A comparison of input ideas and data as well as goals of mathematical models used in physics and biology is briefly discussed. The models used in biology and medicine are divided into „static" and „dynamical" ones and typical schemes of their construction and analysis are given. The main part of the paper concerns dynamical models describing the time evolution of modelled systems in the form of differential eąuations, Some examples are treated in a more detailed way with a stress on their analysis by means of the qualitative theory of differential eąuations. The quantitative (in particular, numerical) and the qualitative approaches to the model analysis in biology are discussed and compared. Arguments in favour of the qualitative approach in many biological problems are given.

Opis:
Language in a broad sense becomes imperative for communication to ensue. Language considered as a system of signs and signification is achieved through a process involving sign relations, e.g. semiosis. Charles S. Peirce’s Theory of Signs can provide a basic framework for the elucidation of the intelligibility of signs. Furthermore, the ability for generating sign processes in an organized manner is determined by what Thomas A. Sebeok designates as an organism’s modeling capacity. Modeling capacities range from primitive to complex, thus generating three orders of language corresponding to language as a Primary Modeling System (PMS), a Secondary Modeling System (SMS) and a Tertiary Modeling System (TMS). This Peirce-Sebeok framework for communication, which John Deely places as “postmodern,” is premised upon what he designates as the suprasubjective nature of sign relations and their equally suprasubjective function. Thus, Sebeok’s Modeling Theory together with Peirce’s doctrine on the nature and behavior of signs can be used to direct the generation as well as the interpretation of language systems in accordance with the ultimate norm of communication, that is, to reflect truth as an icon of reality.

Marketing campaigns directed to randomly selected customers often generate huge costs and a weak response. Moreover, such campaigns tend to unnecessarily annoy customers and make them less likely to answer to future communications. Precise targeting of marketing actions can potentially results in a greater return on investment. Usually, response models are used to select good targets. They aim at achieving high prediction accuracy for the probability of purchase based on a sample of customers, to whom a pilot campaign has been sent. However, to separate the impact of the action from other stimuli and spontaneous purchases we should model not the response probabilities themselves, but instead, the change in those probabilities caused by the action. The problem of predicting this change is known as uplift modeling, differential response analysis, or true lift modeling. In this work, tree-based classifiers designed for uplift modeling are applied to real marketing data and compared with traditional response models, and other uplift modeling techniques described in literature. The experiments show that the proposed approaches outperform existing uplift modeling algorithms and demonstrate significant advantages of uplift modeling over traditional, response based targeting.

Bertrand's paradox is a longstanding problem within the classical interpretation of probability theory. The solutions 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 were proposed using three different approaches to model the problem. In this article, an extended problem, of which Bertrand's paradox is a special case, is proposed and solved. For the special case, it is shown that the corresponding solution is 1/3. Moreover, the reasons of inconsistency are discussed and a proper modeling approach is determined by careful examination of the probability space.

Separation of water-ethanol mixture is of great significance for many branches of industry. Separation techniques commonly used to separate above-mentioned mixture have many drawbacks. Pervaporation is one of alternatives. To make this process more applicable a mathematical model was created. The Flory-Huggins theory, first Fick's law and CFD methods were used in this model. Modeling results enable one to asses the influence of concentration polarization on mass transfer in pervaporation.

Opis:
Purpose: This article deals with the problem of forming Pareto non-optimal norms of mutual behavior of investors and government in the process of decision-making related to financing designed to reduce risks in investment activity. Methodology: Considering the interdependent type (nature) of interactions between related parties, game theory tools were used to model such interactions. Much attention was directed to search for parameters of interaction leading to certain Nash equilibriums in pure strategies. The formal results obtained with the model were verified by statistical analysis. Findings: Analysis showed that the rational behavior of related parties can lead to unexpected results. Powerful investors will aim to work in socially-oriented economies, whereas primarily small investors will operate in most liberal economies with aminimum tax burden but with ahigher level of risk. As for governments’ behaviors, the images are the same: small economies tend to liberalize their tax systems and to secure investment faster than powerful ones. Empirical verification based on statistical data of groups of countries generally confirmed the conclusions. These formal and logical conclusions were from statistical analysis of 124 countries divided into 5 groups: OECD countries, post-socialist countries, Latin American countries, APAC countries and ACP countries. Provided that the more powerful ones are covered economies, there was stronger interdependence between the size of economies and tax burden and also between total investment and tax burden, where this dependence is positive. Originality: The results obtained used Nash equilibriums in pure strategies as models of behavioral norms to define behaviors of related parties and also to explain assumptions concerning the behaviors of investors and government.

Opis:
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative and progressive disease of the central nervous system. It affects more than 10 million patients worldwide and the symptoms allow for little to no control for movement. These symptoms appear because the chemical messenger dopamine is being made in small quantities from impaired cells. However, the disease often forms when there is a mutation in the LRRK2 gene, as the functions of the protein become abnormal. The IC50 value is essential information about molecules because it measures their effectiveness. The goal of this research was to design molecules with a lower IC50 value. This was first done by modeling molecules on the molecular modeling program, Gaussian 09. Modifications were made to molecules that were said to bind to the LRRK2 protein. Modifications ranged from adding a single atom or replacing atoms with groups. After running these molecules on the program, the total energy was found. Using the equation found from the correlation between 1/IC50 and the total energy, the IC50 value was predicted for each of the modified molecules. Many of the modified molecules portrayed a positive percent difference between the original IC50 value and the new one. This saves both time and money because the molecules with lower IC50 values can be made, preserving the resources. After creating the molecule with a low IC50 value, further experimental procedures can be taken; this is a large step in assisting researchers to reach a potential treatment because it is more efficient.

