    Opis:
    Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), at about the start of the nineteenth century, was advocat‐ ing that the study about religion has to be included in university‐level education in the East. The university he envisioned and founded (Visva‐Bharati) included in its curriculum such a study. Shortly a er India’s regaining independence in 1947 and becoming a secular state, that institution was inaugurated as a central university with an advanced institute for philosophy and the study of religion. This essay answers whether his understanding of studying religion would accommodate the approach to the academic study of religion associated with the mod‐ ern Western research university. It also inquires the extent that the curriculum for the study of religion at Visva‐Bharati evidences such an approach. The answers it advances draw primarily on his two essays, Eastern University and Hindu University, which o er his vision of univer‐ sity level education; on commissioned reports for higher level education in the new India as a secular state; on developments in the academic study of religion in the West, especially the United States; on the relatively recent revised curriculum for such a study at Visva‐Bharati University; and on ideas of social imaginary and the comparative study of religion articulated by Western scholars.

    W artykule przedstawiono publikacje profesora Stefana Sawickiego (ur. 1927 r.) poświęcone idei uniwersytetu katolickiego. Zdaniem autora artykułu najważniejszą kwestią dla Stefana Sawickiego jest relacja między nauką a wiarą, ratio et fides, a więc pytanie o to, czym jest uniwersytet oraz czym uniwersytet katolicki różni się od innych uniwersytetów. Pozostałe kwestie, na przykład sposób nazywania uniwersytetów katolickich, problematyka badawcza, wielkość uniwersytetu czy otwartość na innych a własna tożsamość, wyrastają bezpośrednio z odpowiedzi na te pytania. Teksty Stefana Sawickiego nie dają gotowej odpowiedzi, jak w danym momencie historycznym uniwersytet katolicki powinien być zorganizowany ani jak powinien działać. Ich autor pragnie jednak, aby pobudzały one „do refleksji i dyskusji nad tym, czym powinien i może być obecnie tego typu uniwersytet, zwłaszcza we współczesnej Polsce” (S. Sawicki, O uniwersytecie katolickim, Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Lublin 2012, s. 8). Sawicki dodaje: „Dobrze by też było, aby nie ograniczać się przy tym do ogólnych formuł dotyczących katolickości uczelni, ale podjąć próbę wskazania, jak należy tę katolickość urzeczywistniać w uniwersyteckiej praktyce” (tamże). Można tekstów Sawickiego nie czytać, ale nie można – myśląc o uniwersytecie katolickim – podniesionych przez ich autora kwestii nie dostrzegać.
    The article discusses the publications by Stefan Sawicki (a scholar born in 1927) on the idea of the Catholic university. According to Sawicki, the most important issue in this field is the relation between science and faith (ratio et fides), and the resulting question about the university’s identity, in particular about the marks of a Catholic university. The other issues, such as procedures of giving names to Catholic universities, their research fields, the proper size of a Catholic university, and the balance between the university’s openness to ‘others’ and its guarding its identity, stem directly from this crucial issue. While Stefan Sawicki’s writings will not provide a ready-made answer to the question of how a Catholic university should be structured or how it should function at a given time in history, they may inspire a “reflection and debate on what the university of this type should (and can) be like today, in particular in modern-day Poland” (Stefan Sawicki, On the Catholic University, Lublin: Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, 2012, 8). Sawicki adds: “It might be commendable not to limit the debate in question to the general formulas of the Catholicity of a university, but rather to point how the Catholicity in question should be implemented in the academic practice” (ibidem). The questions raised by Sawicki pertain to an issue which cannot be disregarded also outside the scope of his work. Translated by Dorota Chabrajska

    Począwszy od 2001 roku z inicjatywy badaczy reprezentujących środowisko Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego oraz Misyjnego Seminarium Duchownego Księży Werbistów w Pieniężnie corocznie odbywają się debaty naukowe pod wspólnym hasłem Sacrum i profanum we współczesnym świecie. Ich tematyka dotyczy ważnych problemów współczesnego świata – począwszy od wyzwań i zagrożeń dla pokoju, bezpieczeństwa oraz stabilności w poszczególnych regionach, poprzez problemy globalne, związane z istotą i ewolucją współczesnego ładu światowego, aż po zagadnienia odnoszące się do aksjologicznych i epistemologicznych aspektów funkcjonowania państw i społeczeństw w zmieniającym się świecie. Spotkania te stały się swego rodzaju instytucją, skupiając spore grono badaczy z różnych ośrodków akademickich, a także przykładem inspirującej współpracy naukowców, reprezentujących odmienne dyscypliny badawcze, różne podejścia metodologiczne oraz świeckie i kościelne środowiska akademickie.
    Since 2001, on the initiative of researchers representing the environment of the University of Warsaw and the Theological Seminary in Pieniężno, annual scientific debates are held under the motto “Sacred and profane in the modern world”. Their subject matter concerned important problems of the modern world ranging from challenges and threats to peace, security and stability in individual regions through global problems related to the essence and evolution of the contemporary world order to issues relating to the axiological and epistemological aspects of the functioning of states and societies in a changing world. These meetings have become a kind of institution bringing together a large group of researchers from various academic centres and an example of inspiring cooperation of scientists representing different research disciplines, different methodological approaches as well as secular and ecclesiastical academic environments.
