Opis:
In this paper a new continuous model for vibration analysis of a beam with an open edge crack is presented. A quasi-linear displacement filed is suggested for the beam and the strain and stress fields are calculated. The equation of motion of the beam is calculated using the Hamilton principle. The calculated equation of motion is solved with a modified weighted residual method and the natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The results are compared with those obtained by finite element method and an excellent agreement has been observed. The presented model is a simple and accurate method for analysis of the cracked beam behavior near or far from the crack tip.

Opis:
In this study the Maximum Likelihood Estimator is taken to identify the characteristics of insulation failure about the class-H motors by considering the accelerated life testing data under censored situation from Nelson. Based on the Weibull survival modeling the failure is expressed as the series connection of three modes, namely the turn, phase, and ground, respectively, the so-called competing failure. The main concern in present investigation is about the variation of shape parameters, β with the temperature. The Gompertz-type relation of βi(T) is suggested with the reference temperature, Tri for the i-th failure mode. It is found that the Tri ’s not only distinguish the characteristics of cumulative damage process about the insulation, but also involve the estimation of mean-time-to-failure (MTTF). Physically Tri denotes the turning point of varied βi as the i-th failure mode becomes moderate in a sense of less capability about the accumulation of insulation damage at higher temperature where corresponds the thermal degradation process. The numerical results indicate that the insulation technique used is acceptable as the operation temperature kept in the use condition 363K. According to the predicted lifetime as the temperature rises up to 440K, which still within the allowed range in application, the turn structure needs to be rearranged primarily, then the phase next. The ground mode has only influence on the failure at much higher temperature.

Opis:
This paper presents the measurement of vibrational properties of sundatang soundboard. Sundatang is a plucked stringed traditional musical instrument that is popular among the Kadazandusun communities in Sabah, Malaysia. The vibrational properties of the soundboard are measured using CADA-X impact hammering system in a condition where the instrument is without any string. There are two types of sundatang used in this study; one made from acacia and the other from vitex wood. In this measurement, frequency response functions (FRFs) and modal parameters of the top plate and back plate of this instrument are obtained. It is found that in free edge, fundamental frequency of both plates of acacia sundatang is greater than the vitex sundatang in a range of 112 Hz to 230 Hz. However, in clamped edge (attached to its ribs), it was modified to a lower frequency and closer to each other in the range of 55 Hz to 59 Hz. Another finding is the detection of the excitation of similar mode shape at different resonance frequencies. This phenomenon is termed as Different State of Mode (DSM) which is observed may be because the number of testing points is not enough. Findings of this study provide important information to the study of quality development of this instrument.

Opis:
The piezoelectric unimorphs are essential resonant components of many oscillating systems including electroacoustic devices. The unimorph spectral properties are namely dependent on geometric dimensions, applied materials and mounting. Preliminary dimensioning and optimization of unimorph shape are usually carried out prior to comprehensive design work mostly based on finite element method. Simple analytical model is a suitable tool for initial design phase. This paper presents a derivation of calculation model describing natural vibrations of a circular unimorph with the piezoelectric layer diameter smaller than the elastic layer diameter. The system of equations with closed-form solution is instrumental to calculation of resonant frequencies and mode shapes for unimorphs with clamped, simply supported and free circumference. The theoretical results are compared with vibration velocity measurement of clamped unimorph sample in a wide frequency range. Analytical model derived in this paper is used to assess the effect of the thickness tolerance on unimorph resonant frequencies.

Opis:
In engineering disciplines, both in scientific and practical applications, systems with a tremendous number of degrees of freedom occur. Hence, there is a need for reducing the computational effort in investigating these systems. If the system behaviour has to be calculated for many time instances and/or load scenarios, the need for efficient calculations further increases. Model order reduction is a common procedure in order to cope with such large systems. The aim of model order reduction is to reduce the (computational) effort in solving the given task while still keeping main features of the respective system. One approach of model order reduction uses the proper orthogonal decomposition. This approach is applied to Mikota’s vibration chain, a linear vibration chain with remarkable properties, where two cases of an undamped and a damped structure are investigated.

Opis:
Mortar feedstock is extruded to form bead and it is selectively placed line by line in the material extrusion additive manufacturing. With respects to part building process healthiness, load-supporting ability of overlaid beads is emphasized as buildability. Buildability is primarily dependent on thixotropic properties of feedstock and vertical overlapping schedule. In the present study, water-to-binder (w/b) ratio was chosen as material aspect to assess buildability. Uneven bead shape evolution and premature failure were highlighted owing to low yield stress of high w/b ratio feedstock. Feedstock with optimum w/b ratio showed good buildability even at the interval time of 19 sec.

Preventive maintenance is beneficial to minimize unexpected breakdowns in industries with continuous production. Composite structures are used for naval applications like ship hulls and marine propellers. In most of the industries, composite structural health analysis using experimental and numerical model are available for damage detection and estimate the residual life of composite beams. The present work is focusses on identification of damage and estimate residual life of composite healthy and cracked beams. Free vibrational analysis is carried out on composite beam made of Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) with a different crack orientation. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrum analyzer associated with engineering data management (EDM) software utilized for experimental analysis to detect presence of damage in cracked composite beam. Finite element method (FEM) software called Analysis of composite pre/post (ACP) available in ANSYS R3 is used to compare the natural frequency results of healthy composite beam with cracked composite beam with different ply orientations. For validation of numerical modal evaluation, the consequences acquired from ANSYS R3 Finite element analysis (FEA) software are in comparison with experimental results received by impact hammer method. The fatigue life of a damaged composite beam is estimated the use of “Hwang and Han’s” fatigue life equation.

The article presents the results of the analyzes on the influence of the optimization self-supporting staircase geometry on its strength and dynamic properties. The primary goal was to achieve a structure with a lower mass. The Topology Optimization tool from the ANSYS package allowed to the elimination of the finite elements carrying the smallest stresses from the structure. The iterative approach resulted in a systematic reduction of the model mass up to decrease by 40 (%). The reduction in the structure led to a decrease in its strength - the safety factor decreased from 5.95 to 4.92. The influence of the optimization of the structure on its dynamic properties was determined as an additional aim of the study.
Iteracyjne podejście skutkowało systematyczną redukcją masy modelu aż do założonego jej spadku o 40 (%). Redukcja ta doprowadziła do nieznacznego zmniejszenia wytrzymałości konstrukcji - współczynnik bezpieczeństwa zmniejszył się z poziomu 5,95 do 4,92. Jako dodatkowy cel badania założono ustalenie wpływu przeprowadzenia optymalizacji konstrukcji na jej cechy dynamiczne.

Opis:
The aim of this research is to use a simple acoustic method of a very near field recording, which enables measurement and display of oscillation modes, to estimate the velocity of flexural waves, based on the wavelengths of standing waves measured on the sample. The paper analyses cases of 1D geometry, flexural waves that occur on a beam excited by an impulse. Measurements were conducted on two different samples: steel and a wooden beam of the same length. Due to the appearance of evanescent waves at the boundary regions, the distance between the nodes of standing waves that occur deviates from half the wavelength, which can be compensated using a correction factor. Cases of fixed and free boundary conditions were analysed. By quantifying how much the boundary conditions change the mode shape function, it can be predicted how the mode of oscillation changes if the boundary conditions change, which can also find application in musical acoustics and sound radiation analysis.
