups of early mammals, we reinterpret the premolar–molar boundary in the holotype of S. dongi, and propose a dental formula of four (or more) premolars and three molars. The ultimate lower premolar (previously identified as the first molar) has a completely developed trigonid and no talonid or pseudo−talonid. We hypothesize that the mesial cingulid on molars of Australosphenida is a highly plausible structural antecedent to the pseudo−talonid of Shuotherium. This and other shared, derived features support a relationship of Shuotherium and Australosphenida as sister−taxa. We hypothesize that the common ancestor of Shuotherium + Australosphenida had a global distribution no younger than early Middle Jurassic, and that the respective clades diverged prior to full separation of Gondwanan and Laurasian landmasses.

Seeking to obtain bulk (NPK – nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), chlorine-free fertilizers, the influence of interaction between potassium chloride and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate in aqueous solutions at temperature of 20, 40, 60 and 80°C has been investigated. Components of the solid phase have been identified by methods of chemical and instrumental analysis: radiography (X – ray), infra – red molecular absorption spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It has been observed that the largest amount of solid state potassium dihydrogen phosphate was obtained at 60–80°C, when the potassium chloride and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate molar ratio is equal 0.8:0.2. Changing the molar ratio of 0.5:0.5 to 0.8:0.2, and with increasing temperature, various shaped crystals have developed in the remaining aqueous solutions with a morphology shifting from sharp needles to tetragonal prism.

The dilatometric and maximum bubble pressure methods were applied for the measurements of the density and surface tension of liquid (Ag-Sn)eut +Zn lead-free solders. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range from 515 to 1223 K for the alloys of the zinc concentration equaling 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 of the mole fraction. It was found that the temperature dependence of both the density and the surface tension could be thought as linear, so they were interpreted by straight line equations. The experimental data of the molar volume of the investigated alloys were described by the polynomial dependent on the composition and temperature. Calculations of the surface tension by Butler’s equation were conducted and confronted with the experimental data. Some significant deviations between the experimental and the calculated surface tension were observed. They reached almost 40 mNm-1. The observed changes of the density and surface tension caused by the zinc addition to the Ag-Sn eutectic were discussed with the consideration of the thermodynamic properties and the influence of a small quantity of impurities in a protective gas atmosphere.

This paper presents the results of research on aluminum silicate sanitary glazes in the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-Na2O system with different SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio. XRD, SEM-EDS and FITR measurement indicated that SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio has a significant impact on the phase composition of the obtained glazes. Glass-ceramic glazes were obtained that consisted of both the glass phase and pseudowollastonite (Ca3[SiO3]3) or anorthite (Ca[Al2Si2O8]) crystals. Subsequently, the influence of phase composition on surface quality (roughness) was examined for the obtained samples. On the basis of the conducted examination of glaze surface roughness was observed that glazes of extreme SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio are characterized with greatest surface roughness when compared to other glazes.