The study here presented pertains to the analysis of mutual interactions of the monetary and fiscal policies in the case of Poland. The historical policies carried out during different periods of time and their economic effects are compared with the possible strategies, obtained from the analysis of the proposed monetaryfiscal game. In the study, the methods of non-cooperative game theory are combined with macroeconomic modeling. The respective game is formulated for monetary and fiscal authorities as players. Strategies of these players refer to the respective instruments of their policies: the real interest rate and the budget deficit in relation to GDP. Payoffs include inflation and GDP growth, respectively. The payoffs are calculated using a recursive macroeconomic model estimated for the Polish economy. The model describes influences of the instruments of the monetary and fiscal policies on the state of the economy. The best response strategies, the Nash equilibria and Pareto optimality are analyzed. Changes of the policies towards the more restrictive or more expansive ones and their effects in comparison to the historically applied are discussed. This is performed for two different time periods – the time of recovery after 2004 and the time of the global financial crisis after 2008.

This work is a continuation of the research on the comparison of these methods with apply a computer simulation, which the analyzed production process in the selected enterprise, after 24 hours and week. An attempt was made to simplify the comparison of the methods based on the obtained simulation in terms of costs. In analyzed case, more advantageous solution is to use the DBR method. To produce various orders that do not require 100% production on the bottleneck position, the use of Kanban is a frequent practice as it provides greater flexibility in order execution.

W artykule zaprezentowano pojęcie ergodyczności w chaotycznej dynamice systemów komputerowych. Przedyskutowano także problem definiowania własności mieszania w kontekście okresowości wszystkich trajektorii systemu.
Examination of the dynamics of broadly-defined computer systems that show the characteristics of a deterministic chaos requires an adjustment of the notions of ergodicity and mixing. The notions are well-defined in case of systems that range within the areas of non-zero status. The range of states of a computer system is naturally a finite set, which makes it necessary to look for differently defined dynamic characteristics that are prerequisites of chaos. The paper presents a concept of ergodicity that is construed to be a quantitative property of a computer-based dynamic system. It also discusses the problem of defining the property of mixing in the context of imminent periodicity of all the trajectories of the system.

W pierwszej części pracy omówiono główne przyczyny niepewności w rozpoznawaniu parametrów fizyczno-mechanicznych przyjmowanych do obliczeń. W kolejnej części przedstawiono krótki opis teoretyczny metody zbiorów losowych, a następnie omówiono wybrane jej zastosowania w modelowaniu numerycznym zagadnień geoinżynierskich. W podsumowaniu podkreślono zalety i ograniczenia metody zbiorów losowych.
This article presents a review of random sets theory applied in numerical modeling of various geo-engineering issues. Use of the proper input parameters for numerical calculation has a crucial impact on the results of the calculation. In the numerical calculation, the input parameter values are often averaged. The risk in taking this approach is caused by uncertainties in the values of parameter determination. Natural variability of the parameters and limitations of the determining methods cause the parameters to be shown as a range of values. In this context, it is important to obtain information about the parameters from multiple sources. The random sets theory makes it possible to handle uncertainties connected with the selection of input parameters in a very specific way. The first part of the article explains the main reasons for uncertainties in the determination of physical-mechanical parameters. A short theoretical description of random sets theory is then presented. The analysis goes on to describe the chosen applications of the random sets theory in numerical modeling of geoengineering issues. Finally, the article concludes with the advantages and disadvantages of the random sets theory.

Aim/purpose – The study was based on social exchange theory and addressed the effects of firm-based organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) on normative and continuance organizational commitment (OC). Multigroup behavioral differences among pharmaceutical executives were also evaluated. Design/methodology/approach – This study employed an empirical, explanatory cross-sectional study with online questionnaires administered to four hundred and one randomly selected pharmaceutical executives in Nigeria. The covariance-based structural equation modeling technique was used for testing hypotheses. Firm-based OCB domains –conscientiousness, sportsmanship, and civic virtue were regressed on OC domains of continuance, and normative. The hypothesized effects of firm-based OCB on the domains of OC were examined using Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS). Findings – The structural model had acceptable fit measures. Conscientiousness and sportsmanship behaviors were negatively related to normative OC while civic virtue had a positive significant relationship with normative OC. Multigroup comparisons based on gender, profession, and type of organization revealed significant effects on the relations between civic virtue and normative OC. Employees highly vested with enhancing and representing their company’s image, tend to be more obligated to continue and remain with the organization. The more self-directed, and less-complaining employees are, the lower the tendency to remain with the organization. The nuances of group differences among employees had an impact on examined relationships. Research implications/limitations – Human resource managers should adequately stimulate and motivate employees to be ambassadors of the organization. This is achievable by instilling a sense of ownership and loyalty in employees. Further implications are discussed. Originality/value/contribution – The study disentangled the relations between OCB and OC in the context of pharmaceutical executives in a developing country. The study highlighted the essence of group-specific differences in behavioral evaluation among pharmaceutical executives.
