Opis:
The design dimensions of the executive hydraulic cylinders of the brake system of heavy-duty mining dump trucks cause high fluid flow during the braking process. Therefore, dimensions of the anti-blocking system modulator spool pair require unique electromagnets or hydraulic amplifiers to control. These solutions do not allow the required modulator performance. Thus, a modulator scheme with a division of the flow of fluid from the source to the brake cylinders was developed. This scheme allows during emergency braking passing, an additional amount of fluid to cylinders through the valve, installed parallel to the main valve upon pressure increase phase and controlled by the pressure difference. The task is to develop a method for calculating the main structural dimensions of a modulator. The calculation of the valve of the second cascade, installed in parallel to the main stage, is carried out for the emergency braking mode with the maximum flow rate to ensure the required performance of the braking system. The balance of fluid flows equations is compiled at the key points. The flow rate of the fluid through each of the valves is determined by the Torricelli formula, and the pressure difference across the valves is assuned equal. The obtained relations allows building a family of Q-p curves, which can be used to select the diameter and stroke of the additional valve depending on the flow rate in the brake system.

Opis:
Spatial light modulators (SLMs) are versatile devices used for optical studies. These instruments have a wide area of application in photonics. Additionally, SLMs have potential utility in different applications, such as biomedical applications, laser based surgery for precise cutting and as optical tweezers to separate cells in a petri container. However, the high cost of SLM devices prevents their widespread use in many areas, including industrial areas and scientific research laboratories. This paper demonstrates how to design a digital light processor (DLP) based low-cost SLM and describes how to obtain structured electromagnetic waves with the designed SLM. Therefore, this research was undertaken to design and produce a low-cost SLM device for optical applications. For this purpose, two prerequisites had to be fulfilled, the first was to use suitable components of a projection device with DLP-based digital micro-mirror device (DMD), and the second was to eliminate unnecessary SLM components from the system. Finally, holographic images reflected on the SLM screen were created by using Mathematica software program to change the amplitude and phase of the electromagnetic waves in order to obtain the structured electromagnetic waves.

Opis:
A novel approach to photonic generation of triangular radio frequency waveforms with a tunable repetition rate is proposed and analyzed. In the proposed system, a continuous-wave light is modulated by a reference microwave signal through a polarization modulator, and then its output optical sidebands are manipulated by a microwave photonic filter with a negative tap. By properly adjusting the system parameters, full-duty-cycle triangular radio frequency waveforms can be generated after optical-to-electrical conversion, and its repetition rate (frequency) can be tuned in a wide range. A model describing the proposed system is derived, which is verified via computer simulations.

In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new method for optical frequency transfer over fibre. Instead of dual acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) as adopted in the traditional fibre phase noise compensation setup, here an active fibre phase noise compensation scheme with a single acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is used. The configuration simplifies the equipment of the user end while maintaining a high-performance optical frequency transfer stability. We demonstrate an actively stabilized coherent transfer at an optical frequency of 193.55THz over 10-km spooled fibre, obtaining a relative frequency stability (Allan deviation) of 3.84 x 10-16/1 s and 4.08 x 10-18/104 s, which is improved by about 2~3 orders of magnitude in comparison with the one without any phase noise compensation that achieves a relative frequency stability of 1.81 x 10-14/1 s and 2.48 x 10-15/104 s.

Opis:
A simple optical pulse generation scheme for pulsed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and free-space communications is proposed and experimentally and numerically demonstrated, in which continuous-wave light emitted by a distributed feedback-laser diode (DFB-LD) is modulated by a lithium-niobate Mach–Zehnder intensity modulator to generate optical short pulses, and an Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is used to boost transmitting light power. Possibilities of intensity modulators for high speed communications being used to generate optical short pulses for low speed pulsed LiDAR are investigated. The influences of bias voltage of intensity modulator and bit rate of modulation signal on the generated optical pulses are discussed. The pulse width obtained by using the return to zero signal with 33% duty cycle on bit rate of 2.5 and 5 Gbit/s is respectively 128.0 and 63.2 ps, and the corresponding nominal accuracy of pulsed LiDAR is respectively 19.2 and 9.5 mm, and low repetition frequency required by pulsed LiDAR is achieved by coding to high-speed modulation signal. The system performance for free-space communications and pulsed LiDAR is evaluated, respectively. We believe that the proposed scheme is suitable for the integrated system of pulsed LiDAR and free-space communications.

A wavelength conversion scheme is presented experimentally using a wavelength tunable erbium-doped fiber laser as a probe light source and an electroabsorption modulator with a DC bias only.For the input wavelength of 1557nm with a 10-Gb/s non-return to zero signal, the Q value is 10.6and the power penalty is less than 1.5dB at a bit error rate of 10–9 at the probe wavelength of1560nm. Given a fixed Q value of 6, probe wavelengths cover a range of 25nm. Furthermore,the relationship between the range of probe wavelength and the amount of power penalty is alsoinvestigated.

