This paper attempts to present and analyze Andrei Nemzer’s literary criticism which in his opinion is an a priori stance on Russian modern literature and criticism. The author examines Nemzer’s critical discourse in order to reveal his unjustified pride and confidence in the area of literary criticism. The paper presents opinions of other Russian modern critics whose activity is aimed at improving the condition of the domestic literature rather than depreciating it as Nemzer does. The analysis of Nemzer’s texts proves that his criticism within the last decades has gone into the direction of a negative critique of Russian modern literature and thus discouraging young talented writers in Russia.

Modern Catholic social criticism in Heinrich Federer’s publications and prose Heinrich Federer (1866–1928) was one of the most popular German-speaking writers of the pre- and interwar period who fell into oblivion for a half-century as a result of unfortunate policy and propaganda broadcast by publishing houses that pigeonholed his works as both Catholic-mission-like, and provincial regionalist literature (blood-and-soil literature). The breakthrough in reception of his works was achieved in the beginning of the 1980s due to Charles Linsmayer’s publication of anthology of Federer’s texts, which revealed his modern and broad-minded mode of thinking with regard to social issues. Based on selected examples, this article develops and explores the aforementioned hypothesis, indicating a social-critical aspect in Federer’s literary and journalistic work. Following the outline of the autobiographic and historical background, the object of analysis are Federer’s emphasis on social criticism and the postulate of the so-called third way of seeking a solution between capitalism and communism – social market economy, which demonstrate numerous features common with the contemporary Catholic social teaching (Leo XIII’s Rerum novarum, Pius XI’s Quadragesimo anno, Francis’s Sozialenzyklika im Kleinen, Evangelii Gaudium). Therefore, they portray the Swiss writer as a modern social reformer, and his works as a literary presentation of progressive social reforms.

Современная критика предпринимает новые методы для создания привлекательных и широко читаемых текстов. Автор настоящей статьи пытается выявить инновационные тенденции в русскоязычных литературно-критических текстах, публикуемых в престижных журналах. Русские литературные журналы обычно считаются высшим интеллектуальным показателем русской культуры. Тем не менее, последние тексты, опубликованные в литературных журналах, подразумевают агрессию, инвективы и различные лингвистические элементы, характерные для непрофессионального критического дискурса. Поэтому возникла необходимость проанализировать новые идеи, изменяющие традиционную литературную критику в литературных журналах.
Modern contemporary criticism undertakes new methods to create attractive and widely readable texts. The author of the hereby article attempts to identify innovative trends in Russian literary criticism texts published in prestigious magazines. Russian literary magazines are commonly regarded as the highest intellectual indicator of Russian culture. Nevertheless, recent texts published in literary magazines imply aggression, invectives and various linguistic elements typical for unprofessional critical discourse. Therefore, there appeared the need to analyse new ideas altering traditional literary criticism in literary magazines.

In this article, I am discussing the social phenomenon of touchiness (excessive sensitivity to differences of opinion and lifestyle) as a result of the polarization of discourse in contemporary Western culture. This polarization and the resulting touchiness are partly an effect of media, but the later also reflects structural problems of cultures and social practices. The problems arise from the dense network of potentially conflicting values. I am discussing some diagnoses of this phenomenon and some purported philosophical remedies including departure from the language of values and abandoning the idea of a strong subject of action and beliefs. I am criticizing these solutions and I am proposing the idea of radical criticism instead. I am presenting the idea about established theories of philosophical criticism, including those by Horkheimer, Spaemann, Habermas. I am also presenting a practical application of the idea of radical criticism in education: promoting philosophical inquiry in the classroom.

“Traditional” or “Modern”? Methodological Dilemmas of the Contemporary Researchers of Old Polish Literature. Part One: General Remarks and the Case of Postcolonial CriticismThis paper shows the personal reflection of its authors upon the methodological contexts of cultural and literary studies concerning Old Polish literature. Especially those contexts that eagerly and sophisticatedly – though quite superficially – apply the so called “modern” literary theories to the analyses and interpretations of Old Polish texts and – at the same time – disregard their very historical backgrounds. The authors present a fairly sceptical approach towards the blind and unjustifiable, although fashionable, application of “modern” criticism in the given field of research. Instead they emphasise the contextual, secondary character of the possible modern theoretical implications, as  well as the particular, specific character of Old Polish writings. Moreover, wider social factors influencing the methodological decisions taken by the academic community in question (who undoubtedly still favour the traditional, philological method of research and strongly distances itself from the contemporary theoretical thought) have been discussed in great detail. The enclosed analysis of the recent controversial book Fantomowe ciało króla (The Phantom Body of a King, 2011) by Jan Sowa, which deals with the Old Polish history, society, and culture, strongly influenced by the application of modern criticism, in particular the postcolonial part of it, served both as an example of the authors’ argumentation and, at the same time, a warning.

