Opis:
The main objective of the study was to evaluate inter-annual ring-width variation and cumulative growth of aspen (Populus tremula L.) trees growing on the spots of different soil CO2 concentration at natural mofette site. We hypothesized that growth rate of trees is affected by CO2 concentration within their rooting zone. The study site was situated in the flood plain of Plesná stream near Hartoušov (Western Bohemia). Trees growing in a pure aspen stand were selected according to the CO2-gas regime within their rooting zone. Five high [CO2] trees (10–25% CO2 in the soil) and five low [CO2] trees (up to 3% CO2 in the soil) were sampled. Stem growth analysis of each trunk was carried out to study growth pattern in detail. High and low [CO2] trees significantly differed in a growth rate. At the age of 25 years, the basal area of high [CO2] trees exceeded low [CO2] trees by 39 %. The positive effect of CO2 on annual increment was pronounced particularly in the years with optimal growing conditions. Results suggest that trees can be fertilized not only by elevated atmospheric CO2 but also when fed with CO2 via the roots.

Opis:
The final product of a post-volcanic activity is the exhalation of low-temperature (<100°C) gases containing mostly carbon dioxide. The phenomenon is called mofettes, which are often used for therapeutic treatments in the form of dry CO2 spas. Along its pathway to the surface, the deep origin gas also intakes different radon isotopes from the rocks and soils; therefore, the risks associated with radon exposures should also be a concern. In this work, we have found that the 222Rn activity concentration in the mofette gas of Mátraderecske is particularly high; it is in the order of 200 kBq•m–3. However, owing to the carefully designed flow pattern of mofette gas and fresh air, the radon level is about 1 kBq∙m–3 at the breath level of the staff, accompanying the treatment, which is the radon reference level for workers in Hungary. We have also found that in this dry spa, radon is a good tracer of CO2; therefore, it can be used to monitor the CO2 distribution in the treatment pools.

Opis:
The most beautiful Polish mofette occurs in the Sądecki (Sącz) Beskid, within the Krynica tectonic-facial zone of the Magura Unit (Inner Carpathians). It is located in the Złocki Stream upstream of the Złockie village in the Muszyna commune. The occurrence has numerous exhalations of CO2 in the valley floor and on the sides of this boggy stream as well as in the „Zatopione” and „Bulgotka” springs. It is also the site of the dry exhalation „Dychawka”. The floor of the valley is covered with gelatinous rusty-brown deposits of iron oxyhydroxides that precipitate either due to chemical or organic processes (the latter initiated by numerous microorganisms, mainly ferruginous bacteria). The site is legally protected as the Professor Henryk Świdziński monument of inanimate nature. In September 2005 it was made accessible for tourists and currently is an important geological attraction in the Popradzki Landscape Park.
