The main pur pose of geo phys i cal prospection us ing the groundpene trat ing ra dar (GPR) was to de ter mine the lo ca tion of po ten tial un der ground se pul chral struc tures. Dur ing the GPR sur vey, op ti mal depth pen e tra tion was achieved due to dry rocks and mono lithic struc ture of the lime stone pla teau on which the an cient cem e tery was lo cated. Us ing an tenna of 100 MHz, the depth of pen e tra tion was up to 45 m and with an tenna of 250 MHz, up to 15 meters. Three main groups of archaeological structures were identified: sarcophagi and mum mies, burial shafts; mo bile ob jects (solid rock blocks as frag ments of tombs). One of the main goal of the GPR sur - vey was to track the route of the west ern part of the Dry Moat, ex pressed by a wide and shal low de pres sion spread ing to - wards north-south. The re sults of geo phys i cal in ves ti ga tions sug gest that Saqqara pla teau is an ideal site for us ing GPR survey ing technology.

Opis:
The substrate in the area of the monastery of Bernardine Sisters was analyzed based on 7 small-diameter profiled mechanical holes drilled in order to determine the structure and lithology of the area and archaeological stratigraphic sequence. Based on this research, a system of archaeological strata and the presence of objects such as wall remains, and especially the relicts of the medieval drainage ditch “moat”, was established. It was assessed whether the geoenvironmental conditions are conducive to pollution occurrence and accumulation. Its major source was the Municipal Great Scales on the Main Market Square of Kraków, which functioned in the Middle Ages. To verify this thesis the indexes of sediment coming from the historical “moat” were determined (pH, Eh, EC, LOI). Similar studies were carried out to the level of “calec” for the substrate of the Monastery, erected in its vicinity. In the lithologically recognized and archaeologically interpreted layers of earth, heavy metals content was determined to distinguish anthropogenic factors and geoenvironmental conditions of the contaminants. The pollution assessment was made on the basis of a comparative analysis of the land quality, especially in the areas of silt occurrence, also in relation to the current environmental standards.

Opis:
Since at least the 13th century Powidz has functioned as an important though small urban centre. The fact that it was located at the intersection of the trade routes and at a water reservoir, were important factors which influenced the development of the town. Archaeological and environmental surveys conducted in 2017 throw light on the modern stage of the development of the discussed centre. The turbulent changes through which the historical centre of Powidz and Castle Hill underwent in the last 200 years are clearly marked in the layerings recognised in both trenches. What is more, some of them were not documented, and the interviews with the inhabitants of the town are mostly the source of knowledge about them. Hence, determining the chronology of some of the layerings is signifi cantly hindered. For instance, the presence of single and partially preserved human bones suggests the presence of burials in the layers leveled from the immediate surroundings to T 2/17, though the soil in which they were registered could have been brought from a larger distance away as well. It seems that in T 2/17 the layering arrangements were registered, which provide evidence of a moat. It probably bordered the residence of the Powidz starost in the past. Information about the presence of such an assumption on the so-called Castle Hill can be found in numerous written sources [cf. e.g. Ganińska 1993]. The presence of a moat on the other hand is confirmed not only by the documented systems of layerings, but also the results of the analyses of plant macro-remains suggest it. Th e presence of a moat is confi rmed among others by the fact that it was filled with the ground brought in the 20th century. Simultaneously, the layerings registered in both excavations seem to confirm numerous levellings of the surrounding terrain and the Castle Hill itself. More diversified materials were gathered from T 2/17 than from T 1/17, though most of them come from backfill layers. Nevertheless, the presumption that the backfill is made of materials from the adjacent elevation seems justified. Both the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the artifacts (window glass, glass vessels, richly ornamented plate tiles, ceramic vessels), animal bones or plant remains, seem to confirm the initial assumption that there was a residence of a representative of a wealthier bourgeoisie, probably the Powidz starost, on the so called Castle Hill. The presence of post-consumer remains or broken pottery suggest significant activity in the modern period if it is assumed that they come from the layers levelled at the cone. Unfortunately, in the light of the present data, backfilling and lowering of a terrain (moat) with the ground from another part of Powidz cannot be excluded. Nevertheless, the presence of a window glass, richly ornamented plate tiles or, finally, written sources are in accord with the earlier hypothesis. The conducted natural analyses enrich our knowledge about the past of Powidz, but they also significantly influence the perception and proper reading of a history of the formation of the particular layers, and hence, a better analysis of cultural processes, even if they occurred recently. Despite the not numerous collections and rather small area which was examined, environmental studies can be the source of interesting conclusions.

In the western part of the Professors’ Garden of the Jagiellonian University, traces of a moat were discovered that could be related to the line of Cracow’s oldest fortifications, built during the reign of Leszek the Black – 1285–1286. The remains of a corner of a later wooden building, with preserved oak foundations (the trees were cut down in 1490 or 1491) and traces of repair (from 1502–1503), were preserved in the covering rubble and can be identified as the remains of the German Bursa (Dormitory) (after 1487–1523).

After having finished the excavation in a zone located west of the Step Pyramid and spanning the area between the pyramid enclosure wall and the eastern border of the Dry Moat, the Polish–Egyptian mission started a new project aiming at a complex investigation of the Dry Moat. A geophysical survey of the area and excavations during these two campaigns focused on the east and west rock-hewn walls of the Moat, thus completing earlier research done in this part of the excavation field. A further part of the Upper Necropolis, containing simple burials from the Ptolemaic period, was unearthed and the exploration of the tomb inscribed for Ikhi/Mery and his namesake son was continued. Clearing the facade of the latter led to the discovery of another funerary structure cut in the rock below the general’s tomb. The floor of the upper tomb turned out to be the ceiling of the lower one. Preparations for the exploration of the new structure were made in 2014.