In the first period of her career Urszula Czartoryska (1934–1998) dealt mainly with criticism. She predominantly focused on photography and its relations with other artistic phenomena, particularly from the borderline territory where artistic genres meet, covering also film and video. Two books summed up that stage in her writing career: Przygody plastyczne fotografii (1965) and Od pop-artu do sztuki konceptualnej (1973). Czartoryska’s professional domains extended in 1977 when she began work as the Head and Curator of the newly-established Department of Photography and Visual Techniques at the Museum of Art in Lodz, one of the first multimedia departments in world museology (photography, film, video, multimedia installations), forming part of the International Collection of Modern Art (opened to the public in 1931). The work for that institution did not imply only building the Department’s collection, but also involvement in the operations of the whole Museum, its display and publishing activity. It also impacted her writing activity in the sense that it extended to include research studies mainly on multi-motif inter- or interdisciplinary art. Apart from her work as a writer and museum curator, in 1978– 1993, Czartoryska also lectured: at the University of Lodz (1978–1986), Warsaw School of Photography (1985–1993), and at the State College of Fine Arts (today University of Fine Arts) in Poznan (1989–1993). Urszula Czartoryska represented the type of critic, museologist, and researcher opened to multiplicity of relations present in contemporary art, and drawing from numerous methods of its analysis and description.

The issue of criticism and dogmatism is one of those problems which various sciences contended with in the past and which is difficult to deal with today. It may seem that criticism and dogmatism are completely mutually exclusive, but the history of sciences shows that in the past they constituted two options mutually exclusive in one respect and complementary in the other. I present here such a mutual exclusiveness and complementarity using examples from the area of philosophy and theology. I am convinced, however, that this situation is also present in other disciplines.

W artykule omawiam normatywne aspekty drażliwości – nieadekwatnie silnej reakcji na różnice poglądów i postaw – towarzyszącej współczesnej polaryzacji dyskursu w kulturze Zachodu. Tak jak polaryzacja, drażliwość jest częściowo wytworem medialnym, lecz odzwierciedla również strukturalne problemy kultur i praktyk społecznych opartych na gęstej sieci wartości. Omawiam diagnozy zjawiska i proponowane w filozofii remedia, takie jak odejście od dyskursu opartego na wartościach oraz osłabienie założeń związanych z silnym podmiotem działań i przekonań. Polemizując z tym dwoma rozwiązaniami, proponuję program radykalnego filozoficznego krytycyzmu. Omawiam jego założenia na tle współczesnych teorii krytycznych (między innymi Horkheimera, Spaemanna, Habermasa) oraz pokazuję jego konkretne zastosowanie w praktyce edukacyjnej.

In addition, the number of stars and the scoring of different products is more important than the opinion of a specialist. The author tries to investigate the relationship between “professional” literary criticism and “amateur” blogs on literature. With the advent of e-literature the question on the condition of literary criticism should be reformulated. The author examines the sources of change, takes into account the specificity of writing literary blogs, the relationship between bloggers and publishing market.

Artykuł dotyczy wystaw i recepcji twórczości polsko-żydowskiego rzeźbiarza Eliego Nadelmana, dobrze znanego przede wszystkim w Stanach Zjednoczonych, gdzie mieszkał od 1914 r. oraz w Europie Zachodniej, a zwłaszcza we Francji, gdzie przebywał w latach 1904–1914. Punktem wyjścia rozważań autorki stanowi wystawa Elie Nadelman – polski prekursor Art Déco w warszawskiej Wejman Gallery (2022). Ekspozycja przypomniała nie tylko postać rzeźbiarza, ale także promotora jego twórczości działającego we Francji, a pochodzącego z Tarnowa krytyka sztuki oraz marszanda Adolfa Baslera, który odegrał niezwykle ważną rolę w zaznajomieniu publiczności polskiej, francuskiej i niemieckiej ze sztuką Nadelmana. Na temat sztuki Eliego Nadelmana wypowiadali się też inni współcześni mu krytycy, których teksty zostały również omówione.
The article concerns the exhibitions and reception of the works of the Polish-Jewish sculptor Elie Nadelman, recognised especially in the United States of America, where he lived from 1914, and in Western Europe, above all in France, where he stayed in the years 1904–1914. The point of departure for the author’s analysis is the exhibition Elie Nadelman – polski prekursor Art Déco [Elie Nadelman – the Polish Precursor of Art Déco] in the Wejman Gallery in Warsaw (2022). The Warsaw exhibition brought to attention not only the sculptor himself, but also the promoter of his work, the art critic and art dealer Adolf Basler, born in Tarnów and active in France, who played a crucial role in acquainting the Polish, French and German public with Nadelman’s art. Nadelman’s oeuvre was commented upon by other contemporary journalists as well, whose texts are also discussed in the article.

The article shows the history of an original Project –International Academic Conference that for almost eleven years has met with great resonance in academic circles: the Project highlights the most interesting issues in art in the context of the integration of interdisciplinary research in the humanities as well as the social sciences. This provides the comprehensive study of the art in the life of society in the context of improving the conscience of humankind.