W pracy przestawiono koncepcję i podstawowe właściwości modulatora szerokości impulsu (PWM), w którym zastosowano dodatkową modulację amplitudy fragmentu przebiegu o szerokości równej jednemu okresowi przebiegu taktującego. Celem tej modyfikacji jest zwiększenie rozdzielczości nastawy wartości współczynnika wypełnienia modulatora, pełniącego rolę przetwornika cyfowo-analogowego w wielomiarowym źródle wzorcowego napięcia stałego.
The paper presents the idea and basic properties of a pulse-width modulator (PWM) with additional amplitude modulation of the part of the signal. The width of the amplitude-modulated part is equal to one clock period. The reason of this additional modulation is to increase the resolution of setting the duty cycle of the PWM signal. The modulator is used as a digital to analog converter in an adjustable source of standard dc voltage.

The paper presents definitions and relative measures of the system sensitivity and sensitivity of its errors. The model of a real system and model of an ideal measuring system were introduced. It allows to determine the errors of the system. The paper presents also how to use the error sensitivity analysis carried out on the models of the measuring system to the correction of the nonlinearity error of its static characteristic. The corrective function is determined as a relation between the input variable of the tested system and its chosen parameter. The use of the proposed method has been presented on the example of a phase angle modulator. The obtained results have been compared with the results of analytic calculations. The idea of a phase angle modulator is also presented.

The paper presents a VHDL-AMS based approach to the Switched-Current (SI) Sigma-Delta Modulator design. The prototype VHDL-AMS description, with the help of elaborated EDA tools, is automatically translated into the SI realization. Another tool helps the designer to create the layout. The paper also describes a new current mode comparator, which is used in the design. Postlayout simulation results are presented.

The influence of higher order fiber dispersions (like chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope) on the optical millimeter-wave generation is studied. Optical sideband suppression ratio and radio frequency spurious suppression ratio are given and discussed. Moreover, the mathematical results of the proposed model are verified by experiments and numerical simulations.

W artykule porównano własności metrologiczne przetworników A/D z modulatorami sigma-delta pierwszego i drugiego rzędu stosując analizę w dziedzinie czasu. Wykazano, że przetworniki z modulatorami wyższych rzędów, wykazują w istocie ten sam poziom błędów kwantowania, co przetworniki z modulatorem pierwszego rzędu. Zwrócono również uwagę na istotne niekonsekwencje, pojawiające się w licznych opracowaniach na ten temat, które posługują się analizą w dziedzinie częstotliwości.
In this paper the time domain analysis is used to compare metrological properties of sigma-delta A/D converters with first order modulator and converters with modulators of higher order. Modulators of higher orders are widely advertised for such converters to be used in digital acoustic systems. The paper proves that from the viewpoint of the important metrological property of such converters i.e. the level of quantization error there is no superiority in performance of A/D converters with higher order modulators over converters with modulator of first order. It was confirmed by a simulation experiment, performed using the MICROCAP circuit simulator (Figs. 7 and 8), where the quantization error levels were compared for modulators of first and second order. Moreover, there is pointed out a certain inconsistency present in numerous papers [2, 4, 5] in which the frequency domain analysis is used to explain noise shaping phenomenon. There is no direct digital filtration possible straight at the sigma-delta modulator output and decimation afterwards. In fact both actions are performed by a single counter, which can be described as both, basically decimator and digital filter (Fig.6).

Przetworniki A/D są niezbędne we współczesnych systemach automatyki, wykorzystujących sterowanie komputerowe. Chociaż przetworniki typu Sigma-Delta są obecnie powszechnie stosowane w układach rejestracji cyfrowej sygnałów akustycznych, to m.in. ze względu na ich popularność mogą być również używane w systemach pomiarowych. Jednak wymagania co do jakości przetwarzania przetworników A/D są inne dla zastosowań w systemach akustycznych i pomiarowych, co wynika z diametralnie różnej dynamiki przetwarzanych sygnałów i różnych kryteriów oceny jakości. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przybliżenie problematyki optymalizacji struktur takich przetworników dla aplikacji w systemach akustycznych i pomiarowych.
A/D converters of any type are indispensable in contemporary control systems, employing digital computers. Although converters of Sigma-Delta type are nowadays very common in systems for digital recording of acoustic signals, because they are very popular, can also be used in measurement systems. Quality requirements for both type of applications are different, as acoustic type signals and measurement signals have totally different dynamic and different criteria are used to assess converter performance in each case. This paper attempts to point out certain means used to optimize structures of such converters for acoustic and metrological applications.

The influence of common plant polyamines on feeding behaviour and survival of grain aphid (Sitobion avenae F., Hemiptera: Aphididae) has been studied. Laboratory tests showed that wingless females of S. avenae assimilated higher quantities of food from triticale seedlings placed in 0.01% solutions of agmatine and cadaverine, and lower in case of spermidine and spermine. Increase in the polyamines concentrations up to 0.10% caused strong decrease in food assimilation, especially under the agmatine, cadaverine and putrescine treatment. Moreover, 0.10% concentration of the all analyzed polyamines decreased body mass and reduced survival of grain aphid wingless females. The 0.01% concentration of the polyamines were not affecting survival and body mass of S. avenae with exception of spermidine. Importance of the polyamines as potential natural biopesticides to the grain aphid is discussed.