Archeological studies require a precise and interdisciplinary approach. Use of the noninvasive methods in urban area investigations is expected because they do not result in any changes in land architecture plans. Very good combination fulfilling such demands are geochemical analyses of: pH, Eh, conductivity and heavy metals concentrations in soils and the results of the ground penetrating radar method. These methods allow for a more precise selection of places of interest and can be also used for a more accurate calibration and better interpretation of subsequent results. Proposed methodology gives good final results thanks to complementarity of each method and can be used under variable conditions.

Fieldwork of the Polish–Egyptian Mission to Saqqara in the 2020 season continued on the eastern bank of the Dry Moat, resulting in the discovery of a rock-cut structure directly south of Corridor 1. Fieldwork also included exploration of a rock-cut chapel adjacent to the tomb of Merefnebef, part of the Sixth Dynasty funerary complex located south of the tomb. Both areas yielded new burials belonging to the so-called Upper Necropolis, which overlies the remains of late Old Kingdom funerary structures. Conservation work constituted an important part of the 2020 fieldwork program.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to initially assess the changes in the physicochemical composition of water in the reservoirs of the city moat (Wrocław) in the context of the analysis of the type of pollutants flowing into the inner-city water reservoirs and in relation to the impact of air quality directly in the vicinity of the reservoirs. As an element of the urban landscape, the inner-city water reservoirs play an important role in improving the local climatic conditions, increasing the biodiversity of the landscape, and eliminating the negative impact of urban heat islands. The measurement campaign was conducted for 11 months. The following parameters were determined in the analyzed water samples: turbidity, pH, electrolytic conductivity, as well as concentrations of nitrogen forms (ammonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen), total phosphorus and sulfates. Additionally, the air quality parameters in the direct location of the reservoirs were analyzed, including: concentrations of nitrogen oxides, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, humidity level and selected meteorological data, i.e. daily precipitation and average daily air temperature. The average concentrations of nitrogenous forms in the waters of the downtown water reservoir were as follows: ammonium nitrogen 0.155 mg•dm-3, nitrite nitrogen 0.084 mg•dm-3, and nitrate nitrogen 1.15 mg•dm-3. The sulfate concentrations showed greater variability 67.805–180.973 mg•dm-3. On the basis of the conducted observations and analyses, a statistically significant relationship was found between the quality parameters of water in municipal water reservoirs and external factors such as air quality, and in particular the correlation of air humidity with the concentration of nitrite and nitrate ions in the water. The conducted research confirms the influence of air quality on the levels of pollutants in the waters collected in the urban water reservoir.

Opis:
W artykule ujęto problematykę najstarszych, XIII-wiecznych, obwarowań ziemnych odkrywanych we Wrocławiu, Głogowie czy Namysłowie w postaci wału ziemno-piaszczysto-faszynowego wraz z fosą. Przedstawiono temat obwarowań ziemnych słabo identyfikowanych w terenie, których istnienie wiązać można (lub nawet należy) z najstarszymi lokacjami miejskimi. Wieloletnie badania archeologiczne i studyjne autora artykułu, podczas których odkrywane były pozostałości wałów ziemnych lewobrzeżnego Wrocławia, ukazują istnienie analogicznych konstrukcji w innych miastach.
The article presents the problems of the oldest, 13th-century, earth fortifications discovered in Wrocław, Głogów and Namysłów, the form of an earth-sand-fascine rampart with a moat. The article introduces the subject of earth fortifications, poorly identified in the area, and the existence of which one can or should associate with the oldest municipal locations. The author of the article’s years of archaeological and study researches of, during which remains of earth ramparts of left-bank Wrocław were discovered, show the existence of analogous structures in other cities. The construction of the discovered earth ramparts and moats, as well as their stratigraphy in relation to the later brick defensive circumferences indicate that they were structures which constituted the boundary of the newly located town in the first stage of operation. In the next stage of their development, there was a wooden palisade, a fence, which served as the first town fortifications. There were cities in which there was never a brick defense circuit besides the city gates, such as in Świerzawa or Kiev.

Area 4 north of the Migdol was the focus of the 2019 season excavations. An apparent well from Phase G3 was discovered with some pottery sherds inside dating from the end of the Middle Kingdom. In the early Eighteenth Dynasty it was turned into a cemetery; seven tombs discovered this season provided the first evidence of suprapositioning of grave structures in this part of the burial ground. The outskirts of the Phase G settlement and cemetery may have been reached in the excavation. Mud-brick structures from Phase F3 were used for domestic and crafting activities. A battery of ovens continued to be excavated. Parts of Phase F2 architecture were excavated beside the Migdol and below the platform of Wall 2. Artifacts and raw materials indicated long-distance contacts. Metal objects (rings, needles) and arrowheads were also discovered. Phase D4 was represented by the remains of a transport route/walkway. Two silos and a fireplace enclosed by a wall dated to phase C.

Archaeological and geomorphologic research conducted on the archaeological site in Bruszczewo, indicates most of the cultural layers and archaeological objects to be dated back to the Early Bronze Period. Such is also the dating of the oldest colluvial deposits there. Second phase of relief transformations and sedimentary deposition is connected with the Lusatian stage of the site exploitation in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age. Layers dated back to these periods can be observed in the moat, in the edge zone of the site as well as in the peatbog zone. Most of the material related to this stage of the settlement exploitation is deposited in the unearthed Lusatian moat. Third stage - the medieval settlement of the site - is well-known mainly for its mixed colluvial sediments. They contain cultural material from different periods, and were transported and deposited in modern times. Fourth phase of the area exploitation - agrotechnical denudation - is marked with the layer of colluvia of the widest spatial range, covering the deposits of peatbog plain. These sediments are linked to regular cultivation within the archaeological site.
